afternoon. witnesses are telling us it was one of the crossing guards who worked at this intersection who was killed. some of them saw it happen. one of the drivers involved in the accident described what happened. she says her car was clipped by that red chevy pickup truck that apparently hit the crossing guard. here's what she and the others in the area are telling us. >> lalor street making a left 'cause i had the green light. the car was coming 29, the red truck coming down route 29. it was going hit me, speeding. i put my foot on the gas and he hit the back of my car. >> hit that car and kept going. went so far. >> just flying down the stree street. no brakes. oh, my god it was terrible. >> the first thing i heard was that loud noise, a big bang and it sounded like a truck accident and when i ran around i noticed that the red truck

hit him must have knocked him like 200 feet. i had just got done talking to him. he ended up way down there. >> reporter: now, there is a heavy police presence here. trenton police, sheriff's officers, state police, prosecutor's office. the victim was on the ground lying next to that red pickup truck. it was just removed just a couple minutes ago. sadly you can see one of those red stop sign stop signs. route 29 is major road out of town for thousands of state workers. this section of 129 north of lalor street is still closed right now while the investigation continues. and as we look back live on the scene right now, again, a crossing guard was killed here in trenton this afternoon. witnesses tell us that the driver of that red truck was put in the back of one of the police cars here at the scene. and that is the latest from trenton here at the scene right now, i'm nora muchanic. now back to you.

>> dangerous individual obviously. we're very happy to get him off the streets as quickly as we did. >> you heard it. right now a gunman is in can you do after a philadelphia police officer was slot in the line of duty last night and tonight we're learning more about the alleged shooter and his accomplice and the wild scene that led up to their capture. we have more now on this story for you from west philadelphia shooting that center an officer to the hospital. >> "action news" reporter sarah bloomquist is lie outside of penn presbyterian where that officer is recovering this evening. sarah. >> reporter: monica and rick, 24-year-old officer james mccullough is said to be resting comfortably here at penn presbyterian tonight. the commissioner said today he is understandably exhausted. he was up all night and had many, many visitors but the good news, he will be fine. meantime the young man accused of shooting him is in police custody along with an accomplice. all day fellow officers came to visit officer james

mccullough at penn presbyterian where he is recovering from a gunshot wound to the leg. at 1:00 this afternoon here in the 1200 block of alden in west philadelphia, police arrested 23-year-old scott griffin, the man accused of shooting him. >> undercover narcotics officers actually saw him. they approached him, took him into can you do and he actually has a weapon on him. >> reporter: this unfolded last night before 9 o'clock. meals say two suspects, one of them griffin robbed a man in the 5900 block of market street. during robbery the pair took the keys to the victim's ford expedition. at market the suspects tried to drive off in a dodge durango mistaking it for the ford. a woman saw the two men in her durango and flagged on officer mccullough who chased one suspect identified as samir coyett but lost him. >> he actually ran past the first individual he robbed and his friends who caught up with him physically subdued him until the police came and

arrested him. >> reporter: back at market officer mccullough got into a confrontation with the second suspect. >> there's a slight wrestling, tussling right then and there and then the suspect starts to take you have. officer mccullough starts to chase him. at that point he turns, he shoots and he shoots him one time in the leg. >> reporter: officer mccullough applied his own tourniquet and his partner rushed him to the hospital. the 18th district officer joined the force in 2014. this is him playing rugby with a team in northeast philadelphia. he has a fiancé an two-year-old daughter. >> we're just happy that officer mccullough is going to recover and he's going to be okay but his partner responded the way he was supposed to as well as all the men and women out there and they continue to make us proud. >> reporter: now, the suspected gunman scott griffin has 14 prior arrest right now the district attorney is working to approve charges against both young men who are now in can you do. police public affairs told "action news" just a short time ago that officer mccullough is expected to

summer. we are warming things up. saturday 67 degrees. yesterday 73. today so far 81 degrees which is 16 degrees above the average high for this time of the year so it feels like the middle of june but there is a big change with the temperatures inland versus along the shore. well, philadelphia 81, wilmington and reading 80, allentown 82. down the shore, though, you got the winds off the ocean. the ocean temperatures only 53 degrees so that has a big impact on the air temperatures. temperatures on the beaches generally just in the low to mid 60's. now, satellite6 along with action radar showing we are still cloud free, but if you look over northern new york state you can see some clouds beginning to move in. that's with a back door cold front that will move through tomorrow and will bring us slightly cooler air. temperatures still above normal but this is what to expect. again, any other as warm tomorrow as today. and i know some people think this is just too warm too soon. even cooler on wednesday, and i am tracking the chance of

some showers late in the week after nine days of dry weather. i'll talk more about that coming up in the full accuweather forecast. rick. >> all right, cecily thank you. at the big board now with the major flooding that's put most of the houston area under water tonight. right now officials in texas are trying the figure out if two, two, deaths there are actually storm related. officials say more than a foot of rain fell in and around houston last night and it appears that the worst of the storm may have passed. but that rain triggered flooding that closed schools, brought air traffic to a halt and left people stranded on their roofs. others were forced to abandon their cars in the flood waters including one man helped by a reporter from our sister station in houston. >> got to get out. >> what value i do. >> swim. >> what? >> swim. >> swim. >> what shall i do. >> leave the car. swim. >> are you okay, sir. >> i'm okay. >> i'm soak oak. >> the driver said he didn't think the flood waters were deep enough to sink his car.

there have been similar rescues around houston today and reporter alicia rivas from our sister station has more. >> here in houston we can show you one of more than a dozen bayous that are right at or overflowing their banks right now. the water moving swiftly after what's being called a historic rain event here in the city which started in the overnight hours. right over here you can see as the water comes up over the bank it seeps over out onto the streets and then into the homes that we can't even get to at this point but we do know that hundreds of water rescues have happened since the overnight hours throughout the morning and throughout the day today. also as we mentioned, about a hundred subdivisions affectd in this area with houses that are flooded. but right now we are getting just a break from the rain. we are expecting more rain tonight. the tally still not done yet on how many homes have been flooded and how many water

the temperature in philadelphia 81 degrees currently. this is the fourth time this year we've hit the 80's. the dewpoint, though, extremely low. 28 degrees. that's why we have a bright blue skies. really can't even get any clouds to form with a dewpoint that low. winds generally out of the west very light at 3 miles an hour. pressure is 30.12-inches and falling and that ocean temperature 53 degrees and again that does have a big influence on the temperatures right along the beach. cape may currently it's now dropped down to 62 degrees. the atlantic city airport in pomona which is 9 miles inland 70 and you can see how that sea breeze front reaches about millville. 75 degrees there. dover 74. but west we're looking at temperatures hovering right around 80. 80 in wilmington, 79 in trenton, allentown 82 and reading currently 80 degrees with full sunshine. satellite6 along with action radar showing we still had high pressure in control but this ridge is beginning to break down. so, what this will do, it will

allow a cold front to sneak in through the back door from the north. that's why it's called a back door cold front. there are some showers over canada but once this front gets a little bit farther to the south it will be moisture stabbed so this essentially will just bring us some clouds and it will bring us cooler air tomorrow but temperatures still above normal. tonight lots of stars, a cool comfortable night. philadelphia 56. allentown 51. wilmington 52. cape may 52 and trenton also 52 degrees. popular number. future tracker showing as we head through the day we'll see some clouds. allentown 59 degrees at 8 o'clock with that band of clouds but look at what happens as we led into the afternoon -- as we head into the afternoon, generally we'll be in the 70's. the problem though with this dry forecast plenty of pollen in the air. the pollen forecast will remain high. basically right through the end of the week even with the possibility of some showers on friday. it's not going to be enough to

>> ♪ >> "action news" continues with meteorologist adam joseph, jaime apody, rick williams and monica malpass. >> ♪ >> hello again. meteorologist what's happening on "action news" monday night. a suspect is gunned down during a shootout with vineland police. but the man's family says officers got it all wrong and now they want justice. two teens sen to the hospital following this crash. what authorities say happened just before the car flipped on its side. the presidential candidates hit the empire state with force as new york voters get ready to head to the polls tomorrow. >> now the details. the family of a man killed by vineland police is demanding justice from what they say is a case of mistaken identity. it happened early yesterday morning in the area of seventh

and cherry. officers say they exchanged gunfire with two robbery suspects, one identified as richard bard. bard was shot and killed. his family says authorities got the wrong guy. john rawlins live in vineland live more. >> reporter: a man leaves a small restaurant gets on his bike and he's riding for home. he doesn't make it but about a half block down this street when he's assaulted by two men pistol whipped. at some point those assailants flee. the short time later there is a police-involved shooting a few blocks away. now the police maintain one man is killed in that shooting by the way and police maintain that the two incidents are linked. they say that the assailants were the same men. the family of the dead man questions that. tony and martin operate the restaurant in vineland. ton knee survived a violent attack sunday. he and a good friend were closing up after working late

on kitchen equipment. the friend departed first riding a bike. the two others departed in tony's truck. there were screams. two assailants began beating the end. >> they got him over there. put him the bike in the floor and start beating him because they want his wallet. he didn't want to give it to him. two males beating him put a gun in the head and he got all messed up in the face, he got holes in the head, eyes swollen. >> reporter: tony and the employee went to help. tony calls 911, shots are fired at the truck. >> they see him that he was taken -- using the phone and they stand up from the floor then left running and they shoot the truck and left. police arrive at the scene near seven and and cherry. almond and east of a three and a half blocks away more gunfire involving police and two men authorities call the suspected assailants. one escapes the other identified as richard bard is

fatally injured. authorities claim a firearm was found in the immediate vicinity of bard. his family reject he had anything to do with the attack. they have harsh words for the police. >> you shot my brother in the head. >> reporter: police say he shot at them first. >> of course they going to say that. moy brother wasn't like that. he's not that dumb really. why would you shoot at the police? police going to shoot back and kill you. >> reporter: investigation by the cumberland county prosecutor's office continues. it maintains that one of the two assailants is still at large. the man who was mugged is hospitalized and he's now out of the hospital and recuperating at home. live in vineland, john rawlins channel6 "action news. >> thank you. detectives identify the suspect in a triple murder over the weekend in kensington. one of the victims was the suspect's brother. that suspect is identified as 46-year-old james dickson. authorities i was dickson shot a woman and two men inside of a home on east westemoreland

street and refused to come out for two hours. a fourth person was also hit by gunfire but managed to get out of the home. he's in critical condition. dickson was taken into can you do. the motive for the shooting is not known. from our delaware news room two teens recovering after this crash along smith bridge road in new castle county. investigators say the driver was going south in the 1000 block lost control hit a boulder and then a tree and then flipped over. a 17-year-old and 16-year-old were taken to the hospital for treatment. they are expected to be okay. >> delaware county investigators trying to determine the cause of a fast moving house fire. this was the scene in the 100 block of ardmore avenue about 2:00 a.m. firefighters arrived, they quickly called for backup and attacked the flames from all sides. luckily no one was hurt. the home, though, was destroyed. a tractor-trailer driver puts his rig along 295 in mercer county new jersey. chopper6 overhead in the

southbound lanes near lawrence township. that rig was hauling bricks when it overturned. the driver was rushed to the hospital for treatment. traffic backed up for several miles until police cleared the scene. and this is 49-year-old kimberly parker of laurel delaware. parker a teacher in there laurel school district pleaded guilty to stealing $2,500 from laurel elementary. she also stole more than $36,000 from the laurel education association. she will be sentenced in june. >> politics tonight, the focus of the 2016 presidential campaign is on new york state this evening. tomorrow voters in the empire state will led to the polls for the primary. all five remaining candidates spender time in new york today hoping to shore up last minutes support. let's take a look at the final polls before the new york primary tomorrow. compiled by real clear politics.com. among the republicans donald trump is retaining his double digit lead in the contest. he holds a 53 percent margin of the votes so far. john kasich comes in with

look at our forecast. did you have lunch outside. >> i didn't. >> i was going to take you to lunch. >> how about tomorrow. >> as we look at double scan live radar crystal clear sky out there. a few clouds entering the forecast tomorrow as a cold front comes through but it is not going to bring us any sort of rain. 82 degrees officially today in philadelphia. just before the 4 o'clock hour. soaring well over that normal of 65 degrees. the record in fact for the day 94 degrees set back in 1976 and even this morning on the warmer than average side where we started at 47 degrees. many locations still in the 80's including allentown reading wilmington even the poconos at 80 degrees this afternoon. but much cooler with the wind coming in off of the water that easterly flow with the ocean at just 53 degrees. it's only 61 in cape may, skier on the boardwalk in atlantic city and 67 in beach haven but that's going to change tomorrow with winds coming in more out of the

north-northwesterly direction creating a lands breeze. high pressure has been in control. you can kind of see that void in any cloud cover but notice they're starting to collapse in the clouds as the high's beginning to weaken. there's a front up to their north that will slide through early tomorrow morning. it will come through dry with just a couple of clouds and all of the flooding rains in texas and also the nation's heartland, that is beginning to fall apart and eventually will push through here at the end of the week but for tonight it's mostly clear and comfortable. 42 suburbs, 56 degrees for center city with winds switching out of the northwesterly direction. up in the lehigh valley tomorrow we're not going to hit 80, 82 degrees but we'll drop it by 10 degrees or so. so it's a little bit cooler but still very nice. any morning clouds with the front will give way to sunshine through much of the day. in philadelphia itself tomorrow in center city any morning clouds giving way to sun in the afternoon. slightly cooler but still well above normal of 75 degrees and no more 60's at the shore tomorrow. we're back up to around 70 degrees with that land

breeze and a mixture of some high clouds and sunshine so overall a really nice day no matter what location you're at tomorrow as a cold front sinks to the south and new high pressure comes in from the north. this high will settle in here on wednesday bringing us lots of wall to wall sunshine. tomorrow's going to be very breezy. less wind coming in on wednesday. temperatures do drop to 69 degrees and eventually that low pressure in the midsection of the country will slide to our north swing a cold front through and bring us some rain towards the end of the week. the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast, it is breezy tomorrow, winds could gust 25 miles an hour or so. not as warm but still above the average, 75. then wall to wall sunshine here, still feeling very pleasant with less winds of 69 degrees. early sun on thursday brings more clouds in the afternoon. 74 degrees. and then thursday night into friday, on and off showers around. there could be around a quarter of an inch but very warm at 77. passover begins at sundown on friday.

the weekend is looking really nice. any morning shower saturday quickly returns to sunshine. that continues into sunday. upper 60's for highs and staying mild and dry on monday of 72 degrees. so, not a lot of rain at the end of the week. we kind of need a little rain but it will at least reduce the pollen just a tad at the end of the week. >> that will help out. >> thanks adam. >> one of philadelphia zoo's most beloved animals is going to be a momma again. 21-year-old female gorilla honey is pregnant and the baby is due in the fall. by the way the pregnancy was confirmed with an over the counter test just like the kind they use on humans. an ultrasound confirm the baby has a normal heartbeat. the mother is doing great. doctors will carefully monitor mom and baby. honey has a 13-year-old gorilla son.

i'm backing josh shapiro for attorney general because things have to change. we need criminal justice reform because our prisons are far too overcrowded. we have to deal with drug addiction through treatment, not incarceration. and use our prison for those who are truly violent.

>> ♪ >> "action news." delaware valley's leading news program. with ducis rodgers, meteorologist cecily tynan and jim gardner. >> ♪ >> monday night hack ah crossing guard is killed on the job in new jersey. and a couple from out of town survives a close call on a philadelphia street. but the big story on "action news" tonight is the arrest of the alleged trigger man in the shooting of a philadelphia cop, 23-year-old scott griffin was apprehended today on the 1200 block of alden street in west philadelphia. the shooting happened after a carjacking. police officers james mccullough was shot in the leg. he is in stable condition. "action news" reporter chad pradelli is live at police headquarters tonight. chad, police say they got their man today.

>> reporter: yes, jim, after a 17 hour manhunt undercover narcotics officers captured griffin on alden street and investigators believe they have recovered the gun believed to have been used to shoot officer james mccullough. police say after carjacking a woman at 59th and market scott give you fin and samir coyett saw mccullough and his partner approaching after the victim flagged down the officers. >> when the shooting suspect first gets out the vehicle there's a slight wrestling, tussling right then and there and then the suspect starts to take off. officer mccullough starts to chase him. at that point he turns, he shoots and he shoots him one time in the leg. >> reporter: that shooting suspect griffin got away. coyett did not. thanks to whom police are calling a second robbery victim moments before the carjacking. >> the nonshooting suspect fled towards the el station at 60th and market. he actually ran past
