least 20 people are dead after a gunman takes hostages and opens fire inside an orlando nightclub. we want to begin with the breaking news out of orlando, florida where a gunman walked into a crowded nightclub and opened fire. the fbi is investigating whether the gunman had ties to radical islam. dozens people are injured and 20 dead. this unfolded at 2:00 a.m. inside the pulse orlando nightclub. witnesses reported seeing a man walking into the nightclub armed with an assault rifle. he took hostages and opened fire. the nightclub posted on its facebook page warning people to stay away from the area.

people exploded a controlled device to get inside the nightclub and rescue the hostages. 20 people were killed and 42 others hurt. one woman said she received a text from her son who was hiding in the bathroom and asked her to call police. the last message said quote he is coming. my son was in there with his boyfriend and two other friends, the two friends went to the, when they went to the bathroom they heard 20 shots, and then they recognized it as being a shooter they took off running while waiting outside the club, they saw juan who is my son's boyfriend being transported into the ambulance with multiple gunshots, but my son has not been heard from. it was one after another and after another, it lasted so

3:00 p.m., 84. 5:00 p.m., 83 degrees, here's the current conditions in southern canada. it's 40s and 50s and 30s up here. this cooler refreshing air mass drops south over the next 48 hours sore, and brings a nice, pleasant change in our region. i'll have the details in the exclusive accuweather seven-day forecast in just a little bit. guys? we have breaking news at home out of west philadelphia. more than 100 people are out of their homes right now after a three-alarm fire inside an apartment building. the orange glow of the fire and the thick smoke could be scene from the roof of the netherlands apartments on chestnut street. the fire erupted at 1:00 a.m. more than 100 people were foyersed from the building. no injuries were -- forced from the buildings. no injuries were reported. the building is made up of 6

sections. fire officials say they were able to contain the blaze to one floor. 28 fire officials responded along with 100 firefighters. the resident were taken to the kato school on the 4500 block of ludlow street. there's damage to the buildings with smoke and water damage on the other floors. residents of the building should be let back in later today. philadelphia fire commissioner sang the praises of the firefighters who kept control of the fire. this was one of the most incredible fire stops i've ever seen. so far no injuries, no fatalities, no injuries to our firefighters. we know that l&i officials will be out to make sure the building is safe for folks to go back in. no word on what caused the fire. the fire marshal is investigating. the search continues this hour for the man who slashed two

women in center city. "action news" was there as medics treated the women on locust street. police say the three got into an argument. him man who was wearing a dress pulled out a box knife and stabbed the women in the chest, arms and legs. police say the women know their attacker. several people are facing charges after fights broke out on south street in south philadelphia overnight. the action cam was on the scene at 12:30. several fights broke out. extra officers had to be called in to calm the crowds. police eventually closed south street at south 7th. they took several people into custody. delaware state police are investigating an accident that left two people in critical condition. the vehicle ended up in some trees after the driver lost control on route 1 in bear. this happened in the southbound lanes of route 40 at 12:30. two people were trapped inside

the wreckage. firefighters freed both victims. they are in critical condition. police in orlando, florida continue to investigate the shooter of christina grimmie. there is no indication that her shooting and the shooting at the pulse nightclub are related. meanwhile, police are looking into the motive for her killing. christina grimmie was a rising star in the music world. she was shot signing autographs after her concert. 27-year-old kevin james loibl went to the concert to kill christina grimmie. there's no indication he ever stalked her or new her personally. the suspect is not from orlando, the suspect traveled to orlando to commit the crime and had plans to travel back to where he came from.

we continue to follow breaking news coming in from orlando. this is where a deadly inside a nightclub overnight is being treated as an act of domestic

terrorism. investigators say 20 people were killed in the pulse nightclub. the orlando police chief said this started at 2:00 a.m. as the gun battle between the police officer and suspect outside the nightclub. the shooter then headed into the crowded club and opened fire. a three hour standoff and hostage situation ensued. police ended that standoff by blowing open a wall rescuing the hostages and shooting and killing the gunman. along with the dead there were 42 others taken to area hospitals. they are injured. authorities are trying to determine if the shooting has ties to islamic terrorism. let's go to trish hartman inside the satellite center and trish you have been keeping track of the new information about this and the video coming in from the horrific terror attack in orlando. bring us up to speed. >> reporter: we are learning that president obama has been briefed on the situation and governor tom wolf has tweeted about the incident in the last

it's going to hit you like a ton of bricks there. the humidity levels will pull back during the afternoon as the cold front comes through and smooth sailing through wednesday and thursday. it looks good for the start of the week. 86 degrees in the city of philadelphia. radars are crystal clear. we don't have to worry about any form of precipitation today. 87 is the forecasted high. this will happen in the next hour or two. maybe we go a degree or two higher. once we get around midday or so, that's when the numbers start to cool down. we started out at 77 which is close to the normal high of 82 for this time of the year. one thing with all the sunshine, basically being the middle of june. the angle of the son is high. put on the sunscreen and reapply it alternative. summer a around the corner, it will be at that point we get into the july and august, the angerle gets lower in the sky. right now this is about as high as it ever gets.

news out of orlando, florida, this morning. this is where a gunman walked into a crowded nightclub and took hostages and opened fire. the gunman has been identified as omar matine of saint lucy's florida. 20 people are dead, dozens more injured and the gunman died in a gun battle with swat officers. let's go over to trish hartman in the satellite center. >> reporter: the gun has been

identified as omar matine of st. saint lucy, florida. about 20 people are dead after the gunman opened fire inside the packed pulse nightclub. 42 others were injured, officials say about 320 people were inside the nightclub when all this happened. youtube video shows people laying on the ground as first responders tried to help them. around 2:00, he exchanged gunfire with police outside the nightclub and went into the club and started taking hostages. around 5:00 a.m. a s.w.a.t team went into rescue the hostages, he was killed during a shootout with the officers. people were seen carrying the injured out of the club and down the street and transported in police pick up trucks to the hospital.

patrons described hearing dozens of gunshots inside. we hear from club goers and family members outside the nightclub. we're investigating this from all parties prospective as an act of terrorism. anytime we have dozens of victims from any of our communities we can quaff that as terror ait activity. any information about the shooting contact the fbi. we are awaiting for a live press conference from orlando in the next 15 minutes. we want to go to national security advisor, ed turzanski. ed we're hearing this suspect was a lone wolf.

let's keep in mind lone wolf does not mean unknown wolf. there are indications there are things that have to do with prior axes -- actions and statements he made that put him on a watch list or radar screen. it did not take long to identify him. it is stunning that the fbi called it an act of terrorism or suggested it maybe so. usually it takes a much longer time for the bureau to get to that point. ed as we know so far police in orlando are saying they don't think there are anymore threats out there because of the shooting, the decision was made quickly, do you know how they may have come to the conclusion? yes, it may have been what he said and the fact pattern of the attack that hadn't been made known to us yet. so, what actually went on in the

club, did he make any statements to individuals, again, we're doing a little reverse engineering without all of the information, but they very quickly identified who it was, it suggests that they had prior knowledge of him, and those pieces of information that we don't yet have, are probably what led them to make the statement they did. and we are hearing now that matine was a u.s.-born citizen. as police continue to follow the case and figure out what's happening, how does that play into the story? nydia, i don't think it matters very much is what we're seeing radicalization takes place among american citizens, as well as immigrants. in this case, his parents were afghanistan refugees, at least that's what's been reported so far. not at all unusual that you would have a first generation american who would be

radicalized. it's a pattern we see quite commonlily not just in the u.s. and north america, but throughout europe. stunning, too, that police were able to detonate the controlled explosive to get inside and save some 30 hostages. yes and we need to keep in mind law enforcement practices this very efficiently and very frequently, so we're fortunate that you have the high degree of inter operability between local and federal law enforcement, sad to say, we've had to go to school on how to deal with attacks like this. we are much better at it today than prior to 9/11. ed what comes next? we know police have identified the lone gunman, what comes next in making sure sure that he has any other connections in orlando

90. after lunch the numbers retreat a little bit. the jersey shore you have a land breeze. it's 86 already at the airport in atlantic city. on the beach we are expecting temperatures to top out at 85. everybody picks up the lands breeze except for cape may. you'll pick up with the bay breeze. you'll deal with cooler temperatures, because the waters are cooler in the delaware bay. everybody else this is a lands breeze, everybody will warm up from 84 to 86 degrees. the exception is cape may where you will top out at 78 or 79. guys? all right, chris, thank you. we have breaking news here at home out of west philadelphia. more than 100 people are out of their homes after a three-alarm fire inside an apartment buildings. orange glow of fire and thick smoke could be seen from the apartments on chestnut street. the fire erupted at 9:00 a.m. more than 100 people were forced

from the building. no injuries were reported. the fire went to three-alarms before firefighters were able to bring it under control. the building was made up of 6 sections. fire officials contained the building to the 4th floor of the building. 28 fire vehicles responded along with 100 firefighters. the residents who had to evacuate were taken to the kato school on ludlow street. there's damage of smoke and water on the other floors. residents should be allowed back in today. philadelphia fire commissioner are sang the praises of the firefighters who worked to keep the fire contained. while i'm early in my time in philadelphia. i've been all over the country this is one of the most incredible fire stops i've ever seen. so far no injuries, no fatalities, no injuries to our firefighters. good to hard there were no injuries, we learned that l&i

"action news" was there as medics treated the women on the 1300 block of locust street. police say there was an argument between the 3 at 2:00 a.m. the man dressed as a woman pulled out a box knife and stabbed the women in the chest arms and legs. they were taken to jefferson hospital and listed in stable condition. the women know their attacker. several people are facing charges after a fight broke out on south street in south philadelphia. the action cam was at the scene at 12:30. several fights broke out among

large crowds. extra officers had to be called in to calm things down. police closed south street at south 7th. they took several people into custody. city council is expected to vote on the soda tax bill. a city council committee approved an amended version last week. the revenue from the bill is expected to generate $91 million during the first year and fund pre-k and several other programs. mayor kenny wanted a 3 cents aounce tax. closing arguments are expected to get underway in the corruption trial of chaka fattah. ed rendell said chaka fattah should be convicted and sent to jail if the charges are proved to be true. monday septa riders can by new transit cards.

indicate his motives. police will tell us more, they need been pretty good to release information to the public as quickly as they can. that's been released publicly. well, i think more likely than not was an idealologicly motivated attack. now we go live to abc news special report on the shootings in orlando. i think it's very likely the case, we'll know more if there's any indication of that through personal papers and social media and so on. we'll learn more about that overtime but it would not surprise me. commission of a hate crime. [inaudible]. well our sadness, the fact that we well understand that it could have happened to anybody. it's the nature of terrorism that all of us feel there but for the grace of god go i. that's the very function of it. 20 people are dead. 40 people injured, thousands upon thousands of people feel some degree of fear. all of these people every single one of them that died or was injured was innocent. it could have happened to any one of us, anywhere anytime that's the nature of terrorism. [inaudible]. yes, he is in his late 20s lives in port saint lucie. he is a citizen but that's not true of his family members. omar mateen.

what i've been doing among other things at the sheriff's request to make sure those those in the hospital trying to help their injured relatives to provide information. we have hipa laws. we're making sure there's no bureaucratic impediment to the injured. [inaudible]. well, let me put it this way, the nationality of the family members --, but again police are holding back the information until it's time for that to come back until they have done a full

background check on him. they have gone into his home and found whatever may be in computers and so on and social media. [inaudible]. do you have an update on the bomb? the police never said it was a bomb, she said it was a suspicious device. all the killing that was done with is an assault rifle. single weapon. it was done very quickly, also. i can't hear you ma'am. it will take many hours. there's an enormous amount of havoc. there's blood everywhere, i spoke with somebody on the site. there's an enormous amount of evidence to be collected system maskly over the course of many hours.
