good friday morning, everyone. i'm kendis gibson. >> and i'm diane macedo. we begin with the latest in the investigation into the orlando nightclub massacre. sources tell abc news the shooter texted his wife during the killings but authorities aren't sure whether she realized exactly what was happening. >> in the man-time she and the gunman's father apparently have been placed on no-fly lists as they remain under scrutiny and she may appear at some point before a grand jury. abc's brian ross has more on the tragedy including new images of the horror the victims went through. >> reporter: the new video captures the fear of that night. >> shh. >> reporter: quiet sobbing. as young men and women tried to

play dead in a bathroom stall. comforting each other. >> stay with me. >> okay. >> reporter: after the shooter had already opened fire on them. >> he just like looked through the crack of the stall and just started shooting into the stall maybe about 60, 70 rounds into the stall. >> reporter: miguel leiva was in the stall and he recorded the video before being shot in the foot. he described how some people then tried to make a break for it. >> as they were running out the bathroom he was just shooting them, killing them right there. >> reporter: throughout the attack omar mateen made full use of his years of law enforcement and security guard training. instructors gave him top scores for marksmanship year after year. >> he did the training because a lot of his friends were actually police officers. >> reporter: but just last year he was denied admission into a florida police academy. officials say he claimed it was anti-muslim discrimination. last month as mateen prepared for his attack employees say he

showed up at this florida gun store looking for bulk ammunition and body armor including plates like this one that can stop armor-piercing bullets. the store's owner, robert abel, said his employees were immediately suspicious about his requests. >> when he was on his cell phone, he had a conversation in a foreign language that was more concerning. >> reporter: the store refused to sell mateen anything and called the local fbi immediately after he left. >> we did contact authorities and let him know we just had a suspicious person that was in here. and there was nothing that would come of it. >> the store owner said his employees did not have mateen's name but they did have a grainy surveillance video of him which the fbi never came to see, and it has since been recorded over. so far no comment from fbi hblths. brian ross, abc news, new york. it was another somber trip for president obama, who flew to orlando yesterday to console families devastated by that

massacre. the president and vice president spent two hours meeting with survivors and those who lost loved ones, and they placed 49 white roses at a memorial in honor of each person killed. this is now the tenth time the president has visited the site of a mass shooting. as we reported, the gunman invoked his loyalty to isis during his rampage, and now we have a disturbing assessment from the cia director on the state of the war against isis. john brennan told congress that despite losing ground in iraq and syria the terror group remains a formidable network threat. brennan warned that u.s. efforts had not reduced the group's terrorism capability. that's in stark contrast to the message that president obama delivered earlier this week at the war against isis is firing on all cylinders. senator john mccain is linking the fight against isis to the orlando shooting and placing blame squarely on president obama. mccain said the president is directly responsible for the nightclub massacre. he claimed him for withdrawing from iraq and allowing the rise of isis.

mccain later walked back his comments, saying the president's policies are at fault, not the president himself. in the meantime, the shooting is fueling new debate on gun control on capitol hill, and the senate now poised to take action. we get more now from abc's karen travers. >> reporter: there will likely be votes in the senate on gun control, just not this week. democrats spoke for nearly 15 hours on the senate floor thursday, trying to push republicans to take action. connecticut senator chris murphy led the charge, speaking for much of his time about the 2012 shooting at sandy hook elementary. >> i've had enough. it's been four years, and nothing has been done. >> reporter: democrats have proposed a so-called no-fly no-buy bill. if you're on a terror watch list, which includes the tsa no-fly list, you shouldn't be able to buy a gun. but there's fierce opposition. the nra, most republicans and even some civil libertarians oppose banning gun sales to those on watchlists, arguing

that law-allibiding americans a often included and should not lose their constitutional right to purchase firearms. some republicans are pushing for a 72-hour hold on any gun purchases by someone on a watch list to give authorities time to revut sale and potentially block it. both parties have put forth amendments on background checks. democrats are looking to include gun shows and internet sales. in orlando thursday president obama weighed in. >> i truly hope that senators rise to the moment and do the right thing. >> reporter: but in the republican-controlled house no plans to take any action. >> is going after the second amendment how you stop terrorism? no. >> reporter: speaker ryan says the focus now should be on foreign policy and stopping homegrown radicals. diane, kendis? >> all right, karen, thank you. and bernie sanders is apparently poised to end his campaign. sanders delivered a live speech online vowing to work with hillary clinton to defeat donald trump. he said he personally intends to begin his role in that process

soon but he didn't formally concede or endorse clinton. sanders said his campaign has never been about a single candidate but about transforming america. more than 200,000 people tuned in for those remarks. in london now, tributes are pouring in for rising star of british politics who was brutally slain in broad daylight. member of parliament jo cox was meeting with constituents when she was shot and stabbed. a suspect was immediately taken into custody. police have no known motive right now for the attack. cox had reportedly faced a string of security threats. and it may be tied to next week's vote on britain's european union membership. former u.s. congresswoman gabby giffords, seen here, who survived an assassination attempt as well, says she is sickened by this attack. we have some breaking news from canada, where "bat out of hell" singer meat loef collapsed on stage. you see it here. the social media images showing the 68-year-old musician slowly going down and then people rushing to his aid.
