3:00 this afternoon in the 2300 block of orthodox street. "action news" reporter dann cuellar got to the scene a short time ago and dann you've got the details as far as what you can make out so far. >> reporter: well, listen, philadelphia firefighters are remaining on the scene right now after bringing this fire under control. now, it broke out just after 3 o'clock here at american legion post 396. they were having a memorial day event inside the hall when the fire broke out. the junior vice commander of the post says there were about 20 to 30 veterans and their families inside the two story structure when somebody noticed smoke. >> somebody said we have a, um, a dumb waiter at the end of the bar and somebody said there's smoke coming out of the dumb waiter. so, my son-in-law ran upstairs and here at the attic upstairs a motor had caught fire and i guess that started the whole thing. it started out as a little tiny fire. >> they tried putting it out

with a -- a fire extinguisher. they tried putting it out with that. and then they came out and said everybody out, everybody out and then that was it. >> i guess the building's done now. i mean, we've been there for 98 years for crying out loud. >> reporter: really? >> yeah. it was a great post. >> reporter: back live here on the scene, the four alarm fire now under control. the cause has not been determined. fortunately, there were no injuries but a sad day for veterans of american legion post 396. we're live here in frankford, i'm dann cuellar channel6 "action news. back to you, rick. >> all right, dann, thank you. turn and now to the soggy memorial day accuweather forecast. a wet day at the shore prompted dozens to end their holiday weekend a bit early. let's get right over to meteorologist cecily tynan at the "action news" big board. cecily how long will the rain stick around. >> rick, along the shore the rain, the steady rain should be moving out within the next hour or two, which is good because it has been a washout down the shore. double scan live showing the

big picture. we've got this low pressure that used to be tropical storm bonnie and what this is doing is supplying that steady rain right along the coast. at the same time there's a cold front that's beginning to push into the western suburbs and this does have a broken line of some storms. a lot of those storms should be breaking apart but what this front will do is finally pushing that moisture across the shore out to sea. we'll begin to dry things out but zooming in you can see that the heaviest rain right now has just slipped off the coast but we still have a steady rain along the garden state parkway from cape may beyond atlantic city. it has been a washout on the beaches. but the situation will gradually improve. so, this is what to expect. that rain will be ending along coast within the next hour or two but we could see a few scattered evening showers and thunderstorms with that cold front. the best chance areas north and west. tomorrow clouds breaking for sun and we finally get rid of this tropical humidity. i'll have all the details on that coming up in the full

accuweather forecast. sharrie he. >> cecily thank you. cecily just mentioned the beach areas. taking a live look down the shore in ocean city, it's been a rainy and humid day and that prompted many people to head home early. beaches were near empty today but the wet weather did not stop some of these people from walking the boardwalk. >> well, farther from the coastline folks still managed to get in their barbecues and pool days despite a gray sky memorial day. "action news" reporter sarah bloomquist was live in fairmount park with more on that. hi, sarah. >> reporter: hi there, rick. this is the jones family's annual memorial day gathering here behind me and you can see they've got quite a crowd. typically we see lots of gatherings like this here in this section of fairmount park but this year they practically had the whole place to themselves. sure the sky is gray it's a little muddy but we found plenty of people spending this holiday indoors and outdoors together. here on lemon hill this group brought pickle to their picnic and set up chairs planning to

do plenty of relaxing on a day that turned out to be pretty okay for an outdoor affair. >> i think we're just elated that the rain held off and we're able to get out here day. plenty of people spent some time hitting balls on the range in fairmount park a great way to spend memorial day especially for a retired u.s. marine. >> i'm celebrating. i'm enjoying it. i'm having a wonderful time. >> reporter: robert perry set out to see if the fish were biting in the schuylkill river. >> i don't care if i don't even catch nothing. just being out here makes me happy. >> reporter: others set tout sweat on this holiday by running or biking along boathouse row. >> it's a beautiful day. the weather cleared and it's a great thing to get down into the city and go for a ride and be around the river. >> reporter: gray skies overhead sent some indoors to places like the franklin institute. >> this is the plan all along. we were at the beach yesterday and we figured we would come here day. but for many memorial day means a barbecue and generations of the jones family enjoyed hot dogs and good company. it's a holiday tradition. >> i like to see that the younger ones get to know the

the exodus home from the shore well under way tonight. >> matt pelman standing by in the "action news" traffic center to give us the update. hey, matt. >> i have a feeling there these people had a if weekend but they're probably not having the greatest time right now. it is wet down here in cape may county, it is a very slow crawl as well on the northbound side of the garden state parkway, rick and sharrie, we're barely moving here in the northbound lanes where the great egg tolls sit on the southbound side of the fence. and this sort of pace extends the whole way from sea isle through this point up to the a.c. expressway this afternoon. we've been looking at delays like this since 10:00 this morning and they continue in full force this afternoon with speeds like 13 miles per hour on the northbound parkway. if you're taking the back roads along 50 don't forget we've got that bridge construction north of tuckahoe. what they're doing now is they're letting only northbound traffic through there so coming southbound you can't get into tuckahoe. the bridge is closed to you this afternoon. on the a.c. expressway, it's not terrible once you get there having all the toll lanes back at the egg harbor toll plaza definitely helping

us out. once you good tote 42 moderate to heavy traffic in the northbound lanes by creek road headed up toward 295. coming into jersey at the delaware memorial bridge speeds in the 20's coming out of new castle and in new castle county in newark a truck flipped over so 273 is closed there by the post office at 72. stick with 72 instead. also don't forget we're on strange schedules across-the-board on mass transit. in most cases the holiday schedule is a sunday schedule. we'll check it again sharrie in the next half hour. >> thank you matt. meantime the weather forced several towns to either cancel or move the locations of their memorial day events. butter the annual parade in media went on as planned. day events. >> ♪ >> reporter: among those here today, 95-year-old francis desmond who joined the navy and helped escort convoys past u boats. >> get that ship across and that's what we did. some of us didn't get back. it's a shame. >> reporter: when gladys martin joined up she thought her mom would be upset. >> she marched to get the vote in 1918 when my father was in france in world one and that's my heritage. >> reporter: she said good thing. >> and she -- yeah,. >> reporter: besides its parades media has this veterans museum packed with artifacts and films from world two, korea, vietnam. >> we wander to educate the public especially the children today about the sacrifices that their parents, grandparents aunts uncles made

for them to keep them free. >> reporter: one of the museum's founders is buchman's husband ed a young sailor on the u.s.s. missouri when the battleship was attacked by a cam kaz see. when he meets school kids he makes a connection. >> you turn to the teenager and you say how old are you and when they say 17, 18, that's what we were, 18, 19 years old. >> reporter: today this town remembers young sailors soldiers and airmen who gave their lives for a grateful nation. in media, john rawlins channel6 "action news." >> a special mass was held on this memorial day in fairmount park. veterans and churchgoers were at saint francis xavier church this morning. philadelphia native and former pennsylvania congressman patrick murphy was there as well. he's the acting secretary of the army. the parkway memorial v.f.w. post 7650 hosted today's mass. >> ♪ the saint james alumni

choir performed at a memorial day ceremony in aston today. they gathered inside the green american leach juno post 926 to honor fallen soldiers. several local veterans spoke at today's service. >> as always, we try our very best to bring you as many holiday observances and parades as we can. this young girl sang to a group of veterans marking memorial day in atlantic city this afternoon. proudly displaying the conflicts they served in these veterans listened intently as their time of service was remembered. on a lighter note here a number of classic cars delighted the parade goers in hamilton township, new jersey, this morning. the groveville yardville memorial day parade was first held in 1870 and is one of the oldest continuing in the garden state. military was well represented in this memorial day parade in southampton, new jersey. this is the 136th year for this parade.

>> a fireworks staging barge broke loose this morning in new hope bucks county. chopper 6hd was over the wing dam this afternoon at around 2:30 where the barge was still stuck in the rocks. rough surf made it difficult for officials to get to it initially. a man remains hospitalized after an electrical shock in a motel pool at the jersey shore. officials say 34-year-old greg subiszak was shocked while womenning at the azteswimming a. the county health department must give clearance for the pool to reopen. >> in health check tonight, the department of veterans affairs wants to dramatically expand the role of nurses to cut down on wait times at va

hospitals. under the new proposal nurses would be allowed to prescribe medication, administer anesthesia and order and read diagnostic tests, all without a doctor's supervision. only nurses with advanced training would be given more responsibility. a new program will help a man and man's best friend battle cancer better. veterinarians and doctors at ohio state university have teamed up with nationwide children's hospital to speed up research in osteosarcoma a bone cancer in children. dogs get a similar cancer but studies take a fraction of the 10 years needed to develop new drugs for humans. >> for years you have an answer and then you don't have to lose that time on the human side. makes a very big difference in terms of impacting how clinical trials are run on the human side. >> there are already two studies under way on the new drugs to slow down the bone

[gunfire] >> veterans community and church members gathered this morning at the war memorial in delaware county for a service of remembrance. it fired ceremonial shots and placed flags and flowers in front of the memorial on providence road at woodlawn avenue. resurrection center fellowship hall. members of the community and council members recognized the 964 veterans buried at riverview cemetery. the ceremony had to be moved indoors because of the rain. >> nearly 40,000 striking verizon employees will return to work on men's. this comes after they reached a tentative contract agreement. that agreement includes 1300 new call center jobs, nearly 11 percent in raises and the first contract for verizon workers. union members will vote on the deal after returning to work.

>> well, tonight there will be a rare opportunity to get a closeup look at mars and you won't need a telescope. scientists say the red planet is moving closer to earth than it has been in 11 years so it is bigger and brighter in the sky and visible to the naked eye. nasa says the best time to look will be around midnight but you can catch a glimpse of mars passing even closer up until june 3rd. wow. >> very cool. midnight. i'll be up. >> you'll be up? all right.

take a picture -- >> time for the accuweather forecast with meteorologist cecily tynan and we still have some rain in our area but things improving. >> things are improving. we'll have a lot of clouds tonight but tomorrow night and wednesday night much better viewing. we should have clear skies. but storm tracker6 live double scan shopping the situation is improving. we still have a light steady rain along the shore but the heaviest rain has pushed off shore and we haven't had this front move in yet. that's a cold front. that will be sweeping in later this evening. could bring a few showers and thunderstorms to the northwest suburbs but that will clear the air from the humidity. and with this high humidity, the tropical moisture, these rainfall totals over the past 24 hours very impressive. mount holly and sewell both around 3-inches, drexel hill, two and a half, wilmington 2-inches and philadelphia last night we got ther got that soakg rain, about a six and a half. may so far 6.65-inches of rain.

that's about 3-inches above normal. 21 out of 30 days we've had at least a trace of rain and the last time we had a may with more than 6-inches was back in 1990. so, this has been an unusually wet month. but things will be improving as we head through the evening hours. and right now you can see the areas getting the sunshine. look at this. lancaster, reading and allentown, all in the mid 80's seeing some peeks of sun. philadelphia a little bit more in the form of clouds, 77. cape may point you're dealing with that steady light rain currently with a temperature of only 66. so, satellite6 along with action radar showing that moisture that's streaming up from what used to be tropical storm bonnie he is beginning to push out to sea and again, nearly a town some breaks of clouds but then that cold front will be rolling through and the best chance of getting any storms will be in the far northwest suburbs. future tracker showing around 8 o'clock, a pretty impressive line of storms across the lehigh valley. temperatures in the 70's but look at what happens a farther

east into the cooler air. it essentially evaporates. 11 o'clock plenty of clouds. as we wake up tomorrow morning, you head back to work or school still dealing with some clouds and especially south and east of philadelphia, maybe a sprinkle but then that drier air returns. we get more sunshine and humidity will be topping through the day. so, tuesday afternoon is looking great. the five day at 5:00 showing tomorrow the sunshine back, getting less humid, 87 degrees. wednesday i think will be the pick of the week. plenty of sunshine, low humidity, 83. great weather. go to the zoo. that's what i'm doing. thursday partly sunny comfortable 79. friday a cold front will bring us some showers and thunderstorms, 76. we dry out on saturday but there's another system on sunday. adam will talk about that in the accuweather 7-day forecast. guys. >> all right, looking forward to wednesday. thank you cecily. quick break. more news when we come right back. stay with us.

solemn remembrances. animal rights activists are calling for change after a gorilla was shot and killed at the cincinnati zoo. tanker truck carrying thousands of gallons of milk is causing a mess in newark, delaware. >> first we continue to follow breaking news out of philadelphia's frankford section where firefighters are still on the scene of a massive fire at an american legion post. chopper6 is flying live over the scene right now. the blaze broke out around 3 o'clock on the 2300 block of orthodox street. it then climbed to four alarms before crews were able to bring it under control. katherine scott has more. >> ♪ >> reporter: string bands veterans girl scouts and more, the bridesburg memorial day parade stepped off this morning on richmond street. >> seems like it's getting bigger and better. >> ♪ >> reporter: this annual tradition draws people from across the area and is something this community is immensely proud of. >> the whole community gets together to support it. there's a 5k race that supports it, the string bands come out. we have some of the best string bands in the city right here in bridesburg. >> family oriented and everybody gets together. it's just great. all the kids have fun. >> reporter: humans didn't have the corner on the fun though. apparently this is a favorite outing for brittany the albino burmese python. >> she comes every year. everybody loves her. i was the can kids love her. basically we love her. >> ♪ >> reporter: before the parade a memorial service and

placing of the wreath at most holy redeemer cemetery. speakers reflected on the true meaning of memorial day, a salute to all those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. [gunfire] >> fire. >> reporter: the rain held out for the parade and hundreds lined the streets waving flags, clapping. another year, another success, another opportunity to educate the younger generation. >> we teach them that everybody who joins the armed forces is very brave and we owe them gratitude. >> reporter: whether here in bridesburg or somewhere else the important thing is to take time today to remember. in bridesburg, katherine scott channel6 "action news." >> a 21 gun salute honored the fallen today in delaware county. [gunfire] veterans took art in special ceremony at the delaware county veterans memorial in marple this morning. they also placed wreaths at the memorial which lists the names of soldiers and veterans

from around the country. a memorial day tradition marched down the streets of gloucester city new jersey. veterans boy scouts and others walked from the township building to the delaware river today and that's where they placed a remote controlled boat carrying a wreath and american flags into the water. we are covering your community this memorial day on 6abc.com with photos and videos from local parades and events. also be sure to keep an eye on 6abc.com/weather for the forecast today and the week ahead. >> now to the latest on that controversial death of a gorilla at the cincinnati zoo. zoo officials are once again deferring their decision to kill the animal after a four-year-old boy fell into its enclosure. this as dozens of animal rights activists gathered outside the zoo for a vigil. abc's elizabeth hur is live in new york with the latest on the story. elizabeth. >> reporter: well, rick, so far nearly 200,000 people have

signed an on line petition asking for the boy's parents to be held accountable. well, this as police say they don't see that happening and zoo officials maintain they were not negligent. >> oh, my gosh. >> reporter: the video is disturbing. a four-year-old boy coming face to face with a 400-pound gorilla after somehow crossing through a barrier and plunging some 15 feet into the moat. >> barrier is adequate. we all need to work to make sure our families and our kids are safe whether you're visiting the zoo or shopping mall. >> a child has fallen into the gorilla cage. >> reporter: his mother watched in horror from above. >> mommy lovers you. >> reporter: until the scare ended with the zoo response team shooting and killing the endangered animal named harambe. >> i wish i wasn't here right now. i really do. this is a tragedy. >> reporter: these concerned community members now want to make sure harambe is never forgotten. amid growing outrage and anger

over the entire situation. >> obviously people are out with pitchforks and torches for the poor mother but at the same time, you know, nobody's perfect. >> reporter: the boy's mother in a now deleted facebook post responding as a society we are equipment to judge how a parent could take their eyes off their child. calling this an accident. and the zoo defending its decision to use lethal force instead of a tranquilizer. >> it was determined that the child was being injured, not potentially injured but was being injured then we had to make the decision to do what we did. >> reporter: well, that official went on to say no one is more devastated than the workers and the keepers at the zoo and also explained that this gorilla was three times bigger and six times stronger than a man and they're difficult decision saved the life of that young child now home recovering. we are live in new york, i'm elizabeth hur for channel6 "action news." sharrie he.

>> elizabeth, thank you. to texas now where we are talking about the weather and evacuations continue there because of severe flooding. the high water isn't just affecting people as you can see. entire farms have been flooded out. the cattle left behind wading through the water. the river in fort ben county continues to spill onto the roads and the surrounding homes and buildings. people in the town of rosenberg have been told that they have to evacuate. residents there say this is the third time that they've been told that they must leave because of flooding problems in the past year. >> broken windows and windshields tell the story of officers and deputies under attack. >> it's just a miracle today that we didn't have officers that were hurt. >> chief tells meteorologist, david murphy his deputy he constable responded to the call to assist the houston police department. >> one officer probably received ricochet from one of the shots as he took cover behind his vehicle. >> also in hill county in

texas a man and his 10-year-old son were rescued after their karcher and a pickup truck were swept away. >> thank you sharrie. back here we now know the name of the woman who died after being hit by an suv on the roosevelt boulevard in olney. 20-year-old crystal charles passed away over the weekend. she was hit friday while trying to cross the boulevard near bingham street. police say she was jogging and it appears she ran into the side of the suv. the driver did stop but no charges have been filed. an overturned tanker truck is causing traffic delays in newark, delaware. the truck was hauling about 4,000 pounds of milk when it flipped over at the intersection of east main street and library avenue. happened right before 4 o'clock. we're told the driver was able to get out and was evaluated at the scene. another truck was called in to pump the remaining milk from the tanker but officials say it will take another two hours or so before the scene is completely cleared. >> all right, it is time to get a check of how the cars are moving out there on the

roads on this memorial day. >> a lot of folks heading back from the shore and have they got home yet, matt, that's the question? >> i don't think so. i think they still have a little bit longer to go. we have a whole plethora of problems out there this afternoon rick and sharrie, including that overturned truck in newark that continues to block off 273 by 72 there by the post office. stay on 72 as an alternate. if you're on 95 northbound in delaware you start to hit the brakes right around 273. the slowing continues onto 295 and across the delaware memorial bridge into jersey. there is a crash on the jersey side of the turnpike just off the bridge but it's mostly off to the side. so, this is mainly just a volume delay across the bridge. farther north on the turnpike in mercer county there's another accident northbound by 7a. also off to the side so not impacting speeds a whole lot. but coming back if being down the shore speeds are still way down. just 11 miles per hour on 47 northbound in dennisville. the parkway you're still stop and go from sea isle to the work zone by the a.c. expressway. once you get on the expressway it is crowded now.

witnesses say everyone at the beach scrambled to help him. >> i was trying to calm the boy. the thing that was really soothing was like there was nurses here. i'm a nurse,. there's hey i'm a doctor. everybody came in and helped that poor child. >> lifeguards estimate that the shark was about five to 6 feet long. the boy suffered an 8-inch bite lined his right knee and to the top of his calf. this is the first shark bite of the year at neptune beach but researchers all along the east coast are working on ways to reduce the number of shark attacks. in north carolina they're testing shark seeking drones. in the atlantic grate white conservancy is launching a smartphone app to let beachgoers monitor the movements of tagged great whites there and one suspect is in custody after a professional soccer player was kidnapped in mexico. authorities rescued alan pulido after he managed to alert authorities to his location. he was kidnapped by four people on a highway while returning from a party

>> ♪ >> they remembered our fallen heroes today in ardmore, montgomery county. they held a service at saint paul's cemetery. they placed wreaths and fired off a cannon. several local veterans were in attendance for the memorial day ceremony. >> all right. meteorologist adam joseph is here now. we said that memorial day monday would be the worst of the three day weekend. >> of the three holiday weekend. >> really at the shore it was kind of a washout from start to finish. the rain still at the coast. as we look at storm tracker6 live double scan there's some of the rain new jersey delaware about to push away from cape may to atlantic city and surf city but we're also tracking a front to the north and west. you see a line near harrisburg and pottsville and now that will be pushing into the northwestern suburbs. really the heart of the delaware valley kind of a squeeze play with the rain to the north and west, rain to the south and east and at this point the heaviest rain is now off the coast. this is still some of the remnants of what was tropical storm bon flee in the

carolinas. that's why it's tremendously humid down the shore. presently right now and again some light showers still lingering but as we lift farther to the north and west, we are dealing with a cold front that is approaching, again berks county, lehigh valley as well as parts of lancaster and that particular area will be working into those northwestern suburbs as we go a little bit later on this evening. as we take a look at the bar graph here, because it all depends on location of where those temperatures were today. 71 in sea isle city. that was the high temperature. but again, it was tropically humid so it was a very uncomfortable rain. 76 in millville. in the city of philadelphia, 79 degrees. trenton with some pops of sun, some brightening to the sky, 80 degrees and in the lehigh valley with a couple hours of sunshine, temperatures spiked to around 85 degrees and we're still seeing those mid 80's in the northwestern suburbs and that is kind of destabilizing the atmosphere allowing those storms to pop to the north and west and again you see the cooler numbers but again, very

uncomfortable with the high humidity where the rain is falling at the shore. there you see the circulation near charleston, south carolina. the remnants of bonnie will remain down to the south but we broke some moisture away from that circulation up the eastern seaboard today and again that rain made it as far north as dover, millville and that was about it. and as you can see any of that sun is now being fitted away by the clouds increasing from the south. so tonight clouds win out, a scattered shower downpour or thunderstorm from the north and west coming in in spots, 62 to 68 degrees remaining very muggy overnight. and then for tomorrow in center city, the sun returns. we'll drop the humidity a little bit tomorrow at 87 degrees. less humid in the lehigh valley tomorrow but mostly sunny, a pretty decent summer-like day at 86 and if you're going to be down the shore tomorrow, morning clouds giving way to afternoon sunshine and a sea breeze kicking in so temperatures cooler there but nice at 77. the exclusive accuweather

section of philadelphia. a fire engulfed an american legion post in the 2300 block of orthodox street and that's where "action news" reporter dann cuellar is standing by tonight's. dann, what's the situation at this hour? >> reporter: well, rick, firefighters remain on the scene here trying to make sure this fire does not flare up once again. now, officials say there's a lot of wood inside this large two-story brick building which houses american legion post 396 as it has for many decades. ironically the fire broke out as veterans were commemorating memorial day. heavy smoke and flames poured out from the roof of the post. about 20 to 30 veterans had been inside commemorating memorial day when somebody noticed smoke in the building sometime after 3:00 this afternoon. >> somebody said we have a dumb waiter at the end of the bar and somebody said there's smoke coming out of the dumb
