warn that got everybody's attention today in cape may county, there was no twister but high winded did their damage at various locations, like here on third avenue near ocean drive in stone harbor, a tree came down and a housestained some serious damage. cape may county suffers 37,000 outages, and avalon took a lot of water in a short period of time today. it was slow moving late this afternoon. cecily tynan and christie aleto are covering all the angles to this story. lets begin with you cecily. we have tornado warnings and hundreds of lightning strikes kind of a scary afternoon in south jersey. >> but our weather has settled down, the squall line of thunderstorms and damaging winds and the tornado warning has pushed off the coast, there is some isolate the thunderstorm activity cropping up.

this is chester county over downingtown crossing 322, one lightning strike this is not severe but has heavy downpours near exton and malvern but double scan live radar showing this is what was happening this afternoon. at 3:40 this is when the national weather service issued the tornado warninging we were indicating a bit of a hook echo and we were picking up the rotating winds higher in the atmosphere when you see those cylinders showing red that is when you have the rotating winds from higher in the atmosphere to the surface that say low level lock and that pushed to the east and we had a lot of wind damage. that was really the main concern with the storms. barnegat township reporting dollar size hail and a tree fell on a house in whitesboro.

and a vicious line of storms. this was sent to me from phyllis in north wildwood. this large tree, and the whole tree root was toppled over by the wins and unfortunately i'm tracking the threat of more severe weather later this week. i'll talk about that in the exclusive accuweather seven-day forecast. christie is live in tonight harbor, what is the latest there? >> reporter: well, a lot of what we saw driving down here was flooded streets and downed trees but this is the worst damage we have seen. this is a home under construction, just to give you an idea of how powerful the winds were there was a second and third story, it caved and the debris fell to a neighbor's home and a pool in the backyard. >> the "action news" viewer

caught the wild whipping winds that came through north wildwood this afternoon. the powerful storm left a powerful damage in its wake and watched this home under construction cave to the brutal winds. >> we saw everything blowing down the street and then pieces of that come off. one at a time. one at a time. and then the whole thing collapsed and there is a pool over there that it landed in. there is a lot of that stuff inthis house's pool. and these guys were here three hours or two hours ago and the whole thing they put up the last two days blew down. >> reporter: no word yet on how much damage this will do have the but jim it seems that this two block radius really bore the brunt of this mid-day storm. we even saw a couple of blocks away from here there was a trampoline wrapped around a

utility pole. >> christie thank you. other news at this hour. the verdict was guilty many times over today. in the trial of congressman, chaka fattah, and three others. fattah emerged from federal court after having been convicted of a litany of corruption charges including money laundering and bank fraud and more. the question now what did chaka fattah do with the rest his term. the law does not require him to step down from his house term prior to sentencing. vernon lets start with you at federal court. >> reporter: today federal prosecutors got what they most wanted. multiple corruption convictions against congressman, chaka fattah, they got him on every count they pursued during his five week trial. >> a tough day but we are going

to confer with my lawyers and pick out what my next steps are. and that was all that the lawyers would permit fattah to say moments after he was convicted on 20 counts of racketeering and mail and bank fraud and money laundering, the jury of three men and nine women including three african-americans were deliberating since thursday. also, convicted today fattah friend brand age 70 caught up in the money laundering scheme and herb vetterman, they called him fattah's atm, they believed he was funneling money to fattah for the once power congressman's lobbying for an ambassadorship. >> my brother always helped a friend and wanted nothing in

return. >> this is unfair and overaggressive government and overaggressive prosecution, they are going after innocent americans and putting them in jail. >> it was no secret that the fbi and federal prosecutors pursued the 11 term congressman for years, fattah could be facing a long stretch in prison, the racketeering conviction alone carries 20 years behind bars. >> there is a complicated guideline formula that needs to be implements before we can determine what the appropriate sentence in this case. >> reporter: jim fattah's sentence date is set for october 4th, an appeal by his lawyers is being planned and well underway. live at the courthouse in center city, i'm vernon odom, channel 6 "action news." >> thank you. lets go live to north 54th street in winfield near the fattah district office and reporter walter perez.

you are getting reaction to the verdict today, what have you heard? >> reporter: that is right. we spoke with some of fattah constit whens and colleagues, some say while expected it's sad and disappointing. >> it's a major shame. >> that is congressman brady's reaction after chaka fattah was found guilty on all counts against him on the racketeering trial. brady says this is a sad conclusion to a prolific career in public service. >> he did a lot of good for the city and region and the whole united states. he was the appropriatations subcommittee chairman. >> and we spoke with jim kenney in washington attending an event. asking if chaka fattah should resign his post. >> the criminal justice process went forward and it's my understanding that a congressman convicted cannot vote and the

district there needs a voting member. >> some constituents say there is a lot of disappointment in this part of the city. >> the way i look at it, you are held to a higher stand in office. you are a lawmaker, lawmakers can't be law breakers. >> hopefully the community can recovery and come together and make this bad incident a positive thing. >> and finally we asked congressman brady what will become of chaka fattah's legacy? >> his legacy is whatever he gets sentenced to, unfortunately. one thing like this here will wipe out everything he did. all the good he did and he did a tremendous amount of good. >> fattah's current term expires on january 2nd, the question once again is if and when fattah will resign. walter perez, channel 6 "action news." we alerted you to fattah's guilty verdict as soon as it

happened through the 6 abc news app, there you will continue to find the latest reaction to the congressman's conviction and please follow the "action news" team for more updates through facebook and through twitter. the future of those 12 girls found inside of a feasterville home last week was taken up at a hearing today at a doylestown, buck counties courtroom. nearly a dozen people from lancaster county attended. many were related to the two of the suspects in the case. it's alleged that the two, the two gifted their 13-year-old daughter to the suspect in the case, lee kaplan, he told police that he fathered two children by the teenager. nine others daughters were found in kaplan's house last week and the outcome of the hearing has not been made public. >> philadelphia police have charged a second suspect for the murder of a woman found

handcuffed, stabbed and shot in fairmount park. the body of toy bryant was found near the mann music center. chantal smith was charged with murder. andiobhan armstrong was charged last week. dangerous rip currents claim the life of a woman off the jersey shore, and ducis rogers has developments on the projected first pick for the sixers in the nba draft. our weather will settle down tonight but i'm tracking another threat of severe weather later this week. >> those stories and more when "action news" continues.

caution flags are up on long beach township beaches, after a new york woman died in a rip current over the weekend. officials say that 24-year-old christie was swimming and knocked down by a wave and pulled into the rip current. lifeguards are urging people to go to beaches where there are lifeguards on duty. if you find yourself in a rip current stay calm and swim die agony will the shore. governor chris christie proposes changes for the way money is distributed to the schools.

by distributing it equally to the school districts. that would be 6,600 for each student. higher income suburban districts get less, christie says that formerly is unfair and a factor in the state's high property taxes. pennsylvania governor tom wolf says he can pit the budget goals without a tax increase, he is backing off of sales and income taxes, he says the negotiations are going well with nine days until the fiscal year deadline, wolf says his priority now say balanced budget with a $250 million increase for public schools and $34 million more for heroin addiction programs. this was graduation day for many seniors across the delaware valley. the university for high school girls received diplomas at the kimmel center, a packed house of family and friends proudly watched on.

"action news" was also there at holy family college in northeast philadelphia seniors from swenson arts and technology high school receives their diplomas. >> and the school for the creative and performing arts graduated today. commencement took place at the merriam theatner center city. they focused their studies on the creative and fine arts. it was a bitter sweet morning outside of mitchell elementary school. students and staff surprised betty graham with balloons and flowers and hugs and thank yous to celebrate her retirement after 30 years in the public school system. the school arranged for betty to be picked up and driven to school in a stretch limousine. she is excited to retire but amid is the tears she will miss making an impact on students lives.

we are two night as way from the nba draft and maybe the end of a new era for your philadelphia 76ers. >> it should start with a guy named ben simmons. the sixers reportedly told him they will take him first in thursday's nba draft and simmons finally worked out with the team and that happened at the team's practice facility. the sixers were trying for weeks to get the lsu forward in, and the team knows that simmons a beast on the court. >> it's one more opportunity to look at a few things from a basketball perspective. study his shooting mechanics and his athleticism and put him through drills and tests that give us a chance to evaluate and compare to others that have been in the gym. >> i think it went well and i feel great and great shape and enjoying the workout and great to be in here surrounded by great people. i look at that and know it's a

so at the top of this broadcast we showed you significant damage today in cape may county, because of the high winds but nothing like this -- this is now live from chopper 6 hd you are looking at what was the public works building in wildwood, at garfield and susquehanna streets. and it came under attack by probably straight line winds late this afternoon. so you might ask where is the roof? it was blown off. where is it?

we'll show you as chop 6 pulls out just a bit. and there is the roof. on the ground about 25 to 30 feet behind the building. >> that is what the wind was doing today in cape may county. >> we had wind gusts up to 80 miles per hour in cape may county, that is hurricane force win and can do damage like that. everything has settled down and stormtracker 6 live double scan showing a few spotty showers and we had a vicious line of storms moving through cape may county, we are live on sky 6 hd and the sunshine is back but the beaches are pretty much empty, a lot of people likely dealing with property damage now thanks to the winds that were helped fueled by the warm, humid air, not officially a heat wave. sunday and yesterday 91 and today only hit 88 degrees, that is 4 degrees above average but

you need three days in the 90s to make it a heat wave but it was warm and humid and you can see the areas that had the rain, cape may down to 66 and millville 70 and philadelphia we are at 80 and allentown and reading in the mid-80s, 86 degrees with a good amount of sunshine. satellite 6 along with action radar showing this squall line really fired up this afternoon. the tornado warning at 3:40, this is pushing to the south and another front is moving through a dew point front bringing down drier air and that could bring a spotty shower or thunderstorm this evening. then it turns more comfortable with lowering humidity and 59 in the suburbs and 68 for center city and tomorrow a bubble of high pressure right over us and that brings us a good amount of sunshine and it's still warm but less humid, allentown 85 and wilmington 87 and cape may 81 and the boardwalk in atlantic

city 82 and the rip current risk is down from moderate to slight tomorrow down the shore. that is good news, now the bad news, future tracker 6 showing tomorrow night tracking this complex of thunderstorms working out of the break and this looks to be moving out of our region late in the morning on thursday and the severe storm prediction puts the southern two-thirds of our viewing area out of the risk of severe weather and any storm could have damaging winds and there still is a chance that some storms could bring damaging hail and even an isolated tornado. thursday we could be under the gun again. so the exclusive accuweather forecast, tomorrow is a nice day, warm and not so humid. 88 degrees and thursday periods of heavy rain and strong possibly severe thunderstorms and 86 and we clear it out for the weekend and friday should be beautiful and 85 and less humid and the temperature gets cranked
