"action news"'s walt perez live now at the eastwick rec center in southwest philadelphia where they're holding a vigil tonight. walter. >> reporter: hi, guys. akyra murray was a star. plain and simple. more on that in just a moment but first we're told that akyra was in florida with her cousin and friend a young lady trying to make her way in the music industry. 20-year-old patience carter of philadelphia was in orlando trying to promote her budding music career. this youtube video shows her performing her new single. we spoke with carter's cousin who says she was looking for patience on social media when she heard what happened. >> my mom and them came in and they was like do you know patience got shot? she was at that party and i was just like oh my gosh because it was worrying me before my mom came in. >> reporter: patience carter was shot in the leg but she's expected to be okay. tragically her 17-year-old friend akyra murray is listed among those killed inside pulse nightclub. last week akyra signed her

letter of intent to play basketball at mercy college on a full basketball scholarship. she helped west catholic high win a city championship earlier this year but west catholic principal jim gallon her said basketball did not define akyra murray. >> top three in the class. very respectful to everybody. she just embraced everybody here and treated everybody as an equal. >> reporter: those sentiments are echoed by napoleon kincaid who runs the summer league akyra played for. >> perfect student. she had everything going for her. mannerism, top notch. you can't ask for anything better from a high school kid like akyra murray. >> reporter: we're still working on gathering information but that third person with ac kieran patience in florida. meanwhile the vigil for akyra will be held at the eastwick recreation center beginning at 5:30.

reporting live from southwest philadelphia, walter perez, channel6 "action news." back to you guys. >> walter thank you. of course any time something like this happens one of the big questions is inevitably how do we stop this from happening again. >> "action news" reporter john rawlins talked to local security experts today. he's live in wayne and, john, you also have more on the shooter in this case. >> reporter: well, if you see something, say something. we hear it all the time. it's good advice. people did say something in this particular case. the fbi became involved twice but in the end it opted not to take any further action. no system is perfect, certainly not one that involves human beings. his ex-wife says the man posing in the nypd shirt wanted to be a cop. coworkers described omar mateen as toxic. he was a belligerent conflicted man unmoored in short a perfect target for extremists. >> these are people that are

highly recruitable by organizations like isis by even the organizations historickingly like the nazi party looking for those true believers, people that if you join us, we will recognize your genius. >> reporter: mateen's talk of terrorist ties alarmed coworkers in 2013 the fbi investigated for 10 months. >> ultimately we were unable tougher fight substance of his comments and the investigation was closed. >> reporter: a former deputy under secretary of homeland security says it was a judgment call. >> it was a determination based on things that he was doing he was probably more of a blowhard than anything else. then he got married hadn't app child. those are usually anchors of stability. >> reporter: there is no magic formula to analyze risk and sometimes the judgment is wrong. can the odds of finding a would be jihadist improve. one thought if parents see trouble brewing they should go to authorities quickly. we spoke to philadelphia police chief inspector joe sullivan last month.

boulevard eastbound side approaching the old airport circle approaching 130, construction here is knocking out the right lane right there. can you see some of the flashing lights? and then just beyond this on 38 eastbound past 130, two of the four lanes are going to be closed all week long for emergency work on the gas main. so, this is any other where you wander to be this week traveling on the admiral wilson boulevard eastbound because it's going to be congested for much of the week. this is 295 southbound side by the black horse pike. we had a crash here earlier. it's gone now but still some southbound slowing. about a three minute delay on the southbound travel time. that at this point is just typical afternoon volume. in wilmington, though, there's a crash on the northbound side of 495 past terminal avenue. speeds there in the 20's. i would use 95 northbound instead. but you deserve a little bit of good news, don't you? yeah, in oreland this afternoon the oreland mill road bridge over sunnybrook creek reopened. that's good news. go ahead and use it is. let's grab the ipad do the

straight into the front of a camden county home. chopper 6hd was over the crash on rosemont avenue in pennsauken. investigator also say the driver was having a medical emergency when he lost control and struck the house. he died there at the scene. a passenger was rescued from the car and taken to the hospital in stable condition. police say the home was vacant. >> closing arguments are under way in the federal corruption trial of congressman chaka fattah. he and his wife arrived to a center city courthouse this morning before prosecutors made their case one final time. fattah's defense began presenting their closing arguments this afternoon. the philadelphia democrat is accused of misusing federal grants and taking an illegal loan to pay for his failed mayoral campaign. fattah claims his former political consultants are to blame. >> pennsylvania governor tom wolf will be out of the office for a few days to undergo treatment for prostate cancer. the governor is that scheduled to have an outpatient

77 degrees. and the normal high for this time of the year is 82. so, we're back in the comfort zone. currently 77 in philadelphia, millville, dover the same, wilmington 76, allentown trenton and reading 73 degrees. and down the shore with that west wind, that's a looked breeze not a sea breeze so the atlantic city airport and beach haven currently 78 degrees. this is the reason why it feels so good. dewpoints have dropped well below 60 degrees. this time of the year you get a dewpoint of 45 that indicates we have bone dry air mass and that will be sticking around really through the day tomorrow. satellite6 along with action radar is showing we have high pressure over the midwest and the midatlantic. the next storm system that we're tracking is well out to the west just beginning to move into the plain states with some severe weather. that will likely will bring us some rain on thursday. but tonight's going to be another very comfortable night. low humidity, overnight low 63 in philadelphia which is a

center. omar mateen was able to legally buy the weapons he used despite his alleged ties to terrorism. >> that news has a lot of people asking questions about how his application for a license could possibly get approved. "action news" investigative reporter wendy saltzman live now in center city to explain the questions and its answers that she found today. wendy. >> reporter: mateen was on that terrorism watch list but it didn't prevent him from buying those two weapons a day apart from each other at a licensed dealer in the days leading up to that mass shooting. now as orlando mourns there are cries for answers about how he slipped through the cracks. >> it's almost impossible, almost impossible to stop every single attack. >> reporter: senator tom carper of delaware the ranking nebraska on the senate homeland security committee. they expected about why no alerts were raised when suspected terrorist omar mateen purchased two high powered guns. >> the idea of allowing people on a terror watch list to buy weapons my dad would have said

that's crazy. >> reporter: mateen worked as a security officer at g4s solutions one of the world's lash evident security companies based in florida. >> he used his licensure, his registration with state screening agencies, he may have used that in order to be able to buy a weapon. >> reporter: here in philadelphia mayor jim kenney criticized what he says are lacks laws across pennsylvania and across the nation. >> only purpose for assault weapon is to kill people which obviously we've seen. very effective in doing that. >> reporter: kenny was part of city council when they tried to tighten permit laws in philadelphia but it was superseded by the state and never enforceed. >> i don't know how we people today keep safe. >> reporter: in pennsylvania most gun licenses are approved in a matter of minutes. >> if your record is clean, no issues with a protection from abuse or domestic violence yes, you could be in and out of the store in a few minutes. >> reporter: mateen's license likely would have been approved here, too. he was removed from the fbi's watch list in 2014. >> the person has been

tangentially connected to terrorism should not be able to purchase an assault weapon. >> we think that we can actually pass legislation that denies somebody on a watch list the ability to buy at least assault weapons, that's a shot we should take. >> reporter: the senate had can considered a ban on buying weapons by suspected terrorists but that bill back in december did not have enough support to pass. now at this point senator carper says the fbi does have the technology in order to track weapon purchases of people on their watch list and suspected terrorists and he says that's exactly what needs to be do. live in philadelphia, i'm wendy saltzman, channel6 "action news." >> all right, windy, we'll see where things go from here. and during those agonizing moments of terror, first responders and good samaritans rushed toward the danger to help the wounded. some of the injured were being -- we're being told actually played dead. seconds likely seemed like an

will be sneaking in to my seven-day forecast. i'll let you know when and i'll also have an early look at father's day coming up in a few minutes. >> right now it's looking pretty good. >> good. like to hear that. cecily thank you. police in upper darby are trying to figure out who fired shots near the police station. this happened around midnight last night along west chester pike near north keystone avenue. a retiring lieutenant on his last shift was walking to his car and says he heard the gunfire. investigators are questioning one person but so far no one has been arrested. a 25-year-old woman from dover is accused of repeatedly stabbing another woman with a steak nye knife. delaware steak police have arrested and charged ninika perkins-hunt. they say before the crime the victim, the suspect and a third woman were involved in an argument at the alder park apartments. the 24-year-old victim is being treated for nonlife-threatening injuries. >> another local police force

is getting those body cameras. 10 officers with the chester police department will soon begin field testing cameras from several different vendors. eventually every patrol officer will get one. the goal is to create more transparency and trust between the officers and the public they serve. the cameras will cost up to $200,000. officials hope to pay for them with money from private donations. >> from our new jersey news room now, a driver was rushed to the hospital after being thrown from their vehicle in gloucester county this morning. chopper six was over the crash on route 55 near little mill road in franklinville. police say the driver lost control of their car around 5:15. no word yet on the victim's condition. smoke could be seen pouring from an apartment building in lehigh county overnight. the fire broke out around 2:30 along the 500 block of station avenue in coopers burg. this was the second time firefighters were called there in just a matter of hours.

earlier in the evening a power line fell on a shed sparking a fire. investigators are still trying to figure out if the two are connected. >> scientists are now drawing a new link between e-cigarettes and tobacco use among teenagers. with people all across the globe sending their love, their condolences and their strength and as you can see here it's also across the top of the home page the orlando police department where a letter from the police chief is going viral today. this is the chief there, john mina and his message is titled mission first, people always. he calls it the darkest day of his 25 years with the department. now just to give you an idea of what his officers were up against, this image of a helmet worn by one of the police officers in orlando there is also being shared on social media today. that helmet saved that officer's life. now, mina says that even before the first patrol units arrived on the scene, one of his office was working extra duty at that nightclub and engaged the gunman as he opened fire. he writes in this viral note, our first responders and swat teams faced a hail of gunfire as they rescued the hostages and we are blessed beyond words that none were gravely injured or killed. he goes on to say that he's

>> ♪ >> meteorologist cecily tynan here with what is really good news for the rest of the week. >> yes. it's nice. we got rid of the heat and humidity. we got rid of the really strong winds. so we've got a lot of sunshine, comfortable conditions this week. >> good stuff. >> got to love that. action cam taking a look in logan square today where we've had the blue skies, the sunshine. you'll notice that there is a little bit of a breeze out there but at least the winds have diminished since yesterday. yesterday we had wind gusts up to about 40 miles per hour. and storm tracker6 live double scan slowing we are starting the work week off dry. it's dry and it's pretty comfortable. normal high for this time of the year is 82. we're well below that. philadelphia and millville 77 degrees. allentown, trenton and reading 73. wilmington 76 and you see the direction with the wind flow out of the west so you got that land breeze, not a sea breeze so along the beaches just as warm as inland. atlantic city airport and

beach haven currently 78 degrees. and the wind speeds show that you it's still definitely on the breezy side anywhere from about eight to 15 miles per hour. but the winds will be diminishing as high pressure builds over us tonight and it's going to be a pretty comfortable night. satellite6 along with action radar showing that we are get something high thin cirrus clouds spilling over, over that ridge of high pressure but as that high pressure builds in, we'll see nothing worse than partly cloudy skies tonight and with that low humidity, there we go, it's going to be very comfortable. 54 degrees the low in the suburbs. 63 degrees for center city. and with nothing more than partly cloudy skies, you can can actually get a glimpse of the international space station. it's only visible for three minutes starting at 9:49. it travels from the west-northwest to the southeast. if you miss it tonight, you do have another opportunity to see it tomorrow night. it looks like sky conditions will be pretty good. so, tomorrow high pressure still in control over our weather. that will bring us another

beautiful day. temperatures up a notch, 80 degrees but low humidity and then heading into wednesday, wednesday a warm front will move through. what that will do is bring us warmer conditions with a high of 86 degrees, slightly more humid, mixture of clouds and sunshine and that slow moving low pressure will be bringing us some periods of rain really through the day on thursday and even lingering into friday. so, the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast, if you liked today, you'll like tomorrow. very nice. temperatures just slightly below normal with that low humidity, dewpoints generally below 60 degrees, a high of 80 degrees. you can want it warmer. we've got there on wednesday. mix of clouds and sunshine with a high of 86 and then we get a little bit unsettled on thursday. i don't think it will be rain all day long but periods of rain and drizzle on and off through the day. with that temperatures will be quite a bit cooler, 76 degrees. heading into friday, friday is a day of transition. we start with lingering rain. could cause some problems for the morning commute. by the afternoon, i think the
