a good thursday morning to you all. we begin with an extraordinary push for action on gun control. house democrats are actually staging a sit-in on capitol hill vowing not to budge without a vote. >> it's been a long night. the protest started yesterday morning with civil rights leader john lewis at the helm and dozens of democratic senators joined them in solidarity. lawmakers sent out live imbhajs through facebook and periscope after republicans shut down the cameras. they sang "we shall overcome" and shouted down paul ryan as a publicity stunt and the latest we get from elizabeth hur. >> reporter: determined democrats staging an unprecedented sit-in on capitol hill. >> we'll call in on the leadership of the house to bring commonsense gun control legislation to the house floor. give us a vote.

let us vote. >> reporter: congressman john lewis, the civil rights icon, leading the protest on the house floor starting shortly before noon wednesday. >> the madness must stop. >> reporter: the standoff continued into the early morning. >> there's something wrong with this country when a suspected terrorist can't get on an airplane but can buy as many guns as he wants. >> reporter: pushing to are a vote on gun control days after the senate voted down similar measures despite mounting pressure following the orlando shooting rampage. >> all we're asking is two very minor things, no fly, no buy. no fly, no buy and the background check loopholes. >> reporter: republican leaders at one point order them into recess and turned off the cam a cameras citing a breach of the rules but the protesting lawmakers continued broadcasting using cell phones and social media. >> house should be in order. >> reporter: in a move to try to end the sit-in the speaker announced overnight republicans will start their already scheduled recess earlier denying

democrats any chance for a vote at least for now. elizabeth hur, abc news, new york. other top story the dangerous storms taking aim at the midwest through the mid-atlantic coast. >> more than a dozen tornadoes have been reported across illinois and indiana. one twister that touched down in central illinois in the town of pontiac tore up a gas station and other business, as well. damaged some homes and injured two people. in buckley, blinding rain, you can hear it and wind also created extremely dangerous road conditions making driving nearly impossible. all that rain along with dangerous lightning delayed the copa america final match at soldier field for more that two hours at halftime. tens of thousands were warned to take cover and now that is trudging iceward. abc's justin povick joins us with the forecast. good morning, justin. >> kendis, diane, thanks. good morning to you as well.

we are tracking more potentially dangerous thunderstorms from low pressure, again, we had all the severe weather earlier on yesterday and also last night but continues for today. damaging winds large hail, isolated tornadoes and very heavy rainfall around our nation's capital, points north toward philadelphia. we're also concerned about major heat and humidity in the southeast that could feel over 100 degrees. kendis, diane, back to. >> justin, thank you. meanwhile, cooler more humid weather is allowing fire crews in southern california to make some progress. helicopters and air taskers helping crews on the ground battle the flames covering 7 1/2 square miles. containment improved to 15% and scores of people evacuated are now back home. let's move to presidential politics now and donald trump launching what was a blistering attack on hillary clinton calling her a world class liar. >> trump bashed clinton on everything from her private e-mail use to trade to benghazi. accusing her of spreading death, destruction and terrorism. trump also accused both clinton

and her husband former president bill clinton of using her position as secretary of state to get rich. >> hillary clinton has perfected the politics of personal profit and even theft. she ran the state department like her own personal hedge fund doing favors for oppressive regimes and many others and really many, many others in exchange for cash. >> trump also blasted clinton on the economy and questioned contributions to the clinton foundation. >> well, clinton fired back calling trump's allegations outlandish lies. she told supporters in north carolina that her speech on tuesday must have gotten under his skin and she defended her family's charity. >> the clinton foundation helps poor people around the world get access to life-saving aids medicine, donald trump uses poor people around the world to produce his line of suits and ties. he's going after me personally

because he has no answers on the substance. >> well, clinton added that trump is trying to distract voters she says that he has no real strategy for creating jobs, just a string of empty promises. now to an important vote being held today in the uk. referendum on whether britain should pull out of the european union. >> and what british voters decide today could have far-reaching impact and lama hasan is live in london with more on this. lama, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning to you, kendis. this is a landmark referendum. a hotly contested deeply divisive referendum. politicians have been campaigning up and down the country making the argument to either stay in the european union or lay, what is known as brexit. the reasons for staying led by the prime minister david cameron himself. those who want to stay believe it is better for the british economy and get a big boost for

being a member and selling things to eu countries, economic growth, greater intelligence sharing with european countries and fighting terrorism but those who want to leave the eu so those who want to brexit argue the opposite. they're big believers of being sovereign, oppose immigration and they want it to be controlled. they want britain to take back its cultural and national identity. one of the main principles of eu membership is free movement which means you don't need to get a visa to live in another eu country. those who want to leave disagree and want to take control of the uk borders. those are the main arguments. it is hotly contested. what are the implications for the u.s.? an exit would send shock waves across global markets including the u.s. britain is the top country in the eu for american investments and a survey in march of american companies found 95% favor britain staying in the eu. >> a lot of people will be watching those results when they start streams in early tomorrow morning. lama, thank you. coming up, some details

floods along with lightning strikes that have left thousands without power. that extreme weather means road conditions will likely be a mess this morning from colorado and new mexico to pennsylvania and west virginia, be on the lookout for flash flooding on the roadways. >> flying, that same stormy system will probably result in delays in philadelphia and washington, d.c. and the coast guard made a grim discovery in the search for a father and his three teenage children who vanished on the gulf coast of florida. a body was found last night in that search. >> so the family set out on sunday and abc's steve osunsami reports from st. petersburg, florida. >> it is with a heavy heart they announced at about 4:30 this afternoon, one of our coast guard helicopters located a deceased person in the search area. >> reporter: hope began to fade away when they found a debris field full of belongings, tennis shoeses, water bottles, a

propane task, kayaks and six empty life jackets. about 33 miles off the west coast of florida. 45-year-old ace kimberly, his 17-year-old daughter becca lynn, 15-year-old son donny and his 13-year-old son roger were all living on their 29-foot sailboat. they disappeared sunday after they left from sarasota to ft. myers to get the beat repaired. the mother of the children raced to florida from indiana. we spoke with her family before they got the terrible news. >> she said that she was on her way down there and she will find her kids come hell or high water. >> reporter: the national weather service says it's possible they ran into storms. they were warning boaters about high winds sunday morning. authorities say the father was able to call his brother on sunday saying they were running into rough seas and that's the last anyone heard from the family. steve osunsami, abc news, st. petersburg, florida. a baltimore judge will likely announce his verdict for the officer facing the most serious charges including second degree murder in the death of freddie gray.

caesar goodson drove the police van where gray suffered a final spinal injury and opted for a bench trial instead of a jury and is one of six officers charged in connection with gray's death and the third to stand trial. a louisiana deputy sheriff is dead after being shot in a new orleans suburb. it happened when detective david mitchell stopped to question a man. investigators say the suspect grabbed the deputy's gun, the 19-year-old allegedly shot the officer three times in the back. police gave chase and arrested him in a nearby backyard. rapper troy app pleading not guilty to attempted murder and other charges. investigators say this available video shows him firing a gun during a deadly brawl at a t.i. concert last month. but collins, his real name, was also injured by another shooter. his attorney says the rapper is a victim, not a criminal. the national hockey league is making a big bet on las vegas. the league has added the city to its 30-team roster. this is the first professional team for the city and the first

expansion for the nhl in 16 years. that hockey team could soon have company, though. the oakland raiders may also move to vegas. 1.3 million fans turned out to celebrate the cleveland cavaliers and their nba championship, of course, lebron james and the rest of the cavs toasted with fans during the city's first victory parade. the 1.3-mile parade route, though, took more than four hours to crawl through because of how many fans turned out. >> they waited 52 years for this. they earned this. so it'll be chile and argentina for the copa america soccer title and sunday's championship match. while chile defeated colombia in stormy chicago. >> some of the baseball hi highlights from espn. stan, neil, baseball. >> yeah, dodgers and nationals, the dodgers looking for the sweep of washington at dodger stadium. came down to this. dodgers down 3-. bottom of the ninth. puig, looked like a single.
