airport all smiles and eager to begin his career as a philadelphia eagle. ducis rodgers wentz got his first taste of the philadelphia sports media this afternoon at the philadelphia novacare center. what did we learn from listening to this man from north dakota. >> reporter: jim, i can tell you he was calm, he was poised. he gave thoughtful answers. he was very relaxed. how that translates onto the football field only time will tell. went was here at the team's practice facility and he got his jersey today. he'll wear number 11. he's been at the team's practice facility all afternoon. went did a meet and greet with some season ticket holders. some fans came out of the room and they described him as a quote/unquote great guy. wentz is not expected to start right away but make no mistake the birds view him as their franchise quarterback. he says he is okay with however the team handles his development. >> as a competitor you want to be out there but i understand that there's a lot to that and

she died last week after a fight with other girls in the school bathroom. well, tonight friends and community members will gather to share their grief and seek ways to make sure that something like this never happens again. "action news" reporter clad pradelli was live outside the seeds of greatness bible church in new castle. chad. >> reporter: jim, tonight there will be a program called code blue, the power of choice. it's designed to help teens deal with the choices they face, choices like the one several girls made last week that led to the death of amy joyner-francis. the grieving in the beating death of howard high school of technology sophomore amy joyner-francis continues. sources tell "action news" joyner-francis was beaten by three girls stabbed with pencils and her head slammed into a sink. chief bobby cummings said though that no weapon was used. the cause of death has not been released but images of paramedics frantically trying to save joyner-francis before

being air lifted to a local hospital are still fresh in the minds of students who kept relatively quiet this week as they continue to mourn. wilmington police have remained mostly silent as well telling reporters they're doing a thorough and complete investigation. >> there are over 3,000 printerd pages of data alone that must be painstakingly reviewed by the investigators on this case. because there's still a lot of work left to do by our detectives and the attorney general's office in terms of reviewing evidence and relevant facts, we are not in a position at this time to file charges. >> reporter: during a town hall meeting last week, chief cummings said he intends to charge the three girls involved. howard administrators say the students have been removed from school. and funeral service for amy joyner-francis are planned for this sunday. i'm live in new castle, chad pradelli, channel6 "action news." jim. >> thank you, chad.

two plane emergencies forced a ground stop at philadelphia international airport this morning. the faa says a republic area lines flight from toronto landed in philadelphia after reporting steering problems. that happened shortly after 8 o'clock. in a second emergency, a plane from richmond landed in philadelphia after the pilot reported smoke in the cockpit and cabin. the american eagle jet landed safely at 8:15. oxygen masks did deploy but nobody was hurt. the incidents backed up flights on the runway. the ground stop was lifted just after 9:00 a.m. we have been trying to escape this chilly wet spell. we've been trapped in but with no success. but we do need the rain and it looks like we can get substantial amounts on sunday. meteorologist cecily tynan is live at the "action news" big board. cecily, what's the latest from accuweather? >> and jim, we could get up to about three-quarters of an inch of rain on sunday but the entire weekend will not be a washout.

double scan live showing the showers that worked through earlier today have lifted north and east of our region. so, we have a break in the rain. however, as we fly out west, this is what we will be dealing with on sunday. there's a very powerful low pressure and it is causing severe weather, tornado warnings and watches, astern dougatornado possibly on the grd south of oklahoma city. parts of the rockies and colorado could get up to a foot of snow so it's a powerful storm system. it will not bring us severe weather because of the cold air. the cold air really basically saps the strength from the storm system and it has been cold the past three days, hasn't felt like spring. today's high 53 degrees. that's 16 degrees below normal. so, three days of temperatures stuck in the 50's. tomorrow, though, we should make it up into the low 60's. since it will be a dry day tomorrow with clouds giving way to some sunshine but clouds mainly the rule but

saturday may seventh at zion baptist church on north broad street. funeral services will follow. philadelphia's first african-american police commissioner died in his home near atlanta after a long illness. he was 72. saving lives was the focus of the citizens fire prevention committee meeting today. philadelphia fire commissioner derrick sawyer spoke about the city's progress in reducing deaths and injuries. sawyer says the city had the lowest number of fire deaths in history last year. the commissioner also accepted a recognition award for his dedication and his leadership. coming up on "action news" tonight, final funds have been secured to finish a project that will bring more jobs and more cargo to the port of philadelphia. and we'll go back to south philadelphia for reaction from the eagles about their first round pick. carson wentz. cecily tynan is back with the accuweather seven-day forecast when "action news"

"action news" reporter vernon odom has the story. >> reporter: a typical busy friday at the 90-year-old terminal one of philadelphia's busiest along the delaware. lots of jobs here with signs that many more will be added in the near future. years of river dredging are nearing completion. the balance of the $300 million in federal

funding needed to finish the project has now been secured and that has the politicians crowing. >> this is really a project about the future and about jobs. it's as simple as that. >> reporter: upon the completion of dredging over 100 miles of river from the mouth of the delaware to tioga here in philadelphia. the new dredging will provide channel depth of 45 feet putting philadelphia in league with other major east coast rivals. >> going to deepen that river and get these boats up and down and give new york a hell of a tussle. >> reporter: 500,000 containers come into philadelphia's port each year. completion of the dredging will allow larger slips to come into the port, ultimately raising capacity here to two and a half to 3 million containers a year meaning the job demand will double with wages averaging more than $30 an hour. >> we're going create 10,000 good family sustaining jobs right here in this port.

>> reporter: the experts say that dredging here will be completed in 2018. that will coincide with completion of the dredging now being done on the panama canal. all of this the experts say will have a dramatic positive impact on all the eastern ports of the united states. in south philadelphia, i'm vernon odom channel6 "action news. >> subaru is fulfilling its promise to create jobs in the camden area by starting with an investment in the future. the car company has joined forces with the local organization called respond to train new auto mechanics. students in respond's classes will become part of subaru university where they'll get the hands-on training needed to qualify for jobs with subaru. >> these are good high paying jobs too. an average technician can make anywhere from, say, $80,000 to well over a hundred thousand dollars. >> back in december subaru broke ground on its new u.s. headquarters in camden promising it would bring 700

jobs. the brandywine conservancy and museum of art in chadds ford opened a new exhibit today honoring its founder who died last weekend. george raymond known to friends as frolic was an artist philanthropist and conservationist. he was instrumental in helping the conservancy grow from 47 acres of preserved land to the 62,000 acres that it is today. weymouth died on sunday at the age of 79

from this philadelphia area. >> reporter: wentz also told us he's okay with how the eagles plan to develop huh him. it doesn't look like he'll start this season. that brings us to the elephant in the room how the eagles will handle their unhappy starting quarterback. sam bradford is not showing up to voluntary workouts. he and his agent are not happy the eagles drafted a quarterback. bradford says he want to be traded. the market for him is drying up but that probably doesn't matter because the eagles say they will not honor that request to ship him out of town. >> sam is our quarterback and we have been clear about that from the first time we had this conversation. whenever he comes back wheel well come him with open arms. it's the voluntary period of the off season. >> it gives us an opportunities to gift other guy some time, some reps. as soon as he gets back here we plug him in and we catch him up. >> reporter: let's move on down the street. the eagles are back in town. they have won six of their

high school boys had their chance to show off. they were among the thousands of talented youngsters all athletes competing in track and field at franklin field in university city at the university of pennsylvania. more than 22,000 athletes from around the world attend this three-day event. half of those are high school students. and thanks to parents and supporters, more than 110,000 spectators will be on hand to watch.

so tomorrow is not a bad day. however, the flip side, this is future tracker rainfall totals showing what we're expecting on sunday and we're looking at anywhere from about a half inch to close to three-quarters of an inch and the bulk of that will be falling the first half of the day so not good timing for the broad street run. it's going to be a wet run. right now it's damp and it's chilly. 50 degrees in philadelphia. the same in cape may. trenton 49. reading 51 and wilmington 51 degrees. satellite6 along with action radar showing that any steady lane has lifted north and east of our region. we're left with the clouds and some drizzle. however, i am tracking is powerful storm system that's rolling across the plains right now that is bringing severe weather, tornadoes in oklahoma and some snow in colorado. this system is moving our way. i don't expect any severe weather because we're going to be in the cool sector of the storm but it's going to bring a lot of rain. the call from accuweather for the tonight it will be cloudy

and chilly a little bit of drizzle but no heavy rain, nothing organized. 45 in philadelphia. 40 in allentown. fledge cap47 in cape may. tomorrow morning 9 o'clock lots of clouds but some breaks in the clouds. so we will see some sunshine. so not a bad day. as we head into the afternoon, still more clouds than sunshine but a few breaks, perhaps a few sprinkles north of the poconos. but then saturday night, this is when that rain moves in after midnight and sunday morning it's looking like a soaking rain around 7 o'clock the heaviest rain will be just west of philadelphia. it rolls through between 7:00 and 11 o'clock. still some rain especially north of philadelphia and then heading into the afternoon, it tapers off to scattered showers but still plenty of clouds and temperatures definitely will be on the cool side on sunday. so, if you are running the broad street run, dress for rain. it will be liquid sunshine. trying put an optimistic spin on this. it will be raw and chilly at
