in front of the day care sending children and workers scrambling for safety. the suspects ended up barricading themselves inside a philadelphia row home when all was said and done, police took three people into custody. it is monday afternoon. i'm brian taff. >> and i'm sharrie williams. the big story on "action news" is the shooting and standoff in logan. trish hartman is live on the scene. these were scary moments for the day care caught in the middle of all of this. >> reporter: exactly right, sharrie. police say this all unfolded here on old york road in the street right in front of precious babies learning academy. one man was shot five times as some of the kids were outside taking a walk. as soon as brittany mcneil heard there was a shooting outside her children's day care she came to pick them up. >> my mom called me and told me that they were shooting and that my son was one of the kids that was outside while they were shooting. so i got up and left. >> the kids usually take walks. it was like three or four of

the teachers be with them then might take them on a walk around the corn take them to the playground or something. >> reporter: today when gun shots rang out those teachers grabbed the kids and ran inside. a police helicopter zoomed overhead and swat vehicles responded shortly after the shooting happened around noon. police say a 29-year-old man was shot five times including in the neck, chest and stomach. he was rushed to einstein medical center in critical condition and was not cooperating with police. detectives say the suspect fled around the corner to a home on the 1400 block of conley street. neighbors were asked to leave as a swat team moved in. >> at that point they told me i had to evacuate. as you can see i got my pajamas on. she said come as you are and took me out for security reasons. >> reporter: three men were loadd into a van and taken to the 36th district. police say one was identified

as the gunman. the names of the suspects have not been released. no word on any charges get. a day care worker told me they actually train for situations like this and while a few of the kids were shaken up they are thankful that everyone is okay tonight. live in logan, trish hartman channel6 "action news." >> thank you. we are coming off a deadly weekend in the city of philadelphia. six deadly shootings at six different locations all across the city and today police are still on the hunt for some of those suspects. just a few hours ago we heard the latest on a shooting that happened in broad daylight yesterday afternoon on the 1400 block of vernon road. police say 21-year-old alex cherry was shot in the head and killed execution style while talking to an aide for chris rabe a pennsylvania for the statehouse and it happened just outside of a store. four hours later a second shooting just around the corner on temple road. police say someone in a red suv fired shots into a crowd striking and killing

18-year-old elijah frazier. today officials say they do believe that both of these incidents are gang related and that these two shootings are connected. ly. >> right now the only correlation that we know for sure is that both of the decedents are friends, they both live in the area. so that's where we believe the connection is. >> what we know is there's been an i don'ty ongoing dispute between two groups of young men, one that lives in that area, one in lives in the logan area. so, we're trying to get ahold on the players and start to make that arrests. >> there is video from the vernon road incident and police are combing through it for any clues. so far no arrests in either case. brian. >> all right, alicia, thank you. we are less than 24 hours away from polls opening in pennsylvania and delaware and almost all the presidential candidates have spent the the day campaigning in our area. on the republican side john kasich visited a south philadelphia diner this morning. and donald trump is holding a rally in west chester. and that is where we find

vernon odom who is live with groups of both supporters and protestors there at the scene. vernon. >> reporter: they're out here en masse brian good evening. donald trump has just gone to the stage. hundreds of very vocal anti-trump supporters are inside. they've been turning people away all day and the vocal demonstrators are out here in the heart of this campus. donald trump makes this election appearance in pennsylvania where polls show him running at least 20 points ad had of both of his gop rivals. by the hundreds anti-trump demonstrators have gathered in the heart of west chester university's campus to display their distaste for the kind of presidential campaign the gop frontrunner has waged. on the other side of the street, donald trump supporters by the hundreds, all lined up for entrance into the hall. ohio governor john kasich

campaigned in south philadelphia this morning with a late breakfast crowd. he was swarmed by tv cameras and reporter ass he passed the flesh in the penrose diner. he was pressed to explain the deal with ted cruz. >> we don't have all resources in the world but we're still going and we have to husband our resources and i feel that it's very fair for me to be able to go to areas where i can spend my resources most effectively and the same is true for senator cruz. what's the big deal? >> i get that the trump campaign is scared. they're scared of indiana. if donald wasn't scared he'd show up in indiana have a debate but he would much rather hide in trump tower, he'd much rather stay in northeastern states that tend to be more liberal than actually come to the midwest, come to the heartland and defend his policies. >> and that was vernon odom reporting this afternoon. he showed you the scene outside. this is the scene inside. republican frontrunner donald

trump has taken the podium there in west chester. he has some very pointed words earlier today for john kasich and ted cruz many expecting him to continue that pointed criticism this afternoon. we'll be monitoring this and we'll bring you the latest on "action news" throughout the evening. in the meantime on the democratic side, hillary clinton and her campaign have been all over the area today. clinton held a get out the vote rally this morning at world cafe live at the queens in wilmington, delaware. she'll hold another rally tonight at city hall. her daughter chelsea also made several stops. bernie sanders spent the morning in hartford connecticut but tonight he'll be back in philadelphia he'll speak at drexel at 8 o'clock clocks blocks away from where clinton will be. tomorrow we'll have representatives from the league of women voters on hand to answer any questions you might have. call the number on your screen from 7:00 in the morning when polls open until polls close at 8 o'clock tomorrow night. >> we are starting a new week and it's time for a check of

update on this turnpike situation. >> let's go live to matt pelman in the "action news" traffic center keeping an eye on all of it. matt. >> it's never quiet around here let me echo that. what a mess as we start the new work week brian and sharrie. trying to get home not a and easy feat especially on the pennsylvania turnpike where we still have the truck on its side, emergency crews remain on the scene. they are letting some eastbound traffi traffic by on e westbound shoulder. the scene is eastbound approaching bensalem the route one interchange and as you can see we have a whole bunch of stuck traffic waiting to get by on that left shoulder, as we go out to the maps plan x is still in place. that means the turnpike is still officially shut down eastbound between willow grove and bensalem, route one. you've got a whole bunch of stopped traffic on the eastbound side coming away from virginia drive. westbound there's a gaper delay so on the went side you're looking at speeds just in the teens but it's better than the stopped conditions that you have on the eastbound side so you want to stay local through the neighborhoods this

afternoon. county line, 63, 73 are the ways to go instead. meanwhile problems on the schuylkill expressway. we had a broken down bus here in the eastbound lanes near university. that just cleared out. then in the backlog there was a crash by girard. there's a crash on city avenue sobbed just off the schuylkill blocking a lane and causing a mess there and a pair of disabled vehicles on 95. one is northbound near girard. the other a disabled truck northbound near woodhaven. let's do the commuter report on this monday afternoon. yeah, complete standstill on the pennsylvania turnpike. that's 276 eastbound approaching bensalem. again, stay local. county line, street road doesn't look too awful, 63, route 73. we'll check it situation again, brian and sharrie, coming up in the next half hour. >> busy monday. matt, thank you. still ahead, the questions continue after the death of prince while investigators try to figure out how the music icon died, there's another issue to resolve. what happens to his massive fortune? >> and shooting at a high school prom ends with a

>> ♪ >> the city of cleveland will pay $6 million to settle the lawsuit brought by the family of tamir rice. police shot and killed the 12-year-old back in november of 2014 after responding to a call. the boy was holding a toy gun at the time. under the terms of the settlement the city does not acknowledge any fault in rice's death. a grand jury decided not to indict the trainee who shot rice or the officer who was training him. >> two students shot at a high school prom are expected to recover. police say 18-year-old jacob wagner shot the teens with a high powered rifle in the school parking lot in northern wisconsin on saturday. investigators believe the former student planned to go inside the dance and shoot people at random but a police officer who was already patrolling the campus shot and killed wagner outside undoubtedly saving lives.

>> we don't know what could have happened had he entered the high school. we can only speculate. we can only say what if but i have a feeling that what if would have been much more tragic. >> now family members have said that wagner was bullied prompting wisconsin governor scott walker to call for more conversations about mental health, a possible motive though is still under investigation. >> as friends family members and fans mourn the loss of the the international superstar known as prince, questions remain who will inherit his estate. that estate estimated at $300 million is still growing with his music topping the charts as fans continue to mourn his loss and celebrate his sound but there's still no word today on whether or not prince had a will. he did not leave behind a wife or any living children. he does have one sister, the woman seen right there with

chose a republican judge for the open seat but he changed his mind after pushback from senate president steve sweeney. >> all in all a pretty good weekend around here and as we mentioned a few minutes ago the work week getting off to a really nice start today. >> a beautiful day. let's head back over to meteorologist adam joseph with the outside picture right there behind you saying it all. hey, adam. >> a nice start to the work week but we'll have a chance for rain a couple of days this week. we really need the rain and as you look live on sky6 you see that milky white appearances to the sky. high clouds have that pushed in, it's warm and also you notice the trees there in center city all in green. they have really blossomed over the last week to week and a half where temperatures will be running well above normal and they've been pollinating like crazy. the last nine days our high temperatures in philadelphia have been better and over that 70-degree mark. averaging about five and a half degrees above normal over the last nine days and rainfall only a drop in the bucket here. we've only had around .10 of

an inch of rain in a week and a half or so. 76 reading, 75 for wilmington and philadelphia so as expected, expecting temperatures to stop in the 70's dan right alon today and ae 67 degrees, cape may 61 degrees. satellite and radar warm front is to our north and you see a little bit of showers but they're really falling apart at the present time. high clouds streaming in but the actual center of low pressure is just east of omaha and you can see a severe thunderstorm watch box there has popped up right around chicago, points to the north and west and the storm will continue to wind up and send some energy to the east here for tuesday. so, for tonight it is mild, 54 allentown, 57 in wilmington, 60 philadelphia, 61 in dover. clouds again fighting those stars overnight tonight and by early tomorrow morning for that rush hour, really the only locations that could see a downpour or shower, lehigh valley to the north with some of that warm air invection coming in.

66, though, in philadelphia, 68 in millville so a very warm start to your tuesday and we all bust into the lower 80's tomorrow and you're going to notice an increase in the humidity as well at 2 o'clock some of the storms developing to the north. then they collapse through during the evening rush hour in spots tomorrow with temperatures in the upper 70's still and then by 8:30 all of that weather pushes into southern new jersey and delaware and drying out to the north. that four day at 4:00 forecast as we go over the next four days, warm with some of those afternoon downpours and thunderstorms tomorrow of 83. it is not an all day washout but any storm could be on the gusty side. we'll watch that and then it's brighter to the north wednesday as high pressure comes in. clouds linger in southern areas at 67. and a cool rainy day now on thursday. much needed here at 59 degrees and then trying to dry out on friday with temperatures in the low 60's and we will talk more about tomorrow's weather as well as the upcoming weekend with the broad street run in the next half hour. >> adam, thank you. >> yeah. >> and up next a woman has to

why should we trust a like steve santarsiero who will say anything to win an election? after claiming credit for passing universal background checks for all gun purchases, "santarsiero admitted in an interview that he didn't write pennsylvania's gun safety law." his campaign brags about his accomplishments, but "in fact, he has failed in 54 attempts to get any legislation on the books." we just cant trust steve santarsiero. i'm shaughnessy naughton, and i approve this message because we deserve better. >> a woman is in the hospital right now after jumping out of a window to escape her burning home in north philadelphia. chopper6 was over the 400 block of west glenwood avenue when the fire broke out about 8:15 this morning crews say a

woman jumped from a second story window. she's at temple hospital in critical condition. officials have not yet told us her name. they have also not yet said how this fire started. we're still working to learn the name of a 16-year-old girl in the hospital after she was shot in the head in trenton. police say it happened about 6:30 last night at injuries see street and holme avenue. they say the girl was riding as a passenger in a minivan when someone started shooting at that vehicle. the girl is in critical condition right now. police have not arrested anyone and they have not told us why they think this shooting happened. philadelphia police are looking for the man who stole someone's credit cards and then tried to use them at wawa. they gave us surveillance video from that store an aramingo avenue. this was back on march 26th. they say the suspect used credit cards he had stolen from a car on the 2300 block of oregon avenue. police are asking anyone who might recognize this suspect to please call them right away. >> well, there could be a big time merger coming in the

publishing world. gannett made an offer to buy tribune today. it offered $815 million to buy tribune which owns the l.a. times, the chicago tribune and other newspapers. the offer price is about five and a half times what tribune is expected to earn this year. tribune's ceo says the offer was a surprise but that the board will consider it. now here's a look at today's closing numbers and we have red arrows across-the-board. the dow under 18,000 today closing down 26 and a half points. the nasdaq on a three-day posting of loss here, down 10 and 44 points, the sunday 500 is down nearly four points. >> from our delaware news room local veterans had a chance to get help directly from a congressman today. representative john kearny held veterans office hours today at the delaware national guard joint force headquarters in new castle. he and his staff took questions from vets who need

will take place at 6 o'clock this evening. the d.a. in montgomery county has provided no yu updates upda. at last check detectives were conducting very new interviews d taking statements. robert braxton was shot and killed by a fellow church member sunday morning. >> there was a disturbance that escalated into an altercation between two church members. at least one shot was fired by a church member involved in the altercation. >> we were worshiping and you hear three different gun shots right after another and everybody went on the floor and was hiding. >> reporter: montgomery county district attorney kevin steele says braxton was shot at least once in the chest and died at a local hospital. the shooter is cooperating and had a concealed weapons permit. so far no one has been charged. church leadership calling the braxton family a good family

but wouldn't provide other details about the 27-year-old victim or his shooter. braxton's aunt spoke to "action news" yesterday. >> you don't go to church to be killed. you just don't do that. and he was a young man. he had his whole life ahead of him. >> reporter: and while a vigil is planned here at the montgomeryville township building at 6 o'clock, there is also a prayer service at another keystone fellowship church, that one in schwenksville scheduled for 7:00 p.m. i'm live in montgomeryville, chad pradelli, channel6 "action news." >> all right, chad, thank you. the community shows support today for students who returned to the delaware high school where a girl was killed last week. concerned adults and community leaders were outside howard high school in wilmington to hug and comfort students as they arrived this morning. today was the first full day of classes since the death of 16-year-old amy joyner francis

last thursday. she died after a fight in the girl's bathroom. grief counselors are available at the school today. the organizer of today's gathering says she doesn't want people to retaliate. >> we're actually expressing warm hugs and good vibes at howard high welcoming the students with just love. >> police have not announced any charges in this case. >> a teenager has now died from her injuries after being hit by a vehicle on a south jersey street. the victim's family tells us 15-year-old gavin conley died today surrounded by relatives and friends. conley was injured in a crash about 8:30 saturday night on route 42 near greentree road in washington township. police say the teen was hit by a toyota yaris driven by a 21-year-old man. the driver originally drove off but did return 10 minutes later. so far no charges have been filed. people living in parts of bear delaware were without power for some of the day. garbage truck crashed into

power lines in the 2700 block of denny road. it then caught fire. firefighters say the arms that raise the trash into the truck bed brought down those wires. good news here is that no one was injured in that crash. >> all right. talking about our weather now it was pretty nice over the weekend and start of the work week starting off the same way. >> yeah, sunshine sticking around as temps really starting to warm from over the weekend. we were 70 degrees both saturday and sunday and today so far mid 70's so we're moving in the upward direction. live on sky6 at philadelphia international airport 75 degrees and it feels very comfortable out there with that dewpoint of 46 but that dewpoint will jump a good 10 degrees tonight and tomorrow so you'll feel the increase in humidity as we get into tuesday and that also will bring the chance for some downpours and storms. and ocean city a bit of a different story here, that wind off the water out of the south at 10 miles per hour, the temperature is just 59 degrees while we're in the 70's inland. we've seen this day in and day out and very typical for this

spring season to be much cooler at the shore. storm tracker6 live double scan, low pressure near minneapolis bringing severe weather near chicago. this will work to the south and east as we go into tomorrow afternoon especially so we'll talk about the chance of some scattered downpours and a few gusty thunderstorms. we'll let you know what to expect with those storms. more rain on the way for the end of the week. much needed and i'll get it on that seven day coming up in a bit. >> all right adam thank you. the sexual assault case against bill cosby can move forward. a pennsylvania court reject they had comedian's legal appeal. cosby's attorneys had filed an appeal arguing that former d.a. bruce castor guaranteed him back in 2005 he would not be prosecuted in exchange for his testimony in a related civil case involving andrea constand. well, the decision today now paves the way for cosby to return to court for a preliminary hearing. cosby has said in the past that his encounter with constand was consentual. >> more than 500,000 land

against their life will now be eligible to acquire a gun permit. christie altered the regulations based on recommendations from a state panel. but today assembly majority leader louis greenwald and senate majority leader loretta weinberg introduced a measure to block those changes. the democrats say the new policy could result in too many residents qualifying for a permit to carry. >> as you've seen we've been following the presidential candidates as most of them campaign in our area today. hillary clinton is getting ready for her next event outside philadelphia city hall. she's also get something help from her daughter today, chelsea clinton stumped for votes on her mother's behalf in lansdowne. rival bernie sanders is gearing up for a rally tonight at drexel university. and on the republican side of things john kasich and ted cruz are now working together against donald trump and donald trump's got quite a few things to say about that. we've got much more on all of it coming up at 5 o'clock tonight. the presidential race not the only contest we're following.

>> that's what i was thinking. >> i don't think i'll be trying that out. i'll tell you brian and sharrie we're barely moving this afternoon on a lot of these highways including the pennsylvania turnpike which remains shut down in the eastbound direction. a plan x is in place. that means it's closed likely for a little while between willow grove and bensalem. so, we have a bunch of stuck traffic there. that stuck traffic is squeezing by on the left shoulder but all traffic is being forced to exit from the eastbound lanes at willow grove but before that you hit a jam. you don't want to plan on getting farther east an fort washington. bail by then and use the secondary roads like county ryanline, route 63, route 73. slow speeds as you head eastbound. a crash to start the afternoon that was blocking 309 northbound. broken down vehicle in east norriton along 202 southbound at colonial drive blocking the turn ran n west norriton it's a crash.

across much of the area. just some high clouds streaming through the region and much cooler at the shore where once again that sea breeze in effect. 57 right now on the boardwalk, 59 in beach haven, 60 in cape may but dover at 76 degrees. mid 70's for wilmington, philadelphia, all allentown even the poconos in the lower 70's. forget the 70's we're going to the 80's around here for tuesday. it's all ahead of a system. we've got a warm front to our north. you can see high clouds that continue to stream in away from that front. low pressure just to the west of chicago spinning up some severe weather and severe weather is going to be a big deal tomorrow especially in the heart of the nation while we deal with some scattered gusty thunderstorms as well in the afternoon. but for tonight clouds coming in at times so they'll be around through much of the overnight hours. very warm and there could be a very late shower in far northern areas close to the lehigh valley in time for that morning rush hour. 54 to 60 with that southwesterly wind and that

humidity also will be increasing overnight in fact, at 7:00 a.m. tomorrow morning 63 philadelphia, 65 in wilmington and a warm 67 in millville and there is a couple of those showers or downpours in those far northern areas and it kind of remains up there through much of the morning into the early afternoon hours. by 2:30, a couple of those downpours starting to pop up but notice all the 80's, even down to the south at the shore could hit close to 80 degrees tomorrow afternoon and by 5 o'clock, more in the way of those scattered downpours and thunderstorms developing with a front that will be progressing through and by 8 o'clock tomorrow night, most of them are south of philadelphia but notice 50's invading from the north as that drier air moves in behind some of these scattered downpours and storms. so, for tomorrow afternoon, the key time really is 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. they're scattered. we're not looking at a solid line coming through. the scattered but some of them will be gusty and could contain pea to quarter sized hail and then beyond that we have that cooldown to follow tomorrow night into wednesday.
