there. those were primarily students that were protesting against a stadium. hang on one second. they were protesting a new stadium that is proposed there and now they are protesting -- >> we are going to go ahead and take it back, because you have been commandeered by one of the protesters. there are people protesting the stadium at temple university. the proposed stadium there and protester rallying for a $15 minimum wage in the city of philadelphia and the state of pennsylvania. a day of rage, a group that has many causes, the groups have come together and one large group is moving south on north broad making their way to city

hall and this is having an impact on the traffic this afternoon and police say there have been some issues not skirmishes. we'll follow that of course and try to get back to sara. >> absolutely. this is happening in other cities across the country. the portion of people protesting for a higher minimum wage, many are adults and they support a family that are getting by on $9, $10, $11. $15 an hour is the wage they say they need to keep their family together. it's not just single focus on restaurants it's airports too. we are following breaking news in german town, where a woman in her 80s was shot and killd this afternoon. trish hartman is there learning more about the victims --

>> reporter: police are on the scene in german town, we'll show you the scene there. the white gated door 437 is where police are saying this happened. the crime scene unit came a couple of minutes ago and many family members are here talking to police. family members broke down outside of the victim's home on east cosgrove street in german town. she is identified as 80-year-old mary morton, homicide detectives are investigating her death. she was shot in the chest about 12:30 this afternoon. she spent much of her time caring for her sick husband who is in his 90s. neighbors could not believe she is gone.

years, prosecutors say that he forced a real estate agent into her own suv and sexually assaulted her while they drove around and crawford lost control of the vehicle and slammed into a tioga fruit stand killing williams and her children in 2014. crawford received 50 to 100 years. a woman that burned her neighbor's house down will spend 10 to 20 years behind bars. prosecutors say that she set fire to the home of ernie morris because she blamed him for her son's previous arrest. krup was found guilty of arson and learned her sentence today. a fire broke out at strawberry mansion, it happened on nicholas street. an 83-year-old man and his daughter and two grandchildren were all inside when the flames broke out.

the daughter woke everyone up just in time. a family member tells "action news" that the thick smoke made it hard for them to escape. >> it was devastating, they could not see getting out of the house. you cannot find your door you have been walking out for 50 years. so he made it down the steps and fell and my sister grabbed him and some miraculous way thank god they made it out safely. >> just in time too. investigators think the blaze was accidental and started in the basement. no word on the condition of the victims, but the flames completely destroyed that home. lucky to be alive there. >> thank you. time for a check of the accuweather forecast. meteorologist, cecily tynan live outside where all of us should spend at least sometime today. >> you need to take the broadcast out here, the whole set out here to our veranda. it's just gorgeous, weather keeps getting better and better

as we head through the weekend. bright blue skies and sunshine and temperatures notice 60s. yesterday we were stuck at 58 degrees, that is 5 degrees below normal. now more seasonable at 62, and richmond, virginia and roanoke. and satellite 6 along with action radar showing a broad area of high pressure essentially just sitting over us. that squeezes all the moisture out of the atmosphere and that is why we have the bright sunshine. the next 12 hours show though that it is a cool night with clear skies tonight and the light wind and temperatures are dropping down to 40 degrees in philadelphia by early tomorrow morning, but some areas close to the freezing point. we have a frost advisory for areas outside of philadelphia for overnight tonight and then i am tracking a winning weekend and it won't feel like april anymore. i am tracking june-like temperatures. >> thanks cecily. get this for the first time

lets bring you up to date on our breaking news story. we have a group of protesters staging a day of action on broad street. many heading from temple university. but two other groups have joined so three groups with different interests. one is protesting temple's plan to build a stadium and one protesting racial disparities and another group looking to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour. they are marching along spring garden street, by the philadelphia public school district headquarters. just to give you a reference points and they are marching to

city hall, not quite at their destination, from our vantage point they are marching peacefully. but you can see police presence along the way to keep folks safe and keep things moving along. and it hopefully it won't do much to slow down the rush hour as it kicks into gear. jefferson university hospital is making a push for national donate life month. they unveiled the threads of love quilt, it's on permanent display to honor those that donated. more than 3,000 people have received life saving donations at jeff and 700 people are on a waiting list there. wawa is celebrating a birth day.

philadelphia now. this began at temple university and they are marching south on north broad street making their way to city hall. they just crossed vine and getting closer to city hall. this is actually three separate protests that came together to form a large one. several hundred protesters on the ground for their causes and a heavy police presence out there. be warned that traffic will be impacted by the protest which shows no sign at this hour of slowing down any time soon. we learn more about the victim riding a scooter when he was hkilled in a hit and run crash. gray hall is live in port richmond where the investigation is ongoing. >> reporter: well monica, police spent most of the day at this home where they found the car in question, they took at least one person into custody but at this

point it's not clear if the person was the driver. >> family members released pictures of thomas dunbar and he was tragically killed while riding his scooter and police say that the driver kept going. >> the striking vehicle then drags this victim about 200 feet. >> investigators believe that this 2005 pontiac aztec was the vehicle involved in the hit and run. it was found parked in port richmond late last night not far from the accident scene. officers did not say who was driving but they are camped outside the home where the car was found. he says he was not involved in the fatal crash. >> my client has nothing to say, he does not understand why the police would detain him in his house. >> we are certain that the

the run right now after tearing through a woman's house overnight. philadelphia police say that three of them were waiting outside of this home on d street in kensington until the victim walked out and then they pushed her back inside and threatened her and pistol whipped a man in the home. they made off with cell phone, a laptop and several hundred in cash. and a crash caused traffic delays on i-95, police directed traffic on academy road. both cars are pretty banged up, one overturned and the other smashed in a construction sign on the shoulder. nobody was injured here. a basement fire forced people out of their home in north philadelphia. it started at 7:00 in a two story row home. everyone made it out safely and the red cross is helping the residents fine a place to go. the cause of the fire remains under investigation. a beautiful day and we have

the families of victims killed in the connecticut school shooting will be allowed to sue a gun company. a judge ruled the lawsuit can go forward against the company that made the rifle used to kill people at an elementary school. the gun is not protected because an automatic rifle is a military weapon. president obama kicked off the wounded warrior ride. he says the service does not end when they take their uniforms off. the riders will ride 60 miles during the four day adventure.

i'm starting to scoop the triple scoop and looking at the accuweather forecast. looking at the temperatures, 62 in philly who wants to hold my microphone while i scoop ice-cream. cape may is cool at 51 and 57 down in wildwood. as we look at the satellite and radar, high pressure north of lake eerie and ontario. really showing that very little has happened across the country with the large high pressure in control meaning lots of sunshine in our forecast, it's good ice-cream weather through the upcoming weekend. through tonight it's clear and chilly and there are areas of frost developing in the out lying suburbs. 40 for center city. and as we look at the coast there is large high pressure in control over the ohio and tennessee valley and a rim of

sara bloomquist is live at city hall with more of the details for us. >> reporter: rick and monica we have been walking with this crowd now for approaching two hours now, we are making the first circle around city hall. this began at 2:00 when students from temple university assembled at the bell tower there, their cause is protesting the proposed football stadium and they progressed to broad and cecil b. moore and joined by people advocating for a higher minimum wage of $15 an hour. that is what these people have joined the protest are advocating. and there are people supporting many causes, some against stop and frisk and some political people here for hillary clinton and bernie sanders. they are showing their political signs here as well. as they made their way down broad street, the streets on the sides have had to be
