there. those were primarily students that were protesting against a stadium. hang on one second. they were protesting a new stadium that is proposed there and now they are protesting -- >> we are going to go ahead and take it back, because you have been commandeered by one of the protesters. there are people protesting the stadium at temple university. the proposed stadium there and protester rallying for a $15 minimum wage in the city of philadelphia and the state of pennsylvania. a day of rage, a group that has many causes, the groups have come together and one large group is moving south on north broad making their way to city

hall and this is having an impact on the traffic this afternoon and police say there have been some issues not skirmishes. we'll follow that of course and try to get back to sara. >> absolutely. this is happening in other cities across the country. the portion of people protesting for a higher minimum wage, many are adults and they support a family that are getting by on $9, $10, $11. $15 an hour is the wage they say they need to keep their family together. it's not just single focus on restaurants it's airports too. we are following breaking news in german town, where a woman in her 80s was shot and killd this afternoon. trish hartman is there learning more about the victims --

>> reporter: police are on the scene in german town, we'll show you the scene there. the white gated door 437 is where police are saying this happened. the crime scene unit came a couple of minutes ago and many family members are here talking to police. family members broke down outside of the victim's home on east cosgrove street in german town. she is identified as 80-year-old mary morton, homicide detectives are investigating her death. she was shot in the chest about 12:30 this afternoon. she spent much of her time caring for her sick husband who is in his 90s. neighbors could not believe she is gone.

years, prosecutors say that he forced a real estate agent into her own suv and sexually assaulted her while they drove around and crawford lost control of the vehicle and slammed into a tioga fruit stand killing williams and her children in 2014. crawford received 50 to 100 years. a woman that burned her neighbor's house down will spend 10 to 20 years behind bars. prosecutors say that she set fire to the home of ernie morris because she blamed him for her son's previous arrest. krup was found guilty of arson and learned her sentence today. a fire broke out at strawberry mansion, it happened on nicholas street. an 83-year-old man and his daughter and two grandchildren were all inside when the flames broke out.

the daughter woke everyone up just in time. a family member tells "action news" that the thick smoke made it hard for them to escape. >> it was devastating, they could not see getting out of the house. you cannot find your door you have been walking out for 50 years. so he made it down the steps and fell and my sister grabbed him and some miraculous way thank god they made it out safely. >> just in time too. investigators think the blaze was accidental and started in the basement. no word on the condition of the victims, but the flames completely destroyed that home. lucky to be alive there. >> thank you. time for a check of the accuweather forecast. meteorologist, cecily tynan live outside where all of us should spend at least sometime today. >> you need to take the broadcast out here, the whole set out here to our veranda. it's just gorgeous, weather keeps getting better and better

city hall, not quite at their destination, from our vantage point they are marching peacefully. but you can see police presence along the way to keep folks safe and keep things moving along. and it hopefully it won't do much to slow down the rush hour as it kicks into gear. jefferson university hospital is making a push for national donate life month. they unveiled the threads of love quilt, it's on permanent display to honor those that donated. more than 3,000 people have received life saving donations at jeff and 700 people are on a waiting list there. wawa is celebrating a birth day.

philadelphia now. this began at temple university and they are marching south on north broad street making their way to city hall. they just crossed vine and getting closer to city hall. this is actually three separate protests that came together to form a large one. several hundred protesters on the ground for their causes and a heavy police presence out there. be warned that traffic will be impacted by the protest which shows no sign at this hour of slowing down any time soon. we learn more about the victim riding a scooter when he was hkilled in a hit and run crash. gray hall is live in port richmond where the investigation is ongoing. >> reporter: well monica, police spent most of the day at this home where they found the car in question, they took at least one person into custody but at this

point it's not clear if the person was the driver. >> family members released pictures of thomas dunbar and he was tragically killed while riding his scooter and police say that the driver kept going. >> the striking vehicle then drags this victim about 200 feet. >> investigators believe that this 2005 pontiac aztec was the vehicle involved in the hit and run. it was found parked in port richmond late last night not far from the accident scene. officers did not say who was driving but they are camped outside the home where the car was found. he says he was not involved in the fatal crash. >> my client has nothing to say, he does not understand why the police would detain him in his house. >> we are certain that the

zrifer of the striking vehicle knew what he did. witnesses told police that dunbar was on his scooter and made a right turn and that was when he was hit. >> when the body was finally shaken free of the striking vehicle, the vehicle continued to leave the scene of the accident. >> it's a heart breaking story and the family is grieving the loss of a loved one. >> if there is injuries or cases of fatalities, if the vehicles are registered legally and the operator remains on the scene and cooperates with the investigation there may be absolutely no charges. >> police are still searching for the driver and as for the suv involved in this fatal hit and run, police are processing the vehicle and looking for dna and fingerprints. gray hall, channel 6 "action news." >> thank you. armed robbers are still on

the run right now after tearing through a woman's house overnight. philadelphia police say that three of them were waiting outside of this home on d street in kensington until the victim walked out and then they pushed her back inside and threatened her and pistol whipped a man in the home. they made off with cell phone, a laptop and several hundred in cash. and a crash caused traffic delays on i-95, police directed traffic on academy road. both cars are pretty banged up, one overturned and the other smashed in a construction sign on the shoulder. nobody was injured here. a basement fire forced people out of their home in north philadelphia. it started at 7:00 in a two story row home. everyone made it out safely and the red cross is helping the residents fine a place to go. the cause of the fire remains under investigation. a beautiful day and we have
