walter perez channel 6 "action news." thank four that report. in other news philadelphia police are searching for the gunman who shot a philadelphia police officer last night. 24-year-old officer james mccullough fired back after being wounded. the shooting happened at 59th and market. a busy area along the market frankford line in west philadelphia. "action news" reporter, annie mccormick has been following the story all morning long live at penn presbyterian hospital where the officer is being treated this afternoon. >> reporter: the officer is expected to be released sometime today. we are told he has been surrounded by his family and many city leaders and colleagues have been in and out of here. at this hour, police are looking for the gunman. it started with a crime that turned into another crime and left the officer shot.

it started at salford and market before 9:00 p.m. two men were stealing her dodge durango. she flagged down two district policemen, james mccullough jumped out and tackled one of the men and a shot went off, he was shot in the leg. he was bleeding heavily he managed to fire off a few shots. he actually on his own put a tourniquet around his leg during that time. both men did take off. we are told by sources, though, that one of the men from the dodge durango, not the alleged shooter ran toward a septa subway stop it was down there that he was apprehended by another man that was able to hold him for police. this is kind of a convoluted story, even the woman was the

one who saw him steal the durango, there was a crime committed where a man was robbed of his keys of the ford. they were trying to use the keys on the dodge durango. that's when that unfolded. police kept the man chased into the subway stop into custody. he is in custody at this time. they are looking for the gunman. at this hour we do not have word on a suspect description. mccullough was taken to penn presbyterian hospital in stable condition. shot in the thigh. we are told he has a couple of more tests today, but expected to be released. back out here live, he is 24 years old, he has been on the force for two years and has a 2-year-old girl and fiance and mom and they have been at his side all night and all morning. annie mccormick channel 6 "action news." back to you. for the latest on the breaking news story follow us on

manslaughter. despite previous reports police say a 5-year-old sibling had nothing to do with the shooting. we received an update on a tractor-trailer accident that caused a mess in mercer county, new jersey. the big rig overturned in lauren township during the morning rush. the wreck happened where 295 northbound and i-95 southbound connect. crews spent the morning picking up the bricks and clearing the wreckage. minutes ago we learned that it is clear and the road is open the driver was taken to the hospital, no word on a condition. the action cam was in newark, delaware, as firefighters responded to a crash involving a school bus. the accident happened on old baltimore pike and christiana farms place. an 86-year-old man was pulled out of the overturned car. he was transported to christiana hospital with head and chest injuries. the immigration debate is
