it is monday night. monica is off. sharrie williams is joining us and the big story on "action news" is the latest on the investigation into the worst mass shooting in u.s. history. >> abc's adrienne banker is live in new york with the details. adrienneism rick and sharrie, good evening to you. we are learning more about the entire case as well as what the gunman said to a 911 dispatcher while holding a number of victims hostage and hearing from police who stand by their tactics in saving lives. we now have a better idea of the time line in the orlando nightclub massacre that killed 49 people. radio transcripts showing officers inside the club within minutes forcing the shooter omar mateen to retreat into a bathroom with hostages. at 2:35 a.m., 30 minutes after the first shots, omar mateen calls 911 calling himself an islamic soldier, then hanging up. over the next hour, calls from negotiators as the killer claims there is a vehicle

outside that has some bombs. you people are going get it and i'm going to ignite it if they try to do anything stupid. no explosives are ever found. at 4:21 a.m., police pull an air conditioning unit evacuating a group of survivors. the chief of police stressing there was no gunfire in the three hours it took for s.w.a.t. teams to take mateen down. >> i think there was this misconception that we didn't do anything for three hours and i'm just trying to clarify that's absolutely not true. we have been training for this situation for many, many years since columbine, since 9/11. >> reporter: factors that add to an already complex investigation, abc news learning days before the standoff mateen spent $9,000 on jewelry, two months earlier he signed over his interest in this florida home he owned with this father for just $100. and the fbi initially releasing portions of that 911 call in written form omitting

any reference to radical islam. they later corrected course after get something criticism not wanting to distract people from the case and giving thus full written transcript. they will not release the audio recordings out of respect for the victims and their families. in new york, adrienne bankert. rick back to you. >> adrienne thank you. gun control is taking center stage in congress today. both democrats and republicans in the senate have introduced their ideas on how to best keep weapons out of the hands of potential terrorists but the bills on the floor have more differences than similarities and a compromise seems to be far off. voting is set to begin in less than half an hour from in you. much more over the fight over gun control tonight at 5:30. >> to a shakeup in the race for the white house. with less than five months to go until election day presumptive republican nominee donald trump has fired his campaign manager. corey lewandowski had been

with the trump campaign since the beginning. sources with the campaign say he often clashed with advisers encouraging trump to be himself rather than tone down his rhetoric. lewandowski was the source of controversy when he was charged with misdemeanor battery in march after an altercation with a female reporter at a trump rally. the charges were later dropped. today lewandowski said he is still supporting trump in november and is happy to help in any way he can. >> i had a nice conversation with mr. trump and i said to him it's been an honor and privilege to be part of this. i'm so thankful for this chance and i know that what i will do moving forward is share my advice of what i know with mr. trump and his team if they want it. >> well, just hours after that shift in the trump campaign, a new poll was released showing his rival, presumptive democratic nominee hillary clinton in the lead. the numbers from monmouth university show clinton up seven points among registered

voters and this is the third national poll in a row showing clinton leading the race. >> and turning to accuweather tonight, well, today marks the official start of summer and it sure felt like it outside. looking live from sky6 hd showing you atlantic city. look at all the folks on the beach there. lots of sun helped heat up the delaware valley and the jersey shore. temperatures topped out in the 90's. meteorologist cecily tynan tracking the chance of showers and storms. she's outside with a first look at the forecast. hey, cecily. >> hi, rick and looks like we could be going from steamy today to stormy tomorrow. today definitely feels like summer, 91 degrees the high so far in philadelphia. just 1 degree below the hottest day of the year so far that was 92 back on june 11th. and this is really appropriate since, yes, summer officially begins this evening. the summer solstice. the time that the sun's direct rays are over the tropic of cancer, that's the highest north they get all year and that marks the official beginning of summer. and it's going to be a very

warm night. temperatures through the overnight hours just dropping down into the 70's and then early tomorrow morning, i am tracking the chance of some thunderstorms rolling in. satellite6 along with action radar showing what i'm tracking, if you look over across the midwest, you can see that line of storms with a severe thunderstorm watch north of cincinnati. that's the front that will be pushing in tomorrow and this could bring us a couple opportunities for storms. i'll talk more about when, where and how much coming up in the full accuweather forecast. sharrie. >> cecily see you when you come. in meantime authorities in bucks county say they plan to interview the children found inside the home of a man facing sexual assault charges. the action cam was outside that home in feasterville today where public works crews were boarding up the side of the house. 12 girls were found inside that home thursday after a tip call to police. according to police, one of the youngsters who is now 18 is the mother of two of the others. the owner of the home, lee

kaplan, and the 18-year-old's parents, daniel and savilla stoltzfus are all facing charges related to the case. >> police in chester county still have yet to name a suspect or a motive after a 62-year-old woman was found beaten to death inside her own home. "action news" reporter katherine scott is live outside of tredyffrin township police tonight with the latest on the investigation. katherine. >> reporter: rick, tredyffrin township police and detectives continues to investigate this one a woman found beaten to death inside her home. so far authorities haven't said if they've identified any suspects. today unread newspapers still sit in the drive way of this berwyn home days after a woman was found murdered. investigators say friday morning around 8:30 a relative called police after discovering 62-year-old denise barger dead inside her home on the 900 block of heather stone drive.

authorities say they died of blunt force trauma. law enforcement taped off the home as they searched the property for evidence. barger's husband died in march and public records show the widow recently sold her home but hadn't moved out yet. now tredyffrin township police and chester county detectives are trying to determine what happened to her and why. and we did speak to several neighbors off camera today. they are stunned that this happened in their quiet community and they are hoping that authorities can can get to the bottom of this very soon. we're live in berwyn, katherine scott, channel6 "action news." sharrie. >> all right, katherine, thank you. now new at 5:00, a man and woman are facing burglary charges after they allegedly tried to break into a home in new castle county. police say koran angle and monet lewis were trying to get into an apartment saturday morning. investigators say the two led police on a briefcase after they found them hiding in the parking lot. police say they found evidence linking the two to the

burglary. well, philadelphia's controversial beverage tax is now officially a city law. [cheers and applause] philadelphia mayor jim kenney signed the bill this morning at city hall. council members approved the tax last week which amounts to a one and a half cent per ounce levy on drinks with added sweeteners. most of the revenue will be spent on city programs, namely, education. the beverage industry fiercely fought the bill and has promised to file a challenge in court. >> from our new jersey bureau tonight, the garden state is getting a new chief technology officer and cyber security adviser in trenton today governor cyst cys -- cyst cyst named dave weinstein to the office. he'll serve as a cabinet member. christie talked about the importance of cyber security saying he had been the victim

>> health check tonight. local pharmaceutical company is set to start testing a potential vaccine against the zika virus. >> health reporter and registered nurse ali gorman joins us at the big board with all the details tonight. ali. >> reporter: hey, guys. inova pharmaceuticals is in plymouth metering. they'll start enrolling 40 healthy adults to test the zika vaccine. they're looking to make sure it is safe and that it also has the potential to work. i visited the company when they were working on an ebola vaccine. they say their vaccine for zika aims to prime the immune system to recognize and attack the zika virus. in animal tests it has shown an immune response. several other companies are also racing to develop a zika vaccine. it has been linked to birth defects and a paris. new treatment to help people battling with opioid

addict. some in our area are the first to receive it. it's specifically for people in long term recovery programs. >> you all set. >> all set. >> reporter: indicat katie bulls game has fought addiction for a long time. despite her success, it's still a battle and she relies on medication to fight cravings. she had been taking pills daily but now she's trying a long term option, called probufin. dr. mike cal frost says tiny rods are inserted under the arm. they deliver the drugs for six months. >> the medication comes out at a steady rate. >> reporter:. the rods are placed using a local anesthetic and a tithe incision. >> in six months time we will remove it. >> reporter: and another set will go in her other arm. indicate see says she got hooked on painkillers and then heroin. the highs soon became miserable lows. >> trying to get money selling things for money, so stealing

as we head through the overnight hours and that will bring us an opportunity for some showers and thunderstorms early tomorrow morning. so, tonight it gets more humid. some of those late thunderstorms in the wee hours of the morning, 72 degrees in philadelphia, so a warm night for the first night of summer. allentown 68. wilmington 70 and the boardwalk in atlantic city 69 degrees. not only is this a summer solstice, it's also a full moon known as a strawberry moon in june and this is the first time we've had the summer solstice and the full moon on the same day since 1948. so, once the sun sets, we'll have plenty of moonlight to enjoy the evening. future tracker showing as we head into tomorrow morning, this is when we likely will see some scattered showers and thunderstorms developing along i-95 very early around 6:00 and this whole complex will shift across south jersey and delaware later in the afternoon around 5 o'clock and this is when we could have our second round of some showers and thunderstorms.

so, this is really the area of concern. south jersey and delaware tomorrow afternoon, i don't think everyone will get the strong to severe storms but those who do could be dealing with some damaging wind and even some hail. so, the five day at 5:00 showing tomorrow it's going to be humid. not as hot as do with a high of 88 degrees. some thunderstorms in the morning around philadelphia. more in the afternoon in delaware and south jersey. behind this system on wednesday, it's breezy and warm, 88 degrees, mostly sunny skies and thursday we have a good chance of some widespread rain, perhaps even some gusty thunderstorms. we'll need the umbrellas on thursday, a high of 80 and heading into next weekend, good timing. we're clearing things out on friday, 84 degrees and saturday warming up to 88 and adam will let you know if that warmup continues through sunday coming up in the full accuweather 7-day forecast guys. >> thank you. more "action news" is coming up in just a moment.

aimed at keeping americans safe in the wake of several mass shootings including the orlando nightclub massacre. big time heroin distribution ring is out of business in philadelphia. and a special honor for a local couple who spent several decades of dedicated service with the delaware fire department. we will show you. >> ♪ >> now to the developing news from capitol hill. you are taking a live look now at the floor of the u.s. senate where lawmakers are wrapping up debates and will start voting on new pieces of legislation aimed at overhauling guns and gun ownership in america. >> congress has been under increasing pressure to take a firm stance against military style weapons ending up in the hands of some civilians. >> the tipping point came over a week ago when a man walked into an orlando nightclub and killed 49 people. >> that's right. here is a quick look at the four bills on the table. one nra backed bill would increase the resources available to prosecutors for violators of gun laws. another would close the

so-called gun show loophole by requiring background checks on gun purchasers at gun shows and over the internet. >> the third would block the sale of guns to people on the terror watch list for 72 hours while the government assesses whether that person is actually a terror threat. the last bill goes even further than that. barring anyone on a terror watch list from buying a gun. >> let's go now to abc's lana zak live on capitol hill tonight with more. >> lana, good evening. >> reporter: good evening, rick and sharrie and i spoke with legislators both republican and democratic senators today. none of them seem that able to make the kind of compromises that would ensure that any of those four pieces of legislation would actually pass. in washington today, continued outrage that the shooter in orlando was able to legally buy the weapons used in the worst mass shooting in u.s. history despite being watched by the fbi. the white house trying to

bring together bipartisan support for reform. >> majority of democrats who support closing that background check loophole. there's able evidence to indicate that a majority of republicans and a majority of gun owners share the same view. >> reporter: but republicans and democrats are split on how best to respond. democrats supporting legislation dubbed no fly, no buy. that would stop anyone on the no-fly list from purchasing a gun. it would lower the standard from refusal to probable cause to reasonable belief. but republicans are against a ban advocating a three day wait period instead. that they say will allow for a period to clarify if the person is really a danger. meanwhile a victory of sorts for gun control advocates coming from the supreme court. today deciding not to take up the assault weapons ban. this action by the court leaves in place gun control legislation passed in the wake of the sandy hook elementary shooting. >> of course it's personal its my home state and, you know, it stems out of my mother's murder. regardless of the outcome tonight the issue is on the

forefront of everybody's mind and that in itself is a victory. >> reporter: and erica, her mother being the hero principal of sandy hook elementary also told me that she's noticing a change in the environment she says she believes that even if the votes don't pass today that she's confident that it will happen at some point. reporting live from capitol hill, lana zak, channel6 "action news." back to you, rick. >> lana, thank you for that report. a connecticut judge heard arguments today on whether to dismiss a lawsuit filed by families of victims of the sandy hook massacre. they are suing the manufacturer of the gun used by adam lanza to kill six adults and 20 children in newtown back in 2012. remmington arms is the maker of the bush master ar-15 similar to the ar-15 used by omar mateen the orlando nightclub shooter. the company's argues the lawsuit should be dismissed on several technical grounds including a federal law that protects gun makers from liability. >> how many more newtowns, how

many more san bernadinos, how many more auroras and how many more orlandos and probably in six months we can add another name to the list until the remmingtons of the world say you know what, it just isn't worth it any. >> as we said, today the supreme court refused to hear a challenge to assault weapon bans passed in connecticut and new york. that means the law prohibiting semi automatic weapons and large comas is the magazines will be upheld for now. world news tonight with david muir will have much more on the gun debate on capitol hill and connecticut. you can watch that tonight at 6:30 following "action news" at 6:00. >> in other news this monday, authorities in gloucester county have identified a man found murdered inside his home. but it's still not clear who targeted him or why. the victim's name is john gardener and he's 24 years old. detectives found him with a gunshot wound inside of a home along the 1300 block of pine street in paulsboro just before midnight.

medics rushed him to the hospital where he died a short time later. philadelphia detectives are looking into a suspicious car fire in south philadelphia overnight. this happened near the intersection of mifflin and hicks street. witnesses told officers they heard an explosion and then saw people run from the scene right before the car burst into flames. no one was hurt. police are also on the lookout for a man who held up a 7-eleven in olney. this happened last week at the location along the 100 block of east champlost avenue. the suspect pointed a gun at an employee and demanded money. well, the worker filled a bag with cash and handed it over and the thief took off. >> more arrests expected after police uncovered a heroin distribution operation in philadelphia. pleasure rivered santos alvarez ruiz and felipe fontanez burgos earlier this month after narcotics agents put them under surveillance

and today attorney general kathleen kane showed off some of the drugs and money that were confiscated. police say they seized 250 grams of heroin that was worth $85,000. >> when you cut that down into, say, a typical heroin user may use about 10 bags a day, now we're looking at 360 either individuals or 360 days that one person is continuing to use this heroin. if they make it that long. >> kane also said that the state has a new focus on arresting people that sell heroin at the street level, no the just the suppliers. surveillance cameras captured a thief red handed late friday night in port richmond. this is along the 2700 block of east somerset street. detectives say the suspect broke into a garage through a side door and stole a bike, several hand tools including power drills, a lie powered air pump and then took off. if you recognize him, philadelphia police would like to hear from you. >> the arrival of a statue in new castle county, delaware,

was bittersweet for a 90-year-old man. joe's family paid $50,000 for the statue now going up outside of the talleyville fire company. joe had serve there had for 70 years. the bronze statue honors the company's fallen firefighters and his late wife gladys. she dedicated 30 years to the ladies oks sill area at talleyville. the statue traveled to two continents before making its way home. >> this statue was sent to milan, italy. it took 100 days to make this bronze statue. >> the statue stands 4-foot 11. the exact light of joe's late wife. >> well, the headliners were announced today for this year's made in america music festival in philadelphia. and rihanna will be among the stars taking the stage by the art museum. the band coldplay is another huge draw on the ticket. made in america is labor day weekend september 3rd and 4th.

then another in the backlog so speeds there in the 20's coming down from woodhaven. especially in you're headed northbound stick to the roosevelt boulevard, stick to the local streets, even go into new jersey and use 130 northbound but if you're doing that, you probably don't want to use the ben franklin bridge. still police activity here jersey bound in the right lane so it's jammed leaded toward the garden state. and on 295 in burlington county, big backups because of a jackknifed tractor-trailer here. you start to hit the brakes south of 195 on down to approaching florence columbus where lanes are blocked and farther south on 295 in delaware there's a crash just off the delaware memorial bridge. so, it's jammed there as well, rick and sharrie, back over to you. >> okay. thanks again, matt. >> matt, do you know that rihanna song? >> i do, yes. >> i figured you do. >> work, work, work. >> of course line. >> okay. >> apparently rick knows it, too. matt, thanks. >> only know three words. >> it is a day they have dreamed about for years. the 2016 class of parkway west high school in philadelphia

>> we are hearing a 911 call about that two-year-old boy killed by an alligator near disney's magi magic kingdom. >> 911 what's your location. what's your emergency. >> somebody in the lake. >> lane gravers drowned in the

lake after being snatched by the gator at disney's grand floridian resort. his father could not pull him away. the beach had posted no swimming signs. alligator warning signs are now being added. disney our parent company is can considering whether to reopen the beaches. they were immediately shut down as a precaution. a gust of wind sent a bounce house flying from a birthday party in niagara new york. a parent at the party grand her cell phone and started recording it. it swirled in the air and finally crashed into a power line and touched off a spark. thankfully no children were inside that bounce house at the time. >> ducis rodgers here now talking sports and phillies in a bit of a slump. >> a bit? it's been like about five or six weeks since they've not been in a slump. they're not a very good baseball team right now. manager pete mackanin says his phillies are snake bitten. perhaps the pun was intended considering they've been getting eaten alive by the diamondbacks this afternoon, another downer. no hot teams just hot weather at the park these days.

quickly into the lower 80's. we have that full strawberry moon turning humid as well. again pop-up late thunderstorms or showers coming in from the north and west in the predawn hours, four, five, 6:00 a.m. through philadelphia with temperatures right around that 70-degree mark so as we track them on future tracker at 6:00 a.m. tomorrow morning it will be a broken line of some of these downpours or thunderstorms as a cold front approaches from the north and west and this front is going to stall in southern areas during the afternoon tomorrow. so, while philadelphia, lehigh valley, poconos it is a sunny afternoon, southern areas of new jersey, the beaches in delaware and the shore communities and new jersey watch for scattered thunderstorms to pop in the afternoon and some of them could contain some strong winds or even some small hail. down the shore tomorrow it is partly sunny, scattered afternoon storms, a moderate risk for rip currents with temperature in the 80's with a southerly wind and that sea breeze kicking in in the afternoon. as you head into cape may county low 80's for highs. the beaches in delaware not much of a sea breeze there

because of the wind can coming in out of the southwesterly direction with the ocean temperature of 71. then behind the front on wednesday high pressure comes in. we drop the humidity. it is still very warm, above average of 88 degrees but we're not going to hit the low 90's as we go through the rest of the week and the winds will be whipping out of the west on wednesday between about 12 and 20 miles an hour. the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast, a pair of 88's for the next couple of days. watch for some scattered storms tomorrow especially southern new jersey and delaware in the afternoon. it's dry, warm breezy wednesday 88. rain with some gusty thunderstorms on thursday as a more compact system passes through for most of us at 80 degrees and then that heads off the coast and a northerly wind takes over friday. it's beautiful. average of 84. and then the weekend right now looking really nice, above average, upper 80's, just a few clouds both days and then a little bit more unsettled as we led into monda head into mona temperature of 86 degrees.

county. but the big story on "action news" tonight is the era of the beverage tax in philadelphia. it has begun. mayor jim kenney put pen to paper in city hall signing the controversial bill into law. the one and a half per -- one and a half cent per ounce tax on sugary and diet drinks is scheduled to take effect january 1st. it will raise more than $90 million a year most of which will go to pre-k programs and restoring community and rec centers but there is still the question of implementation and collection of this tax. "action news" reporter john rawlins is live at a beverage distributor in yeadon. john, how will this work and what are the potential snags? >> reporter: well, jim, the city says it's pretty straight forward. this is not a retail tax. it is a wholesale tax and it would be collected at the wholesale level. wholesalers will have to sign up by december and collect the tax when it's started to happen in january. but one bottler who has been
