legend. flyers owner and founder ed snyder has died after a long battle with cancer. his death comes two days after the flyers scosh a spot -- score a spot in the playoffs. they starting point round one against the capitols on thursday. matt o'donnell takes a look at ed snyder's enormous legacy. the flyers win the stanley cup. >> reporter: ed snyder secured an nhl team back in 196650 years ago, the philadelphia flyers won who would be two consecutive stanley cups. it's very thrilling to know when we had our first parade going down broad street. starting our very first season nobody came, and seven years later there were 2 million

people. this is a hockey town. >> reporter: snyder was born the son of a grocery store owner in 1933 in washington, d.c. he had to teach a region that had little exposure to hockey to understand the game. they did that and more. the flyers have one of the most passionate fan bases in the nhl. mr. sniermd was -- mr. snyder was a shrewd businessman. he famously fired coaches at the drop of a hat and expected excellence with his team and passion during every shift. he was the chairman of sixers and what would become the parent company. he was elected to the nhl hall of fame in 1988. he is survived by his wife, three daughters and three sons and several grandchildren and leaves behind a legacy of philanthropy. the ed snyder foundation and the

his california home on the west coast road trip they have gone 26-12 and 7 since the playoffs. the way he treated them, win or lose, the passion 9 -- the preference will stay with him long after he is gone. he talked about hockey and life, we wished we could have seen him a little bit more during the season. we missed him coming in the room after the games. after a win he would get fired up and get excited, kind of missed that a little bit. he extended the invite for all the players to come we all went in there, he was so gracious and just to get that opportunity to spend a little more time with mr. snyder and talk to him, it meant a lot to all of us. when you think of philadelphia flyers and everything that we're about,

cause of death. it is suspected he died of a drug overdose. there was a party saturday night, they found his body on sunday. a person was struck and killed on the tracks of the septa market frankford line. annie mccormick has the latest on the story from west philadelphia. >> reporter: a woman was hit and killed by a train in the middle of morning rush hour. septa hurried to move commuters to alternate routes as police and firefighters responded. we were approaching 40th street and the train stopped. >> reporter: a woman jumped in front of an eastbound train on the market frankford line and pronounced at the scene. anthony davis was one of the passengers. i seen people with flashlights saying there was someone under the train. >> reporter: immediately septa dispatched back up to get hundreds of affected commuters on to shuttle buses operating in

$100 million bonds. former saints player will smith was shot by cardell hayes on saturday night. he rear ended his car an shot him during an argument. his wife survived. hayes was arrested on the charge of second degree murder. >> a teacher is charged with assault after she was captured on video repeatedly slapping a students in math class. 63-year-old mary hastings knocked papers off his desk and hit him several times. another student recorded cell phone video of the incident. the video does not explain what led up to the classroom assault. hastings has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. brian adams called off a concert in mississippi to protest the new policy which allows religious groups and

meteorologist david murphy is here you are going to the game this afternoon for a home opener. you will take a light jacket? >> reporter: i'm taking a couple of layers because it's going to be breezy and we might catch shade later in the day. the beer hat you wear -- >> reporter: storm tracker 6 live double scan [laughter] shows you that we are dry. never know with you. there are a couple of sprinkles up north. if you're in reading you'll get caught with this briefly. allentown more of the same. i don't expect the showers to go much farther south. ballpark probably in good shape. as we look outside we have the tulips under the clouds this morning waving around in the breeze. it's going to be a breezy one today. it was this morning when the action cam was out in fairmont park.
