new york, this is "america this morning." we do say good morning to you on a monday. the breaking details about the orlando nightclub massacre. >> investigators are still at the scene likely be there for the next few days trying to piece together exactly what happened. >> we're learning more about the victims of the attack. at least 50 people were killed in and the city of orlando ares releasing the names as the families are notified. >> we have live team coverage this morning. lana zak is standing by with reaction from president obama. but we want to start with elizabeth hur live in orlando for us this morning. good morning, elizabeth. >> reporter: good morning to you. as you can see behind me here, this street and that nightclub remain closed off, this is because as you say, authorities are still processing the crime scene and still identifying the victims.

overnight, the worst fears confirmed for these anguished mothers. >> it's terrible. he's my only child. >> reporter: both learning their sons are among the dead. >> he said he was going to died and he loved me. >> reporter: sharing these heartbreaking text messages revealing her son and others were held hostage inside this gay nightclub in orlando. 12k3w4r we're being told up possibly up to 15 remaining in the club. >> reporter: the three hours of terror ending after s.w.a.t. officers breach a wall of the club and exchange gunfire with the suspect. this morning, authorities are releasing more of those who didn't make it out alive and more about gunman omar mateen. according to officials he

arrived at the club with an ar-15, well organized and prepared. then called 911 after the shooting began to pledge his allegiance to isis. his ex-wife. >> this was a sick person that was really confused. >> reporter: so, again, 50 people killed and 53 others are still in the hospital this morning and for those families still waiting for any news on their loved ones investigators say they will updating those family members later this morning. >> that update expected at 8:00 a.m. police searching the home of the shooter overnight. what are we learning about what might have been recovered? >> reporter: from what we understand, authorities were at the scene, the condo of the suspect in southern florida, in st. lucie county. they searched that apartment for

hours. what if anything they found authorities are not saying. we do know what they're searching for are any clues that can help them zero in on a motive here. >> elizabeth, lot of hoping for those answers. among the astonishing images that have followed this tragedy, one demonstrated how close a police officer was to being a victim. this is his helmet. >> that helmet is now being credited with saving that officer's life. >> it's been an agonizing 24-hour-plus hours for the victims' family members. >> they're only releasing the names once those families are notified. many of those families waiting for answers. abc's amy robach shows us more

tried to escape. her friend helping others. >> there are the countless others still unaccounted for like jeff rodriguez. he sent his brother a text from the chaos saying he was bleeding. >> last text said i got shot, i'm bleeding out, i'm dying. i love you guys. >> we're starting to hear from those who managed to survive this attack as well. >> recounted the attack to our david muir. >> pushing my head down. it's a state of panic. we just wanted to get out. >> we saw people screaming and falling. blood everywhere. >> for about 15, 20 people got shoved into a one-person bathroom. >> was your instinct to hit the

ground. >> i wanted to go get as close to the ground as i could. >> i heard more gun shots and kind of dodged and ducked and hid behind a suv. when i noticed he had been shot and on his shoulder, i let him know i'm here, i'll do whatever i can. >> the support for the victims was immediate around orlando as the call went out for blood donors as well. >> in fact, one blood bank, estimated as many 700 potential donors were lined up around the block. some people were turned away to come back today or tomorrow. in new york city, though, there was quite a tribute at the stonewall at the 1969 riots that led to the gay rights movement. >> the gay pride parade in los angeles held another tribute as

said he doesn't know why his son opened fire in a crowded nightclub, he wants to reach out to the victims and their families. >> he said that he shares their pain and he said his son appeared normal saturday which he said was the last time you saw him. >> what would you say to him? >> i would say to him, why did he do that? why did he what he did. i'm shocked and surprised and mad about what he did. and i didn't raise him that way. >> he said his son became disstress after seeing two gay men kissing two months ago. >> he also told abc news he doesn't think his son was radicalized despite his making a pledge to isis. >> yeah, the fbi though had investigated mateen's possible

ties to terror. abc's chief investigative correspondent brian ross is following that angle. >> reporter: mateen to the fbi counterterrorism squad. he was interviewed three times over the last few years. >> we determined that contact was minimal and did not constitute a substantive relationship. >> reporter: there were no criminal charges and nothing on his record to block his purchase of the two guns used in the shooting bought just last week. >> legally walk into a gun dealership and buy firearms. >> reporter: as he was holed up in the orlando nightclub, he called 911. >> announced his allegiance to isis. >> reporter: the propaganda news agency said he was an islamic state fighter. no indication that the attack was planned by isis.

getting far more attention than what others have said. abc's lana zak has the story from washington. >> reporter: in the wake of the orlando massacre, donald trump is doubling down on his proposed ban of muslims into the u.s. tweeting, i called it and asked for the ban. trump's response to the shooting, the worst in the america history have prompted some to say he's exploiting the tragedy. megan mc. cane w cane was response was cutting. in a statement, trump put out political attacks, weak platitudes. for her part hillary clinton condemned the attack and took on a familiar campaign issue -- gun control. the call for gun control
