"action news" reporter trish

hartman is live at the scene with the full story, trish? >> reporter: well, walter demolition crews, have fenced off the property here and reid street is opened once again. it was closed earlier today. for the next few days crews will clear away what is left and sure up the structure next to the collapse. l and i tells us that building is vacant. officials are thankful this happened early in the morning and that more people were not injured. >> around 7:30 i heard a loud crack. almost the sound as if a tree was up rooting. >> reporter: then gregory cooper looked out of his grays ferry apartment window to see the house at 1401 south patton street collapse. >> i ran to the front of the building and asked if there was anybody in there. i heard a voice from the back of the house hollering help. >> reporter: police say that 39 year-old man who was on the third floor was the only person there, he was taken to the hospital, in stable condition, and treated for back pain. specially trained fire fighters rescued him from the pile of debris.

>> squad 47 is a special rescue apparatus and they have special tools and equipment. because they were equipped they were able to excavate, one person from the telling. >> reporter: a coordinating to the department of the licenses and inspections, the stand alone building had no violations, the cause of the collapse is still under investigation, but. >> we have had a lot of wind and severe weather. that is, that it makes the building more vulnerable. you cannot say this that was the cause but does not help. >> reporter: raymond white said he spoke to the man who lives here a few weeks ago about the deteriorating condition about the building. >> all over the wall it fell off. so you could see cobblestone, meaning that water could now seep in and that would cause structural damage. >> reporter: first floor was a barber shop. the sign still visible in the ruble. but neighbors say it has been closed for years. focus on the damage were shocked and thankful that the man who lives upstairs was not killed to know he is in stable condition, to know he is in the medical care and that it looks like he will survive, that brings some joy to my

heart. >> reporter: now, city has been investigating but officials say they may never know for sure what exactly what caused the who us to collapse. how how unusual this is, a full house collapse like this one happens once everyone or two years. we're live from grays ferry trish hartman for channel six "action news". >> thanks, trish. philadelphia police sergeant got banged up during an overnight crash in the wind field section. officer was responding to a called for backup at 3:00 a.m. when he lost control of his cruiser on park side and bryn mawr avenues and struck a pole. the officer was transported to penn presbyterian hospital where he was treated and released. septa officials are looking for this man whom they say stabbed a woman in the elevator of a septa station. it happened at 1:00 a.m. this morning at the huntingdon station of the marcus frankford el in kensington. investigators say suspect tried to rob a woman and stabbed her in the shoulder and knee. she was hospitalized but we're told she's expected to be just fine. if you have any information, please call the police.

a huge fire in lehigh county, destroyed several apartment buildings but amazingly everyone escaped okay. it happened at 3:00 a.m., on front street and catasauqua. there are retail spaces in the build bug they were vacant no word how the whole thing started. fire department here in philadelphia, teamed up with the american red cross today with the goal, of preventing fire-related deaths the in the city. they went door to door, and in the logan section getting out and installing smoke alarms free a charge. ongoing campaign played a role in reducing fire-related deaths by 63 percent last year. and a mother and her three children were rushed to the hospital today after being exposed to carbon monoxide from a heater inside of their home and then a family had just moved into that home this past week. the "action news" reporter jeff chirico is live on the the 100 block of east sharpknack street in germantown with the full story, jeff? >> reporter: walter, this could have ended very badly, fortunately this home is

equipped with a carbon monoxide detector which the mom says, saved their lives. >> it is hard to say because my kid are in here. my kid could have been dad what i would have did. >> reporter: she gets emotional as she talks about the carbon monoxide scare that forced her and her three children from their bed in the middle of the the night. >> i almost had a heart attack. i seen the ambulance. i panicked. >> reporter: family was awakened by co detector around 3:45 a.m. pgw crews found elevated levels of the dangerous gas in the home. she and her children's grandmother who had been spending time at the apartment said they both had been feeling ill before the alarm started but didn't know why. afterwards all were checked out at the hospital. >> elevated, in the babies room. the and, they gave them oxygen. >> reporter: pgw says a faulty heater toys blame, keith who had moved in the apartment earlier in the week said she had complained to manage. about the heater for days.
