paisley park. >> last weekend his plane made an emergency landing after a concert. he was treated but later released. >> grammy award winner, prince. >> reporter: the singer spotteded here just last month courtside at a warriors game. >> people don't realize he sold over 100 million albums. he won seven grammy awards. he won an academy award. >> reporter: fans across the country celebrating prince's life with his music. >> it's deb stating. i always felt like we were his family. he was so talented. i could play so many instruments. it's a sad loss for music today. >> he was 57 years old. he was known tony have hundreds of songs never released in what fans called the vault which means we may not have heard the last of his music. ryan and diane. >> and spike lee was one of many celebrities paying tribute to prince. >> he invited fans to a block

party outside of his home in brooklyn. more than 1,000 people showed up. cramming the streets to sing and dance to prince's music in celebration of his life. lee said he just saw prince two weeks ago and he looked fine. and prince earned seven grammy awards, an oscar and the rock and roll hall of fame. >> he battled his label for his own music and his name and won. we're joined now on the phone by music industry insider bruno del granado. thanks for being with us. >> good morning, diane. good morning, ryan. >> i want to start now on his career because a lot of people don't realize what kind of musician he was and how early this started. he played just about every instrument out there. talk a little bit about the beginning and how this started for him. >> well, prince was signed when he was 18 years old to warner brothers records. and he released his debut album following year. here is an artist brand new and is allowed to use his own songs,

his own compositions. played all the instruments on the album and troued his record himself. unheard of up till prince did it. and he loved that freedom of doing everything himself in the studio and handing in a finished master that he wouldn't have it any other way. so he certainly was a trendsetter for that for artists controlling their musical destinies from early on. >> bruno, so many of us admired prince for his musical genius, for his ability to span across jen raz and really excel at pretty much everything he did. we know very little about the man. what do you know about prince? what kind of man was he? what kind of person was he? to his band mates and people who encountered him. >> prince was obsessed with music. music was his life. and it was funny because you would go to a prince concert. it would be a three-hour religious fair. next thing you know, an hour later everybody's telling you go to a small club because prince is going to do another set and

another one after that. he live ford music. i think music was the thing that drove him throughout his life. he constantly pushed the envelope musically and even though he did have somewhat of a career on the acting side and we saw it in "purple rain" and? >> under the cherry moon" and several other films, lis love was music. more than anything being on stage. being on stage was a religious experience. and nothing, nothing could supersede that for him. to this day, we have never read a bad review of a prince concert ever, ever ever. >> and bruno, for many artist who's kind of tried to push the envelope like you said, there tends to be pushback in the beginning. what was the reception like for him when he first started and wanted to do all these things on his own and wanted to dress in his way and wanted to kind of be so unconventional? >> well, with the first big single "i want to be your lover," people didn't know if he was a man or a woman.

he pushed the boundaries on gender, sexuality and even race back in the '70s when this was completely unheard of. and he was the opening act for the rolling stones in 1981 tour. he was booed off stage because he was so unique and so original. nobody really understood what he was all about. eventually people realized that we were witnessing somebody who was even greater than most of his peers around him. >> yeah, and we're looking right now at video from the super bowl. tell us about that and what kind of a turning point that was in his career. >> well, we hadn't heard from prince in several years. his big comeback was the super bowl. to this day, it's the probably the most acclaimed super bowl halftime performance we've ever seen there. he covered bob dillon and the foo fight areas, his own music, as well. it was a rainy night in miami. and prince just pulled all stops and made the most incredible

this is "world news now." >> and good morning. i'm diane macedo. >> i'm ryan smith in for kendis gibson. and what a day it is. you know, a lot of people remembering prince. a lot of people in mourning, as well. >> that's right. it's kind of a double-edged sword. you're kind of in mourning but at the same time, there are a lot of people celebrating him. there are dance parties from everywhere. spike lee is throwing one. the leading story is the shocking death of prince. one of the biggest names in music gone too soon. >> prince was just 57. he was found dead yesterday at his compound in suburban minneapolis. >> the cause of death is unknown but an autopsy is scheduled for today. condolences pouring in. president obama said we lost a creative icon tweeting a strong spirit transcends rules and prince once said, nobody's spirit was stronger, bolder or more creative. >> prince is being remembered by his hometown sports team, the minnesota twins displayed purple lights and an image of the singer on a jumbotron that read,

good night sweet prince. as fans gathderred to honor prince, a rainbow braerd in the sky over his home. fans are celebrating his life in the streets of minneapolis. abc's dan harris is there. >> hello from downtown minneapolis where there is a massive street party going on in honor of a native son who became pop music royalty, prince, of course. thousands of people listening to prince songs in these streets that have been shut down. they're singing along and when the action winds down in the street, it's going to move inside this club, the first avenue club. an iconic club in downtown minneapolis. it's a place where prince himself performed many times. it was also the backdrop for some of the scenes in the classic movie "purple rain." there's a lot of the celebration. there's also an undercurrent of sadness. people here loved prince. he was beloved all over the word and all over the country. this was his hometown. he could have lived anywhere but he dhoes stay here. for that people are very proud. they used to see him in the

local supermarkets. outside of prince's home and studio paisley park, people have been laying flowers and balloons. many of them purple in honor of the man sometimes known as "the purple one." the investigation is ongoing into what caused his death. but as one person said here, his music will live forever. dan harris, abc news, in downtown minneapolis. >> thank you, dan. prince signed his first record deal as a teenager. his music and lyrics transcend generations and genres. >> people of all ages turned out last night for a street party in brooklyn hosted by spike lee paying tribute through song and dance. we have more now from abc's byron pitts who looked at the superstar and his unforgettable mark on rock, funk and soul. ♪ >> reporter: prolific, pioneering. ♪ little red corvette >> reporter: a star so big the world knew him simply by his first name, prince.

born prince rogers nelson, 1958, in minneapolis. writing his first song at 7, his first album at 19. his hits endless. ♪ mixing the profane, the profound, an intoxicating brew of sexuality and spirituality on stage. ♪ she wore a raspberry beret ♪ the kind you'd buy in a secondhand store ♪ >> reporter: seven grammys, a golden globe, an academy award for "purple rain" in 1985. ♪ purple rain, purple rain >> reporter: standing just 5'2", his flamboyance, his funk. known to have played every instrument, sung every line of his music. here he is at his 2004 rock and

roll hall of fame induction ceremony. "rolling stone" called him one of the 100 greatest artists of all time. no one knows exactly how many songs prince wrote and produced. he kept a treasure trove of never released work at his home in minneapolis. married twice, famously private, he changed his name to a symbol in 1993, becoming "the artist formerly known as prince." explaining his reasons in part to larry king. >> i had to search deep within my heart and spirit and i wanted to make a change and move to a new plateau in my life. and one of the ways in which i did that was to change my name and sort of divorce me from all the past and all the hangups that go along with it. ♪ maybe i'm just too demanding >> reporter: prince once said of himself, "as i go on this journey called life i rarely look back." for many nights to come, we will. ♪ this is what it sounds like when doves cry ♪ >> reporter: byron pitts, abc news, new york.
