sara bloomquist is live at city hall with more of the details for us. >> reporter: rick and monica we have been walking with this crowd now for approaching two hours now, we are making the first circle around city hall. this began at 2:00 when students from temple university assembled at the bell tower there, their cause is protesting the proposed football stadium and they progressed to broad and cecil b. moore and joined by people advocating for a higher minimum wage of $15 an hour. that is what these people have joined the protest are advocating. and there are people supporting many causes, some against stop and frisk and some political people here for hillary clinton and bernie sanders. they are showing their political signs here as well. as they made their way down broad street, the streets on the sides have had to be blocked.

this has really been quite a traffic situation in center city. all wait from temple's campus to city hall. the roads have been blocked here by the people standing here around city hall, now there say large police presence, we can show you here, a huge police presence, following at a distance. allowing the protesters to exercise their first amendment rights, you can see the bike officers they are just following them along as they carry out this protest down broad street. again, this has been going on since about 2:00 this afternoon. they made their way all the way down broad here to city hall and there is no telling when this will be over, they may not seen stay here, they could progress to other parts of the city. it's a fluid situation and we are here marching right along with them. we'll keep you updated. live at city hall, i'm sara

trying to track down a gunman after an 80-year-old woman was found shot in a home in german town. the shooting happened at 12:30 in the afternoon along east cosgrove street. the police found the woman inside found shot twice in the chest. trish hartman will have more on the investigation tonight at 6:00. now to the race for the white house, hillary clinton and bernie sanders face off in a crucial debate. the first showdown in more than a month. and follows days of intense campaigning in new york state. clinton a former senator and sanders a new york native are hoping to pull out a win next tuesday in the primary. meantime, donald trump is coming under fire for his controversial comment at a pittsburgh rally. yesterday he asked quote, are we bringing back joe paterno, he

happened after midnight. he was just doing his job patrolling the same area he has worked for 11 years and was assisting another officer with her traffic stop. >> as he was leaning in the car instructing her how to get the audio on he was shot in the back. four of the bullets lodged in his body. >> i heard a lot of gunshots. >> people in the area were not surprised to hear the gunshots. >> we hear them every night here. >> he went to the hospital with the four bullets still lodged in his body. >> he is a strong fighter and he has been through a situation like this before on duty and fortunately he made it out on that one and i know he will make it out on this one too. >> police say that they have a person of interest in custody, and that the injured deputy was wearing his bulletproof vest

we want to go back to our top story tonight. the quickly growing group of protesters blocking traffic in center city. we are looking live from sky 6 hd, the protesters have converged and moved away from city hall and are at broad and arch streets, you can see that police are out in force trying to survey exactly what is going on and as we told you all day, this is a convergence of groups rallying for different causes but the goal is the same having their voices heard on this national day of action. no word of any arrests but a large protest blocking broad street and making traffic a big mess for people trying to head home in the city. columbia is the latest country to report cases of a birth defect linked to the zika virus. ali gorman is live with more

details. >> reporter: this comes one day after the cdc confirm that zika virus is the cause of some cases of a serious birth defect. columbia officials are reporting 33 cases and two are confirmed to have been caused by zika and another 15 are still being studied. and health experts have been tracking this so far the numbers are not out of the ordinary, the hope is there won't be a surge in cases like what was seen in brazil when the zika virus rapidly spread there. and a study that sat in a basement for decades is the latest to question saturated fat. they compared people that ate a lot of saturated fat like meat, and others that ate things like margarine. they lowered their cholesterol but it not see fewer deaths due

the mcdonald's off to the left side there. protesters blocking both directions of traffic, the police are out here and we saw an ambulance go by but no injuries reported at this point with these protests. north broad street stay as far as you can away. we have detours on different routes and the vine street expressway is blocking the ramp from the eastbound side of broad to keep people away from the mess. police are out here and they don't have the ramp on the westbound side of broad blocked off it's a mess on 95 southbound by the walt whitman bridge and that is gone and northbound heavy by pens landing and the overturned military vehicle southbound approaching 8 a, just a couple of lanes of the truck lane is still blocked. so traffic is getting by.
