6:00 a.m., sunday march 20. here's what we're working on for you an "action news". a dramatic rescue in delaware home as firefighters fight a fire. plus it is one of the most holy days for christians many take time to celebrate palm sunday. first we turn the page on our calendars for the first day of spring. it will feel like winter. sky6 live hd is looking at the center city skyline. we have a bit of mixed bag with rain and snow, at least we're not looking at a lot of the

white stuff. meteorologist chris sowers is here with more. >> reporter: thanks goodness, first day of spring you'll need a heavier coat and gloves. sky6 livesky6 livesky6 live hd n atlantic city. we are picking up wet weather in cape may county. temperatures are chilly, 38 degrees right now in philadelphia. 35 in trenton. allentown, 33. poconos, 27 and upper 30s south and east. the numbers are cold for the first day of spring, when we are talking about snow they are mild. this will play a role in the accumulations we'll see overnight tonight. satellite and radar, we had a couple of mixed rain and snow showers pull through yesterday afternoon. now we have clouds and showers to the south, but an area of low pressure will start to reorganize off the virginia capes that will swing to the northeast it will brush the area

rescue a person from a burning home in delaware county. crews used chain saws to gain access through the roof of the home. the upper floor of the three story home were burning when firefighters arrived on the scene. one person was rescued from a third floor room and taken to crozer-chester hospital for treatment. there is no word on a cause. police took a man into custody for allegedly starting a fire in west kensington overnight. firefighters were called to the 3100 block of custer street. police say the man started fire by lighting curtains. a homeless man arrested for allegedly attacking a state supreme court justice near city hall will 0 face a judge in court this week. meanwhile, his mother is talking to "action news." she said maybe this will lead to

the help that her son needs. >> reporter: this mother opens up about her son's schizophrenia that left his homeless and led to the attack on the supreme court judge friday night. police say he hit kevin dougherty in the face after asking him for money near city hall. the 26-year-old was arrested nearby. a plaque in the home a reminder of a young man's baseball career. he was diagnosed which changed him. we would have him here and try to help him, but he wouldn't follow through with patient care or medications, because he said the medications make him feel like a zombie. >> reporter: living on the streets since october, james

doesn't recognize his illness, his mother plans to ask the judge to order the mental health help he needs. when he is given the option of leaving, he leaves. >> reporter: james has had two perceives convictions in 2009 and 2010. he faces simple assault and reckless endangerment charges for the most recent attack. jeff chirico channel 6 "action news." veterinarians areevaluatina home in holmesburg. 15 small dogs and two cats were taken away from the p spca, it is not clear if the homeowner faces any charges. donald trump's tough talk on immigration was met with

on sunday morning, thieves have started wrigley's museum, they stole an autographed bad. and shunken heads. the manage said it doesn't appear the they haves are related. it's not likely they will be able to sell the baseball memorabilia for what it's worth.

there were scary moments on board an alaska airline's flight when a passenger said an iphone caught on fire. a woman was watching a movie on the flight when the flames shot from the phone. there were 8-inch flames coming off the phone. the flames were getting higher and a lot of people stood up. the fire was put out by the flight attendants, the faa of the airline. put cell phone in airplane mode so you don't wear out your battery searching for a signal. that's incredible. >> reporter: and scary. also incredible is that it's the first day of spring. >> reporter: ah-huh. the good news it could be worse, temperatures are climbing in the mid 40s today. it will be cloudy out there, we'll see light snow tonight and

accumulations will be very, very minor. double scan live, we're clearing we have showers off the coast of cape may and wildwood, maybe a few spritzes and sprinkles. 38 degrees in philadelphia and wilmington. 38 in millville. dover, 39. mid 30s to the northwest. atlantic city 37 and beach haven 42. satellite and radar, what we're eventually watching is this right here, it's hard to pick out this morning, but an area of low pressure will develop off the coast of the carolinas of the virginia capes and this low will pull off to the northeast. it will be just close enough. here's the philadelphia area right here. it is close enough to throw back moisture into south jersey and delaware later tonight and into tomorrow morning. this is nothing more than just a nuisance effort. temperatures this afternoon, cloudy conditions for most, 45 degrees in philadelphia. by 1:00 p.m. maybe a couple of light rain showers for cape may and

atlantic county with temperatures in the low 40s. by 4:00 p.m. in the afternoon we'll see light rain showers across south jersey and delaware with a couple of snowflakes trying to mix in. temperatures in the upper 30s and low 40s. it's mild out there, in terms of show, obviously for today's date these are chilly temperatures. when we're talking about snow we have temperatures in the 40s that's mild. 1:00 p.m. we switch over to light snow. note the numbers, they are all above the 32 degrees which is the freezing mark. 8:00 a.m. most of it is long gone tap. tomorrow afternoon whafer snow you see -- whatever snow you see on the ground, it is long gone when temperatures climb into the low 40s and 50s. today is cloudy, rain showers are possible. wet snowflakes may mix in from time to time. overnight tonight, expect the transition over to light snow especially east of the delaware

4-1. the flyers are 3 points back. we definitely let a game go there, that's a frustrating feeling for everybody, we've been playing good hockey lately and this afternoon wasn't our best game. villanova plays in the second round of the ncaa tournament. the cats will face iowa, the same team that narrowly beat temple on friday. the cats had an easy time in their opener, but they expect a fight from the hawkeyes. they are in the top five the whole year, we know how good they are, we see the games they lost, two points to wisconsin and 4 points to ohio state. we know it's going to be a tough game. >> they are a very, very good team that's playing good basketball. beat a good temple team in overtime.

our guys are very cognizant about how good the team is. st. joe's play top seeded oregon ducks tonight. that win touched a lot of people none more than the philadelphia story, when you have villanova in the afternoon and temple with the crushing lost and st. joe's, philadelphia loves college basketball and they love winning. the union will finally give their home fans a peek, the team plays their home opener, against the revolution, they split their first two games on the road that included a victory last saturday. it doesn't mean anything unless we bounce back and come into our house, in front of our fans and have the same effort that we showed on the road. today's union revolution

overnight a northeast philadelphia baseball field became a crime scene, this morning police say they know who shot a teenager there. historic visit, president obama is ready to embark on a trip to cuba. plus we are tracking wet weather to start off the new season, a little rain a little snow, it will not be feeling like spring today, but it's here. the calendar says it's here. >> reporter: it will be here later this week. we have a chilly day, but we have mixed rain abbey snow showers later on.

the payoff is later this week when temperatures skyrocket into the 50 50s and 60s. some areas are seeing clearing, but the clouds will quickly increase again during the late morning hours and again some of the moisture moves in later on. 38 degrees, philadelphia, wilmington, millville, cape may. dover checking in at 39. allentown is chilly, poconos 27. trenton, 35 and atlantic city at the airport, 37 degrees, as i mentioned earlier in the broadcast for the first day of spring the numbers are cold. when tracking snow they are well above freezing which will play a key role in the accumulation we see overnight tonight into tomorrow morning. because the numbers have been so warm compared to freezing it's very difficult to get much to stick with the system. satellite and radar, an area of low pressure develops down here, skirts the coast before heading out and brushes us with light snow overnight tonight.

he left them when he ran away from a scene. a man is in the hospital after his suv flipped over on a philadelphia street, the 900 block of east cathedral road in the andora section of the city. it took ten minutes to free the trapped driver. he was taken to einstein medical center with non-life threatening injuries. this morning, palm sunday service will go on inspite of a fire that burned a delaware church. firefighters were called to the church on the 100 block of darby borough, the creative minds children's center is attached to want church. the day care is trying to figure out how to care for the children come tomorrow morning. we're trying to relocate the children to the area, so if someone is listening to this

it 21 members of an indiana basketball team were inside the school bus that was flipped over on its side. 6 adults were on the bus. no life threating injuries. the players were heading to a

state semifinals playoff game. a teenage pilot made an emergency landing on a kansas golf course after his small plane experienced engine trouble. he did a masterful job finding his way on the golf course before making the crash landing. the faa is investigating. students at a florida school had a very special visitor, a ten foot long alligator. a couple of students at the school in lake land spotted the gator on friday and told the teacher. moments later, a barefoot trapper stood up, the trapper calmed the i'm and wrapped its mouth in tape he loaded it in a pick up truck and took it to a

here. it is getting its act together in the next 24 hours. it will run up the eastern seaboard. fortunately for us when it throws back moisture it will be a smaller amount. this storm will be bumped by the cooler high that is sliding to the east. we're being brushed by the coastal system in the next 24 hours. it's not too bad. it's chilly out there, but when we are talking about snow, 45 degrees is mild for anything to stick. cloudy conditions this afternoon rain showers to the south across cape may and atlantic counties where temperatures are in the 40s. over the next several hours, temperatures in the 30s and 40s throughout the day. rain showers south and east of the city. flakes may mix in from time to time. it goes over to a period of light snow tonight. 1:00 a.m. you can see the light snow is flying across south jersey and delaware. temperatures are well above freezing, 34, 35.

it starts sticking. it's only sticking on grassy surfaces. the early morning hours, 7:00 a.m., 8:00 a.m., it's out of here, temperatures respond nicely by afternoon, closing in on 50 degrees tomorrow for the high. accumulations this is the latest from accuweather looks like a coating to an inch for most of the area. a lehigh valley and the poconos this is a nonevent for the guys up there. the far western suburbs, lancaster, reading maybe as far west as pottstown it's mainly going to be areas east of the delaware river where you pick up a coating to an inch. one to three from the jersey shore wildwood, atlantic city to lakehurst. this could change if it shifts farther to the west or shifts faster out to sea well push it closer to the coast. 45 in wilmington, philadelphia,

died. it happened on west main street yesterday afternoon. the victim is a 20-year-old man from massachusetts. school leaders from the university of delaware say he is not a student. although fraternity members live at the home, it is not considered a frat house affiliated with a school. it was more than a year since a father of 6 was shot to death at a friends home in camden. today the search continues for his killer. rick williams has more in the crime fighters report. he had a lot of joy in his life. >> reporter: 35-year-old harold gordon was known as torrell he was a father of 6. gordon was watching one of his sons when his aunt said he got a phone call. supposedly he had a phone call saying man, come help me out. these guys doing this about the

basketball court. >> reporter: around 5:00 p.m., gordon went to the friend's house along the thousand block of division street in camden. the friend was not home. that's when gordon was shot a couple of times. the family gathered at cooper university hospital and stood vigil by gordon for days, he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries on january 23. he did not deserve whatever happened to him. it is extremely frustrating it's federal rules straight to talk to the -- frustrating to talk to the families because you want to give them justice. >> reporter: the citizens crime commission is administering 3,500-dollar reward for the arrest and conviction of the person response call 215-546-tips -- person responsible. call 215-546-tips. all calls remain anonymous. the family are the victims at this point we are in mourning

that have been invading southern california neighborhoods. it's not music to the people who live there. the frog is native to puerto rico. it is an endangered species so it's illegal to harm them. a jersey shore community is eligible to receive financial help to recover from january's historic blizzard. correspondent new mexico has the details from -- nora muchanic has details. >> reporter: sea isle city mayor is thrilled with the news that cape may is among 17 counties in new jersey eligible for federal aid to reimburse them for the cleanup of the january blizzard that brought severe flooding to many shore towns. we took a hit in private and public damage.
