will lebron lift cleveland out of a championship drought or will steph curry prove he's the greatest on the court tonight? good evening. thanks for joining us on this sunday. i'm tom llamas. we begin with the dangerous heat. records now broken in the southwest. the heat is rolling across the country tonight from a coast to coast. and it's adding misery to the western wildfires. tonight, more than a dozen fires are burning in nine states. firefighters are battling the flames and the heat as well. the map showing the triple-different temperatures. take a look at that. that heat already taking several lives. we begin with abc's neal karlinsky in phoenix. >> reporter: tonight, the west is burning. a combination of excessive heat warnings and wildfires baking the region and threatening to shatter records in four states. >> the record is 115, expected to hit 118. >> reporter: overnight in arizona, 25-year-old anthony quatela died and his friend was hospitalized after

they ran out of water hiking this trail in the extreme heat. today in phoenix, we found this father and his kids trying to help others by donating water. >> just give back, you know. i don't know. something to do. it was hot. >> reporter: the homeless, the elderly and even pets, all being given special attention amidst warnings the heat can be a killer. cooling stations are now open. >> we don't have earthquakes, tornadoes or hurricanes but the heat is our disaster. >> reporter: with a heat measuring gun in hand, we surveyed the temperatures on the ground. 158 degrees. 171 on this slide. careful with the door handle. out in the sun, 146 degrees. many staying inside. >> when you're dehydrated, your head starts hurting, then you can't do anything. when you drink water, that prevents you from getting a headache which means you can play more.

>> reporter: airlines tonight delaying some flights coming in phoenix, because the 120 degrees, the air is so thin, it creates a threat to the planes. all is this as fires continue to burn across more than a half dozen states. even as containment goes up in the largest fires in arizona and california, the extreme heat leaving firefighters with an unpredictable and dangerous forecast. it's 116 degrees as i stand here right now. and it doesn't take long before you really start to feel it. the warning tonight, stay inside and stay hydrated. tom? >> the playground temps were unbelievable. neal, thanks so much. let either get right to abc's senior meteorologist rob marciano. >> really scary stuff. anything that is exposed is going to bake and sizzle. the temperatures, these are measured in the shade. that is how remarkable they are. 118 in phoenix. 107 in burbank. some of the numbers will climb through the evening. tomorrow's highs will be even warmer.

we could reach all time records in vegas, palm springs. 122 is expected in the coachella valley. we do have a severe weather threat tonight, includes minneapolis. and duluth, might see a tornado or two with the line of storms moving through. and continued heat across the central u.s., 99 is expected in st. louis. 90 in chicago. tomorrow is the first day of summer and the long race guidance is calling for continued heat in the areas getting it tonight. >> so hot of the west. rob, thanks so much. we learn more about the massacre in orlando. a troubling picture is growing clear and we learn tonight about his wife. one of her former teachers explains why she should is omar mateen's bride could not have been in on the plot. linzie janis tonight. >> reporter: tonight, seven days after omar mateen's massacre. >> possibly up to 15 still at the club barricaded in. >> reporter: authorities preparing to release partial transcripts of the killer's chilling phone calls with law enforcement. those negotiations taking place

during that three-hour standoff inside the pulse nightclub. also tonight, more details about the gunman's checkered past. an administrator at omar mateen's high school confirming to abc news mateen was suspended for celebrating the 9/11 terror attacks. one of mateen's former classmates witnessed his outburst. >> when they collapsed he stood up and was like "osama bin laden is my uncle. what the blank you gonna do about it?" >> reporter: also tonight, authorities still investigating whether mateen's wife noor salman, last seen the day after the attack, knew anything about her husband's plans. now, one of salman's former teachers telling abc news salman had learning difficulties. in an exclusive interview, susan, who asked us not to use her last name or show her face, saying she was in all special-education classes. >> noor had difficulty with retention. she had difficulty with conceptualizing. understanding.

i thought she is incapable of being an accomplice. absolutely incapable. >> reporter: salman's family confirming susan was noor's teacher and that noor was a special education student and does not understand "cause and effect." the family telling abc news "noor is completely innocent and was unaware of the attack." and tom, those partial transcripts of mateen's communications with police will be released monday. authorities saw they want the public to know what type of interactions were had that night. tom? >> thank you. one final memorial after a weekend of remembrances. in downtown orlando, people stopped by a walkway lined with crosses. one for each victim. the staggering number when you take a look. 49 people killed. seen in this image, one of ever one of their faces. abc's eva pilgrim with the tributes. >> reporter: tonight, a message of love repeatedly made under a symbol of hope. ♪ all you need is love

soccer fans dressed in rainbow gear saturday night, showing the world "love will keep orlando united!" balloons above empty chairs marking each of the victims. >> you can't escape the pride. >> reporter: gay pride events from coast to coast taking place throughout the country, even amidst increased security. parade marchers in new orleans with signs, "we are pulse" and in new york city, "homophobia kills." in the heartland, "equality" and in sacramento, california, the "pulse of love." overnight, exactly one week later. bells ringing out at 2:02, marking the moment that the shooting began. as this city continues to heal, many finding peace in the flags waving, the posters, and even in the sky. >> that's what our hope is. that we claim that promise that god loves us. that god will never separate from us. and we have to do the same thing with each other. >> reporter: and tonight, 30,000 people are expected to come

together again here at this amphitheater for a vigil. tom? >> evan, thank you. let's turn to politics now and the race for the white house. donald trump blazing his own path through the gun debate, saying more people should be armed and also this no one on a terror watch list should be. and trump is still at odds with some in his own party, now just a month before the convention. here's abc's mary bruce. >> reporter: tonight donald trump is veering from his party on how to prevent future terror attacks. >> we have to make sure that people that are terrorists or have even an inclination toward terrorism cannot buy weapons, guns. >> reporter: a position he's now discussing with the nra. >> if you're on that terror watch list, if you're on that no fly list, you should not be able to buy a gun? >> i'd like to see that and i'd like to say it, it's simpler. it's just simpler. >> reporter: trump also says if more people had been armed in that club, more lives might have been saved. >> and one of the people in that room happened to have it and

former vanderbilt football player brandon vandenberg was found guilty on all eight counts. including aggravated rape and sexual battery. prosecutors say he encouraged three team members to assault an unconscious woman he had been dating, videotaping it off. he faces 15 to 25 years at sentencing. next to a neighbor who reached out to authorities because she thought something happening at a house in her neighborhood just wasn't right. at the scene, police found a troubling scene. a dozen girls under 21 years old living with a 50-year-old man. and he allegedly fathered two of the girls. here is the report tonight. >> reporter: on this quiet street in bucks county, pennsylvania, jen betz said she knew "something wasn't right" at the home of 51-year-old lee kaplan. >> i knew it. so that's what i'm going through. i saw these little girls, their face. i saw them often enough. that i knew that they were crying for help.

>> reporter: calling a child abuse hotline to report her suspicions about the home, where she saw several girls, all in blue dresses. police scouring the property, where they say 12 girls ranging from 6 months to 18 years old lived with kaplan. the 18-year-old, authorities say, telling police kaplan fathered her two children. he now faces charges including statutory sexual assault. her parents, who arranged for the then-14 year old girl to live with kaplan, charged with endangering the welfare of a child. they claim the other nine girls found in the home are also their daughters. jen betz says she called the child abuse line once before a few years ago. >> i've been looking at them for years, watching, going by that house and i feel like i could have done more. >> reporter: her neighbors, thankful tonight she picked up the phone again. >> jen is basically a hero. jen took it upon herself to take the initiative and make the call. >> they are away from a potential serious predator. at the end of the day they are

nowhere near him. >> reporter: tonight, law enforcement telling us they received several calling on the property. they are now in custody of the coun county, tom? now we turn to overseas and the a developing story out of egypt air 804. the voice data recorder is being tested to download its memory. french experts have now joined the effort. the flight disappeared one month ago today. to japan and a massive protest on the island of okinawa. 10,000 people rallies on the u.s. base there. it comes after an american contractor on the base was arrested for the killing of a japanese woman. last month, the prime minister publicly chastised the president obama for that incident. to the showdown in oakland that basketball fans have been waiting for.

our index now, starting the death of a rising star killed in a freak car accident. anton yelchin, known for his roles as chekov in the remake of the "star trek" films was found dead in his driveway in los angeles. police say he was hit by his own car after it rolled down an incline pinning him against a fence. his latest film, star trek beyond, will be out in july. he was just 27 years old. an update tonight on the dangerous rescue mission at the south pole. two planes on their way to an american research center have arrived in chile. from there, they will attempt a risky flight to antarctica to save a worker who needs medical attention. they will go to temperatures 70 degrees below zero. they will have to decide mid flight if they have enough fuel to make it back before passing the point of no return. and tonight, our first look at the newest addition to the clinton family.
