scalia, but there is a big political fight ahead. we turn now to the capitol for more. >> reporter: good afternoon the president's pick was not a surprise, judge garland was on the short list for consideration, and has faced the senate scrutiny before and now they say voters should have a vote in the matter. with that announcement a political showdown begins. president obama's nominee, 63-year-old merrick garland is the d.c. circuit court of appeals judge. >> he earned a track record as building a consensus as a judge that follows the law. >> there is no higher public service than serving as a member of the the supreme court.

>> president obama says that he is imminently qualified but republicans will block the nomination regardless. >> this vacancy will not be filld this year but look forward to the american people deciding who they want to make this appointment through their own votes. >> a promise that senate majority leader mitch mcconnell made in less than an hour after justice scalia's death was announced and then announced they would not even hold a hearing for the nominee. today they are optimistic about the pick. >> i think he is exceptionally qualified and will cause republicans to change course. >> and president obama is ratcheting up the pressure to e relent. >> the republican party has created a task force to block the nominee. democrats are responding with a coordinated effort of their own

two term governor in ohio. he is the favorite gop son in ohio. the room is behind me here at this time and the governor is due here momentarily. the room was packed an hour before kasich was due to arrive. anyone arriving after 11:15 will watch on a video feed in an overflow room. the governor is off his state win in ohio last night. many like people here are against abortion and he back a pathway to citizenship and is against donald trump's plan for massive deportation. >> from the beginning he said he would not get into the muddy politics and i respect that. i think he has done a great job of focusing on the positives on where he can take this country

know about the st. patrick's day forecast, will we get rain or will it stay mild. and a cool down for the weekend and perhaps some snow sunday night. >> thank you david. a fire investigation is underway in chester county, the two alarm blaze broke out this morning here in west town township. the flames consumed a home on the 100 block of south chester road, it took more than an hour to bring it under control. counselors are on hand after a tragedy loss to the student body. a student died from bacterial meningitis, letters went to parents telling them how to cope and how to stop the risk of infection. >> very a concern but you know i just told my daughter just you know, play it by ear and hopefully they have done everything they can do to you know make sure the environment

an american college student is sentenced to 15 years of hard labor in north korea for crimes against the state. he was arrested in january and the university of virginia student is accused of trying to steal a propaganda banner from a hotel when he was in north korea on a tour group. he was convicted today during a one hour trial. groups from newark, new jersey will test 1,000 children for led poisoning after finding they have elevated levels of led in their drinking water. they say the levels do not

officials in atlantic city is trying to make a deal to pay off a major debt. they are trying to sell baiter field. pen national almost bought the site for $800 million but the deal fell through. so now the city is hoping to sell it at a discount for $150 million, the proceeds would go towards the city's debt. a number of recent food scares are still hurting chipotle sales. sales were down 26% in february following a larger 36% decline in january, trying to bounce
