honing their skills before they head off to college next. wednesday night, the big story on "action news" tonight is breaking news from the hunting park section of philadelphia. an 18-year-old has been killed by a hit-and-run driver. it happened two hours ago in the

3900 block of old york road. police say it was a woman who was driving a toyota preous that hit the teenager and, according to lawmen, the car had been stolen. the driver then dumped the vehicle in the 1300 block of west pike street and fled on foot. there is now a full-scale search underway. the victim was rushed to temple university hospital where he was declared dead. this was the scene tonight as the eighth-grade graduated from chester community charter school. it was a proud and happy occasion for all students and parents. but it was also an occasion of loss because of who wasn't there. zinas powell was shot and killed nine days ago, and the search goes on tonight for his killer. "action news" reporter christie ileto is live at the clarion hotel in essington where powell's classmates had their ceremony tonight. >> reporter: well, jim, of the 111 eighth-graders who graduated

here tonight, they cheerfully tell "action news" despite the sadness over the past couple of weeks, he's so proud of his son. in a sea of blue catch and gowns was a visible ansense at the eighth-grade graduation. >> zinas powell. [ cheers ] >> powell would have been walking across this stage. instead, his father accepted the 13-year-old's diploma to a thunderous applause. [ applause ] what was running through your mind when you got that diploma for him? >> so much. i was so happy. i was so impressed. i knew he could do it. i'm so proud of my son. >> reporter: weeks earlier, he was an innocent bystander when he walked out of a corner store into a hail of gunfire. this represents the undercurrent of violence gripping the small city. [ cheers ] and for 91 children like zinas,

he was collateral damage. >> he would have been here walking across the stage tonight. >> he's in spirit. he's got his dad, mom and grandmom. >> reporter: flowers and a large poster with their signatures not to mention the physical education award. >> that's all i can say. my baby made his mark. and it ain't never going to go nowhere. they never going to forget him no way. >> reporter: now, his family says zinas was planning on attending a boarding school next year. as for his case, police have made no arrest. reporting live in essington, christie ileto, "channel 6 action news." jim? >> thank you, christie. trenton police are investigating a homicide on the city streets tonight. a man was gunned down at elmer and whitaker at 6:30. he was rushed to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead. authorities have no word of a suspect or a motive. police have identified a 78-year-old murder victim whose body was found yesterday inside his theodore home in -- theodore

street home in southwest philadelphia. that picture is from decades ago. he was joseph daly. and police say he had been assaulted and strangled several days before. he had actually been attacked for the first time last friday. police are also looking for daly's dark blue 2003 ford e-150 with pennsylvania tag pd5-338z. two dozen residents needed to be evacuated from their apartment building tonight in germantown because of fire and police and fire officials minutes ago had declared this arson. it happened on east church lane two hours ago. firefighters placed the situation under control within 30 minutes and fortunately nobody was hurt. there is still no official cause in monday's massive blaze at an american legion post in the frankford section of philadelphia that authorities believe the culprit was a motor in a dumb waiter during the post

memorial day banquet. "actio"action news" reporter dan cuellar is there tonight. >> reporter: jim, two days after that devastating fire here at american legion post 396, war veterans were back at the site trying to salvage what they could. >> there's a lot of stuff in here that does mean a lot to our hearts and everything else. this club is our heart. >> reporter: post commander pat driscoll describing the painful journey of sorting through items -- 92 years of historical items that were lost and those that could be salvaged. >> this is a purple heart that we were able to save out of thing. that was also awarded to one of our veterans and donated to the post. >> we lost three lifetimes of memories. my own kids grew up in this post. >> reporter: the devastating fire at american legion post 396 broke out during a banquet veterans were having on of all

days memorial day. the inferno that consumed the two-story structure went to four alarms before over 100 firefighters were able to bring it under control. the fire was so intense veterans were not allowed to retrieve the two u.s. flags in front of the building. but one firefighter was not about to let them go down with the ship. >> they wouldn't let me go get them but a fireman grabbed the flags from the front of our building as it was burning and brought them out to us. >> reporter: from chopper 6 h.d. today, you can see that the building was heavily damaged. the second floor collapsed and will have to be demolished. the building is insured and there's hope the first floor of this historic american legion post can be saved. it was named after the first veteran from the bridesburg area killed in world war i. and yet despite the misery of their loss, veterans still had time to thank those who tried to help them. >> we got to give compliments to the fire department and to the people from l&i and everything else because they did one great job with this. >> reporter: now, as you can imagine, there were a number of events that were put in jeopardy

because of the fire. but fortunately, other posts have stepped in to hold the events at their facilities until 396 can get back on its feet. we're live here in the frankford section. i'm dann cuellar, "channel 6 action news." >> dann, thank you. an nba prospect who was a standout during his high school days in philadelphia, a basketball standout, is facing charges of attempted murder tonight. 22-year-old rysheed jordan played for vaucks high school in north philadelphia and then went on to st. john's university. but philadelphia detectives say that last friday during an attempted holdup on the 2400 block of diamond street, he shot a man in the arm. police took jordan into custody this morning. this past season, he played in the nba's developmental league for the philadelphia 80 senators. a man wanted for beating and aa woman and assaulting her daughter is frankford is now in custody. the u.s. marshal's fugitive task

force caught up with malik bailey at 5:15 this afternoon at mckean and water street in south philadelphia. authorities say bailey ran but they chased him down and arrested him after a brief struggle. police say bailey knows his victims. the new garden airport in chester county has some patching up do. that after a plane crashed into a hangar. the two-seater plane went into a wall of the building at 9:00 a.m. >> the aircraft actually went through the -- into the hangar. it went completely into the hangar and where it remains. it didn't come out the other side. it stayed in there and it missed several other vehicles inside the structure. so it was very fortunate. >> officials believe the vintage plane had been trying to take off when it lost power. the pilot and the passenger are expected to be okay. we are learning more tonight about the first baby born with the zika birth defect in the continental united states. the hospital in hackensack, new jersey, released this photograph of the infant girl. she is in the intensive care

unit. doctors say the prognosis is generally very poor for these cases. the baby has microcephaly which is an ab normally small head and brain. and she had to be delivered prematurely at 35 weeks via c-section. >> she underwent an uncomplicated surgery and she is trying her best to cope with this emotionally. >> the 31-year-old mother is from honduras and came to the united states seeking better medical treatment. doctors say her ultrasounds early in pregnancy were normal and only a recent scan uncovered the birth defects. some inner city parents are celebrating their own success tonight after graduating from a special college prep class. it is part of the league charter school in camden but tonight the students weren't the ones getting applause. given the chance to did back to school. they've been out of high school for years and some of them needed learning help on how to study again, even take notes to apply to college. >> our 2016 graduating class. [ applause ] >> reporter: 24 parents who never got to finish college are headed there now. they graduated tonight from a special lead academy college prep course offered by their children's charter school. in january, they started taking classes on time management, study habits and how to handle stress. this is the first class of graduates from the newly created parent institute for adult learning. >> shepherd. [ cheers and applause ] >> reporter: the adults have already been accepted to rowan university with financial assistance covering most of the costs. it's a chance for parents to reinvent themselves after dropping out of college to support their families or never going at all. >> i just look forward to bettering myself and being a better role model for my children. >> prepares you for what's to

41%. both candidates are faring poorly with voters when it comes to likability. about half of those polled found both clinton and trump strongly unfavorable. meanwhile, information is coming out of sworn statements released in the class action lawsuit against trump university. a former employee said that he resigned after six months as a sales manager because he believed that it "was a fraudulent scheme that preyed on the elderly and uneducated to separate them from their money." the trump university playbook says "money is never a reason for not enrolling in trump university if they really believe in you and your product, they will find the money." hillary clinton seized on the trump university controversy today as she campaigned with new jersey senator cory booker and rock star jon bon jovi in newark. some of her harshest attacks yet, she called donald trump a fraud. that's the word she used and

the victim in murder suicide at ucla today has been identified as engineering professor william klug. the deadly shooting this afternoon led to a lockdown of the entire campus and a manhunt that lasted hours. it turns out the gunman had also taken his own life. police have not yet identified the shooter or a motive. the 911 call from a mother whose son fell into a gorilla enclosure at the cincinnati zoo has been released. the boy's mother watched at 400-pound gorilla hovered offer her 3-year-old son and dragged him around. as she is talking to 911 she's trying to comfort her child. >> son fell in with the gorilla. it's a male gorilla. be calm! be calm! he's dragging my son. >> fearing for the boy's life, zoo officials say they made a

quick decision to shoot and kill the 17-year-old endangered animal. in a statement today, the child's mother said her son is doing well. there is word that a french ship has detected the ping from the black box from egypt air flight 804. the data and cockpit voice recorders could reveal whether the plane went down because of a mechanical failure or a hijacking or a bomb. of course, it will still be a challenge to retrieve the black boxes, thus authorities say they'll have
