accepting bribes. the veteran congressman lost his reelection bid in the april primary. today, he went into federal court to battle nearly 30 corruption charges that include racketeering bank fraud conspiracy mail fraud and bribery all the government says to enrich himself and his family paid out loans for his run for mayor of philadelphia 2007 and pay off his son's college tuition and gambling debts. >> i am extraordinarily appreciative of the great legal team from the firm that will be leading my effort here. >> reporter: the government's case is largely based around the cooperation of two of fattah's former operatives. they've entered guilty pleas and hope their cooperation here will get them leniency from the court. congressman fattah never looked alarmed as the government laid out its case to the jury.

mark lee his lawyer a former federal prosecutor says fattah is not guilty and the two former aides are out to save their own necks and their lack of credibility he says will be revealed here. brian, at this hour an fbi agent remains on the witness stand presenting various documents related to the case. the key government witnesses will not take the stand for quite some time down the road. this trial is expected to last about two months. live at the federal courthouse in center city, i'm vernon odom, channel6 "action news." >> all right, vernon thank you. we have breaking news right now out of gloucester county. this is the scene in franklin township in the 400 block of harding highway where firefighters are responding to an active fire right now. this is apparently a chicken coop burning also on route 40 again in franklin township. apparently 911 calls were coming in, reports of a brush fire in the area. when crews arrived they discovered it was a chicken

coop. no word at this point if any animals have been injured as a result but we just lost the shot. we'll continue to update you as news breaks on that. a former professor at the university of pennsylvania who was convicted of killing his ex-wife was denied parole today. rafael rabb lost his bid for early release in norristown. he killed his ex-wife ellen rabb inside their king of prussia home back in 2006. now that the parole bordenave his request, the montgomery county d.a.'s office says robb will likely serve the rest of his 10 year sentence. >> one person is dead after a car caught fire on a south jersey highway today and police are still trying to figure out how it all happened. chopper6 was over route 55 in franklin township where police say a car caught fire just before 8 o'clock this morning. police say they showed up to find the car in flames and the driver had already passed away. they have not told us the have ick tim's name.

they also say there are no obvious signs that this car was in an accident prior. rescue crews had to help out today in delaware county after police found a car in the water there. chopper6 was over stevens drive in tinicum township where a car went into darby creek. police say the driver was on i-95 when he went off the road and into the water. he's in the hospital and is expected to make it. police have not told us his name, either. >> lot of sunshine out there and if you stand in the sunshine, you feel the warmth but once you're out of it -- >> because it's windy, also. >> yeah. >> let's head outside to meteorologist adam joseph. hi adam. >> it is windy but at least it's sunny but we've recovered quite nicely especially after those cold morning lows. as we take a look at the numbers where we started this morning, record tieing in allentown, 37 degrees, same for trenton at 40. a record in millville. it dropped just above the freezing point 30's for wilmington lancaster and reading. in philadelphia we pretty much

bottomed out around 42 degrees, 2 degrees above our record. but we're 65 right now, again, if you're in the sun it feels pretty nice but the breeze continues to kick up. 54 right now in buffalo and you can see 60's from washington richmond down to charleston, west virginia. it is clear now but there are clouds building in parts of the western areas of virginia, west virginia, ohio and tennessee valley. a frontal boundary will spill clouds our way overnight and will bring us a round of showers as we go foo tuesday, so damp dreary tomorrow but it does turn beautiful for the end of the week before the weekend turns very unsettled as it's looking right now. we'll talk about more rain coming in with that accuweather forecast in just a little bit. >> all right, adam, thank you. a fallen philadelphia police officer got a memorable and meaningful honor today. president obama posthumously awarded the medal of valor to robert wilson, iii. john rawlins live.

>> reporter: somber moments in the east room today of the white house. robert wilson, iii was the first philadelphia police officer to receive this national award when he was killed in action last year he was 30 years old, the father of two. >> may god bless you and your families, may god bless our fallen heroes. may god bless the united states of america. >> reporter: at the white house the president awarded the public safety officer medal of valor to 12 officers deputies and agents who survived dangerous encounters. one however was given posthumously to philadelphia sergeant robert wilson, iii. on a day in 2015 wilson was inside this game stop store when two armed robbers entered. >> two men opened fire in a video store where sergeant wilson was buying his son a birthday present. to his family who is here, his grandmother constance, his brother and sister, please know how deeply sorry we are for your loss. >> reporter: constance wilson received the medal from the president who then

embraced her. at the time of his death officials said by not moving for cover in the gun battle he drew the fire away from customers and staff huddled behind the counter. following today's ceremony in washington constance wilson reflected on the past 14 months. >> like it just happened today. we always think about him. we cry and all but big hole was put in my heart when he lost his life but he loved his job and he did what he was trained to do. >> reporter: well, the gun battle was very intense but apparently fairly short. only about 30 seconds. officer wilson was outnumbered two to one. he was hit multiple times. live in the sat center john rawlins channel6 "action news." alicia. >> powerful tribute a hero. john thank you. well, at least 5,000 students filed into franklin field today for the university of pennsylvania's 260th commencement and they heard a pretty inspiring message from the man behind the hottest show on broadway. this year's speaker was lynn

man well miranda the pulitzer prize tony and grammy award winning composer best known for hamilton. the groundbreaking hip hop musical about the nation's founding father. now during his address, he apologized for the fact that the show never mentions pennsylvania or philadelphia by name but he did take a moment to list many of our city's contributions to america. >> you are known as the birthplace of louisa may allicott rocky balboa, boys to men, betsy ross, will smith, isaac asimov, tina fey, cheesesteaks and you can have scrapple, soft pretzels and wawa hoagies whenever you want. you win, philly. the roosevelt boulevard and as the traffic was stopped, this vehicle broke down here in the westbound left lane. so police are now assisting but you can see it is taking out the left lane. stay to the right as you head west on the schuylkill expressway. then farther west another complication another broken down vehicle by 202 in king of prussia blocking one of the express lanes there but you can see the slower speeds at this point are on the eastbound side of the schuylkill as you come off 202 and do that infamous merge, other people coming away from pennsylvania turnpike it always clogs up in that neck of the wood. can coming into pennsylvania from new jersey, problems on the scudder falls bridge this afternoon here along 95 southbound. it's an accident taking out the right lane right on the bridge so everyone is funneling into that left lane and things are slow going coming out of mercer county as a result. and in gloucester county still have a crash on 55 northbound side past deptford so speeds there are in the 20's. also still have the shuttle buses running today on ac's rail line. the njt ac rail line.

she boarded for a four day trip to mexico. surveillance video shows her sitting on a deck railing and then falling into the gulf of mexico a day after leaving texas. the 33-year-old was reported missing hours later. word of her disappearance was extremely upsetting to the other passengers. >> everybody on the ship, everybody was really, really sad about it. and people were crying. i know that we were crying in our room. it was just really devastating to hear. >> the coast guard scoured 4300 square miles before calling off the search. federal investigators are in south texas working to determine what caused a charter bus to crash. eight people were killed and 44 others were injured when the bus rolled over on saturday. today the bus driver was released from the hospital and was interviewed by investigators. the ntsb says they plan on filing their report in the upcoming two weeks. >> the obama administration is stepping in now to help negotiate an end to the verizon strike.

u.s. labor secretary thomas perez says union leaders have agreed to return to the bargaining table tomorrow with verizon executives. workers walked off the job more than a month ago back on april 13th. they have been working without a contract since august. the union turned down verizon's last offer of a seven and a half percent raise and protection from layoffs. a look at today's closing numbers and we start with the dow up significantly today, 175 points. the nasdaq up 58 points. the s & p 500 also up just about 20 points to start the work week. tonight on "action news" at 11:00 a big boom in construction can sometimes leave a big mess behind. investigative reporter went see saltzman found that not every contractor is playing by the rules. here's a preview of her special report. >> reporter: junk garbage and debris cluttering our streets and where you live, a blight to our community. 65 degrees. the normal now is 74, so what we felt on saturday is a little more typical than the last 48 hours. in fact, days with high temperatures in the 50's for philadelphia, we've had six so far this month going halfway through the month. we haven't had that many days stuck in the 50's for highs since 1978 and temperatures right now are averaging close to 4 degrees below normal. presently it's 65 for allentown, reading, lancaster. those areas started in the 30's this morning, so a pretty decent recovery. 64 in millville so pretty uniform everywhere even at the shore with those winds out of the north and west. in fact, still gusting right now to 30 miles an hour in philadelphia, 26 in millville, near 30 at the atlantic city airport and 25 for reading as well as lancaster. as we look at satellite and radar, crystal clear sky right now but clouds are increasing to the south and west. this is ahead of a frontal boundary that will be pushing in from the south late tonight in the form of clouds and then eventually some rain tomorrow.

so, lows tonight will be a good 10 or so degrees warmer than last night. 46 in the lehigh valley, 48 in wilmington. 51 philadelphia. 50 for dover and it's due in part because of those clouds coming in acting like an atmospheric blanket its a dry start to your tuesday morning rush hour. the clouds are here so not dealing with sun glare but the showers will increase during the morning into the early afternoon hours at 1:30 as some of these showers pass by, not a lot of heavy rain but another cloudy, dreary, damp day. in fact as we look at that four day at 4:00 forecast tomorrow's temperature 62 degrees as showers develop. early showers on wednesday will give way to a brighter afternoon, 66 degrees and the end of the week is a winner. sunny, nice both thursday and friday with temperatures right where they should be 72 to 74 degrees. but then major changes arrive here in time for the weekend. we'll talk about just what we're expecting with that seven-day in the next half hour. >> all right. we expect nothing less than

it happened just before midnight near moore and south hollywood. police say the victim is 17 years old but they've not yet said anything about a possible motive for this violent crime. he's in the hospital in extremely critical condition. police have not yet made any arrests. police in south jersey are looking for two women who stole from a sicklerville grocery storely they gave us surveillance pictures from inside the shop rite on cross keys road. the two women took about $600 in groceries on saturday and then left without paying. police released a picture of the car the women were driving. anyone who knows anything about this crime is asked to come forward. u.s. senator bob casey visited montgomery county today to push the passage of the speakup act. senator casey stopped by mission kids in east norriton a nonprofit helping alleged victims of sexual and physical abuse. the speakup act would require doctors teachers and coaches to report suspected abuse of children directly to the state.

failure to comply could cost states federal funding to respond to abuse claims. their uniforms are blue but apparently their thumbs are green. some members of the philadelphia police department spent the morning sprucing up the outside of police headquarters by planting some flowers. the planting is in honor of national police week which pays tribute to members of law enforcement who have lost their lives in the line of duty. >> the revitalization at kennedy university hospital in cherry hill is one step closer to being completed. workers put the final beam in place at the new atrium lobby during a topping off ceremony today. this is seen as a major milestone in the first phase of that revitalization project. the $200 million construction project is set to be wrapped up sometime in 2017. >> and still ahead on "action news" here at 4 o'clock, tragedy strikes a cumberland county high school. we have the very latest and the investigation into the crash that killed two students who had just attended their

women. >> the force is with this new jersey couple can. see how they transformed the camden county wedding venue in a galaxy far, far away. >> plus a broken pipe not only collapses part of a road it also sends water flowing into a philadelphia firehouse. >> ♪ >> but first at 4:30 we've got breaking news. national transportation safety board has finished their investigation into the deadly amtrak derailment last year. sources tell "action news" the engineer was distracted at the time of that crash. eight people were killed, more than 200 others were injured. federal investigators will release their complete findings tomorrow. "action news" will be live in washington and of course we'll have updates on air and online. >> also now at 4:30 students are doing their best to console each other after two of their bridgeton high school classmates died in a crash over the week. the teens had been to their prom when hours later the driver lost control and hit a tree.

"action news"'s walter perez is live at the school with more on the victims family and friends, what they're saying today, walter. >> reporter: that's right, sharrie, as you would imagine it was a very somber day here at bridgeton high school. we spoke with school officials some of the victims' friends and we also spoke with the parents of one of the teenagers who died this past weekend. it was back to class today for students at bridgeton high school but it was not back to normal. that goes double for mikayla mosley's father mark. >> she was just so outgoing. people person. funny. just -- just shy. >> reporter: 15-year-old mikayla and her close friend 17-year-old daisia salt ton were killed early saturday morning. this memorial marks the spot where darbies vehicle veered off route 49 in maurice river township and slammed into a tree. they and two other people inside that vehicle were coming home from the shore following their high school

prom on friday night. mikayla's mom says she cannot believe that someone so full of life is gone. >> she was loved by everybody. she was like a ray of sunshine. when she came in the room everybody knew sh she was there. >> reporter: grief counselors and clergy members were on hand at the high school as classmates and friends remember two young ladies who were always willing to help others in need. >> nobody was talking. everybody was crying. i was crying because how much i missed them and how much they did a lot for me helping me with my work and what i was doing. >> reporter: those sentiments are shared by mikayla's parents who say they've lost something truly unique and wonderful. >> we lost our light. >> i lost my helper. >> helper. she just was -- we lost our -- >> right hand. >> we lost our love. >> reporter: now regarding the two other teenagers inside that vehicle at last check, 16-year-old zaiaya stocks remains in that stable

condition. 17-year-old jada barrientos remains in critical condition at cooper university hospital much new jersey state police are still working to determine exactly why darby have a sulton lost control. toxicology results are expected sometime in early next month. reporting live from bridgeton high school, walter perez channel6 "action news." sharrie. >> okay, walter, thank you. a store manager is recovering after being stabbed on the job this morning. police say it happened during a robbery at the dollar general on the 900 block of girard in north philadelphia. we don't know how it all played out but the 24-year-old manager ended up getting stabbed in the arm. the suspects grabbed cash and then took off from the scene. no one has been arrested. >> upper darby want police catching a man who took pictures up a woman's skirt while she was standing in line. the suspect as you saw there put his cell phone right under the victim's skirt and took several pictures.

she felt someone touch her leg so she turn around and confronted the man who then ran off. if you recognize this guy, please contact upper darby police. >> a firehouse in west philadelphia has spent the day cleaning up from a flood. a water main break on market street near 43rd sent water flowing into the basement of the engine five ladder six station. that area is usually used as a sports club and lounge. part of market street buckled during the break so traffic is being redirected in that area. the water department says it will take them until tomorrow morning to fix that pipe. >> meteorologist adam joseph joining us now with the first look at the forecast for the rest of the week. >> dry roads today. >> yeah. >> okay. >> wet roads come back again tomorrow as rain pushes back in but let's just take in where we are right now because it's a beautiful thing on sky6 live, philadelphia international airport not a cloud to be found. 65 degrees. bone dry air with that dewpoint back into the 20's.

last week when it felt humid those dewpoints were in the 60's, winds out of the west 22 miles an hour and the pressure of 30.11 but it has been extremely windy the last 24 to 36 hours, today gusting to 37 miles an hour in philadelphia. 36 in reading, 33 for trenton and in the mid 30's for wrightstown as well as millville, so pretty uniform across most of the area. new team in town against the phillies, the marlins tonight 7:05, mostly clear, a little breezy early but that wind should start to die down as you get closer towards the ninth inning as temperatures drop from 63 to 57 degrees and those clouds eventually are going to bring in some showers as we push into your tuesday we'll let you know the timing of that rain and also there is quite a bit of a break coming in at the end of the week with some warmer temperatures. we'll have that full accuweather 7-day forecast coming up in just a little bit. >> all right. >> adam thank you very much. breaking news out of juniata park.

chopper6 over the scene as fire crews battle a house fire. the flames broke out just about 10 minutes ago near the 1600 block of hunting park avenue. firefighters said they saw heavy flames coming from the upper floors of that two-story structure. it is the middle building in a series of row houses. as you can see they appear to have gotten some of the flames under control at this point, though by no means do we know if the fire is under control. no reports of any injuries right now but we're monitoring this breaking situation in juniata park a house fire at a row home right now. >> there is a new crime fighting tool in the city of wilmington. the police department opened the realtime crime center on north walnut street today. wilmington mayor dennis williams got a firsthand look at how it all works. police say the center will improve information sharing and response times. the system is also compatible with license plate readers. the city plans to install them in the near future.

>> camden county officials are investigating a fish store after a hazmat scare put nearly a dozen employees at risk. headed to the caribbean and then to the united states. 50 officers backed up by helicopters overhead uncovered all of this at a banana plantation. now investigators say one of colombia's most powerful drug gangs is behind this. four men were arrested and the u.s. is offering $5 million for information leading to the arrests of that gang's leader. the u.s. supreme court avoided issuing a major ruling on the affordable care act contraceptive mandate. the justices unanimously returned the religious group's appeals to the lower court. under the affordable care act even religiously affiliated nonprofit groups have to provide contraceptives to employees. >> in health check today at 4 o'clock relief from chronic back pain can be hard to find but a growing number of studies say meditation may do more than medication. about two dozen studies have shown that lower back pain

river between 202 and perry street stay over on hearty bush way to get around that tractor-trailer accident. had a broken down vehicle on the northeast extension southbound side approaching the lehigh valley. that just cleared out so both lance reopened there which is if news. on the big picture a few issues to watch out for in rhawnhurst some wires pulled down by a truck along large near cottman. have a crash in olde city at fourth and race. we have this broken down vehicle on the westbound side of 76 at 202 in king of prussia. it's blocking one of the express lanes but at this point not causing a whole lot of slowing. over in delanco some emergency construction going on on the northbound side of 130 at creek road there by breeze motors. right lane is out of commission and we had some incidents earlier this afternoon in gloucester county including a crash on 55 northbound and one on delsea drive. both of those though have cleared out. we will check it again brian and sharrie coming up in the 5 o'clock hour. >> all right matt thank you. >> meteorologist adam joseph standing by with that exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast next. >> ♪ ♪

and in mount pocono your temperature just 54 degrees. we started at 29 this morning in the mountains. as we look at satellite and radar, there is a frontal boundary now working into the u.s. canadian border just south of toronto north of closed. that will push in here during the day tomorrow. in addition to that we're also going have energy right now that you can see in the midsection of the country in the form of some showers. two the of them will merge as it pushes in here and that just means that we bring more rain into the picture but for tonight it's clear early this evening, clouds will thicken up a little bit later. 46 to 51, so no threat for frost or temperatures back into the 30's where most of us started this morning and then as we get into the tuesday, there's the front approaching, low pressure just east of saint louis and the western part of the tennessee valley. showers come in again during the morning into the afternoon, about a quarter to a half an inch with a high of just 62 degrees. and then the low slowly drifts to the south during the day on wednesday, so early showers on wednesday morning.

drier in the afternoon with some sun returning of 66 degrees. and then behind it high pressure is building and this high is going to be pretty strong , in fact gorgeous late in the week as this high moves in, sends the northerly wind and finally we get temperatures that are a little more typical for this time of year before more changes arrive over the upcoming weekend. the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast, showers developing tomorrow. kind of damp and dreary. again a quarter to a half an inch of rain at 62 degrees. early showers linger wednesday, then brighter in the afternoon of 66. and then as we ged into thursday, it is sunny, it is nice, 72 degrees, the one day off for the phillies and then another beauty here for philadelphia union in town on friday. 74 degrees. and then low pressure is going to develop to our south here on saturday. rain is likely through much of the day on saturday. some of it could turn heavy at times. 66 degrees. then low he could get stuck meaning that we have lingering showers on sunday with a high

the owner of the aquarium center at the commerce plaza two in clementon. his store has been shut down since may 9th when mercury was discovered inside a fish tank. the toxic substance was spread when employees tried to clean it out along with the dead fish inside. >> mercury he in itself is a -- is dangerous substance and any elevated exposure can cause sickness. >> reporter: including brain kidney damage and death. employees had to undergo a decontamination process including discarding all of their clothing. acceptable levels of mercury are .05 milligrams per cubic meter. the level on the store of the fish store was 10,000 times that. 12 employees at the store are having urine samples sent scott centers for disease control for testing. >> my staff, myself, my family, we were walking through it for five days. >> reporter: gloucester township police are leading the criminal investigation into who contaminated the
