"action news" reporter vernon odom is live at the vare recreation center tonight where ironically the community will hold a meeting on gun violence. vernon. >> reporter: good evening, jim. and the guest of honor tonight is his honor mayor jim can kenny. he'll be coming here with encouraging words to pass out to this community which many say is in crisis. this is surveillance video from last night's drive-by ambush of two grays ferry teens standing outside a takeout restaurant around 5:45. you see them frantically scrambling for cover. the barrage of gunfire came from this car. >> two of the guys come out of the chinese restaurant then was standing on the corner just talking and then next think you know a white car shot by and i heard gun slots so i went back in the house. when i came back out it was mayhem out here.

>> reporter: the suspects remain at large. the 15-year-old teens remain hospitalized in critical condition. the 17-year-old listed in stable condition. >> there's nothing for the kids to do but kill each other. there's nothing to do. in the summertime they will be on this corner all day long 'cause it's nothing for them to do. if they had programs for them, it would decrease all the violence. >> reporter: mayor kenney will be part of a town neating tonight with rest departments who know this violence will fester and grow unless this area gets a lot more attention from all levers of city government. >> pal center ready to go at 32nd and wharton. plans for senior square. councilman kenyatta johnson has plans ongoing at linear playground. we have a complex of athletic opportunities and after school opportunities for kids to stay out of trouble. >> reporter: and jim, police say tonight they need some help in their quest to solve

this rash of crimes here so they could use some some tip calls. live here in south philadelphia, the grays ferry section, i'm vernon odom channel6 "action news. ly. >> vernon thank you. the philadelphia department of public health has confirmed the first case of zika virus in a city resident. officials say the woman is over the age of 60 and recently returned from the caribbean. the woman was not hospitalized and she is getting better. also today the cdc confirmed the second travel-related zika case in new jersey. zika is most commonly transmitted by mosquitos. fatalities are rare but the infection can cause serious birth defects. a south jersey mother has admitted to killing her newborn daughter. hyphernkemberly dorvilier pleaded guilty to aggravated manslaughter this morning. police say the 23-year-old doused the baby with accelerant before setting the child on fire in january of

last year. dorvilier was charged with murder but struck a plea deal for a lesser charge. she faces 30 years in prison. police in hockessin delaware are trying to track down a hit and run driver who killed a man last night. "action news" reporter john rawlins is live on lancaster pike with the full story on that. john. >> reporter: hi, jim. a tough one for investigators at this point. they know the victim, a pedestrian was likely hit by a car going northbound on this road, that would be going away from us at this point in time but no witnesses have surfaced. there are no video that has surfaced yet and at this point they're not sure about the make and model of the vehicle so the victim's family speaking out for anyone to come forward who might be able to shed light on this situation. >> contact the delaware state police and turn themselves in. >> reporter: because? >> its a bad thing.

a real bad thing. >> reporter: the real bad thing jerry mccarthy is talking about the hit and run death of his 34-year-old son jerry last night. it appears the younger mccarthy was hit with tremendous force, a shoe and hat were found more than a hundred feet from the spot where his body was discovered along the shoulder of the road. mccarthy was a carpenter. his long time partner says he doted on his two young kids. >> law a really great father. he loved to play like a -- with his sons, cuddle in bed all of us and watch movies at night. >> reporter: mccarthy's body was found about 9:30 last night along busy delaware high one from unin hockessin just below the pennsylvania state line his father said had been at this nearby v.f.w. he was he says the staff told him his son didn't have enough money for a drink. he apparently told the bartend he would be back in 20 minutes and as to what occurred next police say they have little information. >> we look for anybody who did witness anything or maybe have seen a vehicle that may have

cemetery after she didn't know the code to the store safe. basil about wha buoy was senten5 years behind bars and sal dean shah heed was also sentenced. >> reporter: investigator its say 18-year-old jacob francisco is a senior at bensalem high school manufactured and sold pot brownies but when they got in the hands of upwards of a dozen shafer middle school students, police were notified. >> there's no doubt that fed customers in the elementary school he would have sold to elementary school kids. this is the type of individual we don't need on our streets. >> reporter: director of public safety says francisco sold the drugs to a middle school student who in turn dealt the pot bonnies to the

seventh graders. when the students ingested the drugs other students told teachers. >> he's got about a dozen and a half customers that he regularly sells to. and he was selling them to kids in the middle school. >> reporter: the search of francisco's home turned up drugs and cooking supplies for the brownies. he says pot brownies can be extremely dangerous because some dealers lace them with synthetic marijuana and other chemicals that can cause hallucinations. >> they can be ingesting something in their body that could kill them when they think they're taking pot francisco is charged with corruption of minors and other related charges. at juvenile will likely be charged according to police. his name is not being released because of his age. as for all of the parents of those seventh graders who took the drugs police say they're cooperating fully with the investigation. in bensalem chad pradelli, channel6 "action news. >> new jersey governor chris christie is trying again to fill a longstanding vacancy on

the state supreme court. this afternoon christie nominated superior court judge david baumann. christie nominated because plan in 2012 but baumann wasn't given a confirmation hearing. mary katherine cuff temporarily filled the vacancy. if baumann is approved, the makeup of the court would be four republicans, two democrats and one independent. jim kenney wants a soda tax a proposed tax on sugary drinks would be included when mayor kenney lays out his new budget later this week. ken flea is seeking a three-cent tax to raise $400 million over the next five years. it would expand universal prek pay off debts needed to invest in parks and recreation centers and finance a green jobs initiative. the beverage industry and unions vow to fight the tax. coming up on "action news" tonight, 100 years old or 25? we'll meet the south jersey

morning in atlantic city. didn't turn out to that way. workers constructing a new section of boardwalk thought they had come across dynamite in some rock at the site. investigators determined the wires were not explosive, rather wires left over from the quarry where the rocks came from. more than two dozen high school students spent this day roaming around philadelphia city hall. they had the opportunity to observe and learn from mayor jim kenney and other public officials. this was the 46th annual police athletic league day at city hall. 6abc president and general manager bernie prazenica was on hand as officials offered words of wisdom to these youngsters. >> ♪ today is leap day which we are sure you know. of course leap day comes around only once every four years. so what happens if february 29th happens to be your birthday? how old are you really? new jersey correspondent nora muchanic has the case in pointer. >> katherine marshall was born

two and number three of 16 and in fact, this meteorological winter will go down as the third warmest in history and even this evening it's pretty mild out there. 54 degrees in philadelphia. in atlantic city it's 56. trenton 51. little bit cooler in the northern suburbs. reading 47. allentown 49. and wilmington currently 54 degrees. satellite6 along with action radar showing that we did have a gloomy start to the day. a weak cold front moved through and that brought us a round of showers but it moved off quickly. sunshine this afternoon, temperatures in the 60's but despite that cold front and tonight's going to be a pretty quiet night. clear skies for the most part a-few clouds late tonight and temperatures a tad above normal, 39 degrees philadelphia, 32 in allentown, 37 in wilmington and 40 for the boardwalk in atlantic city. and the first day of march is going to be beautiful. in like a lamb. loads of sunshine and with this warm front working up to the north temperatures running about 12 degrees above

average. not quite as warm as today but a high of 60 degrees and that cold front will move through late on tuesday night and early wednesday morning so future tracker showing that we will get a round of rain with this but most of it will occur when we're all sleeping. future tracker showing 12 o'clock, this is midnight tuesday night we will see some showers developing in there northern suburbs and then the wee hours of the morning right before dawn we could even get a squall line of some gusty thunderstorms but this moves off very quickly. by 8 o'clock, nothing more than a few showers, about a quarter to a half inch of rain and then behind this system on wednesday, high pressure's building in so this brings us a wind tunnel effect. our high of 49 will probably hit that mid morning, the temperatures dropping down into the low 40's late in the afternoon and it's going to feel a little bit on the chilly side with wind gusts up to about 40 miles per hour and then temperatures really drop on thursday and friday. so, the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast, beautiful start to the month of march. in like a lamb with a high of
