one plan was shot five times just as little ones were outside. "action news" reporter trish hartman is live at the scene tonight. trish, it was bad. it could have been catastrophic. >> reporter: yeah, jim, a few of the kids were shaken up but none of them was hurt. a day care worker told me they train for scenarios like this one and today that training had to be put to use. after the shooting on the 5800 block of old york road, brittany mcneil rushed to precious babies learning academy to pick up her two children early. >> my kids, i feel much better. about to go home and make sure my son didn't really see nothing like that. >> reporter: she says her two-year-old son was outside with a group of children and teachers taking a walk when they heard gun shots. the teachers grabbed the kids and ran inside. >> people from the day care grabbed him. that's pretty much all he said that they was grabbing him. >> crazy. nobody got no common courtesy and not worrying about the kids out here today.

>> reporter: police say around noon a 29-year-old man was shot five times including in the neck, chest and stomach. he was rushed to einstein medical center in critical condition and police described him as uncooperative. detectives say the shooter ran around the corner to a home on the 1400 block of conlyn street and that's when police declared a barricade situation bringing in a swat team. some neighbors were escorted out of their homes. >> i don't know what happened. i was in my house i heard the cops running back and forth. i came to the door and then at that point they told me high to evacuate. >> reporter: some folks waited the the police station nearby while others joined a small crowd that gathered at the end of the street watching police work. 30 minutes later three men were taken out of the house in handcuffs. police identified one of them as the shooter. back here live at the site of the shooting parents we spoke to praised the day care for how it handled the situation. we're still waiting to learn the names of the suspects. no word on any charges. we're live in the city's logan

section trish hartman channel6 "action news." jim. >> trish thank you. one person was killed today when a tractor-trailer overturned on the pennsylvania turnpike and crushed a car. the accident happened shortly before 3 o'clock in the eastbound lanes near the street road exit in bensalem. the tractor-trailer was carrying 20,000 pounds of soap. one person in the car was killed. the tractor-trailer driver went to the hospital. classes resumed this morning -- let me say this first. eastbound traffic is still gridlocked as police investigate and crews clean up the wreckage. now the next story. classes resume this morning at howard technical high school in wilmington. it is the first full day for students since the death of student amy joyner last thursday. she died after a fight with other girls in a school bathroom. "action news" reporter christie ileto is live at the elementary school where a town hall meeting is supposed to start just now. christie, what's the situation there?

>> reporter: well, the district says this was the first day back. attendance was high but it was still emotionally hard day for students. that town hall was supposed to start moments ago where city leaders will be addressing parents' concerns and what are the next steps moving forward. adults greeted students as they returned back to howard high monday. what was the first day -- what was the first full day like? >> today, well, it was kind of heartbroken. like i broke down in school. >> reporter: days earlier this was the scene. >> they say it was a fight and i don't know. >> the girl got jumped in the bathroom. >> reporter: 16-year-old sophomore amy joyner francis was assault fled a girl's restroom and died from her injuries. exact cause of death remains under investigation and so far no charges have been filed. >> this is our clarion call to get factual information out to the community. >> reporter: darius brown organized tonight's town hall

where district parents have flocked to get answers on their concerns following the fatal fight. >> and also for us to give some sense of security and assurance about the climate of the school and us moving forward. >> reporter: what are some of the questions you're going to be asking tonight in this meeting regarding howard high. >> well, how are you going to keep my daughter safe? what are you going to do. >> reporter: now many parents and students that i spoke with say that they do believe that howard high is safe. they just feel this isolated incident should not define the entire school. now as for amy her wake is scheduled for this sunday. reporting live in wilmington, christie ileto channel6 "action news. jim. >> thank you christie. a trash truck caught fire in bear delaware late this morning. it happened at 11:30 in the 2700 block of denny road. officials say the truck came into contact with electrical wires bringing them down on the vehicle. that sparked a fire. the driver was not hurt. but the truck was heavily damaged and the incident caused power and cable outage

in the area. a pennsylvania appeals court has rejected bill cosby's efforts to stop his criminal case. that in montgomery county. today the superior court ruled that the sexual assault case against cosby can go forward. former temple university employee andrea constand says she was drugged and sexually assaulted at cosby's home in 2004. cosby has not entered a plea yet in the case. he remains free on $1 million bail posted after his arrest in december. >> ♪ >> this is the eve of the pennsylvania primary and all the candidates are focusing on the keystone state. "action news" reporter vernon odom is live on the campus of west chester university where donald trump held a rally this afternoon. vernon, how did that go and what did trump have to say about this new alliance between his two rivals? >> reporter: he had plenty to say, jim. good evening. donald trump has come and gone from here in west chester and

despite all the talk about him toning down his oratorical bomb pasts, the same old trump showed out here on the campaign trail today. donald trump gave the jam packed crowd what 33 came for a performance attacking his opponents the median the republican party establishment. several hecklers were escorted out. >> oh, get out of here. who is this guy? who is this guy? who is he? who is this guy? go home to mom. >> reporter: all this as a massive crowd of anti-trump demonstrators were in the streets in the heart of west chester university's campus. trump lambasted his two gop rivals john kasich and senator ted cruz. last night they announced a political shot gun marriage in a desperate move to stop trump from getting the number of delegates he needs to get the nomination on the first ballot this summer. >> two grown politicians have to collude against one person

who is only been a politician i hate to say that about myself for 10 months. in order to try and stop that person from getting the republican nomination. >> reporter: governor kasich of ohio stumped in south philadelphia for votes this morning at the diner. >> the reason why i'm in this race is i'm the only one that beats hillary clinton. now i'm going to do everything i can to make sure that we don't lose the united states senate, the supreme court the state and the local courthouse. i don't see this as any big deal. kasich says he will not campaign for the indiana primary and cruz has agreed to stay out of new mexico and oregon. >> we are headed to a contested convention and at a contested convention, donald trump is in real trouble. why? because he cannot earn the support of the majority of the delegates elected by the people. >> reporter: jim, senator cruz and governor kasich concede this is a desperate move to try to block trump from getting the democratic

your screen from 7:00 a.m. when the polls open until the polls close at 8:00 p.m. vice president joe biden was in philadelphia today talking about making education more affordable. he spoke at the community college of philadelphia in spring garden. the vice president focused on his proposal to make two years of community college free to any student who maintains a 2.5gpa. he praised the college's efforts to make college more affordable for local students. coming up on "action news" tonight a vigil is under way for the victim of yesterday's church shooting as police try to piece together what led to deadly violence inside the sanctuary. and the word is that eagles quarterback sam bradford wants out of philadelphia. jaime apody with that story. >> i'm tracking a system moving in tomorrow that will bring us a surge of very warm air as well as this chance of some thunderstorms. i'll have details on what to

>> tonight the investigation continues in the wake of yesterday it's deadly shooting at a montgomery county church in north wales. the gun shots rang out right during worship. "action news" reporter chad pradelli is live at the montgomery county -- at the montgomery township municipal building. chad, what are the details about this? what are you learning? >> reporter: jim, about five to 10 minutes ago three dozen friends and family of 27-year-old robert braxton showed up here to hold a

vigil. you can see they just released some balloons into the air. they are here to remember the 27-year-old who was gunned down during church services yesterday. >> you don't go to church to be killed. you know, you just don't do that. and he's a young man. he had his whole life ahead of him. >> reporter: grief and pain for the family of robert broxton, the young man shot and killed by a fellow member of the keystone fellowship church in north wales yesterday. >> there was a disturbance that escalated into an altercation between two church members. at least one shot was fired by a church member involved in the altercation. >> we were worshiping and you hear three different gun shots right after everybody kind of went on the floor and was hiding. >> reporter: what led to the shooting and why braxton and the shooter were arguing authorities are not saying. the 27-year-old was shot in the chest and died at a local

hospital. today cones block the entrance to the church. its leadership said little monday but tells "action news" braxton and his family have been long time members and "a good family." it's unclear how long the shooter had been a member. investigators say he had a license to carry a concealed weapon and they were trying to determine if the shooting was justified. >> we have to, you know, take a look at the statements from people. we have to look at the forensic evidence we have and then we'll have to make determinations at this point. >> reporter: and also tonight, jim, there will be a prayer service at a at another keystone fellowship church that will take place at 7:00 p.m. at the church in schwenksville. live in montgomery township chad pradelli channel6 "action news. jim. >> thank you, chad. a dump truck overturned late this morning spilling its load in newark. you can see he gravel littering the road at the intersection of salem church road and east chestnut hill road. the driver suffered minor injuries. a north philadelphia woman

is in critical condition after jumping out a window to escape her burning home. the blaze erupted in the 400 block of west glenwood avenue at 8:15 this morning. crews say a woman jumped from the second story window. she was taken to temple university hospital. we don't yet know how the fire started. do you think when you are president you'll be paid as...

more than five and half degrees above normal and haven't had much rain in philadelphia. rainfall only about a tenth of an inch but tomorrow afternoon could get some showers and thunderstorms. the key time 1 o'clock in the afternoon and 7 o'clock in the evening. they'll be scattered. doesn't mean everyone will see them but could have gusty winds even the potential for hail. and this is a cold front so behind that system cooler air will be moving in in the middle of the week but today it's very warm. 76 degrees in philadelphia. that's 9 degrees above normal. allentown and trenton 73. reading and wilmington 74. and once again, along the beaches it's a lot cooler with the winds off the ocean, cape may only 60 and the boardwalk in atlantic city only 58 degrees. we have some clouds but they're high and thin so we're getting a lot of filtered sunshine with high pressure still maintaining control of our weather but at the same time low pressure near minneapolis and this is the

system that will be sliding in tomorrow. it will bring us warmer air and the threat of storms. future tracker showing first we get a warm front moving through. so we could have a few showers after midnight, mainly north of philadelphia with warm invection. then as we head into the morning hours those storms should lift north across the poconos. look at these temperature. a warm start to the day. philadelphia 60. allentown 55. wilmington 62 degrees at 7 o'clock in the morning with some sunshine and then getting into the afternoon, 82 degrees at 2:30 and this is when we'll start to see a few showers popping up with the instability but the main line, this broken line of scattered showers and thunderstorms moving through the i-95 corridor around 5 o'clock so in time for the evening commute pressing across south jersey by 7:30 and then moving off the coast by 8:30 so if you're heading to the polls in pennsylvania or delaware, you definitely do want to take the umbrella or raincoat. in the meantime really the focus of the severe weather tomorrow is going to be across the plains. this could be a really bad day. we're looking at a moderate

risk of severe storms in wichita oklahoma city wind hail and the threat of large tornadoes could be a big problem across the plains tomorrow. so, back at home the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast, it's going to be warm tomorrow, 83 degrees, most of the day rain free but showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon and then on wednesday, transition day. we brighten to the north. the clouds hang on south of philadelphia. it's cooler, 67 degrees but it's much cooler and it's wet on thursday. another low pressure moves through. 59 degrees. on friday transition day. we'll try to dry gradually 63 degrees but timing is everything and it looks like we've got a beautiful weekend. plenty of sunshine, great weather for the union game on saturday. 69 degrees. the broad street run sunday morning looks good. sunshine, temperatures in the 50's to start. up to 70 by the afternoon with increasing clouds and next monday some showers and thunderstorms with a high of 67. i'll have an update on the threat of storms on "action

news" at 11:00. >> in fact, cecily, a group of west philadelphia students spent this afternoon getting ready for the broad street run. the global leadership academy charter school organized a special workout after school today for the students who are running the 10-mile race on sunday. and all of the kids are first time runners. school officials say they hope the experience inspires the students to be life long runners. abc's "world news tonight" with david muir is neck next on channel6.
