... they are coming together tonight in philadelphia, a vigil to mourn the victims of this country's worst mass shooting ever. and they are come together in orlando. that city has been stricken to its core with the attack on a gay nightclub that claimed 49 lives. and they are come together in new york, a city that knows something about being victimized by terror. and while most of these people are thinking tonight of the lost lives and this excruciating example of the barberism of terrorism, law enforcement is focusing on 29-year-old omar mateen. they want to know everything about him and what brought him to turn the pulse gay club into a shooting gallery. it is monday night, and thing about blg on "action news" tonight is the evolving narrative of the orlando

massacre. five of the survivors of sunday morning's carnage are in grave condition. so official say the death toll could climb higher than 49. the fbi is saying that it sees no indication that gunman omar mateen was part of a plot directed from outside the u.s. as for motive, his former wife is saying that mateen suffers from mental illness. his father suggests that his son may have acted out of antigay hatred. but customers of the pulse have told the "orlando sentinel" that mateen was seen at the bar on many occasions. but most speculation of motive revolves around islamic radicalization. at various times, mateen has fledged to isis, al-qaeda and the nusra front. and it turns out that the fbi had reason to investigate mateen twice, in 2013 and 2014. but his name was then taken off the terror watch list. >> we're also going to look hard

at our own work to see whether there is something we should have done differently. so far the honest answer is i don't think so. i don't see anything in rehaving your -- reviewing our work that our agents should have done differently. >> mateen shot his way into the club with a semiautomatic rifle and a glock handgun. people who have been on a terror watch list are not automatically barred from buying guns. at henson -- ed henson sold mateen the two weapons. >> this man held multiple security licenses. he had an armed and an unarmed license. he passed the background check that every single person that purchases a firearm in the state of florida undergoes. >> for years, experts have been warning about the so-called lone wolf and according to president barack obama, mateen appears to have been just that. perhaps inspired by but not directed by any militant group. social media has given us painful access to the moment of the assault. this is a picture of amanda

alvear that went to pulse with her best friend. alvear happened to be live on snapchat when mateen burst in and opened fire. gunshots. both alvear and her friend were killed. and we know two young women from philadelphia were there. akyra murray just graduated from west catholic high school a week ago. she died in the gunfire. she was there with her friend patience carter who was promoting a music video. she also was shot but she survived the attacks. "action news" reporter chad pradelli is in florida women tonlts' vigil. reporter christie ileto will show us how thousands of people came to philadelphia city hall tonight. and dann cuellar is exploring security at local nightclubs. we begin with chad in orlando. >> reporter: it was an impressive turnout for the vigil. thousands were on hand and the

name of each victim was read aloud and the message here tonight was clear -- there is no place for hate. the silence and flickering candles were interrupted by 49 sounds of the bells. one each for those who perished in this sunday massacre. a downtown plaza was sea of colors, many from the lgbt community who vowed to not let the shooting deter their rights and freedom. >> i feel that it would have happened this weekend, it's trying to take that from us. it's trying to break up our community, and i feel like that's not okay. >> we wouldn't miss it for anything. we just want to show our support for -- it could have been us. it could have been anybody, so it's just sad. >> let us all be very clear tonight. to those who seek to divide us, lgbtq people, we are muslims and jews. we are blacks, whites and

latinos. [ cheers and applause ] >> reporter: and that was not the only message here tonight. the people of orlando want those filled with hate like omar mateen to know love wins and the pulse here beats on with love. mayor buddy dyer and a local muslim cleric condemed the attacks. >> we cannot believe that someone who claims my peaceful faith has brought a massacre and atrocity to our city an act of terror, an act of hate. >> he murdered. he murdered sons and daughters, fathers and mothers and ended the dreams of many young people who were just starting their adult lives here in orlando. tonight we remain a city in pain. >> reporter: and president obama will arrive here in orlando on thursday to pay respects to the injured and dead. live in orlando, chad pradelli, "channel 6 action news." >> the pain of this massacre hits especially close to home

for the west catholic community in philadelphia. 18-year-old akyra murray was fresh off her senior year, spending time in florida with friends and family after her graduation. she was a basketball standout helping west catholic win the city championship this year and just last week she signed her letter of intent to play basketball at mercyhurst college on a full scholarship. the school's principal and others who knew her say akyra was not only a star athlete but a beloved and bright young woman. >> top three in the class. , you have are you spugsd fst very respectful to everybody. she just -- she just embraced everybody here, and treated everybody as an equal. >> the attack in orlando has obviously seared the souls of many philadelphians and have of

those philadelphians came to city hall tonight. "action news" reporter christie ileto was there. a memorial that lasted nearly three hours. the mood was somber and at times angry, but this community, the lgbtq community is constantly a target of hate. [ sobbing ] their sobs echo. [ sobbing ] a sea of diverse people in orlando, packing the northeast corner outside city hall. but for this group, it's personal. >> akyra graduated last week from west catholic. intelligent and bright. >> reporter: philadelphia native akyra murray was one of the dozens slaughtered at a gay nightclub. >> we got to pray. we're going to pray. you got to stay strong because

she has to bury her child she has to transport her child back here to be buried. >> reporter: he got choked up. >> i can't tell you how devastating it is that she was >> a terrorist attack that was targeted towards the queer, lgbtq latino community specifically. and it's honoring the victims' lives. >> i'm angry and passionate about what happened. i'm mad. >> that could have been me. that could have been my family member, my sister, my brother. >> i'm so tired of gun violence. [ chanting ] >> reporter: although the shooting happened miles away -- >> you see all of the shooting. but it's never touched me so much. this is personal. i hate it. >> reporter: now, back here at city hall, people are still out tonight. this corner has become a place for many people to gather and to mourn together, and many people here told me that the only way to move forward is to always remember that love overcomes

hate. reporting live at city hall, christie ileto for channel 6. and "action news" was in bucks county tonight where people mourned for the victims. hundreds attended a candlelight vigil on the banks of the delaware river near the bucks county playhouse. they also read the names of each victim before holding a moment of silence. organizers say they want to stand against violence and hatred. >> we should not respond back with hate. that we should respond with lovn the end, i believe that love will conquer hate. >> it's tragic. and it could have been me. it could have been m my friends. it could have been my loved ones. >> actually, onement victims still has not been publicly identified. the event was orged by a local group called new hope celebrates which runs the annual gay pride parade. hundreds of people also gathered in wilmington tonight to pay respects to those killed in orlando and sent wishes to the wounded for fast recoveries.

they came together at the soldiers and sailors monument at delaware and broom for quiet reflection by candlelight. what happened in orlando points to the fact that ratcheted-up squurt at nightclubs have going to be a fact of life and that holds true in philadelphia. "action news" reporter dann cuellar got a firsthand look tonight. >> reporter: it was a sellout crowd at the fillmore philadelphia.with beefed-up police and security presence on hand, a presence aimed at keeping things safe and in the wake of the massacre in orlando, giving concert-goers a bit of ease. >> it is amped up. it should be amped up a little bit right now. you don't know what's going to happen afterwards. >> reporter: at the fillmore people are patted down as they go in and most people don't mind at all, especially in the wake of orlando. >> it's going to add extra time, but it's worth it. if it ensures the safety of everybody here, i don't care if i have to wait a little longer to get in. >> reporter: but some people

draw a line at just how far security measures should go. >> i mean, added security, added police, added precaution, that's a good thing, but i'm not going to have -- they're going to strip me down at the front door or anything like that. >> reporter: reggae music concert promoter says beefed-up security at these venues is a given. >> it's 2016. we live in a different world now. with terrorism and all this crazy stuff going on out there, so i think it can only benefit everybody's safety. >> reporter: still, some question the effectiveness of it all. >> beefed-up security not necessarily makes us safer at all. that's an illusion because you think you're going to go where the beefed-up security is? no, they're going to pick out somewhere where there isn't any security. >> reporter: and still others believe that if someone inside that nightclub in orlando had been carrying a weapon, the carnage may have been deterred. >> me a gun owner myself and having a license to carry, it can make a difference. haven't had to use it. don't plan to use it. but i think that can be enough of a deterrent.

>> reporter: and then we were reminded that if people live their life in a constant state of fear. it is better to use security measures, common-sense security measures, be aware of your surroundings and if you see something, say something. live at the fillmore in fishtown, i'm dann cuellar, "channel 6 action news." and donald trump today called for a dramatically different national posture to fight terrorism. in a speech from new hampshire, trump said that as president he would impose a ban on immigration from areas of the world with a history of terrorism against the united states. he did not acknowledge that omar mateen is from the u.s. trump also raised eyebrows when he told an interviewer this morning that president obama is purposely burying his head in the sand when it comes to islamic terrorism, perhaps because of ulterior motives. hillary clinton warned that demonizing muslims for the actions of a few will play into the hands of extremist groups. and she blamed america's partners in the middle east like

a bicyclist has been struck and killed in south jersey. chopper 6 was over the scene in

pennsauken late tonight along northbound route 130 at north park drive. police say the victim was hit by an s.u.v. shortly after 10:00 and pronounced dead at the scene. investigators have not yet said who's to blame. a south jersey community held a vigil tonight in honor of marlton native christina grimmie. the singer was murdered after her own concert in orlando on friday. tonight, hundreds of mourners prayed and lit candles at evesham township memorial complex. the 22-year-old was shot to death while she was signing autographs. her brother, marcus, was with her and was able to tackle the suspect. police have called marcus a hero and say that he saved lives. marcus and grimmie's friends were at tonight's vigil and shared their memories of the singer. ♪ >> she was awesome. she loved this town. she loved this state. she loved singing. she loved the lord. and she loved me. and she was my baby sister. >> police are still trying to

determine why the suspect, kevin loibl, killed grimmie before killing himself. the prosecution finished its closing statements today in the corruption trial of congressman chaka fattah. the jury was told that fattah ran a white-collar crime spree that stretched from philadelphia to washington. fattah's accused of paying back an illegal campaign loan with federal grant money and using nonprofit money to enrich family and friends. the defense continued and will continue its closing statements come tomorrow. the pew center for arts and heritage awarded 12 new fellowships tonight. more than $10 million was handed out to local artists during a ceremony in old city. the artists will use the money to enhance cultural programs around the region. more than 300 pierce college students are celebrating their new degrees tonight. the graduates received associate's, bachelor's and master's degrees during the ceremony tonight at the kimmel center. these graduates range in age

from 21 to 67. tonight's graduating class includes a couple can of married couples. >> congratulations. >> congratulations to all those pierce graduates. >> uh-hmm. >> let's get that accuweather forecast from cecily tynan. and beautiful weather on the way tomorrow. stormtracker 6 showing that we do have a few sprinkles across south jersey right now. a lot of them not making it to the ground but upper level disturbance is moving through tonight. temperature-wise, though, pretty comfortable, 72 degrees in philadelphia, allentown, 66. and wilmington, 69. and cape may, currently 70 degrees. so you can see these clouds really spilling in from the northwest with an upper level disturbance. can you see the sprinkles across south jersey. but if you look across northern pennsylvania, the clouds are breaking up. so they will continue to push away and thin out in the overnight hours. and the bus stop forecast for the kids still in school -- my kids are in their last week -- mostly sunny, very pleasant.

tonight he's prepared to share again as he turns back to 1970. >> one of my best nba finals ever was when willis reed walked out after returning from his leg injury in 1970. it reminded me of my uncle jerry. he got his leg bit by pit bulls in a dog fight. i don't condone dog fighting or his behavior. it taught me a valuable lesson. you don't fight pit bulls if you happen to work in the butcher shop. the pit bulls can smell the meat and they can't control themselves after that. he had no calf muscle after he got bit, so his leg look like a pirate dude with a wooden leg. it was so funny. it was funny. he'll show it to you if you ever meet him.
