pull his weapon. the 17 hour manhunt for police shooting suspect scott griffin ended here on the 1200 block of alden. police say he was armed with a gunny gun but arrested without incident by undercover narcotics officers. >> we're not sure if it's the weapon. we believe that it is but we have to wait for ballistics. >> reporter: the shooting happened just before 9 p.m. sunday. police say griffin carjacked a woman's dodge durango at 59 and and market. the woman flagged down officer james mccullough and his partner. >> when the shooting suspect first gets out the vehicle, there's a slight wrestling, a tussling right then and there and then the suspect starts to take off. officer mccullough starts to chase him. at that point he turns, he shoots and he shoots him at one time in the leg. >> reporter: mccullough managed to fire several shots but none hit the 23-year-old suspect. mccullough made a tourniquet as fellow officers rushed him to a hospital. police say the two suspects

robbed another man moments before their encounter with police. >> the nonshooting suspect fled towards the el station at 60th and market. he actually ran past the first individual that he had robbed and his friends who caught up with him physically subdued him until the police came and arrested him. >> reporter: mccullough shown here on his facebook page is a two year veteran of the force a father of young child expected to be married soon and commissioner richard ross says a testament to the brave men and women in blue. >> thankfully he's going to be okay and just to echo something that captain clark great coordination on behalf of all the men and women out there in west philadelphia last night. and police tell me griffin has 14 prior arrests. he's now facing at tell meed murder, robbery and other related charges. i'm live outside of police headquarters, chad pradelli channel6 "action news." >> chad, thank you.

this is the second philadelphia police officer shot in the line of duty this year from the 18th district. back in january officer jessie hartnett was ambushed inside his police cruiser. now the suspect in that case edward archer is still awaiting trial. hartnett is recovering from his injuries but as we showed you right here, he got engaged last week when he proposed to his girlfriend after throwing out the first pitch before the phillies home opener. a happy moment there. our coverage of the shooting of officer mccullough continues on 6abc.com with the latest on that investigation. a photo gallery of images from the scene and videos including that dramatic radio call from the wounded officer's partner. >> we've got some breaking news at 4 o'clock. we take you live now to trenton, new jersey, chopper 6hd flying over the scene of what is being described as an auto-pedestrian accident. you can see the response here that's happening, this taking place at route one twin and lalor street again in trenton.

trenton police are working this particular scene, this auto-pedestrian accident happening about a half hour ago at 3:30. we'll keep our eyes on this and as we get more we'll bring it to you. a portion of the street has been blocked off as police investigate an auto-pedestrian accident in trenton, new jersey. meantime philadelphia police say a man in kensington accidentally shot and killed his four-year-old daughter but then tried to blame it on one of his other children. ly 30-year-old maurice phillips is now facing a list of charges including third degree murder. police say he was -- he has couldn't felsd to waving a gun t to waving a gun around. phils lips tried to shift the blame to his five-year-old. first they say he hit her out of punishment and didn't stop there. >> he took blood and actually wiped it on her shirt to try

fell on top of his vehicle as he was traveling down the 7300 block of mccallum street. both paul and his wife say it happened so fast there was really no time to react. >> i don't remember whether i heard the crack but i saw in front of -- the tree was already falling so i thought it seemed like it was suspended horizontally. >> my husband saw it coming but it was so close that there was no way that he could stop and it hit us. to think that that hit us and we lived. >> reporter: the fact of the matter is they didn't just walk away from this incident they walked away with only a few scratches. paul says his car was ruined so he certainly doesn't feel lucky but he is full al wear that this order -- fully aware this ordeal could have ended worse. >> mashed in the windshield. i'm sure if it had been a foot or so farther back we would have a different outcome. >> the tree did not hit us. it's a miracle.

schuylkill expressway westbound. we broke into programming with chopper6 during the 2 o'clock hour and you saw the awful scene here near montgomery drive. everything with that accident has cleared up but it's still given us heavy delays this afternoon on the westbound schuylkill still back here onto the westbound side of the vine but as you can see that delay is starting to thin. on the eastbound side of the vine same is not true. the delay just starting to build between the schuylkill and 95 and while we're in this neck of the woods let me mention to you 11 o'clock tonight the vine will close four nights this week it's shutting down for construction as they put some of those new beams into place so those closures were postponed from last week but they will happen this week. meanwhile in chester county on the route one oxford bypass getting word of a crash in the southbound lanes near 841. speeds just in the 30's approaching that accident scene. in bucks county there's a wreck on 309 northbound side approaching souderton involving a motorcycle so the emergency crews are converging on that scene as well and as we told you just a bit ago they're out there in trenton with the accident involving

they're trying to help survivors as they deal with this destruction. in addition to doctors and search crews international aid workers are also working to set up plants to make sure people have clean water to drink. meanwhile aftershocks in japan are delaying rescue efforts after a pair of earthquakes in that country. at least 42 people are dead, more than a thousand others are hurt. the first quake happened thursday. then there was a second one on saturday. about 180,000 people have been evacuated to shelters. in addition to aftershocks, rescue workers have been dealing with bad weather and the threat of landslides. >> the presidential candidates are making one last push across the state of new york before tomorrow's crucial primary. on the republican side polls show donald trump with a huge lead over ted ted and john kasich. in fact, almost every poll predicts trump will take in more than 50 percent of the republican vote there. for the democrats hillary clinton and bernie sanders are looking to pounce on their ties to new york. polls slow clinton a former

adam joseph standing by. hey adam. >> everyone along the east coast back to the ohio valley as strong high pressure remains in control and we take a live look right now you can see a couple folks walking along the water's edge in cape play live on sky since. looks beautiful from this vantage point but they probable have at least a light jacket on because at the shore like this weekend there's that cool wind can coming in off the water so right now it's only 63 degrees in cape may. at the atlantic city airport 10 miles inland you do go into the lower 70's. beach haven in the 60's. you can see that easterly wind and sea breeze front setting up in western parts of atlantic county and southern parts of burlington county while you go farther inland we are right around 80 degrees or better. right now in wilmington 82, allentown 81 and then the upper 70's north and west where we have a northwesterly wind setting into those northwest suburbs. so, we did hit 80 so far in philadelphia today. this marks the fourth time this year we've hit 80 degrees in philadelphia. it's rare to have this many days but not uncommon up to

this point marchth ninth and tenth if you remember those back to back 82-degree days and the first day of this month we hit 80 and we duplicate that on this day. as we look at high pressure in control across the ohio valley, tennessee valley midatlantic region this high has been dominant and it's starting to break down a little bit. there was a front to the north here. you see those clouds and showers slowly working in from the north so a front is going to swing through here early tomorrow morning. but it's not going to come with any precipitation. so, it's fairly comfortable overnight tonight. 56 philadelphia, 52 in wilmington, 51 in allentown, 50's along the shore with a clear sky above. we'll watch high clouds 8 o'clock tomorrow morning with the front nearly a town and trenton with temperatures already at 61 philadelphia, 62 in wilmington. there you see those high clouds streaming to the south as the front progresses around lunchtime with temps in the mid and upper 60's across much of the area. once again topping off in the 70's for most locations especially south of

>> from our delaware news room today a plan in his 80's had to be rescued after crashing into a school bus this morning. it happened just before 7:00 a.m. at old baltimore pike and christiana farms place in newark. police say the bus and the car collided flipping the car onto its roof. rescue workers cut the 86-year-old driver out of the wreckage and took him to the hospital. he is in serious condition. the students on the bus were from kuumba academy. none of them was injured. truck overturned in mercer county this morning and caused big delays on two major highways. you can see that vehicle lost its load of bricks all over there roadway. it happened right at the merger of 295 north and 95 south. both roads were backed up as crews cleaned up. the driver went to the hospital but we're still trying to find out how badly he or she was wounded. >> philadelphia mayor jim kenney checked in on people getting a checkout. he stopped by the kensington health and science academy community fair. the fair gives students and families a chance to get

at the hands of her own father. she was shot to death this weekend inside her kensington home. "action news" reporter vernon odom live near the scene with the latest developments in this disturbing story. vern. >> reporter: good evening, brian. we frequently as most everyone knows we have to report on tragedy, the result of incredible stupidity but this kensington story is one of industrial strength recklessness. this is 30-year-old maurice phillips charged with the murder of his four-year-old daughter inside their nome kensington on saturday afternoon. police say tahirah phillips was inside watching tv with six siblings ranging in age from 13 years to seven months old when phillips the biological father of five of them including tahirah came in and started playing with his gun like it was a toy. >> once inside of the room he removed his gun from the holster and started carelessly and recklessly waving and pointing the gun around in the room. during this time the gun

discharged one time striking his daughter in the back of the head killing her instandly. >instantly. >> reporter: phillips spread blood on a five-year-old sister of tahirah in an effort to blame her for the shooting. he changed clothes and fled the scene. >> several hours later he did turn himself in to 24th police district. he was ultimately transported to the homicide unit where he gave a statement confessing to the shooting. >> reporter: this section of kensington is known as the bad lands notorious for many years. dope dealers on many corners, the smell of marijuana all down the block. most neighbors are afraid to talk to reporters about the dangers here but this open disgust about this latest act of deadly violence. >> happened here, the father is crazy. >> it's a stupid idiotic act. just law completely reckless in doing this and unfortunately a four-year-old

charged with three counts of murder and related offenses. the victims were all shot in the head early sunday morning insides of a home on east westemoreland street. when officers arrived, dickson reportedly barricaded himself inside for two hours. a fourth victim is being treated at temple hospital. >> "action news" has new details about the deadly amtrak crash in chester earlier this month. the ntsb released its preliminary report today saying the back low on the tracks was doing work during a planned period. it's still unclear if the track was closed during the exact time of that april 3rd crash. a worker in the backhoe an supervisor were killed. the report also says the engineer did use the emergency brakes as soon as he saw something. the full investigation will take months to complete. >> a fast moving fire torched a home in upper darby early this morning. the action cam was on the scene along the 100 block of ardmore avenue as firefighters worked to put out the hot spots. the fire broke out around 2:15

berks county. but as we slide to the south you can see a big difference from the western part of southern new jersey to the shore line. we're only in the low 60's in fact for cape may county, 66 in the boardwalk, 69 in surf city, 72 woodbine with those easterly winds but once you hit hammonton 15 land that's where you bump up to the 70's and 80's. the entire state of delaware in the low 80's. high pressure is to our west. it's weakening a little bit bringing flooding rains from dallas texas, the eastern part of texas, houston into the northern plains. we catch that break but there's a front to our north and this is going swing through here tomorrow and really only bring us a couple of clouds and a wind shift more from the northeast as opposed from the northwest. so, for the phillies this evening 7:05 mostly clear for the first pitch at 76 degrees. by the ninth inning still very pleasant around 67 and throughout the remainder of the overnight hours it stays clear overall and very

comfortable, 42 in those outlying suburbs, 56 degrees for center city and then that front sinks to the south here on tuesday as new high pressure comes in from can today. it's a bit breezy tomorrow out of the north-northwesterly direction even times northeast at 75 degrees so we're calling it a touch cooler but that's still well above average. then that high will settle in, relax the wind on wednesday with full sunshine, seasonable temperatures right around 69 degrees as we await a system to the west. in fact today 0 percent chance of rain. we'll mimic that tomorrow, wednesday, thursday but it bounces up here on friday as we could see around a quarter of an inch in many locations. a few high clouds streaming through tomorrow, very breezy with a warm high of 75 degrees. wall to wall sunshine, less wind and a bit cooler of 69 but then we bounce back into the 70's on thursday, morning sun giving way to increasing

>> ♪ >> "action news." delaware valley's leading news program. with jaime apody, meteorologist cecily tynan, rick williams and monica malpass. >> ♪ >> it is 5 o'clock and we're following developing news out of trenton tonight. a crossing guard was killed in a deadly accident just feet from a school. happened just about 90 minutes ago. we first showed you pictures of the scene from chopper6 hd on "action news" at 4:00 little bit earlier. >> in the past hour new jersey correspondent nora muchanic arrived at that scene near route 29 and lalor street to get more details. >> reporter: monica, rick, this is a very busy intersection in town and we have a grim scene right now, an active scene. let's go to more of those pictures from chopper6 hd it happened around 3:30 this

afternoon. witnesses are telling us it was one of the crossing guards who worked at this intersection who was killed. some of them saw it happen. one of the drivers involved in the accident described what happened. she says her car was clipped by that red chevy pickup truck that apparently hit the crossing guard. here's what she and the others in the area are telling us. >> lalor street making a left 'cause i had the green light. the car was coming 29, the red truck coming down route 29. it was going hit me, speeding. i put my foot on the gas and he hit the back of my car. >> hit that car and kept going. went so far. >> just flying down the stree street. no brakes. oh, my god it was terrible. >> the first thing i heard was that loud noise, a big bang and it sounded like a truck accident and when i ran around i noticed that the red
