temperatures spiked into the 80's and down to the south that is where they're expecting some severe weather. in fact severe thunderstorm watches for parts of western virginia and virginia. locally nothing happening at the present time on double scan live radar. we're not expecting much in the way of any rainfall until closer to that 9 o'clock or 10 o'clock hour tonight. look to the south and west, decent amount of lightning in this area. over a thousand lightning strikes in the last 15 minutes. all this is aiming in our direction and we could hear rumble of thunder as this passes through during the overnight hours but the severe risk which earlier the storm prediction center out of norman, oklahoma they issued these across the country, they had our southern areas in the slight risk. that has been pushed way to the south and east. we're not looking at severe weather as this progresses through the region overnight tonight but again will bring quite a bit of rainfall. by 11 o'clock the rain intensifying especially in delaware chester county southern parts of lancaster

county and as we go through the next 12 to 18 hours, the key time will be 11:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. for that steadiest of the rain, even some torrential downpours, even an embedded heavy thunderstorm could pass through but again not looking to the severe side and we're looking at a good soaking here about three-quarters to as much as an inch and a quarter after seeing quite a bit of rain during the day yesterday. and after this passes by we'll catch a little break here tomorrow afternoon and then more showers through much of the week. we'll talk about the unsettled weather patter tern we have been stuck in coming up sharrie in full accuweather forecast. >> adam see you in a bit. with the potential for severe thunderstorms in the forecast be sure to keep 6abc.com/weather close at hand. storm tracker6 live radar is the perfect way to know when and where the heaviest storms will hit next. >> a second person has now died after a crash in east falls over the weekend. that wreck also claimed the life of a child and sent several other people to the

hospital. "action news"'s sarah bloomquist live at the scene this afternoon and sarah investigators gave us an update today on what they think caused this. >> reporter: well, brian police think the car carrying seven people including four children spun out on the wet pavement crossing the center line on the curve behind me. nobody in that car was restrained in any way as you said one adult and a young boy were killed from that car. five others remain in critical condition. balloons mark the spot where yesterday's horrific crash happened on henry avenue in east falls. they were placed there by janice thomas who was with her adult granddaughter when they came upon the collision just after 4:00 yesterday afternoon. she said people including two off duty police officers stopped to help. >> everybody chipped in. there were women who possibly were nurses who actually were assisting with the two little children and the gentleman on

the ground. you could see his leg was clearly broken but he had a huge laceration on the back of his head. >> reporter: that man 20-year-old sigh year ross wilson who had been in the back seat passed away last night. six-year-old eric barksdale perez had been ejected out the rear window. how pronounced dead a short time later. two women a driver an front seat passenger were also ejected from the car. ross wilson's seven week olds daughter was critically injured in the wreck along with two other boys ages four and five riding in the back seat. police said today their mazda six spun out across the center line colliding with a mazda three carrying two adult passengers. >> it didn't seem it was excessive speed. roadway was wet. you have to take the time when the road way is wet. >> reporter: also contributing to the severity of the injuries police say only the infant was restrained in a car seat. nobody else was wearing a seat belt or in a car seat as required bylaw. >> if everyone was restrained there clearly would be less

severe injuries for sure. maybe not anybody killed. >> for that many people to be in a car, the children weren't safe. and it's sad that it had to happen like this but for other people, please take a lesson from this. >> reporter: now t-the occupants of the other car are also in critical but stable condition. they were in fact wearing seat belts. police do not believe that either driver was impaired in any way. live in east falls, i'm sarah bloomquist channel6 "action news. sharrie. >> sarah, thank you. a pennsylvania judge is considering whether to grant an appeal hearing to jerry sandusky. the former penn state assistant football coach appeared in center county court today. he says he was unfairly convicted of molesting children and he wants a new trial. sandusky's team says he had

ineffective counsel. the judge concluded with outmaking a decision outside the courthouse reporters heard a letter written by sandusky himself. >> i am an innocent man serving what amounts to a life sentence. people have betrayed, attacked and vilified family, supporters and me. >> reporter: "action news" reporter chad pradelli will have more on sandusky's statement coming up tonight at 5 o'clock. >> jury selection began today in the corruption trial of long time pennsylvania congressman chaka fattah. the process begins less than a week after fattah lost his bid for reelection. "action news" reporter vernon odom now live in center city with more on the case today. vernon. >> reporter: good evening, brian. several hundred potential jurors spent this day inside the ceremonial courtroom here in the first floor at the federal courthouse building here in olde city and enduring and that is the right word,

the lengthy screening process as judge harvey bartle and the lawyers involved went over the questionnaires fill out this morning. several dozen have been dismissed late today. the rest will return here to the federal courthouse in the morning. the 11 term congressman lost his bid for a 12th term last week. the corruption charges cost him his seat. his federal trial could last eight weeks. well into summertime. fattah and four associates including former staff members are charged with racketeering, wire fraud, mail fraud, bank fraud, bribery and money laundering. fattah was a member of the powerful house appropriations committee bringing home millions of dollars from that washington for housing, scholarships, transportation and crime prevention. now the federal prosecutor accuses him of being a crook of accepting bribes and misusing campaign funds and charitable grants to enrich family and friends. fattah calls the seven year fbi probe a political witch hunter. he says he's done nothing

wrong. his son chaka fattah is in federal prison the result avenue private sector fraud scheme. because of chaka fattah's enduring high profile 400 potential jurors are being screened today through question fairs and direct questioning by court officials. this jury selection process could go on for several more days. a two month trial like this generates plenty of hardship claims from the jury pool. the actual trial itself with testimony and opening statements is set now for may 16th. live at the federal courthouse in olde city, i'm vernon odom, channel6 "action news." >> all right, vernon, thank you. now to a big story that we're following out of new jersey today. despite the fact that it's running on fumes, a financially strapped atlantic city did find a way to make its $1.8 million bond payment today. mayor don guardian held a press conference this morning saying that even though

they're what he calls teetering on the edge they did not want to be the first municipality to default on its debt since fort lee did in the 1930's. guardian says this will not affect payroll or school payments but they did as guard onput it have to rummage through the sofa cushions to scrape together this money. >> we're trying to get through day to day. we've stop making purchases weeks ago. we certainly haven't replaced any staff for any reason through attrition. there is no -- any additional payroll without undue circumstances and so, yeah, we're doing a type where we understand how important these payments are to make. >> reporter: things are pretty tight around there right now the state senate has passed a takeover plan supported by governor chris christie but guardian is standing his ground against it saying his city would be completely shut out and not have what he calls a seat at the table. now the state assembly has its own plan that would give

atlantic city two more years to get its financial situation in line. now, that could come up for a vote on thursday. meanwhile governor christie did not mince words today asking whether guardian "wants a medal for making a debt payment and saying that he's confident they're in such rough shape that this will not be the case next month. so, some fighting words today and certainly a situation for atlantic city to work out. sharrie and brian. >> yeah, ongoing saga one we'll continue to follow. it is time now for the "action news" traffic report. >> all right, let's send it over to matt pelman in the "action news" traffic center on monday afternoon. hey, matt. >> we could be in better shape as we start the new work week, starter the new motorails this afternoon brian and sharrie. already we're seeing 20 minute delays across-the-board on the septa regional rails because of some signal problems so your train good chance it might be late this afternoon and don't forget the a.c. rail line is not running all week until friday at least between 30th street station and pennsauken.

you're on the buses instead of the trains because of work on the delair bridge and then during the overnights that busing extends which cherry hill. that lasts all this work week on njt's ac rail line. dry along the roosevelt boulevard but wow is it couldn't jested in both directions here by roberts avenue. northbound backing up like it usually does headed up towards broad street. southbound busy headed down towards fox. farther north there are a couple accidents on the boulevard, one southbound at red line, another northbound at conwell avenue with typical speeds in the 20's as you sit through the traffic lights. we had a bus accident in north philadelphia that just cleared at second and ontario but in tacony watch out for a crash along levick at torresdale. there was one on 95 northbound, it's gone now near cottman but speeds are still slow and in glassboro a crash on 322 near lehigh road. let's do the commuter report on this monday afternoon. we just saw 2 miles per hour here on 422 eastbound as you come out of berks county near douglassville. major crash report there had

>> with the water crisis in flint, michigan fresh on the public's mind there's a new initiative in new jersey to test the water in every single public school. and to let parents know whether it's safe for their kids to drink. today governor chris christie says he will require every single one of the state's public schools to test for lead starting next school year. so he's asking the legislature for $10 million to pay for this mandatory testing.

this follows an announcement back in march that indicates testing did find levels of lead in half of the school buildings in newark. christie says this mandate takes the testing process one step further. >> they've been required already to deliver by regulation safe drinking water to everybody in the school. that's already a requirement. what we're saying now is we're going to require you to test and publish the results of throws tests to parents and to the public so that they know. >> so if lead is detected christie says it's up to the individual school district to decide how to handle it. the state does not have a say in that matter. in camden, for instance, lead was detector back in 2002. rather than update the pipes there which can get costly they he switched to bottled water. so just one example but that testing will be mandatory for the whole state now. sharrie. >> safety precautions. i'm sure parents are in favor for that one. alicia thank you. prince's family went to court today to begin sorting out what will happen with the

superstar's fortune. during the brief hearing in minnesota the judge confirmed brimmer trust will manage prince's multi-million dollars evident estate. they have not found a will but plan to continue searching. the cause of death's sudden death remains under investigation. >> the presidential candidates are stumping for last minute support today in indiana. that state's primary tomorrow could be make or break for ted cruz's campaign. he made a number of appearances today and even tried to sway donald trump supporters away from the frontrunner. but despite endorsement from indiana's governor cruz is trailing trump by double digits. >> the entire country is looking to indiana and really depending on indiana to pull us back from this cliff that we're staring over. >> now the indiana primary is also a must win for bernie sanders. he's slightly behind hillary clinton right now but even if he loses, he says he will not concede before the democratic convention in philadelphia and today he even predicted that

will be a contested conventio convention. >> sports authority has decided to close all of its stores nationwide. the company is more than a billion dollars in debt. it announced two months ago it plans to close 140 stores but now executives say they will sell off its remaining assets rather than filing for bankruptcy and trying to reorganize. sports authority had hold an auction on may 16th. a potential buyer could decide to reopen some locations saving some of the companies' 14,500 jobs. now here's a look at today's closing numbers and we start this work week with good news here. the dow up more than 117 points, the nasdaq is up more than 42 and the s & p 500 is up more than 16 points. gnc may be considering a say. the company says it has hired gold plan sacks to advise it as it looks for a way forward. that could include taking on financial partners or looking for a buyer. the company is worth about

3-pointer $1 billion but its earnings and projections last week disappointed investors and dropped the company stock 29 percent. >> it was very wet sunday. >> you know firsthand. >> that's right. everyone else who ran broad street, what troopers were out there yesterday but we're tracking a little bit more in the way of rain this afternoon. >> yeah. looks like we're in a bit avenue patent let's head to meteorologist adam joseph for the details. >> we're stuck in the muck so to speak and that's going to continue through much of the week. a rounder of heavy rain passing through and today pretty gloomy as we look live on sky6 at the commodore barry bridge and there's a little bit of blue trying to develop bust commodore barry bridge. there are some brightening spots developing in many locations especially south and west of philadelphia. storm tracker6 live double scan despite that it looks gleam mee ougloomy we're not sey rain full and that continues all the way down 95 to baltimore and washington and that is where the rain will be

approaching and moving in later on this evening. it's 59 in allentown, 71 in reading but where we're seeing some brighter spots lancaster is up to 65 degrees, same for dover, 71 i 61 in wilmington, bh haven temperatures only in the upper 50's. as we look at satellite and radar, again there's some of the brightening that's developing to the south and west trying to inch in but just took a little too long today and when we broke out into sunshine in western virginia and west virginia severe thunderstorm watch has been posted and you're starting to see some of those storms fire up down there and all of this will be pushing in our direction overnight tonight, not expecting severe weather but we could see the rumble of thunder or hear it, see some lightning flashes but everyone getting torrential rain overnight. so, temperature-wise we should stop between about 51 and 55 degrees as that heavy rain arrives, even some thunderstorms south of philadelphia especially in fact as we take a look at future tracker 10 o'clock

tonight some of that rain developing, heavy at times philadelphia wilmington points to the south and to the west. at 1 o'clock in the morning it overtakes the lehigh valley and the poconos and there you can see southern new jersey, delaware getting the heaviest round of rain or a quick thunderstorm. could wake you up right after the midnight hour. even tomorrow morning at 6:00 a.m. for the start of that rush hour, it is going to be a mess with some ponding other roadways, still heavy -- on the roadways still heavy rain around but 9 o'clock in the morning tail end of the rush hour rain lifts out lingering showers and that continues into tomorrow afternoon. clouds hanging on. heavy rain gone but there could be a spitting shower tomorrow afternoon. when you take a look at how much rain is expected with the four different models that we really kind of look at here, we're on either side of an inch so it is a good soaking pushing in. as we take a look at that four day at 4:00 forecast, not so bright. morning rain tomorrow giving way to afternoon clouds or a

about how to make debt work for you, ask me. >> ♪ >> we are still working to learn the name of the teenaged girl who was stabbed this morning in burlington county. it happened around 12:30 this morning at a house on tanner avenue in burlington township. police say the 17-year-old victim showed up at the hospital with a stab wound on her back. she's in serious condition this afternoon. police have not said who did this or why. >> dozens of people are working to become law enforcement chaplains in delaware county. they attended training today at the radnor police department. the training program is intended to prepare the faith leaders for their specialized work. chaplains offer support to police officers and first responders and serve as part of a crisis response team.

sicklerville and nora, you've got reaction from parents today. >> reporter: i did indeed brian. this is the first day back at school after the announcement of the arrest on friday. this is the kind of case that upsets everyone because as one parent told me you want to believe your kids are safe at school. >> pretty stunned. scary to hear. >> reporter: megan crown of sicklerville has a daughter in seventh grade at anne mullen middle school in gloucester township. that's where 65-year-old sixth grade social studies teacher chester ingram is accused of sexually assaulting a female student under the age of 13. he's also been charged with endangering the welfare of a child. >> you trust these teachers with your children and you are always so afraid you tell them not to talk to strangers, you tell them to respect their elders and their teachers and then you hear something like this. >> reporter: police are releasing few details about the case. school district officials say they contacted authorities when they learned of the allegations and the teacher was immediately removed from the classroom suspended and ordered to remain off school

grounds. no one answered the door at ingram's home today but i did reach him by phone. engram told me he could not comment on the charges and referred me to his lawyer. bob egan confirmed he's on administrative leave and that the incident is al thirty seven have taken place at thely. >> from what i know he was nice but i never heard anything bad about him but i think also -- i don't know what the whole story was and i think the story needs to be put into context. >> it makes you wonder that it could be other kids definitely, i'm sure if there's one there's more. >> reporter: now the camden county prosecutor's office would only say that the investigation is continuing. ingram's wife is a long time teacher in the district who was named teacher of the year in degrees. live in sicklerville, i'm nora muchanic, channel6 "action news." sharrie. >> nora, thank you. a driver whose car slammed into a bucks county home has been arrested and charged with a long list of crimes.

matthew markel is accused of going 104 in a 35 miles an hour zone. he crashed into a bensalem living room on april 10th. remarkably the husband and wife who live there were not hurt. markel is being charged with criminal mischief reckless endangerment and leaving the scene of a crash. police say 32-year-old kashif bailey is the intruder who terrified residents in pine hill, new jersey, yesterday. he allegedly broke into four dirt apartments at the mansions apartment complex while screaming someone was trying to kill him. at one point he locked himself in a bedroom with three sleeping children but jumped out of a window when their mother called police. officers found bailey on a balcony and arrested him. >> a coast guard crew braved some pretty rough weather to rescue a fisherman off the coast of atlantic city this week. the 63-year-old man needed medical attention while aboard a scallop boat. a crew from the atlantic city

station lowered a basket and successfully hoisted that man up onto their helicopter. despite the deteriorating weather and low lying clouds, the crew was able to land safely and you are looking there at one very grateful fisherman. >> close call for him. >> yeah. >> wow. do you even want to talk about that. >> speaking of water there's a lot of it coming this week here locally. >> okay. >> as we take a look outside live at sky6 right now a little brightening as you can see trying to develop here just above center city skyline but it's still a lot of gray in that picture. 61 degrees, the wind is calm which can't break up some of that cloud cover but we are seeing the sun return in southern new jersey. you see the sun splashing there at our beach cam in ocean city. 66 degrees is the temperature, a little warmer with a little more sun and the ocean temperature sitting at 53. we look at double scan live radar not in its radar mode, more of the satellite mode and you can see some of those

still under investigation. >> a thief was caught on camera making off with cash from a germantown game stop store. philadelphia police released this video today showing how the crime played out friday morning inside the location on the 5300 block of chew avenue. with his hood up and face covered the thief demanded that two workers open the registers. well, they didn't he helped himself to all of the money inside. police say he acted as if he had a weapon but neither employee actually saw one. the man then left the scene and has not yet been caught. >> 1100 back packs proved to be an emotional exhibit at the university of delaware. all of them acted as a symbol of a college student who committed suicide within the past year. the exhibit is called send silence packing. its goal is to offer people help before it's too late and to end the stigma about mental health struggles good there are some new concerns about injuries among children. two dangers in particular being singled out by

>> ♪ >> there is no word just yet this afternoon as teachers in detroit michigan will hold another sickout tomorrow. nearly all the public schools in that city were closed today because thousands of teachers called out sick. the teachers are protesting a school funding crisis. this week the district revealed it will not have enough money to continue paying those teachers this summer unless the state provides extra funding. the teachers union plans to meet tomorrow. >> a u.s. cruise ship made history today when it docked in havana cuba. carnival crews liner named adonia was the first cruise to dock there in nearly 40 years. spectators holding the cuban and american flags gathered to welcome the ship as it pulled in this morning. the ship's arrival is the first step towards possibly allowing thousands of ships a

year to cross the florida straits. investigators trying to figure out what sparked a fire that destroyed a historic church in new york city and they're calling the fire suspicious. flames could be seen coming from the 160-year-old serbian cathedral of saint sava around 7 o'clock last night. in just hours earlier parishioners had celebrated orthodox easter in that very same church. four firefighters and a church groundskeeper suffered minor injuries in that fire. >> there is an incredible story coming out of ecuador today. an elderly man is recovering at a hospital after being trapped in earthquake rubble for almost two weeks. a humanitarian team found 72-year-old manuel vasquez under pieces of the building he lived in. officials say he survived for 13 days before he was found on friday. no word on his condition. but he was suffering from chronic kidney failure dehydration and malnutrition. the april 16th, 7.8 magnitude

earthquake killed 654 people. >> at the big board with big talkers now and hey, there's too much ice and not enough coffee in my iced coffee. that's one woman's $5 million allegation against starbucks. chicago resident stacey pincus filed proposed class action lawsuit against the company claiming it is deceiving customers by loading up the cubes. for instance pincus says in a vente cup you should of you should get 24 ounces of whatever cold drink you ordered but too much ice cheats you into getting just 14 ounces. the lawsuit also takes issue with the fact that iced drinks cost more even though they have less total liquid. starbucks says the claims are without merit and that typically people understand that in order to create an iced beverage you need ice and, well, ice cubes take up space. but they'll redo your drink if you have a problem with it.

could you. >> basically hit the repeat button every single day to some degree here but we have some heavy rain coming in overnight tonight. as we look at double scan live radar presently not much in the way of any precipitation. it's been a little mist or drizzle in spots through the early morning hours into the early afternoon hours and now even some sunshine returning south and west of philadelphia. with the clouds still hanging on it's 57 quakertown, 62 levittown, center city 63 degrees but you're seeing some 67's, 64, parts of lancaster chester county where that sun is returning slowly from the southwest to the north and east. again, cooler in northern parts and central parts of new jersey, 60 in browns mills, ewing 60 degrees. far southern parts of new jersey in delaware where that sun is back, temperatures have responded went to 70 and 75 degrees from smyrna to dover, even vineland 67 and woodbine as well as sea isle city in the upper 60's to near 70. the sun is out in full force

in maryland as well as virginia. that is where we see a severe thunderstorm watch now blossoming with the wet weather approaching, kind of acting and reacting with that sunshine to give some severe weather to the south. thankfully we're not going get severe weather. we could see a thunderstorm overnight but really it's a general heavy rain that arrives between about 8:00 and 11 o'clock tonight. again, there could be some thunder especially new jersey and delaware where there is a little more instability during the overnight hours. 51 to 55 for that low temperature. future tracker at 9 o'clock tonight seeing some of that rain developing right on the verge of center city, wilmington, chester county, points into maryland, southern lancaster county but it really blossoms here around the midnight hour. could wake you up with some of this heavy rain. again the flash of lightning, the rumble of thunder but again, not expecting any widespread severe weather. that stays over virginia and then 7 o'clock tomorrow morning, it is heavy rain across much of the area if not some steady light rain for that morning rush so pack the

where "action news" reporter walter perez is live with all the details. walter. >> reporter: hey, guys. the scene has since been cleared here at the intersection of shillington road and spone road in spring township berks county. the kids were all middle schoolers but we're happy to report that while several were taken to the hospital no serious injuries to report. it happened right around 2:30 this afternoon. the bus filled with 36 middle school students from the wilson school district were returning from a field trip. investigators say that's when this vehicle ran into the rear of the school bus as it crossed the intersection of shillington road and spone road in spring township berks county. 17 of the students were taken to nearby hospitals but we're told none of the students was seriously injured. the driver of the car was also taken to the hospital. no word tonight on that person's condition. emergency crews did set up a triage area several feet away from the accident scene so the st
