a pleasant good morning to you. it is now, 7:00 a.m., saturday, may 28. here's some of the stories we're following on "action news." hot holiday weekend. we're kicking off the summer season with summer-like temperatures. a big medical response briefly shut down a major south jersey highway following a crash. plus a motorcyclist is badly hurt after crashing on the boulevard overnight. first the long-awaited holiday weekend. we're kicking off the summer season and it is feeling like it. many across the delaware and lehigh valleys will spend the holiday weekend remembering our veterans particularly those who made the ultimate sacrifice. many will spend time at the jersey shore a respite from home and work. it will be a hot and steamy

holiday weekend. meteorologist chris sowers is joining us you look hot, chris. >> reporter: no, i feel good. i remember it was a week ago i was standing out here with a coat on. temperatures were chilly and it was raining. it's beautiful out here now. the humidity numbers are starting to creep up a little bit it's tolerable and temperatures are in the 60s. pottstown, 67. center city, 69. levittown, 68. chester 68. up in the in connection poconos. gandys beach, 69. we're showing mid 60s for the shorepoints surf city to cape may. satellite and radar, today looks good, lots of sunshine, just a few high, thin clouds expected during the afternoon. as we look off the southeast coast you can see this glob developing this should be

tropical storm bonnie. the national hurricane center will come out with this in the next hour or so. it will be hitting charleston, south carolina. some of the moisture will be in the delaware and lehigh valleys late in the day tomorrow and sunday night into monday. we're talking tropical downpours. some of the forecast models are showing one to two inches of rain during that time frame, isolated heavier months 3 to 4 which could cause localized flooding. today is gorgeous, 92 degrees in the city. mostly sunny and hot and somewhat humid. jersey shore in the mid to upper 70s thanks to the sea breeze. when i come back in just a few minutes we'll talk about the tropical downpours on the way in the exclusive accuweather seven-day forecast. rain is coming back. 7:02 the sun is shining brightly already this morning. mother nature is providing the

right atmosphere for the long awaited memorial day holiday weekend. summer-like temperatures outside. it's the unofficial start to the summer season. there's no better way to do that than to go to the jersey shore. people flocked to their favorite eats and treats yesterday. kids are enjoying an easy ride in the pretend car. it's a way to relax as the school year winds down. jeff chirico found kids saying so long to the classes and hello summer. >> reporter: what does the beach mean to you? probably staying away from school. >> reporter: that's a good thing. how much do you look forward to coming down here? tons, i love it. it's my favorite place. why wouldn't it be? weeks of on and off rain businesses are banking on customers to give them a jump start into the summer season. if you do not want to make

the drive to the delaware shore, dart has launched bus service from new castle kent county, in dover it will take passengers to rehoboth beach park and ride, it will cost between 7 .80. or $13. or you can by a 22 round trip day pass. there are ceremonies being held to remember the reason for the holiday. those who gave the ultimate sacrifice so we can enjoy our freedom. today there are ceremonies and services to honor and pay respect to the soldiers who fought in wars. the vfw post 1 in wilmington, delaware, will hold the memorial day program at 10:30. there will be a tribute to the veterans in warrington, bucks

"action news" was there as a medical helicopter transported the men to the hospital. we know the accident happened at 3:15 a.m. at mile marker 38 and the westbound ac expressway in winslow township. the vehicle ran off the road and struck several trees before overturning. the men are being treated for serious injuries at cooper university hospital. back here and new for you this morning, a 26-year-old is shot and killed and police are looking for the gunman. the victim was hit by several

bullets in the 2000 block of south 66th street in southwest philadelphia. the victim staggered two blocks before collapsing. doctors at penn presbyterian hospital were unable to save him. new this morning, a motorcyclist is in the hospital right now in critical condition after a crash on the boulevard. police say the man lost control near c street in the feltonville section at 12:30 a.m. he was rushed to einstein to be treated. no word on what caused the crash. debt is forcing delaware spca to close it's flagship facility. the property will be sold and the money will go toward the georgetown location where the animals will be relocated. 20 employees will lose their jobs. the announcement comes one year after the spca spent $500,000 on

new dog kennels and crates. from our new jersey newsroom, the dials will continue to roll in atlantic city. new jersey governor chris christie signed a package of bills that will keep the financially strapped cities from running out of money. atlantic city leaders have five months to balance the budget for the next five years if they fail to do so. the state will take over the city's finances. verizon workers have put away the picket signs as they prepare to head back to work. their ten week strict has come to an end after they reached a tentative deal for a 4 year contract. 40,000 employees in nine states and washington, d.c. could be back on the job as early atmosphere next week. the time, 7:07. still ahead on "action news" this saturday morning. unusual ginger guests, customers are upset after a restaurant decides to bring in an unusual

found alive in a hudson county apartment. the cats were in cages covering 1 foot wall dogs were hiding in closets. the neighbor called police. a mother and daughter are under arrest facing 87 counts of animal cruelty. another person being sought in the case. authorities say the three accepted money to adopt and care for unwanted animals, but some are malnourished and may not survive. customers are not fans of this restaurant promotion in

wisconsin. would you look at this. that is a live 6-foot long gator sitting on top of the table. the kids got a chance to touch the gator as the handler stood close by. the health department said that's a violation. the other than held a promotion to celebrate the restaurant's grand opening. 7-eleven, dangerous flooding taking the joy out of the holiday in the south. texas has been hit hard by heavy rains once again. more rain is forecasted this weekend. one person and three others are missing in the city of conrow. good samaritans used a ladder to rescue a woman stuck in flood waters. dozens of cows seen struggling to swim to safety in walter county. tough time for the folks in texas. >> reporter: tough to be a could you. you think of the lonestar state

that part of the country you think dry and desert. we've had so much rain over the past year, we keep seeing flooding like that. we're watching tropical rains from bonnie for the second half of the weekend. things look good, there's the view in cape may. a beautiful morning to take a stroll. temperatures are cool, the humidity has not crept up there, as of yet. it's going to later this afternoon. you can see folks taking advantage. nice weather. double scan live is clear, we'll keep it this way today, outside shot of a stray shower or thunderstorm way up here in the lehigh valley or the poconos. it's 20, 25% chance. 69 degrees is the current temperature in philadelphia. dewpoint, 60. number was down in the upper 50s, the higher this gets, the more uncomfortable it feels. pressure is holding stealed.

wind out of the south at of miles per hour. you meaner 60s close to 70 degrees for everybody this morning. cape may, 65. atlantic city 67. reading and allentown, 71 and 70 degrees. there's a cold front way out to the west that will push through the ohio and the great lake states this afternoon and it quickly approach the delaware and the lehigh valleys sunday and monday. that will help to draw some of the moisture northward through the coal -- carolinas and the virginias and plant itself over us sunday night into monday. you can see the cloud tops starting to grow over the last few frames. it will get its act together in the next few hours and we'll watch for the potential for downpours in the second half of the weekend. future tracker 6, all is quiet today, there is the outside shot of a shower or thunderstorm in the lehigh valley. we're baking today in the 90s

with the humidity feels like 93, 94. the clouds increase from the south, here comes some of the moisture late in the day. let's say after 1:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m., everybody is fair game for a pop-up shower or thunderstorm which will transition over to tropical downpours. look at all the reds and yellows this is heavy rain. this is memorial day, look at all the reds west of philadelphia and north of philadelphia. even the jersey shore there could downpours there, as well. monday afternoon look for leftover showers, here's what to expect, sunday night into monday. the remnants of bonnie push through here. tropical downpours expected. generally speaking anywhere from one to two inches of rain is expected. there will be some areas that could see anywhere from 3 to 4 inches of rain. it depends on where the heavier downpours set up. that could create flash flooding issues for the parts of the

area. this is what one model is showing for philadelphia. 4.16 by monday afternoon. don't pay attention to the number, jewels the idea of -- just the idea of heavier downpours likely with the system. today looks good, tomorrow and monday look iffy. lots of sunshine, 92 is the forecasted high. winds out of the south southwest at 5 to 15 miles per hour. it's uncomfortable later on with the humidity. pop-up thunderstorm for the poconos today, 86. sunday, showers developing late in the day, 83. monday memorial day, tropical downpours. jersey shore, mostly sunny, 78. tomorrow look for afternoon showers, downpours sunday night into monday morning. 73 for sunday. 72 for memorial day. the exclusive accuweather seven-day forecast, 82 degrees cloudy after showers for sunday, 77 for memorial day, it's muggy out there, with downpours early. showers during the afternoon, tuesday, wednesday, thursday, and friday, all look pretty nice

at this point, with temperatures ranging from 77 to 85 degrees. as for ranking the weekend days, today by far looks like the best one, tomorrow downhill, monday more so. no outdoor plans for memorial day. >> reporter: that's the day where you have to keep it indoors. thanks for the update. 7:16 if you're just waking up with us, for decades women have been told to get mammograms starting at the age of 40 and do it every year. now there's controversy in the change in the guidelines. tamala edwards explains in the art of aging report. >> reporter: it's been simple, get a mammogram every year. however, the american cancer said women should not start until 45. or age of 50 and be done every other year. women who don't develop cancer can stop mammograms at 74.

main line health radiologist worries too many cancers will be missed. 20% of all breast cancers are found in women in their 80s. >> reporter: and dr. stein said the shift comes as 3d technology catches more tumors earlier. personally i have seen many that would not be picked you mean. it is zero or one stage, at least 95% of those could be cured. >> reporter: to clear the confusion, dr. stein and breast cancer specialists at main line health can set their own guidelines. cass was considered averae risk with all her mammograms cleared until two years ago. she called me back and said they saw cancer. i called all my sisters and

90 degrees. if the holiday weekend plans include being outside, don't forget the sunscreen. outside we go to meteorologist chris sowers with a look head for the weekend. toasty today. >> reporter: the sunscreen is going to be needed today. or you do what i am doing right, sit under a big oak tree and enjoy the comfortable air with the temperatures in the 60s and fairly low humidity levels. the humidity will increase throughout the day, but right now it's comfortable. most of the region at 69 to 71. reading, 71. allentown, 70. millville, dover, 69 degrees. high pressure in control as we look at the mid atlantic there's not much going going on affirm cold front approaches from the west. that will bring showers and thunderstorms to the great lake states this afternoon. there's a tropical system to the south that will bring tropical rains to the carolinas, late

today and into the overnight. for us we'll enjoy a decent amount of sunshine. hour by hour we go, a lot of sunshine it's hot and humid, highs around 92. but again it's sunny. 3:00 p.m., 90 degrees. at the jersey shore, sea breeze kicking in. you'll reach 77, 78 degrees. the numbers will pull back more like mid 70s s.a.t day wears on. for the city there's 92. poconos look for a combination of sun and clouds, spotty afternoon thunderstorm. it's a very small chance like a 25% chance, but we have to allow for that chance. 86 degrees in the mountain. beautiful day, tropical down spores expected tomorrow afternoon and monday. i'll have that coming up. prepare for the rain. the memorial day weekend is here, that means the mad dash

for the jersey shore for fun in the sun. beaches and boardwalks are popular places to turn as we kick off the summer season. jeff chirico checked in with those who headed to ocean city a little early. >> reporter: while the sun sets on the jersey shore, the summer is beginning. crowds return to the boardwalk in ocean city enjoying the staples of rides and fudge and good times. for the shields girls and their friends from fort washington it's a welcome break from a grueling school year. i love school, but this is amazing. it's fun to be down with our family and friends and have fun. >> reporter: a beach ball drop kicked off the holiday weekend in atlantic city. the water was cold and the beach breezy, but the sun lured the turner family from southwest philadelphia. it was nice out i got the kids from school early and i just bridge them to the beach. a lot of people are thinking it's cold, 70 degrees, we're from buffalo, we're

in lower merion. the impact caused the ford to catch on fire. a 6-month-old child was taken to children's hospital. the other person was taken to another hospital to be treated. investigators are trying to figure out to that -- total damage in bedminster firefighters put out a fire at imports one on easton road. smoke bellowed through the roof before firefighters got a handle on the fire. this morning there's no word on what was lost in the fire or what caused the fire. this morning, philadelphia police are searching for the man who held up a supermarket at gunpoint. investigator say he walked into the acme in chestnut hill just

before midnight. police say he pointed a gun at a cashier and demanded money and ran away with the cash. police are reviewing the surveillance video in hopes of finding leads. attorney general cordello n kane is losing a press secretary of state. he announced tuesday is his last day on the job. he said he is leaving after handling what he called an unfolding series of crisis that were never ending. kathleen kane faces criminal charges for leaking grand jury testimony. her law license has been suspended. 7:37 we turn to the race for the white house. protests outside a donald trump rally turning violent after he clirchld -- clinched the republican nomination. police in riot gear were there to quell the riots in

humid. 68 in dover. 64 in reading. norsetown, 65. the humidity levels continue to increase and they continue to do that over the next 24 to 48 hours, the tropical moisture gets listed to the north in the carolinas and the virginias sunday night into monday. this should tropical storm bonnie. maximum stained winds 35 miles per hour. it's disorganize storm we need higher winds to take on a name. it's a tropical depression. it's moving to the northwest at 7 miles per hour. we expect it to make landfall over charleston and it sits over the coast of the coral line -- carolinas. it will hang out over the carolinas. tropical rains will lift north because of an approaching cold front. it could spill memorial day.

lehigh valley and the poconos could see a scattered showers or thunderstorm later on. everybody else is dry and hot and humid. find a pool and relax as we see the heat pool on in. 9:00 a.m. it could start out sunny north and west, cloudy for everybody's. the clouds lower and thicken. during the afternoon we see the showers and downpours develop. this model holds everything off at least until 2 or 3:00 p.m. i see other computer information that has it raining by lunchtime. sunday could be a question mark. it depends on the timing of the system. sunday night into monday it's raining, some of it will be heavy at times. looks like we lost the data there. generally speaking one to two inches when all is said and done. today, mostly sunny, hot. rain expected after 1:00 p.m., it's pouring sunday night, memorial day downpours during the morning, transitioning over
