is dead at the age of 79. he died in his sleep at a resort in west texas. scalea was 79 years old. he was appointed by president reagan back in 1986 and approved a vote, was approved by a vote 98 to zero in the senate. first italian american on the court, maintaining a solid conservative streak in his opinions. scalea was a native of princeton new jersey and survived by his wife and nine children. world news saturday will have much more on the death of scalea coming up after "action news" at 6:30. now to the dangerously cold conditions, all across our region. in addition to the temperatures with the wind chills making it feel like near zero, some parts of our area saw a bit of snow dropping a coating on sidewalks, streets in some spots. you see, here's intrepid folks on market street in center city were contending with nasty wind as they made their way across town this cold isn't going anywhere this weekend. meteorologist melissa magee is at the big board with the first check of the accu weather forecast, melissa.

>> walter, get used to the arctic invasion that moved in last night and stays with us for the rest of our weekend. the currently outside in philadelphia coming in at 16 degrees. eleven in allentown. the current air number in the poconos 1 degree below zero. seventeen in dover, and 18 a along the coast there in beach haven. most of the day we had those blustery wind out of the northwest should also trigger lake effect snow showers down wind of the lakes that traveled across the delaware and lehigh valleys. peak wind gusts atlantic city 44 miles an hour. poconos 43. forty-one in reading. gust today in dover of 39 and as high as 38 miles an hour and philadelphia. you factor that in it feels much colder. check out current wind chill numbers across the region, 3 degrees below zero at this hour in philadelphia a feeling like zero for wilmington and millville. 19 degrees below zero as we go through the north up through the poconos. in fact, wind chill advisory has been issued. it just went up at 6:00 this evening and stays up until 9:00 a.m. on sunday.

crash occurred on interstate 78 just before 10:00 o'clock this morning in fredericksburg. tractor trailers, trucks and cars were tangled up across three lanes of the the highway. the at least 40 people were hospitalized and more than 70 others went to emergency shelf tours get out of the cold. the bus carrying the penn state the lehigh valley mens basketball team was among vehicles involved. several members of the team and staff were taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation but we're told no one on the team bus was seriously injured. investigators say drifting snow was reported in the area the at the time of the wreck but it is still not clear if that was the reason behind the crash. fire fighters are facing a daunting task in the city a's frank for section as they battled a six a alarm fire there. three injuries have been reported and that includes a fire fighter. a "action news" reporter jeff chirico is live at the scene with the full details, jeff? >> reporter: walter, still very active scene here, in frankford as you can see utility crews, fire crew is

still here, this ladder truck behind me still pouring water on the building, trying to put hot spots out. some eight and a half hours, after the fire started. you can see what water has done to that building. it looks like just one big brick of ice. as you can imagine these arctic temperatures make fighting a fire that much more difficult. it was a battle against a fire and the weather. gusty wind, fanned the flames that broke out at joe's auto body shop on the 4600 block of griscom street around 9:30 a.m. fire spread to a half dozen buildings on frankford avenue shutting down services on the el. >> this is a a challenge because of the cold and wind conditions but members of the company are doing a good job to maintain safe operation. >> reporter: with temperatures in the teens water encased anything it touch in the thick layer of ice. >> we will see frozen lines, frozen ice on the buildings. so once you have water flowing in and this type of temperature, it freezes up

quickly. >> reporter: now neighboring buildings, and she smelled smoke. >> i opened up my backyard door and i seen flames in the other backyard, and smoke coming through walls, the bricks on my side. >> reporter: she got out with her two dogs and cat, who were helped by red paw relief. red cross is assisting people displaced by the fire which took five hours to get under control, with nothing more than the clothes on her back she now worries about what happens next. >> i'm nervous. now we have to relocate so we don't know how much damage is in our building. >> reporter: fire crews and utility crews are expect to be here all night. the market frankford el, also, shut down, right now, in this area, likely will not, start operations again, until tomorrow. now, as we have said earlier, two people, two residents and one fire fighter were all taken to the hospital but they will all be okay. the owner of the the auto shop tells me he did lose his dog in the fire, a cause to this

fire has not yet been determined. we are live from frankford, jeff chirico for channel six "action news". thanks, jeff. another fire ravaged an apartment complex earlier this morning in bucks county. flames went up at 5:30 a.m. in the 2100 block of veterans highway in middletown. crews brought the fire under control just after 6:00. the red cross responded to the scene and is now helping victims whose homes were destroyed. nobody was injured, no word on how the whole thing started. a towering figure in philadelphia's journalism has died. asa moore, former columnist and editor at philadelphia inquirer passed away last night. moore was among the first african-american reporters for the paper. he spent 43 years there, writing stories that shined a light on communities and people that lived there who would have otherwise gone forgotten. moore also mentored thousands of young people over the years and was founding members of the national association of black journalist. mr. more merries survived by

wise wife, linda wright moore, his son hazel junior and his daughter. he was 75 years old. hundreds turned out today for an emotional good bye to a young boy who died during a house fire last week in norristown. "action news" reporter trish hartman has more. >> reporter: friend and family members called out his nickname, manman as his casket was lifted on a fire truck. sidewalk outside the church was lined with people who came to say good bye to sanford harling the third who died in the fire in his norristown home february 5th. >> he chose to go in and try to save his father. that is courage on his side. he didn't think about himself. he thought about his dad. >> reporter: family members tell us all five people made it out safely but manman ran back in when he thought his father, who was recovering from hip surgery was still inside. his father ended up jumping from a second story window. he is still recovering from a broken back at paoli hospital.

a medical team transported him to the church for his son's funeral. the boy's mother was held up by loved ones as she left the church those who attended the services say focus was on harling's sacrifice and heroism. >> i think it was a heartfelt experience for all of us in the community, it makes us look at ourselves and ask the the questions would we make that same kind of sacrifice. >> reporter: while the services brought the community together to have grief, hopefully it gave them a chance to bring back good memories of a boy with a larger than life personality. >> manman, we would go on picnics together. >> he gave us a reason to smile. >> full of life, always joking around, had a good time, loved the coaches, loved his teammates. >> he was a good boy. he will be truly missed by each and everyone of us. he was a hero. >> reporter: reporting from norristown, trish hartman, channel six a "action news". friend and family with dozens of fellow officers gathered today to remember

philadelphia police officer john pawlowski. they gathered at broad and olney in the logan section at the very location where officer pawlowski was shot and killed seven years ago this month. he died while trying to break up a dispute between man who ended up killing him and a taxi driver. the shooter has been sentenced to life in prison. much more to come on "action news", a local youngsters will create philadelphia a's next mural. plus intrepid souls at the beach today, oh, boy in sea isle city for a frosty dip in the ocean. we will take you to the 22nd annual polar plunge. plus jeff skversky has sports when "action news" comes right back. ♪

you could see the action cam was outside earlier this afternoon there in center city. you can see light snow and flurries moving in underneath mostly cloudy sky. it is all because of the blustery wind and lake effect snow showers down wind of the lake. all that is starting to shut off at least for tonight but cold air is definitely sticking around. high today in philadelphia a a little deceiving. 24 degrees. little bit after midnight but for most of the the day temperatures were hovering in the mid to high teens, with wind chills, near zero. the wind gusts still a factor. not as bad as they were earlier today. the gusting to 31 miles an hour in philadelphia. thirty-three in dover. twenty-nine in millville. we have gusts a high as 26 in the poconos and 38-mile an hour wind gusts there in atlantic city. when you factor in the wind on your skin it feels much colder. so you will want to dress for wind chill numbers that are currently in the 0-degree range if not below zero. as we go throughout the overnight hours we can see
