utterly dramatic both for democrats, and for republicans. the voters of iowa have turned this into a presidential free for all. it is monday night and the big story on "action news" tonight is tighter than tight caucus results in iowa tonight, and let's begin with the republicans. these results are notable as much for who didn't win as who did win. senator ted cruz has beaten donald trump by four percentage points, substantially exceeding expectations, regardless of what we may hear trump has to be very disappointed but not so for senator marco rubio who with 23 percent is now very much in the game. by the way, chris christie next to last, with 2 percent. on the democratic side, hillary clinton and bernie sanders are in a virtual dead heat with 90 percent of the vote counted. as of a few minutes ago, hillary clinton had

49.8 percent, sanders 49.6 percent, separated by just .2 of 1 percent. martin o'malley got 1 percent tonight and he has suspended his campaign. rick williams is live in des moines tonight, at the media center. rick, some utterly dramatic things going on, in iowa. >> reporter: that is right, jim. it has been quite a night. so much for polls and pundits most of whom predicted ted cruz would finish second to donald trump in the iowa caucus but cruz is victor tonight, donald trump second and marco rubio close third. good night for rubio. on the democratic side it is a real horse race, bernie sanders and hillary clinton dead locked with 90 percent of the precincts, or 10 percent still having to report. meanwhile, the g.o.p. is reporting a record turnout of voters throughout the hawkeye state tonight which certainly helped cruz to victory, and
