the visitors center at the u.s. capitol building just moments ago police said there is no indication of terrorism. monday night, rick is off, brian taff joins us and the big story on "action news" is that chaos on capitol hill. >> it happened about two hours ago. lawmakers were on recess today, many of them home on vacation but a visitor's center that was packed with spring break tourists was forced to shelter-in-place. lauren lister live where police just held a news conference giving us the latest and lauren has the details from washington. >> reporter: all of capitol hill was on lockdown this afternoon. you can see parts of it are still blocked off after shots were fired in the visitor's center complex. scary moments inside the visitor's center complex at the u.s. capitol after shots were fired. >> they said there's a shooter and so we ran out and then as we were coming out they said get back against the wall.

>> pandemonium started. they said get out of here. guns were drawn. and they were pushing us out. it was literally pandemonium. >> capitol police, ar-15's runninginaudible] >> reporter: capitol police shot the suspect who was transported via plans. the capitol was put on lockdown. no one was allowed to enter or leave the police headquarters. >> it was scary hearing that over the loudspeaker. at the end of the day i think they did the best they could given the circumstances. >> reporter: you left your wallet behind. >> cell phone, my whole life is in there. more important to get out than actually worry about that. >> reporter: the house and senate are both in recess this week. the white house was never under a an official lackdown although the secret service did take certain security measures. washington, d.c. police stating on twitter this afternoon this was an isolated incident with no threat to the

public. lauren lyster acn news, capitol hill. now back to you. >> lauren thanks very much. now to an alleged locker room tradition of hazing that spurred big changes at a chester county high school. three students now face charges after a freshman was violated and a football coach has resigned. tonight's students and parents get their chance to sound off on the situation at hand. >> "action news" reporter dann cuellar live at that school in berwyn ahead of tonight's assembly with much more. good evening dann. >> reporter: good evening monica. school district officials will be meeting with families behind closed doors to talk about ways of preventing future hazing activity. they're also planning on hiring experts to come up with a plan for the entire district. >> this is a simple case about ignorance, violence and a shocking lack of supervision. >> reporter: it was earlier this month that chester county d.a. tom hogan painted a picture of a hazing culture in a conestoga high varsity

football team that for at least three or four years team members were left unsupervised on thursdays to do as they wished in the locker room. they say that gave birth to what was known as no gay thursdays where anything students normally thought was gay was not gay. >> you would have an older kid come behind a younger kid and put his genitals on top of the younger kid's head. and that was okay on thursdays. >> reporter: but authorities say on october of last year things reached a darker violent level. that's when they say three 17-year-old members of the team held down a 14-year-old freshman and violated him with a broom handle. >> kids reported that the victim was yelling and screaming but he did not have a friend in that locker room on that afternoon. >> reporter: authorities say the ah atmosphere was so bad that some players refused to go anywhere near the locker room on thursdays. some players even quit the team. and yet, the coaching staff says they were unaware of any of this. now, the three students were

charged with assault. the head coach resigned. rest of the coaching staff also relieved of their duties. officials now hope to come up with a plan to foster and maintain what they call a positive and respectful sports culture free of hazing. we're live here in berwyn, i'm dann cuellar channel6 "action news. >> thank you dann. police in delaware are investigating after a camera was found inside the women's bathroom at a restaurant. according to officials in new castle county, that camera was in a trash can on the camera's memory card were more than a hundred clips of women using the restroom there. john rawlins is following the story for us today. he'll have more from delaware coming up tonight at 6:00. >> turn nothing accuweather this afternoon. and a wind advisory in that effect for parts of our area tonight. let's take a live look outside right now. sky6 hd showing you a beautiful shot of penn's landing and the delaware river. gusts could hit 50 miles an hour in some spots.

meteorologist cecily tynan live now outside with a first look at the accuweather forecast. cecily. >> hi, brian, definitely hold onto your hats tonight. it is going to be a windy one but the sunshine is out this evening. satellite6 along with action radar showing the system that brought us the rain this morning has now pulled up to the north and the east and there's really to two low pressures, double barrel low pressure system and what these two low pressures will do is consolidate, move in together and deepen and that's what will be pulling down the very strong winds. even now the wind gusts in philadelphia 40 miles an hour and the winds will be intensifying this evening so the national weather service has issued a wind advisory until midnight for wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour. so, what this means, you could be dealing with some broken tree limbs especially on some of the older trees. could cause some isolated power outages, a good idea to secure loose objects around your yard. maybe some patio furniture and when you're driving especially

6,000 applications and we're also constantly receiving them from the state through their new online voter registration application. >> reporter: gregory irving the administrator for voter registration in philadelphia says there are two reasons for the uptick. first of ail, in case you haven't noticed, it is a presidential election year and secondly, the deadline to register for the april 26th pennsylvania primary is today. so, if you live in philadelphia, and you still have not registered, the good news is there's still time. >> we're opened until 12:00 p.m. midnight. they can come into our counter here fill out a form. we will process that and once we do, we will mail them out a voter registration card which tells them where they are registered at and gives them their voting location. >> reporter: most other registration offices across the state will also remain opened through tonight. the news is even better for procrastinating voters in delaware and inform. the registration deadline in delaware is not until this coming saturday april 2nd while in new jersey the can cutoff is may 17th. we spoke with people getting

>> new airport security video is released today showing the brussels airport bombing suspect. the man in that light colored jacket and hat is still on the run tonight. in the meantime dozens of raids over the weekend led to the arrest of three people in the manhunt for the terrorists involved and officials have confirmed now four americans are among the now 35 killed in that blast. >> health check tonight if you have been keeping an eye out for calorie listings on the menu when you go out to eat you have to keep waiting. there's another delay in rolling out a 2010 federal law that requires posting those calorie counts.

>> health reporter and registered nurse ali gorman to explain the backup. >> reporter: some cities such as philadelphia have their own menu labeling laws but the government passed one for everyone as you said in 2010. it was supposed to go into effect 2015. it got pushed back to 2016. and now they have pushed it back again until 2017. the federal law requires chain restaurants and also convenience stores and grocery stores to clearly post the calorie counter for prepared food. a pushback from some retailers including many supermarkets has caused the delay. still some companies have already started posting information nationwide. but this delay in the federal law makes it difficult for cities with their own rules to enforce them because the federal law can supersede local laws once in effect. researchers in orlando say they have a promising new blood test that can help diagnosis traumatic brain injury. they follow nearly 600 people who came into the emergency

room and studied two proteins in the blood that have been linked to brain injury. they found the levels of those proteins were significantly higher for people with severe brain injuries. this could help doctors determine who needs a ct scan or detect head injury even if there are no symptoms and it's days later. the hope is it will also help diagnosis concussions in adults and athletes. >> with the tools we have now, they're really not sensitive enough to detect all of these injuries so we're hoping that the blood tests will be that tool. >> reporter: right now this is just a preliminary study. and we know having good posture can help prevents aches and pains but now a new study says it may also help your love life by helping you make a good first impression. the nationwide study found that speed daters were more likely to say yes to a second meeting with a person sitting up straight with relaxed open arms. people who are hunched over or cross their arms didn't get that second date. and the same thing happened

>> take a look at this. passengers on a commercial flight snapped this picture of a volcano erupting in alaska. the eruption sent ash 20,000 feet in the air forcing some international flights to reroute. one plane's pilot went ahead and brought passengers as close as they safely could allowing them to get this birds' eye view. wow. septa is making it a little easier to live in pennsylvania but work in delaware. the agency's wilmington newark line is adding two express trains from delaware and center city between the two starting next month. they will stop at all four stations in delaware leaving wilmington at 5:15 and 6:15. the express routes saves commuters about 10 or 15 minutes a day and that is nearly an hour they save each week. >> a south jersey police department honors three of their fallen brothers in blue today. donald aleshire, william wurst

shaking with the winds because we do have wind gusts right now anywhere from 31 to 44 miles per hour out of the west. philadelphia the wind gust right now 40 miles per hour. that's beginning to pull down some cooler air. temperatures earlier today in the upper 60's, about 10 degrees above normal. that was a warm wind but now it's starting to bring in some cooler air especially in the northwest suburbs with temperatures that dropped down into the upper 50's. philadelphia 63 degrees. millville 67 and cape may 60. and it will also bring clearing skies. big change from this morning. it was a wet morning commute generally looking at about a half inch of rain. atlantic city a little bit more than that. that system is pulling away but it's strengthening as it does. really two low pressures there forming together. they're consolidating and what we have waiting in the wings is high pressure building in from the west. so what this does, it creates that wind tunnel effect so tonight that wind advisory in that effect until midnight for wind gusts up to 50 miles per

hour. and even tomorrow is going to be on the breezy side. so for tonight a very windy night, clearing skies, overnight low 41 degrees in philadelphia. allentown 35. reading 36. trenton 39 and cape may 43 degrees. and tomorrow's going to be a lot cooler than today. today again made it up to about 67 degrees in philadelphia. tomorrow more seasonable with a high of 56. 57 is the normal high for this time of the year. allentown 52. cape may 53. and wilmington 56 degrees. we will have a good amount of sunshine but winds up to about 30 miles per hour. if you have allergies, it's going to be a tough week. the pollen forecast really medium to high all week long until we get into the weekend. maple and juniper the main culprits this time of year. so, the five day forecast showing tomorrow 56 degrees, plenty of sunshine but it will be a windy day. wednesday the pick of the week. mostly sunny and mild with a high of 60. on thursday, it warms up to 72 degrees ahead of a cold front cold front but that cold front will bring us some rain

governor nathan deal will veto a controversial bill that critics say discriminates against the lgbt community. now a lawsuit has been filed over a similar lawsuit in north carolina. elizabeth hur. >> reporter: whether this bill is discriminatory or not depends depends on who you ask. the georgia governor says he's rejecting the bill because in his view there's no need for such a law. calling his decision based on sound judgment and solid reason,. >> georgia is a welcoming state. >> reporter: georgia governor nathan deal says he will not sign off on the controversial religious liberty bill. >> that is the character of georgia. i intend to do my part to keep it that way. >> reporter: the bill would have allowed clergy to refuse to perform same-sex marriages and protected churches and

carolina is just the beginning and this is a case that could reach the supreme court. we are live in new york, i'm elizabeth hur for channel6 "action news. monica, back to you. >> david muir will have much more on this civil rights battle and you can watch that following "action news" at 6:00. >> philadelphia police release surveillance video showing a gunman using a rifle in the middle of a sidewalk in germantown. the shooting happened just before 1:00 a.m. thursday in the 5600 block of clue avenue. investigators say the gunman approached a plan in his 40's and then opened fire and shot that victim several times. the victim was last known to be in critical condition. police are still looking for this shooter today. meanwhile new information tonight about a murder in north philadelphia. police have identified the victim who was found shot to death in a vacant lot. investigators say edward jefferson was killed early saturday morning in the 1500 block of north 19th street. police have not released details about a suspect or any possible motive. >> employees at a walgreens in logan circle will to run for

cover after a shoplifter point add gun at them. police say on friday morning the suspect stole a number of electric stimulators used for back pain. the employees tried to prevent the man from leaving the store by stopping the revolving door there with their feet but the man then pointed a gun at them and obviously the suspect ran away. >> philadelphia police are searching for a burglar who broke into an apartment and steel fully loaded gun in the city's roxborough section. the incident happened at the wood mere apartments on the 8200 block of henry avenue. police say the suspect used a crowbar to break into the apartment while another person acted as a lookout. police say security at the apartment complex scared those thieves off. >> lucky turn of events there. all right, let's check that accuweather -- not accuweather, let's check the traffic situation for folks driving home in rush hour. >> no less accurate is matt pelman standing by in the "action news" traffic center. hey,. >> the we try but the bottom line is the news isn't very pleasant in a lot of spots. here on 95 plenty of

southbound slowing but this is normal stuff for us from just south of the airport to this point in ridley park down to 320. a lot of downed trees, downed wires this afternoon because of the whipping winds. here in middletown township delco there's a set of downed wires along barren road, also a downed tree with downed wires along park mount road. in radnor township delco you got downed wires along gulph creek road. that leads to traffic light troubles nearby along king of prussia road and now there's a downed tree along darby paoli road as well. it was early construction in the ongoing zone on 295 southbound that continues to give us big delays headed into the first state this afternoon. out of new jersey into delaware across the delaware memorial driven speeds are really slow because of that ongoing work zone. you might want to use the commodore barry instead. in mount laurel burlington county there's a crash on 295 southbound approaching 73. single digit speeds there. if you want to use the southbound new jersey turnpike that looks clear at this point. or 130 southbound could be another option. in voorhees a wreck along

>> firefighters are trying to find out if this massive blaze in los angeles was arson. it started about 5:00 this morning in a building that used to be a church in south l.a. more than 100 firefighters helped control the flames. fortunately nobody was hurt but according to reports this building did house a transitional living facility for the homeless. officials are still investigate wag caused a helicopter to crash in northeastern pennsylvania. the chopper went down last night in pike county. the pilot who was the only person on board died. officials still do not know what caused the crash in a wooded area. officials had to use pings from the pilot's cell phone to even finds the wreckage. an autopsy's planned for

tomorrow morning to see if the pilot suffered some kind of medical emergency. >> 10 car thieves are still on the run tonight after they pulled off an lab raider heist. looks like something out of the movies. the thieves were able to break into a deal slip and steal eight cars in just two minutes. the whole thing was caught on camera. police in tampa say the suspects were able to match the keys with the brand new cars. two of those cars have since been recovered but so far there have not been any arrests. the coast guard released this video today showing a major drug bust off the coast of panama. the crews said there were more than 12,000 pounds of cocaine on that submarine-like ship nearly $200 million in value. four suspected drug smugglers were taken into custody and the coast guard was able to seize 12,000 pounds of cocaine before the ship and 800 pounds of drugs sank to the bottom of the ocean. >> here's an encouraging update to your. six months after a teenager was blessed by pope francis when he was in the u.s., she

for their final four date with the oklahoma sooners. it's a busy week of practice ahead. our jaime apody is live on the campus with more on the cats. jamie. >> reporter: hey there ducis. this team getting ready for oklahoma. in fact they had an extended film session. they were supposed to talk to us at 5 o'clock. instead the team and coach jay wright just arrived inside here in their practice facility to start speaking with the media. check it out. players are seated in chairs. there's daniel ochefu the star senior and they're talking to the media individually. jay wright just walked in and there's crowds of people around each player. you can tell that the final four is upon us because i haven't seen as much media around a local college basketball team here in long time. but we are getting ready for them to play oklahoma. there you see coach jay wright. now, let's take a look at how they got here. they beat kansas over the weekend 64-59. it was a great performance in the elite eight.

a game that villanova was up in stretches, then down and then they got some hot shooting at the end and now they're on to face oklahoma and buddy hield. the question is can they beat this team that already beat them by double digits earlier in december especially facing a player like buddy hield who scored 37 points in the elite eight. jay wright says he likes his team's focus even among the distractions that the final four can bring. >> they can do. that but that is the great challenge at each level you get when you get to the ncaa tournament there's a lot of hype, you know, and then when you get to the sweet 16 it's more. when you get to the final four it's off the charts, you know. that's why thank god we were there once before so we have a little bit of a feel and we can hopefully help the players handle it. >> reporter: and they're handling this pretty well right now. they're not available tomorrow. they're going the leave wednesday for houston and the final four. we'll be with them all the way and i got to go to talk to

satellite and radar we have two areas of low pressure. one that pushed just to our south and then another one that pushed to our north and west. we were kind of squeeze played between the two of them. what's happening now is the two are going to merge and create a bigger storm in northern parts of new england and halifax and nova scotia and that will really send and crank those winds around this low pressure center as high pressure moves in from the west. so for tonight gusty winds and turning clear. there's a few clouds left over in some spots. they will clear out, 35 to 41 degrees, a little chill in the air tonight with that west-northwesterly wind sustained 15 to 30 miles per hour. during the day tomorrow lots of sunshine in center city but a whole lot cooler. a high of just 56 degrees with that northwesterly wind. still sustained throughout the day 15 to 30 miles an hour. the wind advisory, it does expire at midnight but the winds will stay pretty gusty through the day tomorrow even in the lehigh valley with that sunshine of 53 degrees and down the shore tomorrow, sunny

there as well. but breezy. gusts up to 35 miles an hour with a high temperature coming in at 54 degrees. and it's quiet even as we go into the day on wednesday. as we take a look at the temperature and departure for the next six to 10 days, we looked at this at the beginning of march and the west coast and the parts of the rockies, that's where it's below normal. well, about a month later as we go into the next one to two weeks, the greatest below normal temperatures going into the first of april will be the midatlantic into parts of new england as well as the great lakes, so a completely different outlook as like a seesaw effect, everything has switched here from march to april as we get cooler going into the new month. so, the exclusive accuweather he seven-day forecast, 56 sunshine tomorrow but windy. mostly sunny less wind on wednesday, 60 degrees. and very mild on thursday, early sun gives way to late rain and it's a wet start to your friday but then a sunny finish, very mild at 68 and

officers fired. the suspect is in surgery. a woman bystander suffered minor injuries. no police officers were injured. authorities say the suspect is known to capitol police and that this was a criminal act but not an act of terrorism. there is no further threat to the public and the capitol visitor's center will be opened tomorrow. world news tonight with david muir will have the latest on the incident at the capitol. that is ahead at 6:30 right after "action news" on channel6. authorities are saying that the co-pilot taken off the flight from detroit to philadelphia because he was allegedly drunk has been identified as 50-year-old john francis mcguire and he is from chadds ford.
