5:00 pm
around the tri-state. but first the latest from accuweather. meteorologist cecily tynan starts us off at the big board. hey, cecily. >> hi, rick. storm tracker6 live double scan slowing we have four types of precipitation right now. we have snow in the white, we have sleet and freezing rain in the blue and we've got just plane rain in the green and that transition is happening from southeast to the northwest. so, zooming in on storm tracker we have that transition over to sleet, it's actually just a little bit north of that blueline. it's just right now south of philadelphia, woodbury, glassboro, berlin, medford lakes, you are getting that combination of the sleet and the freezing rain. what happens, there's warm air moving in and it's higher in the atmosphere. the atmosphere works from the top down. you don't get that changeover to the surface for a few hours but there has happened right now along the garden state parkway through tuckahoe fortescue approaching route 49 and we will see this line of rain moving up to the northwest, gradually as we head through the evening hours but it's just a slow process.
5:01 pm
so, this is what we can expect. as far as accumulating snow, this will only be in the northwest suburbs from now and we're not looking at much. we're looking at about a coating to an inch of snow. the problem tonight, though, untreated surfaces are going to be slick with that warm air moving in the upper atmosphere, that change first happens to sleet and then freezing rain so that ice is my big concern as we head through the evening hours. the biggest concern for this will be where the cold air holds in the longest and this will be all areas really north and west of the pennsylvania turnpike, through the lehigh valley and the poconos. this is where we could get a pretty light glaze of ice, about .10 of an inch to .5 but that could cause more problems with the icing. it's about the temperatures. for details and the time line let's head to adam. >> cecily southern areas along the shore temperatures are already bouncing into the upper 30's, atlantic city airport at 36 degrees, wildwood 37 degrees but millville dover flirting with that freezing point and even
5:02 pm
though you see your temperature bump to, say, 33, 34 degrees, you can still have some freezing rain because it's going the take extra time this go round to warm throws surfaces because of that extreme arctic air we had the last few days and in fact it's still in the 20's wilmington, philadelphia, up through the lehigh valley. but we'll see that rise be quicker and quicker as we go through the late evening and overnight hours. in fact, we start to really jump it up between 10 o'clock and 1 o'clock in philadelphia. 35 to 40 degrees and then by 7 o'clock in the morning, our temperatures up to 45 so we're expecting a 15-degree rise in temperature overnight tonight with that southerly wind and that change to rain, the timing central parts of delaware and southern new jersey it's happening now along the shore and continues to work to the north at 7:00 p.m. for wilmington, philadelphia, up through trenton between about 7:00 and 10 o'clock tonight and then those far northwestern suburbs near the lehigh valley, northern bucks county, parts of red and the poconos, 10:00 p.m. to around 1 o'clock in the morning. future tracker will show by
5:03 pm
1 o'clock tomorrow afternoon, though, as low pressure rides to our north and west, we will see a very heavy area of rain passing through the region. about a two-hour window of heavy rain tomorrow, about a half inch to an inch and that could lead to some flooding on the roadways and smaller streams. rick, when meteorologist cecily tynan comes back she'll time this exactly for you on future tracker in that full accuweather forecast. >> all right adam we'll check back with you a little bit later. our coverage continues tonight with "action news" reporter christie ileto live at independence mall with how people are dealing with this latest mess of wintry weather. hi, christie. >> reporter: hey, there, rick, yeah the snow has tapered off for the most. the snowfall earlier has left some very snow packed and slippery sidewalks and then you take a look at market and sixth and it's kind of slushy here out on the roads and many of the people that we spoke to have really saying they're trying to make the best of what mother nature has dumped.
