live in des moines tonight is rick williams and rick, for the candidates it's about meet organize exceeding expectations when you think about it the same is true for the media covering this big event. >> reporter: jim, that's absolutely right. there's a lot of expectations going into tonight's caucus especially among candidates who have been there before. like hillary clinton who obviously lost to barack obama in 2008. she's hoping for a better showing tonight and on the republican side, candidates like mike huckabee or rick santorum who won their respective caucuses but did not secure the nomination. what is new to the caucus this year is the way the results will be shared or transmitted. among the media and the public. over the weekend members of the media from around the country and the world converged here on this small town of des moines and most of them will be working from here, this high tech broadcast center where the caucus results will can come in throughout the night. this huge electronic billboard will display voting results

sent in from iowa's 99 counties and more than 1600 precincts. broadcast print and digital reporters will of course relay the information and for the first time there's even a closed in studio for reporter whose choose to use skype. des moines may be a sleepy little midwestern town when it's not in the political spotlight but it will use cutting edge technology to transmit caucus results throughout the evening. a special app was created so that precinct officials can send results to party headquarters instantly and according to microsoft securely. in past caucuses they had to rely on an olds fashioned system of telephones and the u.s. mail. but not any. >> this information is not just going out to the public. the parties have the opportunity to review it and make sure it's correct, easy access to call back its precinct and making sure that everything is correct with the information before it gets released out to the public. >> reporter: and so the iowa

>> it cracked it. it didn't shatter it but you could see where it was just -- like it left an imprint of like a bullet. >> the train was carrying 201 people from washington to new york city. fortunately nobody was hurt. the train stopped in new jersey for an inspection before continuing on to new york. the national transportation safety board today released an enormous amount of information about last may's crash of an amtrak train in philadelphia. eight people were killed, hundreds were hurt when the train derailed at frankford junction on may 12th. but the question is how much did the disclosures today really help us understand what happened? "action news" reporter john rawlins is live in philadelphia. john. >> reporter: well, jim, a quick read of the data would indicate that it would rule out any technical or mechanical problem in this crash. so, the focus remains on the engineer. at first he had no recollection of that critical time when the train accelerated to a dangerously high speed.

six months later, though, the indication is he recovered some of his memory but he could still not explain how that train reached a speed of 106 miles per hour. the ntsb released a series of video stills today from the speeding amtrak locomotive as it tipped off the rails at the frankford junction curve disconnecting from its overhead power lines. today investigators indicated there was no evidence of mechanical or equipment failures with the locomotive, the tracks or signals. as for the man at the controls, engineer brandon bostian blood tests show no evidence of either alcohol or drugs in his system. a check of his cell phone shows it was not in use when the train was operating. it said bostian fully cooperated with investigators speaking with them twice. in may just days after the crash, he said he had no recollection of what occurred after passing north philadelphia station and the crash site several miles up the line. but in november, he did recall parts of the portion of that trip. he spoke of adjusting both speed and brakes but added the memory from there is very

vague. the only word and i hesitate to use the world dream-like because it sounds like you a asleep and i don't believe you a asleep at all but kind of a foggy memory. two philadelphia based attorneys representing victims and families going through the more than 2,000 pages released today both skeptical of the new found details from bostian. >> and the problem remains his changing story which started with i have no recollection whatsoever and now becomes i have memory of what occurred but i mysteriously have a gap as well. >> we certainly have our own questions which we would like to ask him and tend to ask him under oath. we can already tell from the statement that there are some very inconsistenc inconsistenci. >> reporter: the ntsb says it's done with its fact finding. at this point it will be up to the investigators to look at

the facts that were released today and try to come can up way probable cause. the hope is they'll share that probable cause basically what happened at a hearing sometime this spring. live in center city, john rawlins channel6 "action news. jim. >> thank you, john. right now on 6abc.com you can find more images from that camera on board amtrak 188. you can also find surveillance video showing another view of the crash. we've also posted raw video and photographs from the scene along with a closer look at the eight victims of this tragedy. philadelphia police are trying to identify the three men seen in this surveillance video attacking another man in logan. the incident happened at 11:40 saturday morning at the lucky garden chinese food store at 4901 north broad street. police say the attackers repeatedly punched the victim as you can see. one suspect then stabbed the victim multiple times. the assault left the victim in critical condition. investigators say the suspects stole the man's watch and his

belt. carbon monoxide fumes sickened two people early this morning in the queen village section of philadelphia. fire crews were called to a home on the 100 block of fitzwater about 4:00 a.m. two residents inside were taken to jefferson for treatment. philadelphia gas works recorded elevated carbon monoxide readings insides the house. prosecutors are seeking a long sentence for chaka fattah jr. the congressman's son learns his fate tomorrow. fattah jr. was found guilty of misusing loan money as well as funds that he got as a school management subcontractor. he was convicted on 22 of the 23 counts against him. fattah jr. faces between 57 and 71 months in prison. today prosecutors filed a memo with the court asking the judge to punish fattah jr. at the high end of the range. 24 months in jail is the sentence for former reading city council president francisco acosta.

he has been convicted of taking a bribe. the case was heard in federal court in philadelphia today and lehigh valley correspondent walter perez is live outside the federal building. walter. >> reporter: well, jim, $1,800 was all it took to bribe acosta and now the man friends call francis is spending two years in prison and in a real message sent by the judge pay a fine of $1,800. the exact same amount of money that got a local politician in a whole lot of trouble. francis acosta was a rising political star in reading but his career in public service came to an abrupt end after admitting to taking a bribe from a fellow official. in exchange acosta who was reading city council president would try to persuade the rest of the council to repeal local anti-bribery laws. officials from the u.s. attorney's office say the outcome of this case would have been a lot different had acosta not come clean. >> this could have been a lots worse for mr. acosta.

he did himself a big favor by trying to undo the crisis he set in motion and try and work with the government to take back what he different acosta's guilty plea came weeks after federal agents raided city hall in reading. at first he denied any wrongdoing. but changed his tune after being confronted with the evidence collected by the fbi. acosta's attorney says his client is a deeply religious manihoc cements his two year federal prison sentence with deep regret. >> he has an incredible amount of remorse. he feels bad for letting down the trust of the citizens of reading. i think that's the thing that hits him hardest. >> reporter: acosta is the first person sentenced in wake a massive federal probe of alleged pay to play schemes in reading and allentown. defense attorney goldman says this case sends a clear message. >> anybody out there that's a politician that's thinking of, you know, committing bribery is the not worth it. don't do it. >> reporter: the only other

>> firefighters were called to put out a fire at the vacant granite run mall in middletown township this afternoon. crews reported heavy smoke insides the building. early reports indicate that the fire may have been sparked by an electrical problem. the granite run mall closed its doors last summer and is slated for demolition this year although the sears store does remain opened. officials in camden county are still trying figure out what sparked a fire last night in a popular deli in oaklyn. viewer video shows the intense

"action news" reporter vernon odom has the story tonight. >> reporter: kevin johnson a local senior citizen arrived at his favorite sandwich deli late this morning only to find it shut down. the result of a scorching fire here at amato brothers last night. to say the least johnson and lots of other regular customers are disappointed. >> people can come from camden and philadelphia to come here to get sands wind chills because they was fresh. >> it's a very good place to eat and good wings, good sands wind chills and surprised to see what happened. >> reporter: the fire broke out around 9 o'clock last night on this landmark on the white horse pike. investigators say there's no sign of foul play. the fire started in a storage area the owner tells me. the business was closed at the time. it took nearly an hour to control the fire. mike amato left with his insurance agent late this morning still reflecting on this night mayor. >> this is my only inca income r

tonight storm tracker6 live double scan showing that we have been dealing with a rounds of rain but it's moving ververy quickly. the steadiest over the garden state parkway pushing to the east. this will be moving out over the next two or three hours. behind it we have slightly cooler air. we've will a taste of spring. yesterday ares lie 58 degrees, today bumped up to 59 degrees. tomorrow behind this front it will ease down to 50 degrees but still the normal high for this time of the year is 41 and on wednesday that's when temperatures will soar into the 60's. right now doesn't feel like the first day of february. it's 50 in philadelphia. it's 45 in sea isle city. 46 in trenton. 44 in reading and even the poconos spring skiing in the poconos today with a current temperature of 41. so, satellite6 along with action radar slowing this round of rain pushing through again this is a heads of weak cold front and then we'll get a break in the action tomorrow and then i'm tracking the next storm system and this is what will bring blizzard conditions

to the upper midwest as that low pressure tracks into the great lakes and that will bring us a cold front late in the day on wednesday. so, future tracker showing 9 o'clock tonight, this is when all that of rain will be pushing off shore. so, tonight the showers early. then cloudy and chilly but not bad for february. 29 in the cooler suburbs, about 33 degrees for center city. tomorrow this webb of high pressure builds in bringing us a mix of clouds and sunshine. warm for the second day of frontal boundary with a high of 50 degrees. on wednesday this high pressure moves away from us. the that low pressure lifts up to the north and that drags that cold front our way. this will bring us a tremendous surge of moisture and warmth from the gulf of mexico. so, the high up to 63 degrees but a band of some heavy rain, perhaps even some thunderstorms moving through late in the day. the combination of the rain about an inch of rain and the temperatures in the 60's with that snow melt means that we could see some flooding, so a flood watch has been posted wednesday at noon until

thursday at 5 o'clock for most of our viewing area and again this could cause some localized flooding, even some of the smaller creeks and streams could be flooding thanks to the snow melt and the rain. so, the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast, tomorrow for ground hog day, some sunshine, it will be cooler but still mild for february with a high up to 50 degrees. wednesday is when it gets warm. it's wet and it's windy. we could have some gusty thunderstorms with this system, a high of 63 degrees. and that could cause some trouble with there near record warmth. streets and streams, there will be flooding so be careful for the evening commute. also the schuylkill river basin could have minor flood and a gusty thunderstorm ahead of that cold front. the evening commute on wednesday will have some issues but this is a fast moving system. by thursday sun is back with a mixture of some clouds with a high of 50 and then friday we bump it down to 42 degrees. looks like a coastal storm will stay well out to sea, shouldn't bring us any moisture and the weekend
