building in olde city was evacuated tonight after a stay way collapsed sending one person to the hospital. "action news" reporter jeff chirico is live at the scene with the full story, jeff. >> reporter: hi walter, it happened in the stairwell behind me, a man who lives here was walking down the steps. when he got halfway down to that land willing, the landing essentially gave way and he fell some 8 feet down. sky six shows the scene as fire and rescue crews responded to a report of the man trapped in the stairwell. the it happened at this condo complex next to the historic christ church just after 6:00 p.m. the condo association president said the landing gave way as a senior citizen walk down these steps. >> he sort of wedged in with the bricks, and then something else was trying to pull him out but he kept sliding further down. >> reporter: he eventually fell 8 feet the to the ground. fire crews used a rope and basket to pull him to safety. >> he was alert, oriented, he

broke out last night at 9:30 at a condo complex in florence. today, crews discovered a body inside of the wreckage. six others suffered non-life threatening injuries, investigators have not yet determined how the fire started. police in berks county are investigating a stabbing near kutztown university. they are looking for these two men seen running from the scene. investigators say the 22-year old victim was stabbed early this morning. the kutztown student was taken to lehigh valley hospital, where he was admitted in serious condition. moving on to the accu weather forecast, last sat the day we were in the middle of the arctic blast. today felt like a slice of heaven as many of us got a winter taste of 60-degree temperatures. meteorologist melissa magee is at the big board with the first check of the accu weather forecast. >> hi there walter, days like this in the month of february are hard to come by. when they come we have to enjoy them while we can. high in philadelphia 60 degrees. the right the now we're coming in at 46. average for us this time of the year is 45. we're still above that at this

and he joins us live with the very latest, hi there, chad. >> reporter: hi walter. you have to give to it these students at penn state. they have been on their feet for so long. they are in such a great mood. you can see they are continuing to dance, i have not seen lot of fatigue so far. they are inspired. they are getting a lot of help from the performers on stage. the cheerleaders are here now. earlier it was athletic teams. it has been just a great night here at thon. the tremendous will of these penn state students is for families like the tommy, who was diagnosed with stage three skin cancer, when he was just nine years old. the four diamonds fund and thon made sure that the family didn't to have deal with the crippling debt that can come with cancer. >> it was just one less thing we had to stress about, we got to worry about tommy, his treatments and his health instead of war big paying the bills and we knew we were going to be okay.

thousands gathered this morning to pay respects to supreme court justice antonin scalia who died last week at the age of 79. mourners filled basilica of the national shrine of the immaculate conception in washington d.c. for the service. bells told for several minutes, while the car carrying the late justice arrived. pallbearers then carried the flag draped casket in the basilica following a procession of clergy men. we will have have much more at 11:30 including emotional tributes to the late justice. author harper lee was laid to rest today as well in alabama during a small private funeral. a few dozen family members gathered to hear eulogy from her long time friend and history professor wayne flint. the author of to kill a mockingbird died yesterday at 89.

two members of the nypd were shot after a wild police chase this morning through the streets of brooklyn. officers approached a man who they say pointed a gun at them and then drove off. more than 30 shots were fired at the officers who responded for backup. now investigators are trying to find out if the officers who were shot might have been hit by friendly fire. one who was shot, through his bullet-proof vest, other in the hip. chase ended when the suspect slammed in the patrol car. the officers opened fire and the suspect was hit the but we're told he is expected to fully recover. nearly five months after a man was shot and killed in south philadelphia, the killer remains on the the loose. the tonight victim's mother is speaking out after receiving a cryptic message from her late son, herees rick williams with tonight's crime fighters report. >> he was a family person, who joked around a lot so much a joker. >> reporter: smile crosses her feign when robin payne talks

about her son karen. >> he loved children. he was always about his friend and family. >> reporter: on monday september 14th, 2015, at about 10:30 p.m., police were called to the intersection of south 24th and montross street in south philadelphia. when they arrived, they found the 21 year-old lying in the street with several gunshot wound. >> i got a phone call that from my sister. she called me and said you must get to the hospital, karen is shot. >> reporter: he died at the hospital. >> i went to the emergency room, with all of the family was at and i started screaming, hollering saying someone need to start talking and tell who shot my son. >> reporter: witnesses told police that the shooter fled the scene on the bike. robin says that someone did tell her something else. >> i had one guy, i don't know him, i never seen him before, that told me he know who killed my son. but he to not tell me hot killer was.
