following up on leads but many people say they will not feel safe until an arrest is made. >> hopefully they catch him. please catch him. somebody catch him. >> reporter: it is a nerve wracking time for many people living in west chester after police announce they're searching for a burglar who has targeted half a dozen homes if march through may. >> scares the daylights out of me am across the street our neighbors were robbed and their car was stolen and it was 4 o'clock in the morning and we were home in bed. >> reporter: police believe the bold burglar is acting alone and strikes during the hours of 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. while people are at home. in each case the victims have had their doors and windows locked. so far no one has been hurt or come face to face with that burglar. by the time they realize their home has been broken into the crook is long gone. >> it is fortunate that it doesn't appear that the suspect or suspects want a confrontationism police wander to make an arrest before anyone is h the deceptive burglar has not only broken into homes and stolen purses

wallets phones and electronics but four cars were also taken and eventually recovered. >> we do believe that the suspect knows the west chester borough very well. >> reporter: the crimes have rattled this community since a safety and many like lisa say they are increasing security at their homes. >> i'm concerned that they're not going to be caught. we now sleep with all of our blinds closed. we just order the a security s it should arrive by 2:30 today. we're doing everything we can. you put 1 foot on our property after dark every light on the outside comes on. my husband has that arranged. >> reporter: and police say none of the homes targeted had their alarms activated. also we can tell you at this point there is no surveillance capturing that burglar or burglars. police of course urging everyone to be on high alert. they say if you see anything suspicious don't hesitate to contact authorities. live in west chester, gray hall, channel6 "action news." rick. >> gray, thank you. we are following developing news tonight out of

washington. right now the white house is on a security alert after a shooting outside on the street. officials say that's where a uniformed secret service officer shot a man with a gun at around 3 o'clock this afternoon. still unclear why there person was armed. less than an hour ago the white house confirmed no one inside was injured. the president was not even there at the time. updates as we get them on our web site at 6abc.com. police in wilmington are offering up to $10,000 in reward money to track down the person who shot and killed a teenager just blocks from his school. 15-year-old brandon wingo was gunned down right after dismissal yesterday, should the three times in the head. today wingo's father, brad, spoke exclusively to "action news." he says he has no idea why brandon was targeted by a murderer. >> told him about, you know, hanging out with the wrong kids, boom, boom, boom, everything. most of the kids were just basketball players that he played with over the years and became friends with, you know, but as far as violence or anything like that, from what

i know, nothing. >> witnesses say a lone gunman fled from the scene on foot. wingo attended howard high school of technology, the same school where 16-year-old amy joyner-francis fell victim to a deadly fight in a bathroom last month. three students are facing charges in that case. >> dozens of people took to the streets in protest after delaware's attorneys general decided not to bring criminal charges against a wilmington police officer who shot a man in a wheelchair. >> hands up don't shoot. >> today protestors marched in downtown wilmington. they say the d.a. should have criminally charged four officers involved in jeremy mcdole's death. cell phone video here captured the incident last september. a delaware department of justice investigation found no probable cause to charge those officers. >> all right. we're just about a week and countering from memorial day and the unofficial start of summer and after a rough went weather-wise towns up and down

the jersey shore are hard at work getting ready for the seasonal crowds. new jersey correspondent more muriel bowser is live in ocean city tonight with the details. hi, nora. >> reporter: hi there, rick. we're here on the boardwalk in ocean city where it was crowded enough today, you would have thought summer had already started. we had sunny skies, people in shorts and t's all thrilled to see the sun and everyone is looking forward to next weekend. >> with the start of memorial day weekend just seven days away, shore towns are gearing up for the start of the summer season. in ocean city crews are sprucing up the lifeguard stands getting them ready to move to the beach. the water is still too chilly to do much swimming. >> we painter and fix and repair our stands, the boats, you know, try to give everything a fresh coat and stuff so we're ready to go. >> reporter: paula ashton of hainesport and her three children couldn't wait until next weekend. this unpacked their summer clothes and leaded to the shore today. >> definitely looking forward to their summer season ending school getting down to the beach getting do you ever this

do have that sea breeze with the wind off the ocean. the ocean temperature 59 degrees so temperatures around the beaches just in the low 60's so it's a friday night for your evening planner out on the town, it's going to be beautiful. at 7 o'clock, 71 degrees. by 9 o'clock, 66 and if you're staying out late by 11 o'clock, 63 degrees. we will see increasing clouds tonight but it will be dry tonight. the problem is that it's not going to stay dry tomorrow. double scan lie showing there's one low pressure heading towards the ohio valley. that will transform to a coastal low off the carolinas and that's what will be bringing us rain tomorrow. rain will be arriving around mid morning. if you have to get a run in do it early in the morning. heaviest from noon to 6 o'clock. looking at about a half inch to an inch and a half. shore gusts up to 40 miles an hour. i'll let you know when it clears out and we track temperatures in the 80's ahead in the accuweather forecast. rick. >> thank you. the number of pregnant women in the united states reported to have the zika virus has more than tripled

according to medical experts. the sends for disease control and prevention says the number has increased to 157. part of the increase is because the government has changed how it reports cases. all women who tested positive are counted even if they don't have symptoms. the president once again urged congress to take up his proposal to combat the bill. >> a bill that has sufficient funds to do the job. they should not be going off on recess before this is done. >> right now ctc officials say they have no evidence that anyone has gotten zika from being bitten by a mosquito in the continental u.s. but they are concerned about mosquito season coming up this summer. >> search crews in the mediterranean have found the first signs of wreckage after the crash of egyptair flight 804. meantime investigators are now taking a close look at the passenger list and questioning ground crew in paris. all in hopes of determine and the cause. officials say the plane claw headed from paris to cairo

>> time now for a check of our "action news" traffic report friday night. >> let's see what's rowing out there with matt pelman. >> happy friday rick and monica. welcome to friday evening on the schuylkill expressway. a parking lot as you can see here in the eastbound lanes in king of prussia coming off of 422 and 202 it's a long slow barely moving crawl at this point from 202 on into the conshohocken curve. don't know that i'd use the pennsylvania turnpike eastbound instead. there was an earlier crash by norristown that's now gone but just 15 miles per hour between valley forge and norristown so that, too, is a long slow crawl. if you can stay on some of the local roads like maybe south gulf or route 30 lancaster avenue those are probably better bets. couple inches with some fires this afternoon. a brush fire in mount laurel along the new jersey turnpike next to route 73. speed restrictions and speeds in the 20's. 295 northbound with a whole bunch of friday afternoon

>> two workers were rescued from a scaffold in new york city after it became stuck on the 14th floor. this morning nypd responded to calls after people saw the workers holding onto the broken scaffolding. you can see the scaffolding dangling from one side near the top of the building right there. rescue crews were able to pull the workers through the 12th floor window. fortunately they were not injured. well, the nutrition labels on the foods you buy will be easier to read thanks to a major overhaul. first lady michelle obama outlined the changes today. calories will be listed in bigger boulder type. added sugars linked to health problems will get their own line and serving sizes will be updated to take into account packaging size. it's the first major update to

food nutrition labels since their creation in 1994. manufacturers will have two years to comply. >> stocks closed higher on wall street putting the dow back in the green for the year but it was a bit of a sour end of the week for most investors. [bell tolls] went with the down in positive territory the index still posted its first four week losing streak for the first time since 2014. the dow jones gained 65 points by the closing bell. the nasdaq rose 57 points the s & p 500 up 12. unemployment rate in pennsylvania has suffered a bill set back: the jobless rate roseo 5.3 percent. >> plenty people in purple to straw draw attention to a

think the first may lead to the other but in this case the training boxers do to get ready for a fight can help people with parkinson's. that's the goal of a program called rock steady boxing. 52-year-old susan quinn is fighting back against the disease that has slowly weakened her right side. she's always been active. >> biking, hiking, everything. >> reporter: she doesn't want to give that up. but two years ago she was diagnosed with parkinson's. a neurological disease that typically gets worse over time. now she's going through an assessment with physical therapist carol leaper and former professional boxer joey. >> we look for balance. that's the main thing. >> he says soon quinn and dozens of others will enroll in rock steady boxing classes. it's a program that's started in indianapolis. the local parkinson's counties sim has expanded it here in

philadelphia. it uses noncontact boxing fitness to help slowly progression of the disease and relieve symptoms. stretching helps lessen stiffness in the upper body. punching can help steady tremors and the foot work helps improve balance and coordination. >> with boxing they have to keep moving their feet, they're shifting their weight. >> reporter: leaper says it also gives them a sense of empowerment. quinn is eager to start. she's hoping it will slow the progression of her disease and allow her to live as she likes to live. he also owns jolt and jabs and calls his students and rock steady becoming warriors. >> seeing these people with this disease, i see them and i fist pump them and they he get fired up and man it brings -- it makes me so happy. >> reporter: and the program will have different level classes depending on the severity of the symptoms. it's not a cure but it has been shown to help.

registration opens may 31st. the cost is $255 which includes 10 classes, a t-shirt and equipment. we have all this information on 6abc.com. rick and monica. >> nice story. >> thank you ali. >> thanks ali. >> we have breaking news right now from new jersey. this is mount laurel camden county. fire crews battling a brush fire along the new jersey turnpike. you can see from chopper6 still some active flames here. the fire was reported along the side of the turnpike at exit four. fortunately no injuries and no evacuations and the turnpike is running normally but fire crews are still trying to get a handle on this. as you see multiple sites with active fire and the white smoke could eventually impact the flow of traffic but for now things are moving all right and we'll be right back with more. stay with us.

>> time for accuweather at the "action news" big board. >> meteorologist cecily tynan here with the changing accuweather wood. hey seals. >> hi, monica and rick. unfortunately tomorrow is not going to be anything like today but enjoy this weather while you can. sky6 taking a look live, cape may and this is something we haven't seen all month. you can actually see that the beach is kind of peppered with folks along taking a stroll enjoying the sunshine. it is cooler on the beaches with wind off the ocean. they've got that sea breeze so cape may currently 63 degrees but inland feels pretty nice, doesn't it? philadelphia 75 which is the normal high for this time of the year.

allentown and trenton 76. reading and wilmington currently 74 degrees. hard to believe, though, we have not had one day this month with temperatures in the 80's. march this year we had two days, april 3 and last year by the 20th of may we already had 13 days in the 80's in may. none right now but i am tracking some 80-degree weather that will be moving in the middle of next week and looks like that will stick around for awhile. but satellite6 along with action radar showing heading into the weekend we've got a messy storm on the way. there's one low pressure across the ohio valley. what this will be doing, it will be weakening and transferring its low -- energy to a low pressure off the coast of the carolinas and that becomes a coastal storm and heads out to sea and what that means is that it's going to be cloudy, it's going to be cool and wet tomorrow. so, friday night enjoy it. if you're heading to the union game, it's looking great. at the start of the game at 7 o'clock, 71 degrees. by the end of the game, 64 degrees with increasing

clouds through the evening but the evening will be dry and future tracker timing the rain and it looks like the thunderstorm will be riding a little bit slower than initially anticipated. that's good news. 8 o'clock in the morning the showers should still be to our south and our west so if you need to get out, do some errands you need to go for a run do it early in the morning because around lunchtime is when it feels in. around 11 o'clock the rain is here and then we're looking at periods of rain, heavy at times through the afternoon and then tapering off to some showers by the evening and sunday is not going to be completely dry but it won't be quite as wet as saturday. tomorrow about a half inch to an inch and a half of rain. when it's raining temperatures only in the 50. sunday clouds with occasional showers, 68 degrees and monday still possibility of a pop-up shower or thunderstorm, a high of 70 but look at tuesday. pop-up shower possible but 76 degrees and wednesday sunny and warm, 83 degrees finally.

>> ♪ >> "action news" continues with meteorologist adam joseph, jaime apody, rick williams and monica malpass. >> new developments in the search for that egyptair plane that crashed on the way to cairo. what officials are saying at this hour. also emergency responders rush to the scene of a towering fire at a local refinery and a history making day for the k-9 unit of camden county's police force. you'll hear from the first female officer to join that department. but first we are continuing to hon monitor breaking news from burlington county tonight. chopper6 is live over a brush fire burning along the new jersey turnpike in mount laurel. this is near exit four. so far there are no reports of injuries or evacuations and there are no restrictions on traffic along the turnpike at this time. we'll continue to follow this breaking story and bring you updates as they become available to us. >> military ships from the

united states egypt and other countries are now racing to the area that is believed to be where egyptair flight 804 went down early yesterday morning. officials now say they are not optimistic about finding survivors. the families of the 66 passengers and crew may find some closure with this latest discovery but it's a race against time trying to recover key pieces of evidence from that wreckage. searchers say they spotted what they believe could be an oil slick from the plane in the mediterranean sea. that's 100 miles north of alexandria, egypt. egyptian officials are standing by their belief that downing of the jetliner they believe was a terrorist attack. abc's marci gonzalez is live inside charles day gall airport near paris with the very latest. good evening to you, marcy. >> reporter: hi, monica. good evening. the investigation is now focused here and in that area off the coast of egypt where the debris was reportedly found which could hold some crucial clues. search planes scouring the mediterranean sea.

looking for more wreckage after egyptian officials say suitcases, seats and human remains were found believed to be from egyptair flight 804. investigators hoping it could all lead to the plane's black boxes. >> right now we found some debris which will help narrow down search area so they can put the microphones in the water. they'll be listening for the little metallic pingersism investigators are trying to figure out what caused the plane to drop from radar at 37,000 feet with no distress call greek officials say its radar shows the jet turning left, then strangely to the right before vanishing. >> it's a tragedy and by knowing the reason we'll be able to know how we would be -- how we would react. >> reporter: egyptian officials admit terrorism is more likely than a technical problem but every possibility is being considered. investigators looking into the backgrounds of all 66 people on board including captain mohammed shu can kar and the

who he thought was a young teenager into a sexual encounter. however, instead of a 14-year-old girl the man from roxborough was met by an undercover officer. police say he drove to the ridley township delaware county where he was arrested on the spot he's charged with multiple felonies. this case was part of a and online sting according to authorities. police are hoping this surveillance video helps lead to the arrest of an armed robber. the man can be seen putting items from the west philadelphia store into a black bag when an employee confronts him he pulls a gun and then left the store. you're asked to call police if you know anything about the crime which happened on sunday. chopper6 was over the philadelphia energy solutions refining complex here in southwest philadelphia today. smoke poured from a fire at one of the refinery furnaces. emergency responders rushed to the scene and immediately doused the flames with water. it took more than a half hour to get the situation under control. no one was injured and there was no threat to the surrounding community.

>> police in west philadelphia are looking for the suspect who robbed a man right in the middle of a crowded store. they gave us video from tuesday evening inside reilly's deli on westminster avenue. the victim was buying lottery tickets when a man just grabbed some money and a cell phone right out of his hands. no one stopped that man and he ran ay want police want anybody who recognizes this man to call them right away. from our delaware news room this is a man charged with burglary and felony theft for allegedly stealing from an elderly homeowner in wilmington. authorities say he told the 77-year-old victim he was a utility worker offered her discounterred service and then asked to use the phone. while in the home, fadiga allegedly took several tights and when he was couldn't fronted by the victim he ran weigh. he was captured a short time later. >> a community in delaware is rolling out a new approach to help heroin addicts. state and local officials in new castle unveiled hero help today. it will be a rehabilitation option for people addicted to

heroin and prescription painkillers. nonviolent drug offenders will have the choice between being arrested or entering a program to start getting treatment immediately. and if they complete the program, the charges against them could be dropped. >> it's not a silverbullet, it's not solving every problem. it simply gives us the ability when someone truly is in need of help and wants help it will give us an opportunity to put them into this program. >> today's announcement comes just months after officials in new castle unveiled the heroin trap. the program uses videos and interaffect tiff ads to help addicts find resources for help. >> the camden county police k-9 unit is welcoming two new members tonight one of whom is making history. "action news" reporter annie mccormick with that story. >> reporter: this yellow lab almost has his very own badge and he is partnered with the first woman to become a k-9 officer in camden's history. officer gabrielle comb macho graduated two years ago and

recently decided to go to the k-9 academy. >> we bonded very quick. i actually got him only a month ago. >> reporter: why did it take this long to add a female officer in the mix. >> up to this point in time we did not have many female officers. we never had one put in for the assignment. but now we have a significant amount of female officers. >> i'd like to think had that when it comes to officers it doesn't matter may, female we come here and do the exact same job. >> reporter: peyton lives at home with comb macho and her father who is a captain on the force. today county and state officials talked about the importance of dogs like peyton who sniff out narcotics in the city besieged with drugs saying it helps the nation fight the epidemic of drug use. the american humane society donated five body armor dog vests. the police department has eight k-9s now and hope to eventually have 12 or 15. peyton and com macho have two roles. >> it will be hugs and kisses and detecting narcotics. when she's not specifically on an assignment for detecting narcotics, she'll be in the

schools and doing outreach with the community. >> reporter: peyton and the officer will graduate the academy in june and then they will hit the streets together. >> i've been so used to dealing with humans going from that transition it's just completely wild. >> reporter: which one is better? >> probably the the the dog. >> reporter: reporting in camden, annie mccormick channel6 "action news." >> more than a hundred students at valley forge military college are on their way to successful career. both cadets noncadets graduated. lieutenant governor mike stack gave the commencement address on the school's campus in wayne. a very proud day for friends and families here in delaware county. >> absolutely. congrats to all of them. all right. time to get a check of the traffic scene friday night. >> once again matt pelman the update on the highways and by ways folks trying to get home get that weekend start. >> nice days like this are shorsort of in short supply. they're runing into a whole bunch of problems like a crash here on 95 northbound side approaching bridge street.

police are on the scene. right lane is out of commission. that means extra slowing coming north of penn's landing on 95. southbound also really heavy with a 31 minute travel time. a lot of people there headed down toward the phils game. and it's extra locked up on the northbound side of the roosevelt boulevard expressway this afternoon coming off the schuylkill up to wissahickon. that's where a broken down vehicle is sticking out partial into that right lane. of course the kelly drive remains shut down so that's putting extra traffic on the schuylkill itself with speeds in the teens and the mlk is going to be busy as well. we showed you the picture from chopper sick of the brush fire in mount laurel burlington county along the turnpike and while both lanes are opened in both directions, people are slowing down because of the smoke and just to see what's going on. headed northbound i would use 295. southbound i wouldn't. speeds just in the teens headed southbound. maybe use kings highway as an alternate. and septa's paoli thorndale regional rail lines shuttle busing right now. a short stretch between cynwyd and overbrook but that is giving people problems on this friday afternoon. have a good weekend rick and

>> the the uber driver charge with going on a random shooting rampage in michigan had to be removed from the courtroom after on outburst today. video from inside the court shows jason dalton interrupting a victim's emotional testimony. he became a rambling rant while she was talking about the day slaw shot. guards had to restrain dalton when he appeared to approach the victim on the witness stand. dalton is accused of killing six people and injuring two others.

park. you can see the sprinkles in the waterfall that we have there. it's a mostly sunny sky across the region. really comfortable at this hour as well. high today in philadelphia, 76 degrees. so, nice to be above average for a change. normal for us this time of year is 75. the record 94 set back in 1996. we won't be in the 90's next week but the 80's aren't too far behind and not too far away. numbers along that 95 corridor 76 degrees wilmington 74 at the coast though it's much cooler. from beach haven down to cape may point, temperature in the lower 60's. 75 in the poconos and 72 at lancaster. here's satellite6 along with action radar. it's dry and quiet thanks to that dominating ridge of high pressure from new england all the way down across the midatlantic region but what we're tracking for the weekend, you can see an area of low pressure to the south of cincinnati and also a piece of energy that will start to develop over georgia and the carolinas. this will work its way to the

north and east as we go throughout the day on saturday. future tracker six timing it out for you. 8 o'clock in the morning it's mostly cloudy. we have showers approaching across areas in dover. as we go throughout the early morning hours make sure you have the wet weather gear with you. it does look to be heavy for areas south of philadelphia for millville and dover also wilmington at that time. 2 o'clock in the afternoon right now it looks like the heaviest of that precipitation will be in philadelphia and areas to the south for trenton lakehurst down to millville wildwood on westward into dover. by 5 o'clock in the evening, the back edge of that precipitation at least the heaviest at least will start to exit to our north and east and as we go throughout the rest of the evening hours we have lingering and residual moisture to deal with. as far as rainfall and what we are expecting here, tomorrow and right throughout tomorrow afternoon and evening, for our northwest suburbs we could find more than a half inch of rainfall right along that 95 corridor, three-quarters avenue and inch to about an inch and a quarter depending on your location and the bull's eye looks to be across
