it wasn't a tornado. it just sound like one. this was north wildwood this afternoon as the storm moved through.

and on the boardwalk, the wind took command of anything that wasn't nailed down. it is tuesday night and the the big story on "action news" is the aftermath the first big coastal storm of the summer. and even later tonight, we still saw almost constant lightning strikes off the cape may coast. but it was earlier when 70 and 80-mile-an-hour winds caused this kind of damage. they sheared the roof right off the public works building at susquehanna and garfield in wildwood. in rio grande, a small plane was flipped onto its back, and a helicopter onto its side at the cape may county airport. and a house skeened significant damage in stone harbor just feet from the spot where a tree came toppling down. at this late hour, atlantic city electric reports more than 22,000 customers are still without power at the jersey shore. meteorologist cecily tynan has the latest from accuweather. but first, we're going to north wildwood and "action news" reporter christie ileto.

christie, a tornado warning late this afternoon must have gotten everybody's attention there. >> reporter: that's right, jim. and this area has some of the worst damage. this was a home that was under construction. ed second and third stories of this home were at the mercy of the storm and collapsed onto a neighbor's pool and a block away hotel guests were rattled when the storm actually picked up some of the roof and blew it away. >> it was pretty scary. we heard the wind and then told everybody to get in the bathroom. i felt the building shake. >> reporter: what cheryl felt was the roof of the florentine hotel being ripped from overhead as wild winds pounded the jersey shore north wildwood bore the brunt. >> debris from the top of this hotel started going everywhere, hitting houses, going on the street. >> reporter: in the eye of the storm, "action news" recorded the shear force of the winds that blew away sheds and grassy sound, ripped awnings in stone

harbor and snapped massive trees in north wildwood. >> i heard this big sound. it was kind of like a crash. and all of a sudden, my tree was gone. >> it was crazy. there was trees all over. the furniture was blowing all over the place. >> reporter: still, many residents and businesses are forced to wait in the dark for power to return. including rick's seafood where they're filling orders on a limited menu. >> we're trying our best. we can fry stuff. we had stuff that was already prepped. everything's chilled down and packed in ice. >> reporter: crews are still working to restore power to those customers that are left in the dark. there's no telling how much damage was cause spadoro how much that will cost, especially for this homeowner right here. reporting live in north wildwood, christie ileto, "channel 6 action news." jim? >> thank you, christie. cecily tynan live at the big board. cecily, the jersey shore suffering some tense moments this afternoon. no doubt.

>> that's exactly right, jim. i had a lot of family down the shore vacationing sending me pictures of the entire family huddling in their bathtub waiting for the storms to move on because you really had to seek shelter. this is what the radar looked at 2:00 this afternoon. and we had some severe thunderstorms beginning to move out of maryland and they moved quickly east at about 45 miles per hour. so 3:30, you can see beginning to see even some hooking and some being of that echo, that tornado warning went into effect at 3:40. and then the whole line moving off the coast by 5:00 this evening. and we had a lot of energy with these storms. since 2:00, we've reported about 10,000 lightning strikes, a few of them flaring up across near trenton, lakehurst and barnegat. but the bulk of these were across central delaware and extreme southern new jersey with that line of storms and, as it pushed through, the straight line winds causing tremendous damage. this shows why. we're talking about some wind

gusts more than hurricane force winds. south delaware bay, a buoy reporting an 85-mile-an-hour wind gust. cape may ferry terminal, 81-mile-an-hour gusts. cape may, 80 miles per hour. cape may point, 61. and west cape may, also damaging winds, 48 miles per hour. we've got a break in the action, but i'm tracking our next storm system, and this likely will take aim on thursday. details on that coming up with the full accuweather forecast. jim? >> thank you, cecily. mother nature toppled many trees at the shore this afternoon. but some were brought down by homeowners tonight as part of the effort to clean up. these folks used chainsaws to chop up the fallen timber in cape may county. another one of those storm-ravaged trees landed on top of tom mcgill's pickup truck. it was worse for chrissy along ever green avenue. a tree split her family home. chrissy wasn't home, but her daughter did escape unscathed. fortunately, so did their

neighbor down the road. >> i was watching things fly by the house, and suddenly, the tree came crashing down and my whole house was crushed. >> what part of the house did that go through? >> right through the middle. the kitchen in the front is okay. the bedroom in the back is okay. the whole middle is totaled. >> that woman's name is eileen. she has 13 cats, who seem confused by it all. but glad to have escaped with all nine lives. email to jointheaction@6abc.com. we're on social media with #6abc action. the 30-year political career of chicago, illinois appeared to crash and burn today as a a jury convicted him on all counts in federal court. kog a jury, an illegal $1 million loan for his run for mayor in 2007 caused the dominoes to start falling. falling on a succession of crimes that resulted in guilty verdicts today. live outside the courthouse tonight is "action news" reporter dann cuellar. jim, congressman chaka fattah's conviction now turns his congressional district into a bit of chaos. there are calls for him to resign paving the way for a special election. >> very tough day, but we're going to consult with my lawyers, figure out what our next steps are. >> reporter: and with that, one of longest serving members of congress from our area left the

federal courthouse without answering any other questions. the jury of three men, nine women including three african-americans convicted fattah of taking bribes and stealing campaign contributions and federal grant money. he could face a long time in prison. >> i can't tell you that we will be asking for jail time. there's a complicated guideline formula that needs to be implemented by the probation office and the court before we can determine what is the appropriate sentence in this case. >> reporter: fattah later issued a statement saying he respected the jury's decision and then extolled some of his accomplishments while in public office. congressman bob brady who's known fattah for 35 years called it sad. >> unfortunately, one thing like this year will wipe everything up -- everything else that he did, all the good that he did. and he did a tremendous amount of good. >> i served in the congress longer. >> reporter: fattah has served in congress for 22 years, but he lost his bid for a 12th term just before his trial to state representative in dwight evans. in a statement today, evans says, it's a sad day for our area, the congressman and families that have been involved

in this, and i am committed to move forward. under the law, he will collect his salary but he is no longer allowed to vote. an ethics group in washington is demanding fattah resign. but mayor kenney would not say exclusively that fattah should resign. >> the district needs a voting member. >> do you think he should resign? >> i just said the district needs a voting member. >> reporter: also convicted was fattah friend attorney robert grand age 70 caught up in the money laundering scheme and a herb vieterman, a mayor whom prosecutors called fattah's atm. the jury believe he was funneling money in exchange for the congressman lobbying the white house for an ambassadorship. beaterman's family is bitter. >> this is an unfair system which is an overaggressive government, overaggressive prosecution. they are going after innocent americans, and they are putting them in jail. >> reporter: so far, fattah's legal team has not indicated if it will appeal.

and fattah himself has not said if he would resign, which would pave the way for governor tom wolf to call a special election to fill his seat until a new congressman can take over in january. live at the federal courthouse, dann cuellar, "channel 6 action news." >> thank you, dann. we alerted you to fattah's guilty verdict as soon as it happened today through the 6abc news app. and of course, we'll continue to bring you the latest on the congressman's conviction. and please follow the "action news" team on facebook and twitter for further updates. pennsylvania representatives have just passed some of the most restrictive abortion regulations in the country. the statehouse approved a bill by a vote of 132-65 today that would ban elective abortions after 20 weeks. current law is 24 weeks. supporters say the change reflects medical advances that make fetuses viable outside the womb earlier. the legislation would also criminalize certain abortion procedures that cause the deaths

of fetuses by removing their body parts. democratic governor tom wolf calls the bill unconstitutional. he has vowed to veto it if it is approved by the state senate. a second woman is now charged in the murder of 26-year-old toy bryant of chester. philadelphia homicide detectives arrested 28-year-old shintele smith today accusing her of handcuffing, stabbing and shooting bryant in the back of the head as victim fought for her life. bryant's body was then dumped in fairmount park not far from the mann music center. 39-year-old shavon armstrong of wilkes-barre had already turned herself in on murder charges. detectives say the killing was over an $800 debt. three lehigh valley residents face charges tonight after a stockpile of weapons and ammunition was found inside their vehicle outside the holland tunnel in jersey city. police stopped the van this morning for a cracked windshield. when they asked the driver to step outside, they noticed that

he was sitting on a loaded handgun. officers then searched the van and say they found seven guns, body armor, knives, and 2,000 rounds of ammunition. john cramcy and dean smith of zionsville in lehigh county and kimberly of carbon county were taken into custody and charged with illegal gun possession. they told police they were on their way to rescue a 16-year-old girl from a new york drug den. but tonight, police say they found the girl sm she told them she did not need to be rescued. police rescued a dog that was left inside a hot car tonight in northeast philadelphia. officers were called to the wal-mart parking lot on the 4300 block of buyberry road shortly before 6:00 where they were able to get the dog out of the s.u.v. the dog is okay. animal control officers showed up to take possession of the dog. no charges have been filed. still to come on "action news" tonight, a new war of

failed casinos. we can't let him roll the dice with our children's futures. >> clinton tried to paint trump as little more than a con man who would tank the global economy and bankrupt americans. she challenged his business dealings and atlantic city bankruptcies with a stinging one-liner. >> he's written a lot of books about business. they all seem to end at chapter 11. >> meanwhile, "the washington post" says leaders of trump's own republican party are reportedly alarmed and astonished over what they're calling trump's devastating fundraising efforts so far. reports submitted to the federal elections commission show that trump has only $1.3 million on hand compared to clinton who has $42 million in the bank. and ed rollins, a top strategist for a pro trump superpac was quoted as saying today trump is looking into the abyss.

on capitol hill, a moderate republican senator trying to collect bipartisan support for a compromised gun bill. susan collins of maine is putting forth a bill that would block gun purchases by some suspected terrorists. this comes one day after the senate defeated four more sweeping gun bills along party lines. back in this area, the children's hospital of philadelphia celebrated a milestone tonight. its reachout and reach up program donated it's 1 millionth book. it gives books to children in immediate fat rick -- pediatric care. this first began in 1996. the 1 millionth book's recipient, 3-year-old ashton who just loves to read. and fireworks went off over fairmount park tonight in celebration of the mann center's 40th anniversary leading up to the display in the sky, folks enjoyed music performed by the

philadelphia orchestra. ♪ celebrating a philadelphia landmark tonight. and let's get that accuweather forecast. it was rocking and rolling a bit down at the jersey shore today. >> we have the manmade fireworks in philadelphia and mother nature made at the jersey shore. but stormtracker 6 live double scan showing that we have cleared out the air, but as the thunderstorms were dying, a lot of folks at the jersey shore tweeting me and posting photos like this on my facebook page. this is from mays landing. and these puffy pillow-like clouds are actually called mammatus clouds, and they're very froming, because most clouds are formed by rising air. these are actually formed from sinking air from the thunderstorms dying out. they don't last very long. they're brief. they are rare. but literally i've had hundreds of photos. this was another one sent in by kathy from ocean city, new jersey. and you can check out my fatebook page for more of an --

facebook page for an explanation of these. now that we have the storms out here, it's starting to feel good out here. allentown, 71. reading, 70. philadelphia, 74. cape may, 67. and wilmington, 71 with dropping dew points behind this front. and satellite 6 along with action radar showing even the clouds right now are clearing out nicely. tomorrow should be a pretty comfortable day. it will still be warm with a high of up to 88 degrees. that was our high today. but lower humidity. loads of sunshine. storm-free during the day tomorrow. 8:00, 71. by 2:00, 84. by 5:00, reaching that high of 88 degrees. but, while we're dealing with sunshine tomorrow, there's another system waiting in the wings. so get your beach time tomorrow, because it's going to be pretty nice there. there won't be a sea breeze. lots of sunshine, lower humidity. the jersey beaches, 82. the delaware beaches, 84. the uv index, very high. so put on the sunscreen. and then future tracker showing what's known as an mcs, messa

scale system. mezzo scale coninvestigative system. jim's going to be repeating that. it's a fancy term for a very large complex of thunderstorms. out of the great lakes tomorrow night and latest computer model shows this whole system rolling in late in the morning. the track, the intensity still up in the air, but the severe storm prediction center has put a slight risk of severe weather across most of our viewing area, really all areas south of allentown. that means any storm could have wind, hail and even an isolated tornado. that would be thursday. i'll keep you posted. so theexclusive accuweather seven-day forecast, sunshine tomorrow, 88. thursday, rain with strong, perhaps severe storms possible, 86. friday, though, another beautiful day, 85 degrees. and heading into the weekend, we're warming things up. saturday, 87. sunday, 90. we keep 90 on monday. and then tuesday, partly sunny with a possibility of some thunderstorms, 88 degrees. so all eyes on the mcs on

"action news" was at motivation high school in south philadelphia for commencement exercises in the school's auditorium. parents were filled with joy and pride to see their children graduate. they stepped on stage to accept their diplomas. and students from sayre high school graduated tonight. held at irvine auditorium at the university of pennsylvania. and "action news" was at the seaport museum at penns landing for kensington health science

he's 18. looks 15 and has $6 million in the bank. the phillies formally introduced mickey moniak today. he's the eighth outfielder they -- 18-year-old outfielder they selected first overall earlier this month in the major league baseball draft. he's a southern california kid who needs to get into a philadelphia state of mind. >> didn't know too much about the city other than the fact that their sports fans are some of the greatest in the world. and it's a great organization to play for. lot of history. and i'm just excited to be a philly and to be a part of this organization and hopefully bring a winning tradition to philadelphia. the u.s. and argentina in the coca america semifinals. he gets i had revenge. -- gets his revenge. it doesn't get any better than that.
