forever. let's be clear. clearasil works fast. ♪ we're getting a closer look this morning at some dramatic newly released video of the brave takedown of a college gunman -- or a gunman i should say on a college campus in seattle. >> video surveillance caught that student hero putting his own life before the lives of his fellow students. here's abc's neal karlinsky. >> reporter: this isn't an action movie but real-time video of what a hero actually looks like. the just released surveillance video from 2014 shows alleged seattle pacific university gunman aaron ibarra reloading his shotgun inside the school. three students have already been shot when right there, john meese, a 22-year-old senior at

this morning on "world news now," we have new information on the deadly alligator attack on a 2-year-old at disney world. >> the ceo of disney releasing a statement overnight after the little boy was identified. the latest on the investigation and a warning from animal experts on how to stay safe. we also have new video from inside the orlando nightclub as dozens of people huddle together. a survivor shared it with his family during that three-hour ordeal. this as we learn new details about the shooter's wife and her possible involvement in that attack. and honoring the heroes in orlando, the hospital staff who worked tirelessly to save those injured in that nightclub shooting. we're learning how they handled such an overwhelming influx of patients in dire need and the powerful emotions that they must set aside to carry on their work. plus a breast-feeding mother finds herself in the crosshairs of an angry onlooker.

their showdown in a target store is going viral after store employees rushed in to defend that mother. we have those stories all ahead on this thursday june 16th. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now." good morning, everyone. i'm kendis gibson. >> and i'm diane macedo. we begin with that heartbreaking end to what was supposed to be a fun family vacation at disney world. now matt and melissa graves are preparing to bury their 2-year-old son. >> and we do know his name now. he is lane. this is his feto. he was found not far from the water's edge, where he had been playing before that gator pulled him underwater. the sheriff delivered the news to the graves family with the help of a catholic priest. >> the family is from elkhorn, nebraska just outside of omaha. they belong to st. patrick's catholic church. and lane's older sister is a student at the church's school. parish members say their entire community is just devastated and they're now offering their prayers and support. >> and just days before lane graves was pulled underwater,

guests at a wedding spotted this gator in the seven seas lagoon there in disney world property. though it's not known, however, if this is the same one that took the toddler. >> wildlife officials have captured and removed five alligators from that area, and they are being tested now for identification purposes. abc's marci gonzalez has more on how search crews finally found the little boy. >> reporter: dive teams on disney property in florida making the heart-wrenching discovery. the body of 2-year-old lane graves found six feet underwater, not far from where he was dragged away tuesday night by an alligator. >> the body was completely intact. there's likely no question in my mind that the child was drowned by the alligator. >> reporter: the search effort nonstop since the first 911 call. it came in just after 9:00 tuesday night from the grand floridian resort, just across from disney's magic kingdom. the graves family there on vacation from nebraska.

little lane playing a foot from the shore of the seven sears la gon in ankle-deep water when that five to seven-foot gator grabbed him. his parents trying desperately to save the toddler. >> the father entered the water and tried to grab the child. was not successful in doing so. >> reporter: along that beach there are signs that read "no swimming" but nothing warning about alligators, which tourists have captured on camera there. >> an alligator! an alligator! >> reporter: as recently as two weeks ago. disney world for now closing its beaches and reviewing its signage. >> everyone here at the ball disney world resort is devastated by this tragic accident. >> reporter: and officials euthanized five alligators captured in the lagoon. they say if the one that killed lane graves isn't among them they'll keep searching. kend sxis diane. >> our thanks to marci there in orlando. and as many of you know, disney is the parent company of us here

at abc news. and disney chairman and ceo bob iger has spoken personally to the graves family to offer his condolences. >> he also issued a public statement about the trangedy saying "as a parent and a grandparent my heart goes out to the graves family during this devastating lose. my thoughts and prayers are with them and i know everyone at disney joins me in offing our deepest sympathies." >> so we know this, florida is alligator country. the population is estimated right now to be about 1 million. but fatal attacks are relatively rare. >> still, this tragedy is sarg so many people. abc's gio benitez spoke to an expert who has important advice for potential visitors to the area. >> if you're out at night carry a flashlight. don't get in there and splash around in the water. the other thing we tell folks is don't feed them. it's against the law to feed an alligator in the wild. if you feed an alligator in the wild or any animal at all you

alter that animal's behavior and instead of being afraid of us they start coming over to where people are because they think they've got food. that's an attractant. don't do it. you get caught you can pay a fine, possibly go to jail. >> good tips there. we will have much more on this story in our next half hour. but we want to mf on to the other story that's developing in orlando. president obama and vice president biden will head there today to meet with the families of those killed in sunday's nightclub massacre. also, there is new video that was shot inside the club while the attack was under way. >> it may be difficult to watch, but it shows a group of people huddled together in a bathroom. the man who recorded it, miguel leyva, says he was with up to 30 people and they were there for four hours. leyva, who was injured in the attack, says he sent that video to loved ones to let them know they were still alive. >> we're also seeing the gunman in a documentary about the 2010 gulf oil spill. he was work a security job at the time. this is in pensacola, florida.

>> also, the owner of a florida gun shop tells abc news that the gunman tried to buy body armor and bulk ammunition from him. but the sale was turned down because the shop owner said the gunman seemed suspicious. the owner also claims he notified authorities about those suspicions three weeks ago. >> and this morning the attacker's wife remains under scrutiny about what she may have known before the massacre. abc's linzie janice is covering that angle. >> reporter: dozens of fbi agents in florida and across the country scrutinizing every aspect of noor salman's life. interviewing friends, family, anyone who knows her. she hasn't been seen in public since stopping by her apartment monday night. >> as exhaustive a review of evidence as you will find in the united states. >> reporter: sources tell abc news that when the fbi obtained surveillance footage of salman with her husband as he bought ammunition, when they confronted her with the video she soon began cooperating. reportedly telling them she tried to talk her husband out of

harming anyone. it's still unclear if she knew an attack was imminent. but shortly after the massacre salman took down her facebook page. mateen's father telling us he does not know if she was involved. >> my daughter-in-law is the most sincere and the most wonderful lady. >> reporter: law enforcement sources tell us after salman started answering questions they gave her a polygraph test. linzie janis, abc news, fort pierce, florida. >> linzie, thank you. the senate is looking into a series of incendiary facebook posts made by the killer the day of the shooting. in them he railed against what he called the filthy ways of the west and he warned of attacks in the u.s. in the next few days. the senate homeland security committee has now sent a letter to facebook ceo mark zuckerberg requesting information and a briefing on the shooter's online activity. and the shooting in orlando has prompted a marathon session on capitol hill. a democratic senator from connecticut has staged a filibuster, hoping to force a

vote on gun control. senator chris murphy began speaking at 11:21 yesterday morning to a mostly empty chamber. murphy said it was unconscionable that congress has done nothing to change the gun laws since the newtown school massacre. >> he hasn't even taken a bathroom break as yet. donald trump wants to meet with the national rifle association to discuss gun laws. trump now says people on the terror watch list should be barred from purchasing firearms. the nra says they'd be happy to meet with trump. then restated its position. no gbz funs for terrorists, per. at a rally in atlanta trump said he would save the second amendment. he said the death toll would be smaller if the clubgoers had guns. and hill cy clinton tweeted "welcome to the quauz." and said trump was essentially forced into legislation to prevent people on the terrorist watch list from buying guns. clinton continued to slam trump as unfit to be president and she labeled his call to ban muslims

from entering the country as reckless. overseas now wrtd wreckage of egyptair flight 804 has been spotted deep in the mediterranean sea. the aircraft disappeared nearly a month ago from paris to cairo killing everyone on board. a search vessel detected the wreckage between the greek island of crete and the egyptian coast. the next step will be to map the area and then begin an underwater search. the fbi, meanwhile, is offering a $50,000 reward for helping find one of california's most notorious criminals. the golden state killer is linked by dna to at least 12 murders, 45 sex assaults, and dozens of burglaries. his crime spree began 40 years ago in the sacramento area and eventually spread to southern california. investigators say that killer is now 60 to 75 years old. well, the federal reserve has decided to hold ifrpt rates steady after a disappointing jobs report last o'month. the fed decision was widely anticipated and had little impact on the stock market, with the dow down 34 points.

and walmart is eliminating some 1,500 jobs. its stores mostly on the west coast. the positions affected involve invoicing and accounting operations. employees will be given a choice to remain with the company but in other positions. to baseball. all about numbers. maybe more than any other sport. and there's a lot of them in this next story. so pay attention. >> so we're talking about ichiro suzuki. of the marlins now. and some are calling him baseball's all-time hits leader. so he tapped one down the first base line yesterday in san diego, giving him 4,256 hits during his career in japan and in the majors. >> later he doubles to right, making it 4,257 hits. that's one more than pete rose's record, which was set entirely in the major leagues. rose reacted saying, "next thing you know they'll be counting his high school hits."

a private spacex rocket successfully launched two satellites yesterday, but then when it was time to come home it failed to land on a ship in the atlantic. it crashed instead violently on the deck of that unmanned ship.

until this the company had three successful ocean landings. spacex will launch a cargo mission to the international space station next month. hoping that one goes better. well, back on dry land, as we learn new details about the orlando gunman we're hearing story after story about acts of bravery and of course kindness. >> and many of those stories are coming from inside the hospital where victims were hushed and from those unsung heroes who've been working around the clock to help those patients heal both physically and emotionally. here's abc's dr. jennifer ashton with more on that. >> reporter: tearful reunions. dramatic revelations from that night of horror in orlando's biggest emergency room. the trauma team's leader still raw with emotion. >> i was walking out of the hospital, and walking out i saw team members walking in to work crying. and i just -- i just couldn't express how -- it's hard to

describe how you feel. >> reporter: a trying time for this level 1 trauma center, nurses included. >> dr. cheatham, would you talk a little bit about the expertise of the trauma nurses, the surgical nurses and the emergency room nurses in this case? >> i will tell you we have the best nurses in the world. there is no question in my mind. [ applause ] >> reporter: shot in the leg three times and left to die, angel colon was reunited with his nurse, megan noble. >> i think you were my second patient because i got the call at like 3:00 a.m. and i came right in. and he was very brave. and i just remember his name was angel. it was a very chaotic night. all of this as the team worked together and we were really able to do a very good job. >> i love you guys. >> there were a lot of hugs. yeah. a lot of hugs. >> reporter: but the emotion

breast-feeding in public is legal in nearly every state, but as one mom in connecticut found out, criticism can still get pretty heated. >> she was breast-feeding inside a target store and found some unexpected allies. here's abc's byron pitts. >> reporter: it's the video that's quickly going viral. >> yes! >> reporter: watch as this bomb is harassed for breast-feeding her baby at a target. >> because i'm feeding my baby this man is going crazy. and i'm shaking. >> reporter: jesse maher was nursing her infant at the store's cafe when she says she was verbally assaulted by another customer. >> he kept going and saying that i was disgusting and kind of kept going off. i started to shake and get really upset. >> i'm here protecting her. okay? >> reporter: onlookers including a team of target employees coming to her defense. >> it's okay.

courthouse. >> reporter: the sheriff called the fbi, one of the two times agents investigated mateen and concluded he was not a threat. all this, his ex-wife tells abc news, as he was struggling with his sexual identity and becoming unhinged. >> and he was ill and he needed help and he could not be his true self. >> reporter: now as the fbi seeks more information on mateen's path to that terror-filled night in orlando, officials say they have discovered he was active online, using at least four separate facebook accounts. on the night of the shooting he wrote, "now taste the islamic state vengeance," adding "in the next few days you will see attacks from the islamic state in the usa." and then just before he died in the shootout with police mateen took the time to call a local tv station. >> he cut me off and he said, "i'm the shooter. it's me, i'm the shooter." and i didn't know what to say. and he started saying he did it for the islamic state, he did it for isis.

>> reporter: and now another possible missed signal. the owner of a gun shop in jensen beach, florida says mateen came in trying to buy body armor and bulk ammunition but he turned him down because he was suspicious of mateen and then called authorities to report his suspicions. that was three weeks before the shooting. there's been no immediate comment from police in florida. brian ross, abc news, new york. >> eye opening there, brian. thank you. we also have a second piece of new video recorded while the attack was happening. the dark images show clubgoers huddled together in a bathroom. the man who recorded it, miguel leyva, says up to 30 people sought safety with each other for four hours. leyva was injured and says he and others sent that video to loved ones to let them know they were still alive. and the latest information we have is that 25 victims remain hospitalized, six of them in critical condition. the first two funerals for those

sex scandal rocking the oakland, california police department. the interim chief has been removed after just six days on the job. the mayor said a number of factors caused her to lose confidence in ben fairow. the police chief that he replaced resigned abruptly amid allegations that a number of officers had sex with a teenage prostitute. and in baltimore the defense is expected to begin its case this morning in the trial of police officer cesar goodson. he's accused of murdering -- of murder, rather, second-degree murder and other charges in the death of freddie gray. goodson was driving the van that gray was riding in when he suffered a fatal spinal injury. overseas now. oscar pistorius will learn his new sentence for the murder of his girlfriend in three weeks. the former south african olympic runner removed his prostheses in court yesterday and hobbled on his leg stumps as a judge looked on. the demonstration was apparently an attempt by pistorius's defense team to portray him as a vulnerable man who deserves leniency.

the ongoing tournament has been plagued by fighting and security issues. and here at home the judge in that case of a former stanford athlete is facing some fresh fallout. >> anger has been growing over judge aaron persky handing down that six-month sentence to brock turner. and now he's been removed from presiding over a new sexual assault case. abc's matt gutman with the latest. >> reporter: the gavel closer to coming down on judge aaron persky, who sentenced stanford swimmer brock turner to what became a three-month jail term for sexually assaulting an unconscious woman. in a damning reversal santa clara county d.a. jeff rosen, who supported persky last week, now saying "we lack confidence that judge persky can fairly participate in an upcoming hearing in which a male nurse sexually assaulted an anesthetized female patient." the d.a. called icing persky a rare and carefully considered step. public defender gary goodman called it a political step against persky.
