longest day of light of the year. the summer solstice signaling the first night of summer. and cecily tynan enjoying the summer night with late word from accuweather. cecily? >> and jim, it is officially summer, but it actually felt like summer for the past two days. yesterday and today, both days, we reached a high of 91 degrees. that's seven degrees above normal. and tonight, not only is it warm, it's getting more muggy. philadelphia, 79 degrees. it's still 80 in trenton. cape may, 72. reading, 78. and wilmington, 77 degrees. so a very warm night. and stormtracker 6 live double scan showing that we've got a ribbon of thunderstorms stretching from western new york state into the ohio valley and that system will be moving in as we head through the overnight hours. and it will be stalling across part of the region tomorrow. so that's going to bring us some

unsettled weather. so the morning rush, it will be warm. it will be muggy at 6:00. 74 by 8:00. 77, and we will have some scattered thunderstorms early and then heading into the afternoon, i'm tracking another round of thunderstorms. i'll talk more about that, where to expect them and what to expect with them coming up in the full accuweather forecast. jim? >> thank you. the morning team will have the latest on the overnight round of rain and any impact it might have on the morning commute. and that begins at 4:30. philadelphia police have arrested a suspect in the discovery last week of a handcuffed woman's body near the mann music center. "action news" reporter dann cuellar is live at police headquarters tonight. dann? >> reporter: jim arrested is 39-year-old shavon armstrong of wilkes-barre, pennsylvania. another woman being called a person of interest also questioned in the very gruesome and and torture and murder. this is 26-year-old toy charda bryant.

her body was found dumped near the mann center. police say the victim was handcuffed and apparently had been tortured at first with a series of stab wounds and a cloth stuffed in her mouth. she was also beaten and ultimately shot in the back of the head. >> she does have defensive wounds on her hands, so it appears she was in a fight and trying to defend off her attacker but obviously was unsuccessful. >> reporter: police say it appears bryant owed her assailants $800 and could not pay up. it seems she ultimately paid with her life, but police do not believe she was murdered where she was found. >> right now we believe she was dumped there. we believe this murder happened somewhere else and she was dumped at this location.. >> reporter: ironically police say the three women were friends. the two women being held in the murder and being charged with murder, criminal conspiracy, kidnapping, robbery and related offenses. we're live at police headquarters, dime dann cuellar, thank you, dann.ws."

today the police released a 911 transcript omar mateen made during the nightclu nightclub s. during the call, mateen told the operator "i'm in orlando. i did the shootings." he also pledged allegiance to abu bakr al-baghdadi, the leader of the islamic state. >> the killer made these murderous statements. he did so in a chilling, calm, and deliberate manner. >> the transcript released today also included details from three phone calls with the orlando police department's crisis negotiation team. in those calls, mateen threatened to put suicide vests on four victims and to blow up a vehicle filled with bombs. no explosives were ever found. officials in atlantic city held a wreath ceremony today and a prayer vigil on the beach to one of the victims of the orlando nightclub shooting.

the tribute began with the reading of the names of each of the 49s. they tossed a flower-colored wreath into the motion in memory of. as expected, the senate of the united states failed to agree on gun control measures today, four of which came up for votes. republicans defeated bills proposed by democrats, and democrats defeated bills proposed by republicans. many americans will be left shaking their heads over the fact that eight days after the worst mass shooting in american history, lawmakers could not agree on the idea of restricting firearms for terrorists. this was senator bill nelson of florida. >> what aim going to tell 49 grieving families? what am i going to tell the families of those that are still in the hospital fighting for their lives? sadly, what i'm going to have to tell them is the nra won again.

>> neither could the senate agree on enhancing the government's existing system of background checks. meanwhile, the pennsylvania supreme court today dealt a critical blow to gun rights advocates and a victory to the city of philadelphia. the justices unanimously ruled against a state law that would have made it easier for the nra to challenge gun control measures enacted by cities. it was passed in 2014 and signed by republican governor tom corbett. the city of philadelphia and others sued mayor jim kenney said the law's intent was to "intimidate municipalities through what he called fear of financially crippling litigation." bucks county authorities today began interviewing some of the dozen girls discovered at a feaster wim home last week. their now 18-year-old sister was allegedly given away about her lancaster county parents to 51-year-old lee kaplan to pay

him back for a debt. she was 14 at the time and police say she has given birth to two of kaplan's children. kaplan is charged with statutory sexual assault. now investigators want to know if there was any criminal conduct toward the other girls and what their lives were like under kaplan's roof. the girls will live in foster care in lancaster county. go almost anywhere in the world and you might find someone who knows that geno's means philadelphia. but earlier this month, geno's was also the backdrop for an ugly outbreak of violence. tonight, police are still searching for the culprits. "action news" reporter christie ileto is live at the iconic eatery on south 9th street. and christie, you've got the full story. >> reporter: that's right, jim. patrick kane say he and his wife were eating at geno's after a wedding, and one of their friends went up to a group of guys asking if she could have a cigarette. well, that apparently triggered

the brawl. >> like, i got punched in the nose, and i got punched in the back of the head. and when i was bent over, i got two upper cuts to the face. >> reporter: that's what patrick keen said happened when he stepped in front of his and i've another girl who asked this group of guys on surveillance footage outside geno's steaks. >> right here. >> it was this guy right here. >> reporter: he said the man wearing the backwards baseball cap became aggressive. >> he snapped and started yelling, "we belong to isis." he shoved one girl, hit my wife, and then the other guy and i tried to jump in. then all of a sudden, it was -- what started as one guy became five. there were five guys that just started attacking everybody. >> reporter: police said the suspects fled in a dark colored vehicle with new jersey plates. geno's steaks say they don't condone this type of violence telling "action news" physical disputes are not acceptable anywhere and shouldn't go without punishment. but this isn't the first attack outside the popular philadelphia staple. in 2012, one person was arrested

leaving $22,000 in damage behind. the philadelphia beverage tax bill has been signed, and barring court action, it will become the law on january 1st. "action news" was there as mayor kenney signed the bill this morning at city hall. the law means the city will tax beverage distributors 1 1/2 cents for 3 ounces of sugary and diet drinks, a tax that presumably will be passed down to the consumers. the city expects to raise $90 million a year for pre-k programs and renovations at playgrounds and rec centers. remember last year's budget standoff in pennsylvania that lasted a record nine months? well, the state could be in for a repeat performance. thank you very much. the clock is ticking as the statehouse returned to session today. but with the fiscal year starting july 1st, ten days from now, there is no budget vote scheduled. lawmakers may consider expanding gambling and raising cigarette

a deadly heat wave out west is fueling wildfires. crews are working to get wild firefighters under control in nine states. this blaze in california has charred nearly 8,000 acres since it started last wednesday. in arizona, there have been four heat-related deaths with

temperatures topping 120. the heat also called some flight cancellations. pilots are reporting that the overheated air is so thin that it created lift problems. they simply could not take off. it was a trump campaign bombshell this morning. trump fired campaign manager cory lewandowski. trump said tonight, i think it is time now for a different kind of campaign. what that means remains to be seen. lewandowski was the architect of the "let trump be trump" camp in a fierce rivalry with paul manfort. but trump's adult children led by ivanka, convinced their dad the campaign needs to be made more professional. this was the scene saturday as 20-year-old michael sanford was removed from a trump rally in las vegas. authorities say sanford tried to take a police officers gun to kill donald trump. at a hearing today, a judge said sanford is a potential danger to the community and a flight risk

and he is now being held without bail. meanwhile, hillary clinton was off the campaign trail today, so she could attend to some joyful family business. she and her husband accompanied chelsea and chelsea's husband as they left the hospital with their newborn son in new york city. aidan clinton entered the world saturday morning. he is their second child. charlotte was born in september 2014. federal investigators tonight began looking into yesterday's sudden and shocking death of actor anton yell chin. the 27-year-old was in the star trek move he he was pinned by his s.u.v. in a freak accident that may be due to a design flaw in the vehicle and that flaw may be present in a million other cars. it has to do with the shifter. for decades, automatics have used the same basic design. but yelchin's 2015 jeek grand

"healthcheck" tonight, a new study says that roughly half of pediatric concussions may go untreated. researchers at the university of washington couldn't pinpoint why so many head injuries go unreported to emergency rooms to private insurance and high school athletic trainers. but they do believe that between 1 and 2 million children and teens suffer sports or recreation-related concussions each year. the study's authors argue for an oversight system to determine if this lack of treatment puts the health of these children at risk. researchers at temple university claim to have invented a hel thinkier -- healthier tastier chocolate. you're going to start paying attention to this. >> i am. >> i know you are. the groundbreaking research published today involves zapping the chocolate with an electric field while it is still in liquid form.

isolated shower. but that front will be stalling. at this point, it looks like it will be stalling across southern new jersey go delaware so as we get through the heating of the day, we will see some more showers and thunderstorms firing up late in the afternoon and these could extend into the evening. again, mainly south and east of the i-95 corridor. so i don't think everyone will see these storms but those who do across south jersey and delaware, there is a possibility they could come with some damaging winds and even the threat of some small hail. so if you are down the shore, definitely want to keep your eye to the sky, maybe download your stormtracker 6 app. most of the day will be storm free-partly sunny, a moderate risk of rip current so do be careful with winds out of the south. temperatures in the low 80s across the new jersey beaches and mid-80s in the delaware beaches. so the exclusive accuweather seven-day forecast, your first full day of summer, it's going to be a little bit unsettled. warm with scattered thunderstorms, again early in the pennsylvania, later in the

tonight to help launch a new prison initiative -- the vera institute of justice's reimagining prison initiative aims to keep people from returning to prison with the goal of reducing prison populations. coping with alzheimer's disease was the topic of discussion tonight in the spring garden section of philadelphia. author bea smith and her husband, dan gasby, shared their story of love and commitment in the face of her alzheimer's diagnosis. the meeting tonight at the philadelphia school district auditorium. the couple also shared advice for other couples todaying the -- facing the same situation. ♪
