it took him only seven years to win a stanley cup, and give the city its first championship parade. but snider became more than the owner of the flyers. he became, one of the most recognizable, and philanthropic citizens of philadelphia. ed snider died this morning the at the age of 83. it is monday night, and the big story on "action news" tonight is death of the philadelphia icon. ed snider lost his two year battle with bladder cancer earlier today at his home in california. it is hard to overestimate snider's influence, on the local sports scene. he came to philadelphia, in 1964 as a part owner of the eagles. but when the nhl announced they were going to expand from the original six teams, snider wanted in and thus was born the orange and black. he created spectrum, created spectacor, established prism which became comcast sports net, bought wip, built wells

fargo center, ran the sixers but none of that may be snider's most important legacy. in 2005, he created the ed snider youth hockey foundation. "action news" reporter vernon odom is live at the wells fargo center. vernon, of course that foundation is about much more than hockey. it is all because of ed snider. >> reporter: good evening, jim. ed snider's reputation around this town was legendary for hard nosed businessman with sharp elbows, who played hard ball when it came down to dollars and cents but here's a look at his tender love for his adopted hometown. the youth hockey program in this city rec center in cobbs creek is profoundly built up when ed snider's youth hockey program came aboard in a partnership ten years ago. the it is one of five programs in city recollect sent's cross the city. >> only thing he has attached

his name too. so he is told us that he wanted it to be his legacy. >> reporter: in the beginning it was all about teaching inner city youth about hockey but it evolved quickly into more, much more. and 3,000 kid, now participating a week. 1900 after school each day, and, tom brown has been with the snider program since 06. >> i react to this program not just involving hockey is, you know, vital and very important, you know, just progression of young peoples mind. >> we've involved. we have now added a very solid educational component designed to keep our kid on track for on time graduation. i guess you can say that hockey is just a hook to gain and hold the attention of these kid so we can teach them greater life lessons. >> reporter: this is casher archie in the program during his high school years. today, he is a a freshman at drexel university and coaching the young kid. >> i have been benefiting more from the program off ice then difficult on ice.

trying to figure out what is to blame for this nasty collision on route 37 in christiana tonight. a lifted pickup truck crashed in the nissan, at 8:00 o'clock near route one overpass. the driver of the sedan was rushed to christiana hospital in critical injuries. the passenger in the car was also hurt the but not as seriously. the truck driver refused medical treatment at the scene. the university of pennsylvania is trying to cope with the apparent suicide of an under graduate. this was the scene, this morning, well, first let us show you a picture of the 21 year-old olivia kong who was killed at 40th and market street septa station. police say that she jumped in front of the train and was struck and killed. kong was a student at penn's wharton school and a philadelphian and alumni of central high school. christie, tragedy hit the penn community tonight. report report that is absolutely correct, jim. just over my shoulder we will push into the heart of the campus where dozens of olivia kong's classmates are gathering here. you can see them in the distance. at one point there was a long line, processional of candles. some students say while this was devastating it was not that surprising saying that this has long been an issue here on campus. >> i kind of read it during my bio lab class and i was just shock. >> reporter: twenty-one year-old junior olivia kong was described as bright, well liked and successful. police say she jump topped her death in front of the septa train monday morning. >> i seen the people, saying there was someone under the train. >> the fact that somebody next to me in class is like i heard she jumped in front of the train. then everyone kind of nodded in a agreement. it is just very sad but it wasn't like oh, how could anyone ever do that because there have been so many of

police officers acquitted of police brutality, a jury found 31 year-old sean mcknight and 28 year-old kevin robinson not guilty in the beating of najee riveria. surveillance video captured the arrest during a traffic stop in 2013. prosecutors accused the officers of beating riveria without provocation but the defense argued that the police only used necessary force after riveria fled from them. riveria never testified at trial because he died in december, from an unrelated street the fight in kensington. verizon workers are asking can you hear us now? they are threatening to walk off the job on wednesday at 6:00 a.m. if no progress is made during a new contract. 40,000 employees from virginia to massachusetts are involved. cwa union officials say out sourcing of jobs, such as customer service call centers is the top unresolved issue. verizon says that the company has been the one trying to
