coworkers. three people were killed after the gunman left work suddenly then returned armed with an assault rifle and a handgun. tonight he's been identified as 38-year-old cedric ford. friday night the big story on "action news" is that deadly shooting spree in the midwest. >> the first shots were fired yesterday outside excel industries lawnmower parts plant in hesston kansas. ford shot 15 people outside and inside before he was shot and killed by a police officer. let's get the very latest live at the scene, abc's elizabeth hur in kansas for us with the very latest on this investigation. elizabeth. >> reporter: good evening to you. authorities say so far the motive appears to be domestic but their work here is continuing. we're told the fbi here is assisting talking to the injured victims for answers. one day after the latest mass shooting in this country left three dead and 14 injured, the sheriff in harvey county kansas says there's one reason

by the gun plan did not claim more victims. >> the only reason he stopped shooting is because that officer stopped the shooter. >> reporter: as many as 300 people were inside the excel industries factory when investigators say cedric ford began firing. >> gun was strapped to him. he was ready to go. >> reporter: ford had already shot and wounded three people before he entered the planter. the bloodshed ending with ford shot and killed in a gun battle with the first officer on the scene, the hesston police chief. >> that particular officer is a hero. >> reporter: ford's shooting rampage ranged across some 6 miles and three locations believed to be motivated after ford was served way restraining order at work just 90 minutes before the first shooting. >> really quiet. he really didn't say much. he just -- he didn't -- he didn't look happy. >> currently 11 of the 14 victim interviews have been conducted by the fbily remaining victims are not able

to be interviewed at this time. >> reporter: police say their investigation is continuing, this as president obama weighs in saying enough is enough. >> these sort of mass shootings are taking place. we cannot become numb to this. >> reporter: as for that restraining order, court documents reveal it was ford's ex-girlfriend seeking protection claiming ford once choked her until she couldn't breathe. elizabeth hur, abc news in kansas. back to you. >> thank you elizabeth. unfortunately we are hearing of another mass shooting. this one in washington state. details are just coming into our news room. they're very sketchy but we know already five people are dead, so two shootings now, that one in kansas, a new one just being reported in washington state and of course we'll have much more information for you just as soon as we learn it but another tragedy unfortunately. on the heels of yesterday's shooting "action news" is taking an in depth look at the fears that recent mass shootings have sparked in american households and tonight brian taff takes you inside a class growing in popularity.

these folks are being taught how to use a gun to fight and take down an active shooter. it is a special report you'll only see tonight on "action news" at 11:00 and our coverage of of the kansas shooting and the washington state shooting will continue online for you at 6abc.com. >> turning to politics now a major twist in the race for the white house tonight. new jersey governor chris christie has endorsed gop frontrunner donald trump. christie made the announcement today at a trump rally in texas. the governor said he and trump decided to keep the endorsement secret until today his announcement was greeted by thunderous applause from trump supporters. you'll hear more from christie on his decision to back the donald coming up a little bit later on "action news" at 5:30. >> police in delaware are looking for three teenagers who cost thousands of dollars in damage to several cars. officers say the teens slashed tires of 17 vehicles in new castle. it happened about 1:30 this morning in the area of west 11th and juniper streets. a new castle county police car

were you among those damaged much. anyone with information about the crime or the suspects please call police. >> fire officials are trying to figure out what sparked the flames that destroyed a popular restaurant in philadelphia's germantown neighborhood. the blaze broke out about 1 o'clock this morning at the house of jin on chelten avenue. where vernon odom is standing by live with the latest on the investigation. vernon. >> reporter: good evening, rick. the day long search for the cause of this fire has shut down now for the night. there have been no conclusions so far. investigators will return tomorrow to resume sifting through all the rubble you see there. the inferno lit up the overnight sky at a germantown landmark this kline known niece and japanese eatery caught fire sometime after midnight and it took firefighters more than an hour to get it under control. so intense was this blaze there was can't it cop spread to other businesses on this block but at sunup you could survey the damage from chopper6.

the building was scorched and gutted but no other buildings were damaged. >> i'm just glad that no one got hurt but it will be missed. it will be missed. it's a nice place. i've known the owners since i've been here. >> reporter: regular customers began to arrive only to learn of the huge fire that destroyed one of their favorite stops. this man is one of the house of jin's owners. he also owns the deli next do that escaped any known fire damage. >> it's a great loss. everybody comes here. they make -- everyone comes here. i can come here for lunch because i work right across the street so everybody is going to be really upset. >> reporter: late morning as the fire marshal launched his search for the cause, they sifted through the rubble, no conclusions expected today. monica, the fire marshal will be coming back here in the morning. police are closely watching his rubbled scene tonight. live in germantown, i'm vernon odom, channel6 "action news."

>> thank you vernon. philadelphia crews are stepping up their efforts to pick some water mains across the city and while the process means headaches for some people the water department is asking folks to be patient. "action news" reporter john rawlins live in the city's frankford section with that part of the story tonight. john, good evening. >> good evening, monica. water mains last for a long time but they don't last forever. the one being replaced along frankford avenue was installed 157 years ago before the civil war. as they ramp up their efforts to replace water mains the water department working on getting the word out to residents about when streets will be closed, when buses will be detoured and when trash is picked up. work started on the project along frankford avenue last monday. this wasn't supposed to begin until summer but after a series of water main breaks including one weeks ago the decision to put this on a fast track. the water department is stepping up the pace of replacements from one everyone

2582ers to. >> we've increased that to make it an everyone hundred year cycle. we were replacing approximately 20 miles of main per year and now we've increased that to 28 miles of main per year. >> reporter: living with major construction frustrating for resident jenny schultz. among the one thing she complains about food truck traffic. this is trash day and she said it was not picked up at its time. >> recycling comes fires and then the trash men usually can come right after that. >> reporter: did that happen. >> no. >> reporter: did you get the recycling. >> the recycling was picked up but the trash was not picked up. >> reporter: the water department says the contractor is working on the through traffic problem. as for the trash pickup. >> i see no reason why the trash will not be collected today and if it isn't we'll address that as quick eightly as possible. at j.j. w tire shop a different problem. customers can't get there because of the work. >> you can do anywhere between

20 to 30 cars a day. how many today. >> two. >> reporter: people can't get to you. >> no they cannot. streets are blocked on both ends. >> reporter: this can go on for a file. >> according to them they say two months. >> reporter: that could be tough if you have a tire shop and people can't get there between 7:00 a.m. in the morning and 4 o'clock in the afternoon. the water department said they would talk to the owner and see if they could work out some of that problem. in the meantime trash still not picked up so some sort of glitch there as well. live in frankford, john rawlins channel6 "action news." rick. >> thank you. road crews were busy filling some of the potholes that formed this winter in wilmington and the city is encouraging people to report popotholes to the public works department. >> time for a check of the "action news" traffic report tonight friday night. >> i saw you doing a little two-step out in the hallway.

>> so excited. you guys are, too and we all want to get home and we would love to do so in a timely fashion, right? that's not going to happen. on the schuylkill expressway westbound 51 minutes to get out of town this afternoon. that number should be 14 not 51 but westbound you're just crawling along from montgomery the whole way out to conshohocken. eastbound drive so that's a little better but still not great. stop and go from 202 into belmont again from the boulevard on into south street. we've had a bunch of accidents. the one in montgomery county township along horsham road cleared out. now there's one on the westbound side approaching stump road. springfield township still have that crash along bethlehem pike at springfield avenue. bensalem still have the one along bensalem road near gibson road by new king wok. in new castle, route nine at hill view avenue with plenty of slowing on the northbound side of 295 headed towards the delaware memorial bridge. we'll check it again.

democratic contests next tuesday than at any other point in the election. republicans and democrats in alabama arkansas georgia massachusetts minnesota oklahoma, tennessee, texas, vermont and virginia will be holding contests and republicans in alaska will also caucus. democrats in colorado will be caucusing. democrats in american many american samoa will also hold a contest. 661 republican delegates, 865 democratic delegates are what's up for grabs and by the way, there are no winner take all contests. and world news tonight with david muir will have much more on chris christie's endorsement of donald trump as well as the south carolina democratic primary and a look ahead to super tuesday. you can watch all of that following "action news" at 6:00. >> in other news tonight a man is accused of shooting and killing his brother in northeast philadelphia. it happened just after 11 o'clock last evening on the 3100 block of woodhaven road. the victim james stevens was shot in the chest. according to sources stevens was intoxicated and yelling at their mother. and when he didn't leave the

home police say his brother william shields shot him. stevens died several hours later at the hospital. shields is now charged with his murder. the red cross is helping care for nine people after a fire damaged their home in port richmond. it starter in the 6500 block of almond street. firefighters were able to get it under control just minutes after arriving. no one was injured in the fire. >> new jersey authorities are looking for the suspected drug deal here sold heroin to a person who later overdosed and died. evesham police are charging eric carmo in. a for strict liability for a drug induced death. that incident happened last october. under new jersey law anyone who sells drugs that later kill the user can can be held liable for their death. if you know where carmona is please call police. a driver remains in the hospital tonight because of this morning crash in bucks county. chopper6 over the i-95 southbound lanes near street road in bensalem. somehow the driver lost control and went into a ditch.

several other cars were involved but it's not clear if anyone else was hurt. >> unwanted cell phones are going to help survivors of domestic violence. since the first of the year employees at the pennsylvania convention center have donated their old cell phones to verizon's hope line program. the phones will be refurbished and given to local domestic violence centers. the phones were donated to women against abuse. >> they often come, they have to leave suddenly with a suitcase and for many these phones can be a lifeline. >> since the program started in 2001 more than 11 million cell phones have been collected nationwide. >> work set to begin soon on repairing more than a dozen elementary school playgrounds in mercer county new jersey. in september the hamilton school district closed the playground because of safety concerns. it found the equipment had cracks and loose bolts. district has agreed to pay more than $480,000 to repair

and upgrade the playgrounds. the interim superintendent hopes the playgrounds will be reopened by late spring. excitement filled the air at one charter school in southwest philadelphia today. children performed original works of poetry even gave speeches to honor african-american legends for black history month and katherine scott reports. >> reporter: maya angelou langston hughes, ruby bridges, nina simone. >> there are a billion boys and girls who are young gifted and black. and that's a fact. >> reporter: the words of prominent black artists scientists and historical figures rang out this morning. voiced through students at southwest leadership academy charter school in southwest philadelphia. >> i kept reading it until i memorized it. i practiced every day. >> i practiced really good and i'm just a little bit nervous. >> reporter: it's the annual oratorical contest. the grand final fee lee of the

sunshine is going to stick around and the temperatures are going to warm up. >> we like that. >> as we go into march. as we take a look at double scan live radar around the area we can notice not much going on. a lot of sunshine today and a few clouds passed by early on in the afternoon but overall a pretty nice end to the week but it was a little on that cold side. 41 degrees was the high temperature in philadelphia. so, a chilly finish to the work and school week. 6 degrees below normal and winds today gusting to 41 miles an hour in philadelphia. and those winds have eased some at the present time but it's still bringing in a chill. it feels like 27 in reading as well as wilmington, 24 in lancaster, 29 millville, 11 in the poconos and trenton just 28 degrees. as we look at satellite and radar, we see the clouds breaking apart along the midatlantic and the northeast and those clouds will continue to diminish and collapse during the overnight hours so it's clear, it's cold. those winds will ease. 20 to 25 for that overnight

low with winds out of the northwest between 10 and 20 miles an hour. so, it's still going the feel like the teens despite that those winds do calm a bit. as we look at your saturday, low pressure in eastern parts of canada near the hudson bay. that is really locking mechanism where there's some really arctic air to the north of that over the hudson bay, but for us lots of sun, a west-southwesterly wind still eight to 16 miles an hour. 46 degrees is your air temperature but it's going to feel a lot colder than that because of the wind so there's still a bit of a chill saturday. that arctic air is cut off from entering the lower 48. it kind of stops along the border and then it kind of ejects itself towards greenland while new low pressure comes in over the great lakes and that's going to send a southerly surge here. it is going to be a cool start on sun morning but a very nice afternoon with southwesterly winds we're going to move those temperatures up to 62 degrees. and the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast, tomorrow 46. it's sunny but it's still a

little chilly with a few afternoon clouds and then it is a gorgeous afternoon here on sunday. make sure you have some outdoor plans with those temperatures going well above average, into the lower 60's and then it stays very warm on monday, the last day of the month. maybe a sprinkle around with temperatures still at 62 and as we go into the month of march here, it comes in like a lamb on tuesday. sun, just a few clouds. your temperature topping off at 60 degrees, even those overnight lows staying pretty mild and then another pretty powerful system should cut across to our west on wednesday. some heavy rain at times, a thunderstorm is possible with a temperature of 55 degrees. and then behind that, it cools off a bit, back to normal on thursday. late in the day clouds start to build at 46 and then rain or snow he is possible here at the end of next week with temperatures coming in around 39 degrees, so overall some beautiful days ahead especially we have three days of 60 in a row as we end this month and go into the next.

nora, trump himself called this a shocker. what's the reaction there? >> reporter: oh, it's a stunner for sure, jim. now, we do know that governor christie had a secret meeting with donald trump in new york yesterday morning and then late yesterday afternoon he told just a handful of his staffers that he was getting on a plane and flying to texas to drop this political bombshell. >> i am proud to be here to endorse donald trump for president of united states. >> reporter: governor christie says he decided to endorse trump yesterday morning and offered his surprise backing at a news conference in texas. >> he is someone who is going the lead the republican party to victory in november over hillary clinton which is the single most important thing we can do. >> reporter: the reality tv star and businessman who has dominated the republican race for president was happy to accept his former rival's endorsement. >> this was an endorsement that really meant a lot. chris is an outstanding man. >> reporter: christie's endorsement comes despite swipes he took at trump before the governor dropped out of the race earlier this month. >> show time is over
