dangers the cold weather can bring but we start with meteorologist cecily tynan. she has the first look at the accuweather forecast. >> hi, monica. it is cold but the real air mass has yet to arrive. it's 25 degrees in philadelphia right now. not much wind. but the arctic boundary that will move through tonight this is what has the real bitter air. temperatures close to 20 degrees below zero. those are air temperatures not wind chills and that's the air mass that will be settling in over the weekend. now, double scan live showing that we are seeing a few snow flurries, light snow showers near downingtown but there's more snow squalls associated with that front so as that front pulls through, not everyone will see them. they're very localized but those who do will experience we're told whiteout conditions. so, the key time for the snow squalls overnight when most of us are home sleeping between about 11 o'clock in the northwest suburbs and 5 o'clock along the coast. now, when you get one of these snow squalls, because the ground is so cold, it's

covered immediately. there's no melting. visibility reduced near zero could leave a quick coating to an inch or two in a matter of minutes. if you're driving through this late tonight, a good idea to pull over, let the snow squall move through. now that wind chill advisory has been posted 6 o'clock saturday evening until 9 o'clock sunday. a wind chill warning for the poconos and this is because we're talking dangerously low wind chills. the poconos wind chills 20 to 30 below. i talked my kids out of skiing this weekend because it's just too cold for that. allentown into philadelphia wind chill 15 below to 20 below and our warmest wind chills areas to the south, still 10 to 15 degrees below zero. i'll talk more about the temperatures and our next winter storm on the way in the full accuweather forecast. monica. >> thank you cecily. our team coverage continues with chad pradelli live at independence mall with how today folks hands today's frigid temperatures. chad. >> reporter: hey, monica. they're staying indoors if they can. when they go outside they're

this weekend as temperatures plunge. >> you need to watch out for two main things and the main things that you need to look for are frost bite and hypothermia. >> you lose most of your body heat from your head and torso but smaller areas typically suffer frost bite first. >> such as your fingertips and your ears so you need to really be aware and cognizant and you need to cover everything up this weekend. >> as for avid exercisers. >> when you're running i think it feels about 20 degrees warmer than when you're -- what actually the temperature is. >> that's true. moving will help keep your body warm but sweating increases the risk for frost bite. dr. targin says if you're skiing this weekend, take lots of breaks. as for runners, he recommends moving your workout inside. >> and that's why we invented treadmills and a gym. >> early signs of frost bite include numbness, tingling and skin turning red, white or grayish or appearing waxy looking. >> your hands are red. >> this runner assures me her hands were covered earlier and

she'll cover them up again. >> yeah, they don't feel cold. they're not too bad. >> as for hypothermia it's a dangerous and potentially deadly condition when your body temperature dips below 95 degrees. signs such as shivering or confusion mean you need to go inside and get warm and dry. and kids the elderly and mentally ill are most at risk for problems so you want to keep a close eye on them. for parents it's best to do indoor activities with the kids this weekend. monica, i'm sure you'll be doing a lot of those. >> a lot of that. thank you ali. officials in delaware county announce they made an arrest in a deadly hit and run that happened earlier this week in chester. the district attorney says braheem scott was behind the wheel of a black nissan that hit a woman tuesday morning at the intersection of ninth and hayes street and kept going. the victim was marion bennett of boothwyn. she died at the scene. police found the vehicle they believe was involved less than an hour after that incident.

>> it was so devastating, so forceful that it knocked her boots and actually her socks off of her body. >> scott did make a statement to police admitting he hit the victim and left the scene. he's charged with homicide by vehicle involuntary manslaughter among others. >> from our delaware news room tonight, a new castle county man will head to court facing more than 70 charges related to illegal deer hunting. 38-year-old james smith the third of bear was charged on tuesday. police said smith took at least 14 deer illegally during the 2015-2016 deer season. he's accused of illegal weapons possession and failure to tag ability her deer among many other charges. >> pennsylvania governor tom wolf was in philadelphia today getting support for his plan to increase education funding. he toured penn treaty in fishtown. the visit is part of the governor's schools that teach tour. wolf wants to increase spending for education and has been visiting school districts all around the state.

>> we're checking that accuweather forecast. cecily tynan is at the "action news" big board for us. >> temperatures are going to plummet this weekend and i'm already on the couch with my remote in hand. >> you know, i'm not even going give you a hard time. perfect weekend to be a couch potato. this is the first time ever, hm, because it is going to get brutally cold. even now temperatures are generally in the 20's and we do have some snow showers, really light snow showers over chester county, route 30 near downingtown, route one heading towards chadds ford, they're all moving to the south and east, so wilmington, media will be seeing some of these. these are right lane light instability snow showers, the snow squalls are still out to our north and west. wind chills right now pretty

cold but it's going to get a lot colder. it's 17 degrees in philadelphia. feels like nine in allentown, feels like 25 in wildwood. feels like 18 in wilmington and it feels like 2 degrees in the poconos. satellite6 along with action radar showing our next arctic front. we had one roll through already. the next one right now is sitting across the great lakes and this will be heading through in the overnight hours and as it does, it likely will kick up some snow squalls. so, tonight the overnight low down to 19 degrees in philadelphia. 16 in allentown. 22 the boardwalk. wilmington 20. and this overnight low is the high for tomorrow. as we head through the day, the temperatures will be dropping. so future tracker showing around 11 o'clock tonight, this is when we begin to see some snow squalls really breaking out to the north and west of philadelphia. not everyone will see them but anyone who does, you'll get that brief whiteout conditions, could coat the ground in a platter of minutes. by 5 o'clock in the morning some more and then as we head through the afternoon want to show you what happens. we'll actually likely see some

of these and these are actually lake effect snow bands really making the 300-mile trek from the great lakes and the reason why the winds. the winds are going to be fierce tomorrow. a wind advisory has been posted. we're looking at wind gusts really through the day tomorrow 45 to 55 miles per hour and that's what will be pulling down that very cold air. future tracker showing tomorrow 1 o'clock in the afternoon wind chills generally below zero, three below in philadelphia, nine below in allentown. one below atlantic city. the poconos 22 degrees below zero. 26 below by 8 o'clock in the poconos. zero in philadelphia and sunday morning this is when the wind chills really bottom out. we're looking at wind chills anywhere from about 10 to nearly 30 degrees below zero, so this is why it's a great weekend just to stay indoors. and also make sure your pets are indoors. check on the elderly and a good idea to just let the frost kind of trickle a little

>> hello again and here's what's happening on "action news" tonight. a shooting at an arizona high school leaves two young girls dead. the latest on this developing story coming up. plus, a world class sports museum is about to nope camden county. we'll take an early peek at some of the rare items you'll find there. and body art that goes way beyond hearts and butterflies. the philadelphia tattoo arts convention kicked off today with some of the most intricate ink you could imagine. >> now the details. we begin with that developing news from arizona where two 15-year-old girls were slot and killed inside of a high school in a phoenix suburb. police say there was no danger to other students saying it's likely to have been a murder-suicide or double suicide. the shots went off just as school was about to start for the day sending more than 2,000 students into lockdown. police arrived within moments and found the bodies of the two sophomores lying next to one another. a gun was that found nearby. investigators are still piecing together exactly what happened and don't yet note

relationship between the two girls. meanwhile hundreds of worried parents rushed to nearby staging area to wait word but officers quickly assured them that the situation was under control. >> i'm so worried not just for my child but for everybody's kid. i'm a little upset because no one is telling us nothing. we don't know who's child was shot, if it was faculty or just a mishap. we don't know. >> what we found out thus far and what i really want to get out there is, one, we don't believe there's any outstanding suspects. these two young women were found next to each other. there was a weapon found beside them. >> social workers and counselors will be available to students and staff when classes resume on tuesday. >> now to another developing story of fire at this industrial park in somerset county new jersey is still burning a full day after it ignited and the smoke could be seen for miles even as far away as our area. >> tonight the fire has been contained but it's still not

under control. we get the latest from tony yates from our sister station. >> reporter: 24 hours of a raging fire destroying a half million square feet of warehouses, two buildings burning nonstop and in deep freeze conditions. how difficult was it to monitor and battle this blaze overnight with the cold and with the wind? >> it was terrible. the winds, the cold, the freezing, you know, we have to rotate our people a lot more often. we're having problems with ice, of course, apparatus problems. >> reporter: the site is an old military base owned by the federal government but leased to a private company whose tenants use the building for storage. firefighters have managed to keep the flames from jumping to two other buildings on site and that's been a monumental task. >> the other problem that we have on this site because of the old -- the infrastructure that's there is that we don't have real good water pressure and so that's why you see these tanker operations going on. we're actually bringing water in. so on top of the weather, on top of the commodity, the

stuff that's burning inside of there, on top of the infrastructure issues, you put all that together it makes it a very difficult battle. >> reporter: with mutual aid, they have 50 to 100 firefighters working rotations round the clock and with the smoke that's been billowing for hours across miles. >> we had dep and the epa on site doing air quality monitoring. there is no public -- imminent public health threat at this point but they continue to monitor and will continue to do so through the weekend. >> reporter: they're asking everyone to avoid the smoke though there are no major air quality concerns. but they say it could be days before the fire is completely out and no idea yet how it started. two firefighters suffered minor injuries on the site. they will be okay and they actually said that late today the air quality in this area has improved so there are those fierce winds kicking up the flames n hillsborough tony yates channel6 "action news. >> back here the search will continue tomorrow for a missing airman stationed at

dover air force base. he was last seen at his apartment complex on kearnsy court. his truck was found earlier this week. dover police are processing the truck for evidence. the air force and delaware state polices are helping with the search. >> a southwest philadelphia woman lab sentenced to four to eight years in prison for the death of hadder own four-year-old daughter. 24-year-old josephita brown was arrested in july of 2013 after her daughter see fleet at a was taken tseanita wastake. >> the mercer county county trenton hall annex is a step closer to completion. workers put the final beam in place during a topping off ceremony here today. construction on the new building started last summer. it will house an art gallery classrooms and a multi purpose room. >> sports fans rejoice as the new museum in our area features never before seen

"action news" new jersey correspondent nora muchanic has details. >> reporter: five years in the making and with a treasure trove of sports memorabilia packed inside, the depace sports museum in collingswood is finally opening and sports nuts are going to lover it. >> when they walk in here i would like them to feel a sense of awe and inspiration. >> reporter: assembled by collector dr. nicholas dee patchy a local cardiologist this collection a valued at over $30 million. >> my dad was joe frazier's cardiologist since the 1980's up until he died back in 2011. we have his and mohammed ali's trunks from the fight of the century. >> reporter: jim thorpe's football helmet on display and there's mike sh might's locker from the old vet stadium. it's considered a world class collection that includes all sports. >> either the best known example or the only known example.

clogged and of course they are. this is the vine street expressway busy in both directions. this one not quite as clogged. this is the 30 bypass just a little westbound slowing here by 282. you see people tapping their brakes. was might also see if you look really closely are just a few snow flurries flying here in chester county but at this point the roadway is damp at worst and it's not really impacting travel a whole lot. if you're trying to find snow in the poconos headed up the northeast extension northbound this afternoon plenty of slowing coming out of the mid-county tolls but our crash just beyond the toll plaza is gone. however delays are spilling back onto the northbound blue route and the eastbound turnpike where speeds right now are just in the teens headed to the shore for the weekend there was an earlier crash on the eastbound expressway past williamstown. it's gone but still looking at just 10 miles per hour as you head toward williamstown and winslow this afternoon. and if you're headed to new york city for the weekend taking a northeast corridor train on amtrak up there, expect half hour delays because of some track problems in one of the tunnels under the hudson river. or you could just stay here

>> here's an encouraging sign warm weather is just around the corner sam's pizza on the wildwood boardwalk is open for business. booths were packed and pies were flying out of the oven for this the same day of sam's spring season. restaurant is only opened on weekends for now. it won't be long until it's time to grab a slice after a day on the beach. >> can't wait. adam is here to tell us the real deal on the weather. it is going to be brutal. >> it really is. brutal. it's going to be dangerous at times. record breaking. we've got wind advisories. we've got also wind chill advisories, so a lot to go through. as we look at double scan live radar we're dealing with flurries philadelphia to the south and west across wilmington, even a few in southern cape play county and around kent county as we close in. again these are just light flurries at the present time,

maybe a little heavier around newark and in parts of new castle county, maybe sugar coating the grounds just a little bit especially new castle county you can see a little brighter white here but the lighter grays in southeastern pennsylvania and also parts of new jersey near woodbury and glassboro again just a few flurries. we're awaiting the actual arctic front to bring in some more robust snow showers and snow squalls a little later tonight. 17 in philadelphia, flynn in allentown, 13 in reading. 19 in millville. so, wind chills in the teens area wide and that arctic front is right here. you can see that bright white band of some of those snow squalls now entering the united states. that will continue to push to the south and east and won't arrive here until at least 11 o'clock in those far northwestern suburbs and then after midnight in the wee hours of the morning for the rest of us. so, for tonight if you have to drive after midnight, work or you're going somewhere, be very cautious. some of these snow squalls will reduce visibility and will coat the ground if spots. 16 to 19 for the overnight low and then beyond that arctic

front it really opens the door to those really strong winds and low wind chills. by 8 o'clock tomorrow morning, feeling seven below allentown reading, two in philadelphia, three below in trenton. winds tomorrow 45 to 55 miles an hour and that will continue to pull those wind chills even in the afternoon tomorrow below zero across the entire viewing area, even the shore and then sunday morning wind chills 10 below in atlantic city, millville, philadelphia, 17 below trenton and near 30 below up in the poconos where a wind chill advisory and a wind chill warning up there in the poconos will be in effect. records to watch on sunday morning, two in philadelphia, could be record tying from 1979. two below for the air temperature in allentown would be a record tying in trenton possibly at zero and tying in the poconos at 12 degrees below zero for that air temperature. then we'll be watching the next storm. it's not here on sunday. sunday is less wind, sunshine,

arctic high in place. it's just really cold. then that high quickly escapes to the north and east, so even though we have cold flare place, it'... air in place it'st going to last through the next storm. does start off as snow for everybody. monday late afternoon and evening there could be a coating to 3-inches going into monday evening and monday neither and then a period of ices ago we transition to a soaking rain for tuesday as this low cuts to the west and it pulls a lot of warm air in. we could be dealing with runoff issues because the ground will be frozen. an inch of snow of rain late monday night into tuesday could pond on some of the roads. the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast overall the weekend dangerously cold, 19, dropping throughout the afternoon on saturday with wind chills below zero. sunny but brutal for valentine's day of 16 degrees. and then we'll watch for that light snow to break out late on monday afternoon and evening, 33 degrees. a quick period of sleet, freezing rain before it goes over to a soaking rain in time in philadelphia for tuesday morning's rush at 52 degrees.
