we are told that two students, both females were transported from the ballpark to capital health medical center and two other students were taken from the scol school here at area hospital and two others were treated here by paramedics. we spoke to the police chief just moments ago. >> it was a mass casualty response because they did not know what they were responding to. >> as a precaution took some of the kids to area bucks and some kids to saints mary's hospital for observation. i don't know what the status is at it point but i suspect they will be fine and just a case of heat exhaustion from the weather today. >> reporter: now a police officer told me he saw at least one of those ambulances leave here an hour ago. we haven't been able to talk to administrators directly, they

have their hands full managing the situation, they have posted some information on the pennsbury school district page, and they were updating that. we were inside at william penn and their phones are ringing and they are getting updates on where they are and how they are. and one person in the office says they believe that all the kids are checking out okay. it was treated as a mass casualty, they didn't know how sick the kids were and what they were dealing with initially. i'm nora muchanic channel 6 "action news." >> all right thank you. and that shows it's danger of what the heat can do when temperatures hover around 90 like they are on a day like today. adam joseph is standing by this hot weather is not going anywhere any time soon. it increases into the upcoming holiday woman and it's a shock to the system because we

are so cool this month up until the last day or two. we started on wednesday, 83 degrees for a high temperature and 88 yesterday and today 1 degree higher at 89. way below the normal of 77 degrees. and the temperatures go up and the air quality goes down. we are under a code red ozone action day for all group. whether you are young, middle aged or the elderly. you will want to limit the outdoor activities. we have high clouds moving in from the west and not much in the way of clouds or downpours. and the low pressure in the bahamas is gaining strength here, it will pull moisture our way the second half of the weekend. both saturday and sunday it's a tie. hot and humid but similar both days and monday ranking number

three of the three days with a lot of clouds and numerous downpours and storms around and we'll talk about the weekend and how hot it gets with the humidity coming up in the full accuweather forecast. a shot of the beach doesn't that look nice? the jersey shore is hopping. it's the unofficial start of the summer season and the forecast you just heard looks perfect for sun and surf. in avalon they are getting ready for the first surge of beach goers. the lifeguards were busy getting the sand and lifeboats ready to keep a close watch on everybody hitting the waves. the boardwalk and beach is spruced up and anxiously awaiting the rush. same scene in sea isle city. they are coaxing the sand and making sure it's perfect. and some lucky folks are in swimsuits and getting a jump start on the holiday weekend.

could raise at least $10 million for charity possibly women's health. >> all right megan thank you. we have breaking news from new jersey, state lawmakers have passed a package of bills that could help atlantic city avoid bankruptcy. lawmakers voted in the last hour, both the house and assembly passed the bills avoiding a state takeover for now. they have five months now to balance their books. a potential minimum wage increase is set for a vote in the new jersey assembly today. it would raise the minimum wage to 15 there's an hour over a series of years. many business groups and governor christie has criticized the proposal saying it would inflate the cost of labor. time for a first check of afternoon commute. >> lets check in with matt

pellman in the traffic center. >> that is on the cusp of two very busy afternoons. people are heading out of dodge today perhaps to the shore or the poconos. and if you go to the walt whitman bridge, a broken down vehicle on the schuylkill expressway eastbound at 28th street, it's taking out the right lane and everybody is doing the merge after they rounded the curve around university avenue, at the walt it's extra slow and the delay begins at city avenue. a slow crawl you may want to stick with the river drives instead and the vine street expressway is clogged and a busy thursday afternoon, heavy traffic in both directions along the vine at the schuylkill expressway. a nice afternoon weather wise, warm out there but a motorcycle was out and about and got into an accidents on exton at the 30 bypass at 202 northbound and they just got that pushed off to the side. in newark a crash at salem

with is the holiday weekend upon us people take to the skies with the unofficial start of summer but with the long wait times at security lines reaching a boiling point. officials were on the hot seat yet again. at a hearing the department of homeland security took some responsibility for this. admitting there is a v trifecta, an increase in passengers and not enough staffing and the tsa is responding and hiring new agents to get the lines moving. expediting is critical but so is counter terrorism measures. >> it needs to be more

replacement workers on the interstate of 95. he would not tolerate anymore dangerous activity and warned the striking workers to stay away from any vehicle worker driving on the highway. workers protested outside of mcdonald's annual shareholder meeting. they protested for $15 an hour and the formation of a union. executives are gathered for the company's meeting in oak brook, illinois. they recorded first quarter profits of $1.1 billion this year. and on wall street a bit of an up and down. the nasdaq rising just about 7 points and the s&p 500 off just

less than half a point today. the popular horse show in chester county is celebrating their 120th year. the devon horse show and country fair officially kicked off today in devon. the 11 day event has world class equestrians and boutique shops, a draw for both fans and riders. >> it's many years of tradition, it's our favorite horse show to come to as riders because the crowds are fantastic. especially on grand prix night. it's the largest and oldest multibreed horse show in the country. there is a sendoff for several students. in langhorne they held a military commitment ceremony for ten students that are joining the military after graduation. it's an annual tradition at that school. we are looking forward to

the weekend even though it's thursday. >> meteorologist adam joseph, says this is a weekend we should look forward to. >> especially after the month we endured. we look live from the shrivers beach cam in ocean city, amazing taffy there, we see folks walking along the boardwalks and folks hitting the sand as well with the sunshine around and temperatures a bit cooler at the shore but still wear the shorts and t-shirts. right now in cape may point, it's just 70 degrees with wind off the water and beach haven, all points at the shore in the 70s. 86 in pomona at the atlantic city airport. and 89 in philadelphia and 88 in allentown as well as reading, the one good thing go on here is that we don't have high humidity along with the heat in fact as we look at the dew points, the measure of moisture in the air, you step out and it feels oh

muggy, or not that bad. below 60, where most of us are in the 50s. when it's above it's slightly humid. lancaster and wilmington on the verge of 60 degrees. high clouds are pushing in from the west and they are not thick enough to hinder any of that sunshine from warming us and we see some sort of shower to the north and west of hagerstown and harrisburg, it could clip parts of the lehigh valley and most of us staying dry. a mild night and it will start to turn muggy late tonight under partly cloudy skies and 66 in philadelphia and 66 in millville and at the shore the coolest spot in the lower 60s and as we look at future tracker 6 at 10:00 tomorrow morning, many locations are at 80 degrees, poconos even at 75, mid-70s at the shore with a few high clouds. as we go into tomorrow afternoon not much in the way of pop-up downpours and thunderstorms.

they are around and very isolated. 90 in philadelphia and near that in allentown and a cooling sea breeze at the shore. and catching off in the mid-70s. here is your get away forecast for your friday. at the shore 74 degrees sunny and nice, in the city 90 degrees, in the poconos the best chance for the pop-up storm the temperature of 81 and one other thing we are watching into the holiday weekend, is this area near the bahamas east of there, the thunderstorms are circulating around one another and 60% chance of it becoming tropical or subtropical. but that particular feature is aiming at you look at the models here toward south carolina over the upcoming weekend, if it goes into the carolinas it's not a strong storm but it throws moisture even our way the second half of the weekend. as we take a look at the four day at 4:00 forecast. a heat wave is predicted. if not hitting 90 today it will

ten people are out of their homes now after a huge fire in bethlehem. chopper 6 hd was over the flames on the 1600 block of east eighth street. the fire broke out this morning in a twin home but a third house was also damaged. the crews had to call in additional help eventually striking a third alarm before they got there one under control. fortunately, nobody was hurt here. they are investigating after an unconscious person was in a park. chopper 6 hd was over west state street in media this morning. the person was spotted after 9:00 and details are sketchy and there is no word just yet on that person's condition. officials in philadelphia are working on ways to capitalize on the city's world heritage status. it was named a world heritage status in 2003. he says it will bring more businesses to the city and to

make sure they visit more important cultural and historical sites. and they are work on an online heritage mapping initiative to make information more readily available. u.s. men and women paused today to honor those that sacrificed. it was at joint base mcguire and ft. dix. they came for the parade of wreath ceremony. it paid tribute to those that have fallen in the line of duty. a c-17 globe master did a flyover salute for the upcoming memorial day. students in delaware are taking their lessons out of the classroom into the community in an effort to pay it forward. they are holding their freshman community service day, the students performed good deeds in and around wilmington. students studying plumbing reset

gray hall is live now where people are trying to stay cool at the devon horse show. >> reporter: hi sharrie what a great day it is to have a horse show. people were complaining about all the rain we had. it is a bit warm today, people would prefer this, the sun over is the cloud and rain, any day. warm weather lovers, rejoice it is fun in the sun as mother nature provides the perfect day to soak up rays, it may feel like summer, spring is still here. it's not the kind of weather to spend the day inside. >> we have a nice breeze to keep us alive and a bad day at golf is better than a great day at work. >> from play grounds to golf courses we found people enjoying the day in the beautiful outdoors. >> i love it. he is obviously a little guy but we are stuck inside forever. anything to get outside and play

download our 6 abc news app, it is free to help you plan your weekend activities. gray hall, channel 6 "action news." >> all right gray, thanks very much. a philadelphia police officer was taken to the hospital following a car crash this morning. his patrol vehicle was hit by another car at 11:00 at the intersection of german town avenue and price street. he was responding to an assignment at the time and expected to be treated and released from einstein hospital. an early morning fire severely damaged a row home in the feltonville section of philadelphia the flames broke out on the 400 block of lowden street and the worst damage was on the second floor and the cause of the fire is still under investigation. a man was shot in the head as he parked his girlfriend's car in front of her home. the shot rang out at 1:00 this morning at angora terrace in south philadelphia, he was

rushed to the hospital where he is listed in critical condition. a witness gave police a trips of the shooter's car and they found the car and are questioning two men. the fbi is asking for your help identifying the man that robbed a wells fargo branch in port richmond. he ended up leaving empty handed. you are asked to call the fbi or philadelphia police if you recognize this man. a new road project is paving the way for change in camden. crews are reconstructing haddon avenue at the old white horse pike. and putting in new traffic signals and bike lanes, officials say this meets the needs of drivers and cyclists and pedestrians and supports camden's rebirth as a job center, the work costs more than $4 million and it is expected to be ready in january. a bit of developing news, a

proposal to ban smoking at new jersey's beaches and parks is heading to the governor's desk. the state assembly and senate approved the measure, if the ban is enacted. individual towns could designate smaller sections of beach where the smoking is permitted and not apply to parking lots next to beaches and parks. all right, it is time to kick off the summer with our very first down at the shore of the season. >> it means summer one we start this. melissa magee is live in the atlantic city checking out the absecon lighthouse and the beautiful views. >> reporter: yes brian and sharrie, we made it to the top of the absecon lighthouse which is the tallest lighthouse in new jersey and the third tallest lighthouse in the country. about 150 years old and they have about eight cameras at the top of the lighthouse and

>> reporter: yes, so there say lot going on this season new down at the shore and very to introduce to you buddy grover, the keeper of the lighthouse. buddy tell me what year you are in? >> actually i'm in my 89th year. >> in his 89th year, a volunteer here for eight years, and climbs at least twice a week is that right. at least. >> what is your advice and climbing the lighthouse? >> we have six landings, you need to stop and look out the windows and read the history and enjoy atlantic city and then climb another 31 steps. >> and keep on climbing. we love buddy grover. such an inspiration. come to atlantic city and check out the absecon lighthouse and have more fun down at the shore this weekend. and i'm working on my fish face. >> your fish face is sleek.

how about a flashback in time. chances are if you still own a floppy disc it's gathering dust in a drawer but they are still being used at the pentagon. government auditors found computers from the 1970s in the nuclear weapons division, they require 8 inch floppy discs that

are obsolete for deck ates. they are used for coordinating nuclear missiles and bombers and tasker planes and they cost $60 billion a year to maintain and the system is scheduled to be replaced by the end of next year. an 18-year-old had a terrifying encounter with two burglars. jenson clark was home alone in portland, oregon, when a man and woman started banging on her front door, the mother then called 911 when clark ran to hide in the closet. the two kept in touch texting as the ordeal played out and when the suspects discovered clark's hiding place the texts became frantic. >> they have her! >> she said oh my gosh, and said there is someone in here at that points they were both looking at me and we were in a two foot

radius, no one knew what to do. just disbelief you don't know what to happen -- >> she says the suspects walked out immediately and sheriff's deputies caught up with them and arrested the pair for burglary a short time later. big talkers now and the big question here, what is a dad to do when their little girl has to use a public restroom, if it's just the two of them there is no choice but to use the mens room. in utah a dad brought his 5-year-old daughter to the bathroom in a local wal-mart. christopher adams said another guy in the bathroom got upset about it. >> this guy walks in and goes to the bathroom and then he just turns to me and starts freaking out dropping the f-bomb and what he was freaking out about was that my daughter was in the men's bathroom. >> adams ended up getting

punched in the face and kicked, he held the guy down until the police showed up. and that is facing charges possibly assault charges. and this is a disturbing new viral new internet trend, teens lighting themselves on fire all in the name of social media fame, this video is graphic, a 20-year-old boy from queens was severely burned while attempting the fire challenge. it involves pouring flammable liquids on your body and then posting the results on social media. these are the viral youtube videos igniting the trend. the latest diced himself with rubbing alcohol and lit himself on fire and he ran out of the house and the neighbors helped him put out the flames on his

body and he suffered 40% burns on his body. >> and like other teens he has tried it. >> i put it on and the next thing my whole body burst in flames. disturbingly that teen said he would do it again because he said quote, that is fun. this is a major warning for parents who may not know about this trend or this challenge and the items used for it is common and in the house. there is a heated discussion on our 6 abc "action news" facebook page. we want to get the word out because it is causing serious injuries. >> an incredibly dumb idea. matt is standing by with the latest on the roads. >> reporter: this ride home is a doozy, we have this accident on the roosevelt boulevard extension, just beyond the ridge avenue on ramp, they have

temporarily shut down all northbound lanes. all northbound lanes of the boulevard are blocked and the fire truck may be on the move, so at least the left lane will be moving shortly. lincoln drive is a better bet. downtown in center city a crash on the eastbound side of the vine and got that pushed off to the side but slow going way from the schuylkill expressway which is plenty busy itself. speeds like 11 miles per hour and 13 miles per hour. the blue route slow going from mid county to 95 this afternoon and the northbound side approaching conshohocken there is a crash and this got pushed off to the shoulder as well and it's still locked up from villanova to conshohocken. a crash along street road and extra traffic on 42 southbound as people head down to the shore. we'll check it again in the 5:00

meteorologist, adam joseph is joining us now. it's 89 and we could touch 90. >> if we don't do it told we have three days of reaching 90 degrees. heat wave is on the way for the unofficial start of the summer season. double scan live radar it is sunny and hot out there, inland locations a bit cooler at the shore and a sea breeze is kicking in and not tracking storms at the present time. numbers wise 1 degree shy of 90 and the official high should come in at the next hour or so.

89 in reading and 86 in wilmington and along the immediate shore it's in the 70s and then 10 miles inland to the pomona atlantic city airport it jumps up quickly by 16 degrees around 86. we have showers around the central parts of pennsylvania and the mountain chain as you head to the appalachians and virginia, most of that should fall apart but could clip parts of the poconos and the lehigh valley with a brief shower, otherwise just passing clouds. and it turns muggy overnight. the humidity is not all that oppressive this afternoon, but you'll notice the uptick in the humidity later tonight 54 to 67 for your overnight low. and tomorrow especially the city of philadelphia should hit 90 degrees, most locations will be shy of that and hot and more muggy and a pop-up thunderstorm towards the lehigh valley in the afternoon, most of us staying dry in the 70s once again at the

langhorne where students are being evaluated now. >> we are told that seven students were taken to st. mary and i spoke with someone inside and we are told that the students are being evaluated but appear to be in good condition, here is what we know so far. sixth graders from william penn middle school went on a field trip to the trenton thunder baseball game. some children showed signs of heat related illness, some were treated by the school nurse and paramedics and about 15 were taken to area hospitals to be evaluated. two were taken via ambulance to capital health and five taken to area hospital and they have being treated and released home. we don't know about the severity of the other illnesses, but this is a reminder the
