>> reporter: authorities announce today that three senior football players at conestoga high school had been charged with assaulting a freshman on what the team called no gay thursdays. >> what this tradition was, was things that the football team considered would normally be considered gay were not considered gay on thursdays. >> reporter: authorities say this tradition started by the conestoga football team had been going on for three or four years. on october 15 of last year they say a 14-year-old freshman player was violently assaulted. >> three seniors holding down a freshman and violating him with a broomstick. >> reporter: d.a. tom hogan says one of those charged in the alleged assault is a captain of the football team he says the atmosphere was so bad on thursdays that some players quit the team. >> a lack of supervision here is the fact that all of this happened under the noses of the coaching staff because they were not there to supervise. >> reporter: meanwhile many of the students were having a

hard time believing any of this. >> i don't know what went on inside the locker room but these are some of my best friends and they love each other and i can't imagine them doing things like this to each other. >> the traditions of the team are just now obliterated. i guess anything that anybody ever wanted to say about conestoga football as a great team is now kind of blown away by this. >> reporter: in a statement superintendent richard gusix says the head football coach has been suspended from all coaching responsibilities pending the outcome of a school investigation. we're live here at conestoga high school, i'm dann cuellar channel6 "action news." monica. >> thank you dann. new at 5:00 from our new jersey news room this woman, six-year-old saundra stein from linwood atlantic county will spend 10 years in prison for her role in a fraud scheme. stein was accused of working with her sister and a lawyer to steal millions of dollars from clients of an in home senior care company.

stein pleaded guilty last month. >> in the last 90 minutes philadelphia police announced a person of interest after a restaurant employee was found at work with her throat slashed. officials say they're looking for her coworker police were called to the scene on washington avenue in south philadelphia at about 9 o'clock last night. and that's where "action news" reporter trish hartman is live tonight with the latest. trish. >> reporter: well, rick, police say the victim of this stabbing 54-year-old thuong nguyen was killed while diners were enjoying a meal upstairs. now police are searching for a person of interest who they say was also working in the kitchen. philadelphia police are looking for this man who goes by the name noelle. they say he's 25 to 30 years old, drivers a white suv and was working in the kitchen with thuong nguyen just before she was killed. all day people stopped by lee's cafe and bistro on washington avenue only to find it closed. many of them still trying to

process what happened last night at the vietnamese and chinese restaurant. >> i was shocked. and as a matter of fact i was going to come here today. >> the fact that she was such a nice person. it's sad. >> the vietnamese community here is really south especially in south philadelphia. word gets around quickly. >> reporter: police officers say they were flagged down by the owners of the cafe just after 9 p.m. and found the victim with her throat slashed in the basement kitchen detectives say nguyen had been preparing food with noelle and when orders stopped showing up the owner went downstairs to check on them. >> obvious signs of a violent struggle cause pieces of the equipment kitchen equipment were actually knocked over, piece of the equipment was actually laying on her body. >> reporter: now police are looking for noelle and a sign hangs on the door saying the cafe is closed for renovations. on emily street point breeze nguyen's say she lived here with two sons and worked a lot. >> we used to see her on saturday mornings going to the laundromat. this is really like a shock.

flower show tonight with the first look at the fork and i'm sure you're surrounded by beauty. here too as well. >> thanks, rick. >> i was talking about me actually. >> reporter: it's not only -- i know rick you're surrounded by beauty with monica sitting next to you. but here we do have a beautiful sight and it smells good in here. i love coming to the philadelphia flower show every year. when you're here you realize that spring is officially right around the corner although this morning we did have what should be our last taste of winter. satellite6 along with action radar showing that storm system that rolled through early this morning, it's really intensifying but it has moved off the coast so we do have some gusty winds along the shore but that is pulling out but it did leave a bit of a mark in the form of some generally light snow in most of our viewing area. philadelphia points nine of an inch of snow, wilmington 1.7, lindenwold new jersey 2.7, wayne 1.2, cape may 6 and half inches of snow. a lot of people call this

onion snow because that accumulation was on grassy surfaces most of the roads wet. my kids were disappointed to go to school on time this morning. right now temps in the 30's and low 40's. 40 degrees in philadelphia, official high 41. allentown 39, millville 36. wilmington 40 and wildwood currently 34 degrees. what's ahead? well, the weekend will be seasonable. looking at a possibility of some snow or rain showers sunday morning and then get ready for spring next week. temperatures will be soaring into the 70's but if you want to get a taste of spring before that stay tuned to our special on the flower show tomorrow night at 7:00 it's called explore america and really it explores more than a hundred national parks. we have something like this. this exhibit from shafer designs this is with an sell adams. these flowers look like a water few. i will have another look at the philadelphia flower show coming up in just a few minutes.

>> a missouri state trooper rescued a woman seconds before her car went up in that flames. check it out. dashcam captured the dramatic moments when a driver fleeing police hit another car. now, both vehicles spun out of control. gas was also spewing from the ruptured gas tank of the victim's car. the 60-year-old female driver couldn't get out because she had suffered several broken bones. doctors expect her to make a full recovery. the driver who caused the some he is is facing several charges. the labor department's latest jobs report shows february was another solid

month of hiring. u.s. employers added more than 240,000 workers last month. the government says retailers restaurants healthcare providers and construction companies drove that. the unemployment rate stayed about the same though at 4.9 percent. and that news sparked a rally to the end of the week on wall street. the dow closed up 56 points, the nasdaq up 10, the s & p 500 gaining seven. >> pennsylvania governor tom wolf continued his statewide jobs tour with a stop in south philadelphia this morning. he visited the headquarters of urban outfitters at the naval yard. wolf took time to visit with employees and says he was happy to hear the clothing company is expanding its headquarters. this was governor wolf's first public appearance since announcing his treatable cancer diagnosis. he says he's feeling fine. >> u.s. congressman john louis was in delaware today to share words of wisdom about civil rights. >> we were taught the way of peace, the way of love.

take a look at temperatures across the region currently. philadelphia at 40 degrees, our high today only 41 degrees. allentown and trenton 39 and millville currently 34 degrees. now, satellite6 along with action radar showing that storm system that brought us the touch of snow early this morning is pulling away. if you look just to the west of chicago, you can see a little bit on the radar there. that is from our next clipper and that's what's going to be moving through late tomorrow night early on sunday. so, tonight for your friday night really no weather problems. it is going to be a cool night, clearing skies overnight low 22 degrees in the suburbs, 27 degrees for center city, so definitely on the chilly side and then future tracker showing we start the day tomorrow with some sunshine. temperatures will be on the cool side at 9 o'clock about 33 degrees in philadelphia but look at what happens as we head through the day. the clouds really fill in. it will be seasonably cool with a temperature of 44 degrees at 4 o'clock and then heading into sunday, this

is when that clipper moves through and that will bring us a touch of some snow showers primarily north and west of i-95, rain showers south and east so temperatures really play a big role in this. temperatures below freezing in allentown, but even this system is not going the leave much be maybe a grassy coating and then into the afternoon temperatures back up into the upper 40's, but it's going to be a little bit unsettled with lots of clouds, with maybe a lingering sprinkle or two. so, the accuweather five day forecast showing the weekend lots of clouds, temperatures about where we should be for this time of the year, 45 degrees tomorrow t the best chance of seeing some sunshine will be early in the day on sunday. this is when we have some snow showers north and west of i-95, some rain showers in the morning south and east with a high of 48 degrees. but look at what happens as we head into next week. monday 60 degrees with filtered sunshine. you want it warmer than that? you've got it. on tuesday our first day of temperatures in the 70's this year.

70 degrees and wednesday even warmer looking at record warmth with a high up to 74 degrees. so, next week you may want to get outside and think about gardening and if you do want to get inspired a great place to go is here at the philadelphia flower show. i want to show you this. this was really inspired by hawaii's volcano national park and these are orchid gardens and you can see right now all the colors. this really shows how in hawaii you get these orchid gardens these lush gardens that emerge from the molten lava and it shows you the beauty and it really shows you the danger of the big island and the nice thing about it you don't need to book a flight a-plane trip to hawaii you can just come down here to the pennsylvania convention center. it's really nice out here. we have the black tie preview coming up. i'm going change into my dress and be back on at 6 o'clock. >> can can't wait to see you. we'll see you. thank you cecily. >> thanks cecily.

lauren. >> reporter: rick, it was also more than 20 years ago that the o.j. simpson trial captivated nation. the weapon used in the killing of his ex-wife and friend still remains a mystery to this day. now, something new emerging. essentially what the lapd told us out here today was that there is a knife that was found, possibly in 1998 around the time that simpson's brentwood home was demolished. allegedly it was either a retired or off duty police officer working on a movie that discovered the knife from a construction worker claiming it was from the property. the police very much emphasizing that they do in the know yet if this is real, if this is a hoax. they are examining the knife for all forensics including dna evidence and they are vetting this story to see whether or not it checks out. >> all right, lauren thank

you. keep us posted as the investigation continues in california tonight. in other news a jury could soon begin deliberating whether two hotel companies and a stalker should be forced to pay sportscaster erin andrews millions of. closing arguments in taking place today. andrews filed a $75 million lawsuit after secretlily recorded videos were taken of her back in 2008. the convicted stalker admitted to altering the peep holes on hotel room doors and recording nude videos of her. those videos were then posted on the internet. >> from our delaware news room police have arrested a 19-year-old in connection with the fatal shooting of a man in wilmington. police arrested adam jab blonsky and charged him with criminally negligent homicide. the shooting happened february 26 in the 1000 block of pine street. officers were called to the home they found bic victim with a gunshot wound to the chest. no word tonight on a possible motive.

friends family and fellow officers gathered this morning to remember a fallen atlantic city police officer. they held a memorial at saint nicholas church to honor officer thomas mcmeekin jr. he died when he was hit by a bus while directing traffic around an accident scene. >> saint christopher's hospital for children continued its celebration of its 140th anniversary today. the hospital surgeon in chief dr. marshall schwartz talked to the staff about the medical firsts that happened at the hospital. some of those accomplishments include the delaware valley's first pediatric kidney transplant as well as the first pediatric heart and liver transplant. saint christopher's first opened its doors back in 1875. >> it is a hazard to both humans and wildlife. abandoned crab spots left at the bottom of bays throughout the jersey shore. now a huge effort is under way to fish them out but it's more than just about cleanup. the goal is to actually turn

these rusty old eyesores into energy. new jersey correspondent nora muchanic with that story tonight. >> reporter: the fishermen on this boat are pulling in a different kind of catch. rusty old crab pots from the bottom of the barnegat bay. the traps create a navigation hazard in the water an threat to wildlife. >> can be a huge hazard. many animals can be caught and die in these abandoned crab pots. >> reporter: and so with a grant from noaa they're using local fishermen to receive 26,000 pounds of crab pots and abandoned marine debris from brick down to stamped it's believed there's more than a thousand pots out there. >> there's a lot of traps out there. they found a lot. they've scanned a lot. mostly it's recreational traps that we find. some of them do have commercial tags in them. >> after super storm sandy one fisherman lost 400 pots. >> reporter: retrieval boats move from dot to dot on the sonar screen.

the mapping was done by stockton university. >> we're going to look for images that have shadows that are box-like and that would be a probable crab pot. >> reporter: the old pots will be collected at this bin at spencer's marina. as part of a program called fishing for energy a company from central jersey will burn the traps and gear to produce electricity. since the program began back in 2008 it's hauled in over 3 million pounds of old fishing gear stuff that would have been left in the water or in a boatyard somewhere. >> it provides the commercial fishermen with a place to dispose of the derelict gear at no cost to them. >> reporter: in addition to the bin here there are also ones in manahawkin barnegat light and mantoloking. the hope is within two years when you drop your line in the bay you'll come up with crabs or fish and not some crusty old crab pot. in waretown, nora muchanic channel6 "action news." >> septa made a big announcement today for commuters in the north philadelphia area. a popular bus line is

expanding. septa officials held a press conference announcing that the route 53 bus will run for an extra two and a half miles. that's 30 extra stops on east hunting park avenue across three neighborhoods. officials say it will serve 90,000 customers. >> all right, time to get of traffic out there right now friday night. >> for that we go to matt pelman in the "action news" traffic center with an upday. hey, matt. >> whole lot drier than it was this morning. friday afternoon we're feeling good rick and monica until we hit these delays like the one on 95 southbound. not helped out by this fender-bender here in the southbound construction zone by cottman. it's off to the side but it has been attracting attention as you come down from academy and head towards that sixers game in south philadelphia this evening. also our normal afternoon delays on all the suburban routes like this 1202 southbound side backing up from 29 on down to the work zone there at 401 about five extra minutes so far on that southbound travel time. elsewhere in chester county thornbury township watch out for a crash along dillworthtown road at westtown

around our country. they're going to be displaying about 100 of them in exhibit this year and we're bringing it back home to a place that i love to run. that is valley forge national historical park. hunter hayes landscape design. they put in two of these cabins here, the log cabins that you would see in valley forge national historical park, one there showing a tree crashing through, this one still intact. what they wanted to get out of this particular display was that, you know, the vine, the flowers, the wildlife taking back the terrain from the revolutionary war which stole some of the relics like this particular cannon here that is kind of being inter twined by life again. speaking of coming to life, spring is in fact going to be coming back to the delaware valley. we had a little snow earlier this morning but those numbers are bouncing to around 40 degrees in philadelphia with all that snow melted already. 40 in wilmington, line in allentown and even in southern

new jersey delaware. it's a little on the chilly side, 34 to 36 degrees. as you look at satellite and radar, we had some brush of snow early this morning. southern areas actually cape may county picking up close to 6-inches of snow. that storm is a beast out over the open waters of the atlantic but it is pulling down drier air so we're starting to clear the sky out and that will continue during the overnight hours in fact, you'll see the stars reappear and the moon turning on the chilly side though as those temperatures drop back into the 20's across the entire viewing area. in fact, lower 20's north and west, 27 through philadelphia. as we look at the upcoming weekend, we're going see a lot of clouds here both saturday and sunday. now it's kind of a flip-flop day here for both saturday sunday. saturday sun in the morning, sunday returning sun in the morning. in between a lot of clouds, seasonable high temperatures, 45 on saturday, 48 degrees on sunday and there will be a weak system coming through saturday night early sunday with a round of some morning snow showers especially north

and west of philadelphia and rain showers south and east. those areas in southeastern pennsylvania could pick up about a coating to an inch of snow here early on sunday morning. but that will be the last of winter at least for the next week. because we're going to have a massive ridge building in the deep south. with what that basically is is an area of high pressure with a lot of warmth stacked through the atmosphere so we get the southerly winds and you can see that orange color from the ohio valley valley, the tennessee valley the deep south to the midatlantic taking over, so we're getting a string of 70's here starting on tuesday, lasting right through thursday. as we look at the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast, again this weekend seasonable but a lot of clouds with temperatures right around 45 to 48 degrees. watch for a few of those rain and snow showers on sunday morning. then it's warmer with high clouds here on monday of 60 degrees and there are the 70's. tuesday feeling like spring, record warmth coming in on wednesday of 74.

>> meantime firefighters in west philadelphia spent the day trying to help seniors keep their home safe in case of fire. they teamed up with a local red cross to remind folks to change the batteries in their smoke detectors. they also performed safety checks on homes in the 100 block of south 58th street. firefighters say folks who change their batteries when the clocks change for daylight saving time are doing the right thing and we'll spring ahead of course next weekend. >> ♪ >> ♪

chad pradelli and dann cuellar are at the school tonight. chad let's begin with you. >> reporter: investigator say the conestoga football team had a culture of hazing that dates back several years and it led to violence this past fall when a freshman football player was allegedly violated with a broomstick. chester county district attorney tom hogan says when the conestoga freshman football player wouldn't strip and clean the locker room, three seniors held him down and violated him way broomstick. >> kids reported that the victim was yelling and screaming. but he did not have a friend in that locker room on that afternoon. >> reporter: it happened in october but authorities didn't learn about the alleged assault until last month. after the freshman told his father who went to school administrators. but hogan says there's been a culture of hazing for several years. the team had what's called no gay thursdays. >> you would have an older kid
