nba single season record for wins. they recorded win 72 last night against san antonio. they can set the record wednesday at home against memphis. those are some of our top stories on then monday, april 11th. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now." >> good morning. we say welcome. >> thank you very much. great to be here. >> diane macedo. your first day here on abc "world news now." how does it feel? >> so far so good. the cameras are still rolling. they haven't kicked me out of the studio yet. but thumbs up. >> good, good. of course, welcome. we're happy to have you here. >> we begin with the major protests expected today over north carolina's anti-lgbt law flow bruce springsteen cancelled is last night's concert there because of the law. rob claiborne has the latest. >> reporter: the boss often belts out he was born to run. this week north carolina is the place he's running from.

bruce springsteen canceling a concert there protesting that the state's new law specifying sex on a birth certificate determines which bathroom facilities can be use discriminates against transgender people saying in a statement, some things are more important than a rock show and this fight against prejudice and bigotry is one of them. for stevi van zandt, the boycott wasn't a hard decision. >> you got to hurt people economically to have them do the right thing morally. >> north carolina enacted religious freedom laws following the u.s. supreme court decision permitting gay marriage in 2015. mississippi is the most recent. >> honest people who have a legitimate objection to what's going on a religious objection having a course of action now. >> many of the laws allow businesses to refuse service on religious grounds to gay or transgender people. restrict local communities everyone passing anti-discrimination laws and specify who can use which

bathroom facilities. according to the human rights campaign, nearly 200 variations of these byes in 34 states have been introduced since last summer. in response, big business has reacted decisively, more than 120 businesses including intel, uber and youtube calling on north carolina to repeal its new law. >> georgia is a welcoming state. >> reporter: in flabing georgia, the governor vetoed similar legislation there after boycotts were threatened. >> i do not think that we have to discriminate against anyone to protect the faith-based community in georgia. >> reporter: but with new laws being enacted this latest battle in the culture wars is now headed back to the courts. ron claiborne, abc news, new york. overseas now the death toll from a fireworks explosion at a temple in india passed 100. witnesses described the scene as utter chaos and panic after power was shut off after the blast. other explosions sent flames and

debris raining down. board members have been arrested and could face serious charges. overseas revelations coming from the investigation of the brussels terror attack. brussels apparently was not the first choice target. alex marquardt has the details. >> reporter: new troubling revelations tonight from the man in the hat, mohamed abrini. he told interrogators that the deadly attacks in brussels were not the original plan. instead, after the paris attacks, the terror cell intended to attack in france again. but, "surprised by the speed of the progress in the ongoing investigation," the prosecutor said, "they urgently took the decision to strike in brussels." authorities say abrini has admitted that after the two suicide bombers detonated themselves at the airport, he fled, the escape recorded by surveillance cameras. on the way, he claims he ditched his tan coat in the garbage, and sold the hat. >> anytime you arrest key players in a network it gives you the opportunity to figure

out the network. >> reporter: abrini has now been charged with terrorist murder, along with osama krayem, a 23-year-old swedish national. seen in this new photo at the maalbeek metro station with the suicide bomber just before the attack. belgian authorities are now saying that all the most important members of this terror cell are either dead or have been captured. but the hunt continues for others connected to these attacks and officials warn the threat to belgium, france and the rest of europe remains very high. alex marquardt, abc news, brussels. >> turning to politics back here in this country as the candidates focus on the next big prize, the new york primary set for next week. ted cruz is hoping to keep his momentum going after locking up the rest of colorado's republican delegates for a clean sweep. donald trump held a rally in upstate new york following a four-daybreak from the campaign trail. trump complained about the political system, but he expressed confidence that he would eventually win the race.

>> you know, i've been saying it, the american dream is dead but i'm going to make it bigger and better and stronger than ever before. you watch. you watch. >> trump also lashed out at the boston globe after the newspaper's editorial board printed a satirical front page of him. the fake story dated april 9th, 2017 lampoons what a trump press is he might look like predicting deportations and riots. >> democrats gearing up for their next debate as the new york primary gets closer. bernie sanders clinched wyoming, victory number seven of the last eight states. but after a week of heated exchanges, hillary clinton is still very far ahead in the delegate race. abc's david wright has the latest. >> reporter: at coney island boardwalk, no time for fun and games. bernie sanders grabbed a hot dog at nathan's near the world-famous cyclone. >> are you guys ready to go on the death ride? the one that goes all the way

down? >> reporter: he could easily have been talking about the topsy-turvy democratic race for president. >> the one that goes -- whoa! >> reporter: sanders is now vowing to contest the nomination all the way to the convention. telling george on "this week," he'll fight to prevent a clinton coronation. >> i think the momentum is with us. we've come a really, really long way. and i think we can win this. >> reporter: hillary clinton insists sanders is wrong. >> i feel good about the upcoming contests, and i expect to be the nominee. >> reporter: new york could be the key to determining who's right. clinton is ahead in the polls and pulling out all the stops. bill clinton is out stumping for her here, refusing to even think about the possibility she won't win. >> she's 2.3 million votes ahead. and 250 delegates ahead. how could you even ask that? >> reporter: and yet, swiping through may not be as easy as she hoped. she joked with new york's mayor about the metro card. >> will you just fix these metro

card slots in the subway? >> the new york city subway is the best way to get around. >> reporter: on "saturday night live," the joke was entirely at her expense. >> is this a working metro card? >> reporter: a little more than a week to go before the new york primaries, state officials have reported an unprecedented surge in last minute voter registrations. this primary shaping up to be a real battle. david wright, abc news, new york. a dispute in new orleans has left a former member of the saints football team dead. police say 34-year-old will smith was shot and killed saturday night in a case of road rage. the gunman who rear ended smith's car and allegedly took his life is 28-year-old cardell hayes. he's now being held on a million dollar bond. he was arrested after remaining at the scene of the incident. his attorney says hayes is innocent and that wasn't -- that he wasn't the aggressor. a pilot is recovering from serious injuries after his plane crashed in a neighborhood on new york's long island.

amazingly, it missed -- it didn't hit any homes. the biper aircraft apparently developed engine problems just after takeoff and was trying to return to the airport when it crashed. no one on the ground was hurt. the pilot has serious injuries. the passenger in that plane is expected to be okay. gas prices are accelerating upwards. a gallon of self-service regular is now eight cents more than three weeks ago to an average of $2.10. the lindberg berg surveil expects prices to continue 0 rise at a moderate pace as refiners switch to the more expensive summer blend. crude oil prices are on the rise because of an unexpected draw the in u.s. stockpiles. >> the planet hunter is almost 75 miles from earth and has gone into emergency mode for some unknown reason. that means it's burning through fuel more quickly. kep lar was doing just fine a week ago. the space telescope was launched six years ago to hunt for

surfacing at his first rally in four days. >> have you ever heard anybody say other than me today, that donald trump has millions from votes more than cruz. >> reporter: trump fighting back his closest rival ted cruz. cruz picking up his latest win saturday sweeping all the delegates in colorado and bringing the gop closer to a contested convention. >> i believe the first ballot will be the highest vote total donald trump receives an on a subsequent ballot, we're going to win the nomination. >> reporter: john kasich saying he's the only one who can actually beat a democrat in the general election. >> when are we going to pick somebody who can't win? that would be nuts. >> reporter: but the next big batsal ground is trump territory, the billionaire pulling way ahead in his home state. >> so many revelations coming to light in the investigation of the brussels terror attacks coming from mohammed an bre flee who says he's the man in the hat seen on video at the airport.

officials say he has told them brussels was not the cell's original target. their plan called for another round of attacks in france but the group was forced into action because they thought investigators were focusing in. he says he threw his coat away and that he sold the hat. >> hundreds of migrants hurt in a violent confrontation with police in macedonia. officers used tear gas and plastic but thes in an effort to stop them from getting oefrg the border fence with greece. tens of thousands of people have been camped out in macedonia in hopes of getting to greece and eventually western europe. in asia now, earlier this morning, secretary of state john kerry made a historic visit to the atomic bomb memorial in hiro sheem na, japan becoming the most senior american official to travel to that city touring its peace museum with other foreign ministers. kerry did not speak public will you but later tweeted in part saying that the memorial was a compelling reminder not only of our obligation to end the threat

of nuclear weapons but to rededicate all our effort to avoid war itself. the cia will not water board suspected terrorists again. that's the words from chief john brennan in an interview with abc news, he ruled out all so-called enhanced interrogation practices even if the future president orders it. >> absolutely i would not agree to having any cia officer carrying out waterboarding. >> republican presidential hopeful donald trump has said he would bring backwater boarding and "worse." ted cruz said during the same debate he didn't think waterboarding was torture and would use it if necessary. it was used on suspected terrorists after the 9/11 attacks but banned by president obama early in his administration. >> the man charged with the murder of saints player will smith is being held on $1 million bond. smith was killed saturday night after attending a festival in new orleans. abc's eva pilgrim with the details. >> reporter: a football

star killed, leaving a city and fans across the country in shock. former new orleans saint defensive end will smith, shot over what appears to be a case of road rage. >> please, god! >> reporter: this wife crying out as paramedics carried her away shot in the leg. former teammate pierre thomas, described as a witness by police, seen clearly upset leaving the scene. >> the shooter's on the scene. we have one gun recovered on scene. >> reporter: cardell hayes charged with second degree murder. police say his hummer hit smith's mercedes near an intersection. the two drivers -- believed to be strangers -- began arguing and that's when hayes allegedly began firing. he was arrested at the crime scene. >> it is certainly tragic on all sides. one life is over and another life is ruined. >> reporter: just hours earlier, smith posting this selfie on instagram of him with his wife in the french quarter, writing, "having a blast." the 34-year-old played nine seasons with the saints. including 2009, when he helped bring home the city's first championship.

that team, and the sports world, now shattered by his death. lebron james tweeting, "prayers and con del lenses sent out to will smith and his beautiful." drew brees saying, "mourning the loss of a great friend and teammate. such a senseless tragedy. please pray for racquel and their children." the saints releasing this statement, "we are devastated and saddened by will's tragic and preventable death due to a senseless act that will leave a lasting scar on our community forever." hayes hat nos entered a plea. the judge set his bond for $1 million. eva pilgrim, abc news, new york. a southwest teacher is in trouble after allegedly hitting a student. mary hastings was arrested after someone poefrt this had video online allegedly shows her sweeping papers off the student's deck, then slapping him five times. the boy had apparently disrupted the class. hastings is free on bail and on
