city airport 35 degrees but there's a warm front moving through so that means temperatures basically holding steady tonight, really not dropping off much so if you're out on the town on this friday night at 7 o'clock, 37, by 9 o'clock, 36 and by 11 o'clock, 35 degrees. while we're in the 30's right now, if you look to the west, cincinnati it's 65, chicago in february it's 62 degrees and that's the air mass that moves in tomorrow. so, look at this. a taste of spring. yes, this is typical of early april. tomorrow's high 62 degrees. sunday we drop down to 58 degrees. we're talking about temperatures 10 to 15 degrees above normal. so, kind of hard to believe by monday morning, some areas could be waking up to a touch of snow. i'll talk about that coming up in the full accuweather forecast. rick and monica. >> all right cecily thank you. a grieving mother's determination sparked a fight for safety in bucks county. tonight four years after tragedy struck that woman is celebrating a big triumph.

>> back in 2012 sharon rearick's son john was killed on new falls road. an addition to that road has been improved in hopes that what happened to him will never happen again. >> trish heart assemblyman in middletown township tonight with the full story. trish. >> reporter: well, rick, monica, this busy stretch of new falls road is where john rearick lost his life in 2012. a memorial still stands across the street and plans to make this stretch of road a little bit safer are under way thanks in large part to rearick's mother. >> we got the approval and i got the standing ovation. >> reporter: sharon spoke with "action news" in her levittown home her granddaughter on her happen less than a day after the vote she had been waiting for for four years. >> i started it as a grieving mother but everybody else helped make it happen. >> reporter: with the unanimous vote from bristol township council plans will move forward to install signs

along a stretch of new falls road where her son was killed by a hit and run driver. police say 23-year-old john was walking home from a bar in july of 2012. jonathan simmons later turned himself in and pleaded guilty but sharon wasn't satisfied. >> in the beginning they told me many other families have tried to do this. and have been unsuccessful. john was special ed. i learned how to fight in the very beginning. >> reporter: for years she collected signatures and went to countless meetings. in december she made another attempt out of desperation. >> i wrote a letter to the secretary of transportation. luckily richard is on facebook. never, ever expected her to respond. >> reporter: but richards did respond. then in january, news that penndot would pay $1.7 million for the sidewalk as long as middletown and bristol township agreed to maintain them. those votes came this week. >> we actually had customers come and sign petitions. >> reporter: the stretch of

road includes penn jersey. >> huge difference people can walk down new falls road without walking down the middle of the street. >> reporter: now rearick has started a nonprofit organization advocating for more sidewalks and pedestrian safety. penndot says the project is now in the design phase and if everything goes smoothly construction will be under way by next year. we're live in middletown township, trish hartman, channel6 "action news." monica. >> thank you. dupont says it will keep a major presence in delaware after its merger with dow chemical. once those companies merge, they will then be split into three separate sectors. today the companies announced their agricultural spinoff will be headquartered in wilmington. vernon odom will have more on what that means for local jobs and how delaware leaders are reacting to the news. that's coming up tonight at 6:00. >> right now thousands of people are paying their final respects to the late supreme court justice antonin scalia. let's take a live picture from the supreme court here in

washington. scalia is lying in repose at this hour. all morning long eight of his supreme court colleagues visited his casket and just 90 minutes ago the president and first lady bid farewell as well. in trenton, scalia's birthplace flags flew at half-staff in his honor. scalia died last weekend at a resort in texas. he was 79 years old. our coverage of justice scalia's final farewell continues online at 6abc.com. we'll stream tomorrow's funeral mass in washington live on our web site and that begins at 11:00 a.m. >> a philadelphia man is recovering after he was beaten with a baseball bat during a robbery. it happened about 1:30 this morning at a home here in the 1800 block of east cambria street in port richmond. police say the man had invite add woman from the neighborhood inside but moments later two men also forced their way in. police say they began hitting the man way bat and a gun. the woman joined the suspects in that attack. all three were able to get away after taking cash and two

video game consoles. >> from our new jersey news room tonight, local democrats say they've agreed on a plan to make the state's minimum wage $15 an hour. senate president steve sweeney and assembly speaker vincent preyacht tow initially had competing plans. today they announce add compromise. the plan would gradually raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour over six years. this afternoon new jersey business leaders bashed the plan saying would it have a "chilling effect." governor chris christie has also said he does not support such a measure. two local leaders took a pledge today to stop hate that divides our communities. pennsylvania state senator arthur haywood and philadelphia city councilman david oh signed an anti bigotry pledge in north philadelphia. the pledge created by the arab american institute promises to uphold civil discourse and not

engage in bigotry and also to speak out against those who do. >> it was an inspiring day for some north philadelphia high school students. today they watched a documentary detailing the fight for integration at girard college during the 1960's and it centered around cecil b. moore a philadelphia lawyer civil activist and freedom fighters. annie mccormick has more. >> reporter: a history lesson came in the form avenue documentary played before the students of crystal ray high school. cecil's people follows the cecil b. moore freedom fighters and their vigorous campaign to open girard college to blacks in 1965. it includes the stop martin luther king jr. made. >> now is the time to straighten up girard college. >> girard college was a complicated legal problem in which to overturn a will that denied access to school to people of color. >> reporter: the film truly came to life in the school's auditorium.

afternoon suppose it could be worse here along the blue route 476 slow northbound from the schuylkill to the mid-county tolls. there's friday afternoon volume. there are people heading to the poconos and there was an earlier crash on the eastbound pennsylvania turnpike that's now long gone but some slow speeds linger coming east of valley forge. still have the wreck in whitemarsh, township by p and i automotive along ridge pike at crescent avenue. on the big picture slow speeds, no accidents or anything on the schuylkill and 95. but some of those speeds are quite slow, 15 miles per hour. monroe township a crash along the black horse pike, 42, between pine street by the red carpet inn and sicklerville road by the walgreens and septa's 101 trolley running with delays because of mechanical issues. we'll check it again, rick and monica, in the next half hour. >> okay we'll see you then. thanks matt. much more still to come on "action news" at 5:00 tonight. new details in the fight between apple and the fbi. the increasing pressure on the tech giant over its stand for personal privacy amid a terrorism investigation.

fight against apple. today they filed a motion to force apple to comply with an order to help the fbi crack a phone used by one of the san bernadino attackers. the fbi sings thinks there could be key evidence inside the phone. farook and his wife launched that deadly at thank killed 14 people. apple executive tim cook argues the decision is an overreach of government power. this case could work its way up to the u.s. supreme court: monica. >> the literary world is mourning the loss of an icon tonight. harper lee author of "to kill a mockingbird" died this morning. "to kill a mockingbird" was published in 1960 and to date sales have topped 40 million copies of the book. lee was a private person who lived a quiet life in alabama. she didn't release another novel until just last year. five decades after mocking bird was published. today the president of lee's publish company harper collins remember the author as a brilliant writer extraordinary woman of great joyfulness

humility and kindness. she was 89 years old. >> energy stocks edged lower. the markets wavered through the trading day as the price of crude oil continued to retreat. a surge in oil prices fueled a spike on the markets earlier this week, the dow losing 21 points by the closing bell today, the nasdaq picking up about 17 points on the day and the s & p 500 stayed nearly even. west chester based qvc says about a hundred employees at its pennsylvania offices could be out of a job as it establishes a new office in poland. qvc called the move crucial to its long term strategy. the new office will support areas in finance, had. r, it and legal. health check tonight a top official with the world health organization says the zika virus will not ruin the olympic games in brazil. >> he says brazil will host a fantastic olympics. health reporter and registered nurse ali gorman joins us with

more on this story tonight. ali. >> that that official dr. bruce al ward is in charge of the zika response team. he says the mosquito borne virus will be "way down by the time the games begin for two reasons." one it will be brazil's winter so the number of mosquitos will go down and two, he says the venues are in confined areas so it will be easier to control the mosquito population. he also expects many brazilians to have developed some immunity by then. the country has recorded more than 1 million suspected cases of the virus. the concern is whether it leads to a serious birth defect in babies born to women exposed when they're pregnant. meanwhile the house is rejected president obama's proposal for $1.8 billion to fight zika virus. the lawmakers want the cdc to use money left over from the ebola fund. federal health officials say that's against budget rules and they still need the ebola money for ebola. cdc officials say they'll

continue their work to protect americans while the funding is being worked out. also today, a message about cardiac rehab. after someone suffers a heart attack or has heart surgery, they're prescribed a cardiac rehabilitation program. it can be life saving but less than 13 percent of people actually participate. cardiac rehab is typically a 12-week program where patients are given an exercise class with doctors and nurses monitoring your progress. they gradually build back unyour heart capacity. studies show people who do these programs are less likely to suffer another heart attack, less likely to go back into the hospital and more likely to live longer. >> it's really crucial because it's not just about exercising. it's about learning how to eat, learning to stop smoking, controlling your stress factors. it's really a crucial part of having a healthy life after your heart event. >> cardiac rehab is covered by most insurance plans after

>> take a look at this. the hubble telescope took this image avenue massive black hole 300 million night years away from earth. you cannot see the black hole because it pulls in all the light around it. sigscientists look at the star nearby to determine how they behave and how big the black hole s this one is larger than 100 of our suns combined. can you even imagine. a new space carrier could turn regular civilians into astronauts. a short time ago take this look virgin galactic rolled out a new version of its spaceship two rocket. the company is preparing to resume flight testing for the first time since an accident destroyed the original rocket killing one of the pilots in 2014. well, it is now designed to fly with two crew members and up to 66 passengers.

those lucky few will travel to the fringes of space with a view of earth below if all goes as planned this time. >> wow. well, the philadelphia flower show is just around the corner and to celebrate one local high school has created quite a display of springtime. highland elementary in abington is holding its annual junior flower show. students created their own artistic and floral designs which will be judged by the philadelphia horticultural society and winning entries will be on display at the philadelphia flower show next month. many of the students attended special workshops to learn how to create these works of wonder. very nice. one pennsylvania lottery ticket holder has won a thousand dollars a week for life. a ticket sold at the wawa on gay street in west chester matched all five balls but not the green cash ball on last night's drawing. those numbers are 21, 24, 37, 38 and 49. the cash ball was four. it's just the second time a pennsylvania ticket has won a

>> time now for accuweather at the "action news" big board. >> meteorologist cecily tynan here with the accuweather word for the upcoming week. we're looking good. >> the word is warm. warm exactly if you're heading to the slopes this weekend, get ready for spring skiing. we're live taking a look at spring mountain right now. great conditions for skiing with temps in the 30's. little bit of wind chill factor but compared to last weekend, it certainly feels a lot better. currently in philadelphia 37 degrees. allentown 36. cape may 37. atlantic city airport 35. and wilmington currently 34 degrees. satellite6 along with action radar showing that we did see some sunshine earlier today but then the clouds rolling in. all this cloud cover in advance of a warm front that will be moving through tonight and what that will do is usher in a surge of april-like temperatures tomorrow. so, tonight mostly cloudy with that warm front moving

through. temperatures essentially holding steady, not dropping much. 32 degrees in the cooler suburbs, about 34 degrees for center city, winds out of the south-southwest up to about 14 miles per hour. and tomorrow winds could gust up to 30 miles per hour but they're southwesterly so this is going to be pulling up unseasonably warm air. what a difference a week makes. 62 degrees in philadelphia. allentown 58. cape may 54. and dover getting up to about 61 degrees. so, future tracker showing sunday at 3 o'clock temperatures a little bit cooler behind a cold front that moves through tomorrow night. 58, 57 degrees in philadelphia, probably reaching a high of about 58 degrees. temperatures in the upper 40's across the lehigh valley so still on the warm side. so, when we do see a touch of snow in the far northwest suburbs, that should really be melting on the ground. sunday at 9 o'clock we begin to see low pressure moving along that stalled frontal boundary and you can see that there is going to be kind of a thin soap of some wet snow

generally north and west of philadelphia the wee hours of the morning on monday, moves out very quickly but north of the pennsylvania turnpike you wake up monday morning, don't be surprised if you see a little bit of a grassy coating of snow. association the five day forecast showing tomorrow 62 degrees, partly sunny. get outside, enjoy it, it will be a breezy day. on sunday it turns cloudy, 58 degrees. rain sunday night, again some wet snow north and west. on monday it's breezy and cooler, 49 degrees. and then next week a coastal storm tuesday, late rain could be, some wet snow in the northwest suburbs, 44 degrees. continues through wednesday. what is lined that? i'll talk about that coming up in the full accuweather 7-day forecast. get outside tomorrow and enjoy it. >> sounds great. >> thanks cecily. >> much more ahead in our next half hour. a delaware tradition that has been shelved the last few years has been catapulted back to our region. we'll show you. >> a group of youngsters play the part of their elders in montgomery county. this wasn't just about dressing up. we'll explain.

>> hello again. here's what's happening on "action news" friday night. the presidential can candidates are clamoring for support as voters in two states get ready to decide who they'll support. we're live with the very latest. also important news for anyone who owns a hoverboard. what investigators say could lead to a nationwide recall. >> meet max the first trained therapy pig in the state of new jersey who proves you don't is to be fluffy and have pause to help people out. i'm nora muchanic in burlington. i'll have that story. >> now the details. it is crunch time for 2016 presidential candidates. they are on both sides zeroing on two states whose voters will decide in the next few days who gets their support for the nomination. those dates will be crucial for both republican and democratic hopefuls wanting to stay in the race. republican voters in south carolina go to the polls tomorrow. 50 delegates are at stake. tomorrow as well democratic voters will caucus in nevada, 43 delegates up for grabs there. then on tuesday, nevada's republicans will caucus to decide who gets their 30

delegates. neither state by the way is winner take all. and abc's megan hughes live in columbia south carolina tonight with more on all of this. hi, megan. >> reporter: monica, good evening. let's talk about republican frontrunner donald trump. throughout his campaign he's been talking about building this wall. now, today despite the pope's comments he's doubling down. >> ♪ >> reporter: donald trump fired up a myrtle beach crowd about his plans to build a wall. >> who is going to pay for the wall? who? >> reporter: this after pope francis said a persian who builds walls and not bridges isn't christian. the vatican clarifying this morning the pope wasn't referring specifically to trump. trump says he thinks the mexican government manipulated the pontiff. >> they had him convinced that illegal immigration is like a wonderful thing. not wonderful for us. it's wonderful for mexico. >> reporter: the polls show trump with a shrinking lead

among south carolina voters. >> i think this is a best of four way going forward so it's six to four and it could be a three way race after tomorrow. >> reporter: cruz appearing with duck dine city star phil robinson. >> let's talk about man who knows hugh to shoot a duck. >> reporter: the texas senator is under fire itself with court challenges to his name on the ballot in several states the latest illinois and new york. cruz was born in canada but says he's eligible for the presidency because his mother was a u.s. citizen. democrats hillary clinton and bernie sanders are both focused on this weekend's caucus in nevada. >> show the world democracy is alive and well here in nevada. on 6abc.com. also abc news reporters and cameras will be out in force as voting ends and the results come in. our coverage starts at 5:00 p.m. tomorrow. >> in other news tonight, the deadly drunk driving case involving texas affluenza teenager ethan couch is moving to adult court. that means the 18-year-old could face 120 days in jail, then finish his 10 year probation. couch was given that sentence following the 2013 crash that killed four people. couch and his mother disappeared back in december as investigators looked into whether he'd violated his probation. they were later found in mexico and deported. >> ♪ now to an important consumer alert for anyone who owns a hoverboard. the government is cracking down on the two wheeled scooters saying they are unsafe n a letter to manufacturers, importers and retailers the u.s. consume are product safety commission says it will seize or recall any hoverboards if they fail to meet federal safety standards. this is due to 52 reports of

fires caused by hover boards in 24 states since december of last year. federal authorities say many of those incidents wouldn't have happened if the units met existing standards in the first place. several airlines and college campuses including temple and rutgers have already banned hover boards. >> world news tonight with david muir will have much more on the government ruling on hover boards as well as the presidential race going into the weekend. you can watch it all tonight at 6:30 following "action news" at 6:00. >> the delaware state fire marshall is investigating a two alarmer that destroyed a business in new castle and center a firefighter to the hospital. this morning's huge flames and lots of smoke poured from the building here in the 300 block of west bay boulevard in new castle. this is a vehicle repair garage owned by the cirillo brothers company. the firefighter hurt is in serious condition at christiana hospital. the red cross is now helping one person who lived above that garage. >> one person -- >> and a person was hospitalized after this

accident involving a tractor-trailer on i-95. chopper6 hd was over the northbound lanes near the walt whitman bridge about 6:30 a.m. the driver of this big rig lost control and crashed into a car as you see. that accident caused big delays during the morning rush. >> two men have been arrest heed for dumping a missing south jersey teenager's body in a rural area of salem county. they are charged with conspiracy and desecration of human remains. danielle minerva's body was discovered in a wooded area in allowaalloway townshiply she had been reported missing by her familiar in october. the cause her death has yet to be determined but police say there were no obvious signs of trauma. it has been 11 years to the day since danielle imbo and richard petrone jr. were last seen alive. today the fbi issued another plea to the public for any information. imbo and petrone were last seen leaving a south street bar in the late evening of

february 19th, 2005. they were riding in petrone's black 2001 dodge dakota pickup. investigators have turned up few promising leads but have not found the couple or the car. >> public's help is critical. we can't do anything without the help from the public and the leads they brought to us last time were great and we hope the same thing happens this year. >> there is a $50,000 reward for any information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible. anyone can can commit a tip to the crime commission. the number is on the screen,. >> the man who led police on a car chase through wilmington is in jail tonight charged with murder. robert smith killed his girlfriend. after his body was discovered police identified smith as a suspect but he left the scene before officers arrived. later that evening police spotted him driving on i-95. they began chasing him until smith crashed his car here in the 1500 block of linden

street. smith was taken to the wilmington hospital for minor injuries. he is now in police custody. also from our delaware news room an update on a story we first brought you yesterday. the state board of education has approved a controversial plan to redistrict wilmington schools. the city's much indication improvement commission recommended the changes. they include removing the christina school district from the city and moving those students to the red clay district. the plan now goes to the general assembly for approval. >> well, you've heard of therapy dogs. therapy horses. well, how about a therapy pig? "action news" jersey correspondent nora muchanic introduces us to a little guy named max who is bringing lots of smiles to folks in south jersey because he's apparently a bit of a ham. >> he's little, cute, fun, he snorts. >> reporter: and he squeals. he is maximus, max for short new jersey's first trained therapy pig. he belongs to resources for independent living a nonprofit that offers diverse mental

health and life skills programs in burlington cape may and cumberland and salem counties. max's job is to work with clients of all ages. >> he'll come up and he'll just sit in your lap and by being there and holding him it brings a calmness to that child. >> if somebody is feeling down an animal is a huge distraction and makes you feel a lot better and we've seen -- me seeing max today very exciting. >> scared me at first but then he's cute and i was surprised. >> reporter: you like him. >> yeah, i would like to be around him more. >> reporter: max has been doing this for about a month now and he really seems to like the attention and interaction. no doubt about it, he's a real ham. >> our goal is to take him out to schools so he's scheduled to go to the salem county special services school soon and eventually we'll bring him to nursing homes. >> reporter: max lovers to be bundled up. can you say pigs in a blankets. the little porker works out of the vineland office.

westbound side of the schuylkill so it is a slow go but both lanes are opened in both directions. there's an accident in trap this afternoon along third avenue, borough line road. one in warminster along street road at johnsville boulevard. crash in monroe township gloucester county along 42 between pine street by the red carpet inn and sicklerville road by the walgreens. everything is back to normal on septa's 101 trolley. delays ended but new schedules go into effect on sunday on the trolleys, the city and suburban buses and the subways so keep that in minds were w ine start next week. >> adorable first graders got to see what it was like to be a senior citizen today. students dressed up as elderly folks who were a hundred years old. part of the celebration marking their 100th day of class this year. and they also learned of empathy for others. among the group is our news director's daughter megan davis. >> much more still to come on

>> nearly a thousand books were delivered today to middle school students in the city's parkside section. the online jewelry company a rates new york donated the books. the students were able to read parts of the books today and could choose one to keep. well, after a two year absence an annual pumpkin flinging contest will return this year. the world championship event called punkin' chunkin' is making a come back. contestants launch pumpkins using homemade contraptions. the event was canceled last year and the year before that due to insurance and liability

the races tomorrow. big change from last weekend. last weekend we had this big dip in the jet stream with that arctic air pulling down. this weekend the jet stream buckles to the north and that pulls in temperatures in the 50's and 60's and 70's really not too far to our south, so enjoy it. i want to compare last sunday to this sunday. last sunday the high was only 20. the wind chill made it feel like 10 degrees below zero. this sunday, 58 degrees, so it's going to feel close to 70 degrees warmer this sunday than last sunday. that's 13 degrees above normal. but there is some precipitation moving in as we end the weekend. future tracker showing around 11 o'clock some spotty showers, lots of clouds and then we do have some rain moving into philadelphia in the wee hours of the morning but there's going to be a thin band of actually some wet snow, temperatures are very marginal for this so it looks like some wet snow in the northwest suburbs, out of here by monday morning by 8 o'clock just some leftover clouds but don't be surprised if you see

a grassy coating of some wet snow. the best chance of this would be north of the pennsylvania turnpike. the good news is with temperatures so warm over the weekend, all of that snow will be melting on the roads. so, the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast, breezy and warm tomorrow, the high 62 degrees, partly sunny. on sunday, the clouds roll in, 58 degrees. that rain and wet snow sunday night and behind that system we cool things off. on monday breezy with a high of 49 degrees. then things get messy late tuesday looks like some rain, some wet snow moving in, 44 degrees. looks like this storm could actually come in pieces with a second low late on wednesday. the track will determine whether this is all rain or mick in the northwest suburbs, forty four degrees. whatever happens then, thursday clouds and sunshine, 44 and friday partly sunny, 42 degrees. models are all over the place on this storm next week. i will have a live chat on my facebook page at 6:45 to talk

they came with nothing. they left with $400,000 in jewels. "action news" reporter gray hall has the full story. >> we need protection down on jeweler's row. >> reporter: jeff barsky owner of barsky's diamond center city asking for increased patrols after thieves target a story february 13th around 3:30 a.m. and got away with $400,000 worth of merchandise, mostly wedding bands and earrings. >> we used to have 24 hour police protection up to several years ago. this would have never happened. >> reporter: police released this surveillance video from the crime and hopes that that someone will recognize thieves. cameras got a pretty good image of one of their faces before they entered the store. officers say that the area is patrolled and they will continue to have a presence in the neighborhood. >> be very honest if i were going have a card sitting in any particular location throughout the night or 24 hours a day but we're conscious of the fact that's a heavily traveled area. >> reporter: investigators say this was no regular smash and grab. officers say these crooks
