at these three tornadoes reported tearing through the south. now the storm hits the northeast bringing snow and rain to the coast. millions facing a messy commute this morning. >> breaking overnight, rocket man returns. astronaut scott kelly back on earth after an epic 340 days in space. the moment he emerged victorious from this capsule and how all that time out of this world may do some good here on earth. >> we do say good morning, america. huge wins overnight for both hillary clinton and donald trump. the two front-runners each winning seven states on super tuesday. >> donald trump claims victory all over the map. all the way from arkansas to massachusetts and also got support from all kinds of gop voters, but his success now threatens to split that party as democrats begin to unify behind hillary clinton, her seven wins over bernie sanders included a giant victory in texas.

she built up a big lead in that all-important race for the convention. this could set up an epic battle by november. >> it could. our team covering every angle. we begin with abc's tom llamas outside of trump tower here in new york. good morning, tom. >> reporter: robin, good morning to you. such an incredible night, not exactly a trump tidal wave but the rookie politician winning a majority of the states last night, this as more and more in the gop are saying if someone is going to beat trump, other candidates need to drop out. overnight, donald trump going from being the front-runner to appearing unstoppable. >> this isn't like it's a close match. i mean it's only too bad that winner didn't take all because if winner took all this thing is over. we're just having a celebration. >> trump soaking up huge super tuesday wins all over the map. his victory party in a familiar place, a room filled with cameras and reporters beaming

out live from his florida mar-a-lago resort. >> we've done something that almost nobody thought could be done and i'm very proud of it. i am a unifier. >> trump introduced by husband new super fan, new jersey governor chris christie. the internet exploding with the new political tag team. >> the american people are listening to him and he is bringing the country together. that, ladies and gentlemen, is not a campaign, it's a movement. >> reporter: trump so confident he would win, he didn't spend any part of super tuesday in a super tuesday state. but he took almost every one of them. record turnout in virginia, so many voters there that one county ran out of ballots. >> we have expanded the republican party. >> reporter: but not all republicans want trump as their candidate. new money and staffing going into an anti-trump super pac that's even hired jeb bush's former communications director to stop trump. and in texas and oklahoma voters supported senator ted cruz over trump.

cruz speaking to george after his win. >> well, george, tonight was a terrific night. we had major victories in texas, which as you know is the crown jewel of super tuesday, the most delegates of any one state. a lot of republicans view it if we nominate donald trump it'll be a disaster for republicans and a disaster for the country and what i think we saw tonight and what i hope we'll see in the days to come is republicans unifying and coming together. >> reporter: senator rubio with a desperately needed victory in minnesota, saying he will stop trump in florida. rubio's home state. >> two weeks from tonight, right here in florida, we are going to send a message loud and clear. that the party of lincoln and reagan and the presidency of the united states will never be held by a con artist. >> reporter: now senator rubio and governor kasich both campaigning in michigan. cruz campaigning in kansas and a big winner, donald trump, taking the day off.

tomorrow a big gop debate. it'll be the first time trump and fox news' megyn kelly face off on a debate stage again. george and robin. >> high stakes at that one, as well. >> right. >> we move on to the democrats. they are rallying behind hillary clinton after she sweeps through super tuesday with wins in seven states. that could mean the beginning of the end for the bernie sanders' crusade and abc's cecilia vega is at clinton headquarters in brooklyn with the latest. good morning, cecilia. >> reporter: george, good morning to you. there is celebrating this morning inside the clinton campaign as hillary clinton takes one step closer to securing this nomination, but for bernie sanders, while his chances now look weaker, he remains defiant. for hillary clinton it truly was a super tuesday. >> thank you all so much. >> reporter: overnight the democratic front-runner declaring victory with big wins in several delegate rich states. >> we have to make america whole. we have to fill in. [ cheers and applause ] fill in what's been hollowed

out. >> all: usa, usa. >> reporter: clinton also not so subtly taking aim at gop front-runner donald trump. >> now, it might be unusual as i've said before for a presidential candidate to say this, but i'm going to keep saying it, i believe what we need in america today is more love and kindness. instead of building walls, we're going to break down barriers. >> reporter: her democratic opponent he can choing those sentiments. >> when we bring our people together, when we do not allow the donald trumps of the world to divide us up. >> reporter: bernie sanders feeling as confident as ever in his home state of vermont winning there by a landslide. >> it is good to be home. future of his campaign. >> you're going to see a lot of election results come in. these are not -- this is not a general election. it's not winner take all. >> reporter: now, hillary clinton's team is not ready to say this outright -- this nomination is theirs outright for the taking they do believe they could have it locked up by mid-march but here's the thing, bernie sanders' camp agrees with that timetable. they think that's when he'll have this nomination locked up, robin. >> all right, cecilia, thank you. abc's jon karl is here now with more on where things stand for both the republicans and democrats after super tuesday and, jon, let's start with donald trump. where does he stand as far as winning the nomination? how far? >> reporter: well, robin, it's not over yet but well on his way to clinching the nomination. tension states compared to four for ted cruz. one for marco rubio. of course, what really matters is delegates and here's where that stands, donald trump, 279

delegates, much more than ted cruz or marco rubio and a lot more delegates still to be allocated based on last night's voting. even when that is over, he needs 1,237 to win. he has to get to all the way there. the accounting from last night he'll be less than a third of what he needs to clinch which makes the next two weeks crucial. look at the states voting over the next two weeks, florida, winner take all, the biggest prize, ohio, winner take all. big contest in michigan, in illinois. now, if donald trump can sweep those states, robin, it's over. he will have gotten -- he will have guaranteed he'll have the nomination. >> a lot can happen over the next two weeks. as far as hillary clinton is concerned what is her path? >> reporter: well, hillary clinton looks a lot like donald trump except stronger. look at the states she's won. twice as many as bernie sanders. but, again, it comes down to delegates and hillary clinton's delegate lead is much bigger than donald trump's. she already has a thousand delegates compared to only 376

for bernie sanders. they need more on the democratic side but she is about 40% of the way to clinching the nomination. >> all right, jon, thanks very much. george. >> okay, robin. jon will join us here with matthew dowd, donna brazile and let's begin with donald trump. you got to take a breath here, matthew dowd, and donald trump said it himself right there. he said not many predicted he would get here right now. he is just about to complete a hostile takeover of the republican party. >> it's absolutely a hostile takeover. it is not only did people say he wouldn't win any primaries or caucuses he's won ten of them and one of the things i was struck about as we watch that, every single person last night in their victory speech was talking about donald trump including donald trump and this is still a race that's being defined in many ways on both sides by donald trump. >> that's right and meanwhile, jon karl, you were alluding to it right there, the fact all of his opposition stays in last night despite the fact he wins in seven states gives him a much more clearer path going forward. >> he wins twice, by getting all

east delegates but guaranteeing the opposition remains divided. now, george, it really looks like and the others will acknowledge this to you privately their only hope of stopping donald trump is making sure he doesn't get a majority into the convention, in other words, trying to defeat him through a contested convention, something we haven't seen in a long time and would be a very steep climb. >> that would definitely split the republican party. meanwhile, donna brazile, as i was saying earlier, democrats appear to be now unifying behind hillary clinton. >> of course, the democratic party will come together but this is going to be a race that will probably go till june. bernie sanders has not just money, but he has a message that resonates with a vast majority of democrats. hillary will begin to consolidate huge states like ohio, like illinois, like michigan but bernie sanders will be able to pick up states like kansas and nebraska so this movement will go toward june. >> it already has people talking about the potential matchup between donald trump and hillary clinton in the fall and some

democrats say, oh, no, this will be easy. he'll mobilize latinos and african-americ african-americans. others say, no, he'll open up places like ohio, michigan to the republicans. >> i don't think this is a slafk dunk. so many said don't nom date donald trump because he's get beaten badly. both parties are go to nominate very flawed candidates who are going to go against each other in a titanic race of outsider, ultimate insider. >> democrats gearing up, donna brazile. >> no question that donald trump will pose a threat to the republicans but i think he has to win the civil war before he can face a challenger who can build a fire wall with minorities and women and that's the key to winning this. >> one more beat on that scene last night. donald trump didn't have a victory rally last night. had a press conference with chris christie right behind him which did set as tom llamas said the internet on fire. >> it looked to me like chris christie was the sleeper agent

in "manchurian candidate." you don't want to show him the queen of diamonds. >> looking for the door. he needs an exit training from the donald trump campaign. >> i don't know. we'll see. thank you all very much. let's go to robin. >> thank you. late night for you and our team. now to that severe weather overnight affecting voters across the south. at least three reported tornadoes tearing through alabama. abc's steve osunsami is on the ground there in bessemer with the latest. good morning, steve. >> reporter: good morning to you, robin. it got so frightening here last night at nearby polling places they had to stop the voting until the storm passed and here's why. take a look. the winds were strong enough to knock off a section of this home and send pieces of the roof into the neighbor's yard. just after supper whatting looked like a tornado struck families south of birmingham. >> happened mighty quick when you don't have much time to think. >> reporter: at least four were

seriously hurt and the winds were well over 60 miles an hour. more than a dozen hopes badly damaged. >> it was just so shocked at what had happened. >> reporter: the high winds knocked this steeple right off this church. power crews had to work through the night. here's the same storm system in nebraska monday. this strong microburst created blinding conditions that forced drivers off the road. in the midwest it's heavy snowfall leading to one wreck after another. police in wisconsin alone have seen nearly 100 accidents. they're slipping and sliding in michigan too. at chicago o'hare they're sliding off the runways, a private jet slipped in the snow and an american airlines jet slid while taxiing. it had to be towed back to the terminal. here in alabama, authorities overnight were going door to door checking on families. this morning, everyone is accounted for. robin. >> that's great news. steve, thank you. we turn to amy with the

morning's other top headlines starting with a train derailment overnight. >> that's right, robin. dozens of hopes evacuated after a freight train carrying hazardous liquids derailed south of buffalo, new york, along lake erie. 15 cars came off the track and one was leaking ethanol which is highly volatile. that leak is now contained. there were no immediate records of injuries. and a developing story out of iraq right now. "the new york times" reporting that u.s. special operations forces have captured an isis operative who is described as a significant figure in the organization. he is reportedly being questioned at a temporary detention facility. overnight apple filed a formal appeal protesting a court order to unlock the san bernardino shooter's iphone. on capitol hill tuesday fbi director james comey admitted agents made a mistake when they tried to reset the password for syed farook's icloud which locked them out of the account. unclear if apple's appeal will delay a court hearing on the issue set for march 2nd. meanwhile, a senior executive at facebook has been

about this. how is she doing, erin andrews, on the stand. >> i think she's doing very well. she has to prove to the jury that she's suffering from severe and permanent emotional distress so she has to explain to the jury that this has had an extreme effect upon her and she is, i think, exhibiting that on the witness stand. the question in my mind is will the jury sympathize with her? will they relate to that story but she's sort of, i think, explaining every woman's nightmare. we have anxiety dreams where we show up naked. she is saying everyone has seen her naked and will continue to see her naked. i think that could resonate with some of the jurors. >> in the cross-examination they went after her hard saying, hey, this has not hurt you. how do you think that's going to play with the jair. >> i think that's a really important part of it because she has to prove that has affected her earnings. the bottom line is many people believe that she has been more successful after the leaking of

the video. >> should that matter at all. >> it will matter. i do believe it will matter and, remember, we are sort of in this, you know, post-kim kardashian world where you do become famous sometimes because of leaked. >> reporter:s and so i wonder if the jurors will think, well, you've become more famous because of this. how has this really injured you? and that is a question that many, many people have. >> i know you're doing a lot of talking down there and you have an idea about the makeup of the jury which could go a long way in deciding the case. >> is this generational? will there be younger people on the jury that don't empathize with her. >> let me add my welcome to abc -- i should say welcome back to abc. >> thank you so much, robin. >> thanks, guys. we move on to new developments in that wild car chase in southern california where a man kidnapped his ex-girlfriend and their two kids, took them on a scary ride but didn't get far before police tracked him down and secured him after a standoff. abc's kayna whitworth has the details. >> reporter: this morning, fugitive thomas ueno behind bars

spending nearly two days on the run leading officers on a bizarre chase and standoff in southern california. the chase putting local neighborhoods on high alert. >> it's very unsettling. we don't have anything like this really happening. >> reporter: police say the 35-year-old violated a restraining order and was holding his former girlfriend and their two young boys inside this vehicle. the suv weaving slowly through traffic for more than two hours across three major highways, finally coming to a stop but the standoff not over. ueno talking to negotiators on his cell phone getting in and out of the vehicle several times sometimes with the children. then nearly six hours after the ordeal began as police close in, ueno makes a break for it. police firing nonlethal rounds. >> all of a sudden seven or eight shots ring out and the suspect in a hoodie comes running up towards me and says

southeast. at least three reported towards tearing through alabama seriously injuring at least four people. winds topping 60 miles an hour damaged more than a dozen homes tearing the steeple off a church. conditions were so bad super tuesday voting was briefly halted in some areas. well, a developing story overseas right now, investigators are trying to determine if a piece of debris found along the coast of africa is from malaysia airlines flight 370. that flight disappeared from the radar two years ago with 239 people on board. the search for the wreckage continues in the indian ocean. the new debris was found off the coast of mozambique. there had no confirmation yet that it is from that plane, last summer a piece of the wing was found in the same area of the indian ocean. well, overnight astronaut scott kelly returned to earth after 340 days in space. he gave a thumbs up after landing in kazakhstan. he will be reunited with his family late tonight in houston. that's a double thumbs up. a high school teacher in

south carolina is fighting to get her job back after a student stole her cell phone and shared a semi nude photo of her with the class. leann arthur said the school district forced her to resign and blamed her for leaving the phone unlocked on her desk. the photo was also posted on social media. the student has not been disciplined. well, there is new proof that genes may be as much to blame for gray hair as your age. researchers have isolated a gene that appears to contribute to the cellular process that gad wally causes the loss of pigment that gives hair its color. scientists say the silver lining there is that this could one day help them develop a drug to prevent gray hair. if you shop at whole foods you may have some contaminated cheese in your refrigerator. whole foods is recalling maytag bleu cheese after listeria was found in some samples. so far no illnesses have been reported. a record setting delivery

can taste that. >> it looks like that? it looks like that. >> and tastes really good. >> what do we have next. >> brussels sprouts with almonds and the secret to this is after we saute the brussels sprouts we add the almonds, here it is right here. watch this. ah, yeah. maple syrup. >> maple syrup? >> pure maple syrup. >> i would have never come up with that. >> we'll drizzle a little of that and you can taste that just right there. >> okay. >> so then we have brussels sprouts, almonds, isn't that awesome. >> whoa. you know what you're doing, man. >> yeah, i mean, okay, so now twice baked potatoes, a great side dish, take it out and now we'll take the potato and add a little cheese, scallion, salt, pepper. we mix all of that in. >> get some butter. >> got to have butter. >> got to have butter. >> butter makes the world go round. >> so we do all that and stuff it back into the potato, pop it

northbound at 295 just cleared. we can see traffic is looking better but check out the overall travel time. 54 minute ride from the a.c. expressway to the walt whitman bridge. because of the huge jam we saw relating to that accident. it just cleared. lanes back opened and so i think that travel time is going to ease a little bit. another multi vehicle accident on the northeast extension southbound past lansdale. speeds of 28 miles an hour here and another accident on sumneytown pike at green lane. meanwhile checking the schuylkill expressway, we've got slow traffic. that's your westbound traffic. here's your eastbound. you can see eastbound a 24 minute ride from the blue route to the vine. no accidents currently on the schuylkill. but here's a problem here, street road right now is blocked and this is at second street pike. stick to county line road as your alternate its a problem way pole, tam. >> thank you, karen. now let's get a final look at accuweather and go over to dave murphy. good morning. >> tam, when we went on the air at 4:30 this morning it was 57 degrees in philadelphia. now take a look, down to 43. cold air has really started to rifle in. down into the 30's in allentown reading and lancaster and there's a strong
