accident that killed a school superintendant this morning and police say the person behind the wheel was a 17-year-old students at the school. the school community in robbinsville, new jersey, is plainly in shock. dr. steven mayer was jogging with his dog this morning when he was hit by the vehicle and both he and the dog were killed. nora muchanic is live on washington boulevard where in one hour the community will be holding a vigil for mayor. >> reporter: jim, it's been awful for this community. the superintendant was a beloved figure here and all of this is made worse because sources are telling us that detectives are looking at distracted driving as a possible cause to this crash. >> steve always put the student's needs first and we'll work through that as we deal with this devastating loss. >> robbinsville is in mourning after the sudden death of dr. steven mayer.

the father whose wife also teaches in the district was killed while walking along with his dog, dutch, who was also killed. the student was rushing to the school for a class trip when the accident occurred. >> the accidents is under investigation and no summons are issued at this time. >> we are all grieving, the only way to walk through the grief is to uphold each other. >> police are not identifying the student driver, the teen was taken to the crisis center after the crash. classes are canceled today and tomorrow for all 3,000 students in the district. grief counselors were on hand at the school today. >> what a great man and how precious life is. they are leaving flowers at the site of the vigil tonight and
