"action news" has just learned two people died when a car plunged into the mullica river early this morning. two other people were hurt. took hours for new jersey state police and dive teams to recover the victims. there's no word on what caused the driver to lose control. and this morning we're learning more information about the man under arrest accused of

shooting a delaware county police officer seven times. the officer amazingly is alive in critical condition. the alleged gunman donte island served a decade in federal prison for posing a gun as a felon. he was let out in 2013, his parol officer wanted him to be locked up after he tested positive for marijuana. he could not be found until the violent confrontation with officer christopher dorman. the picture given to "action news" offers hope for christopher dorman, he is seen alert and smiling in his hospital bed. dann cuellar has more on the brush with death. >> reporter: do you have anything to say? 33-year-old donte island had nothing to his as he was taken away fors arraignment.

a front -- frantic officer christopher dorman radioed in he had been shot. >> shot in the face. >> shots fired. >> i'm shot, i'm shot, i'm shot. >> reporter: nearby residents heard the gunshots. >> we heard the shots, pow pow pow pow pow, oh, my god, somebody is shooting. come out here, lord, cop, they just shot a cop. the night before that, it's all this drug activity going on. >> reporter: christopher dorman was shot seven times one in the face, four times in the chest, once in the groin once in the leg. soon a large contingent of swat officers would converge on the apartment complex in the 1500 block of elm wood where the whole thing began. amtrak and septa service was suspended as the manhunt was underway. they caught up with him hiding

out in an apartment. the 40 caliber gun was recovered. residents applauded when he was arrested. >> we are applauding because they got somebody bad off the streets. if he is going to shoot at a cop, he is going to shoot at innocent bystanders and i live right there. >> reporter: for this small community of folcroft officer christopher dorman is the first to be shot by someone in the line of duty. >> we want to ask you to keep this officer in your prayers as well as the family. >> to have an officer injured like this, never, you know it's a wake-up call for the small towns. >> reporter: turns out 25-year-old christopher dorman was not supposed to be working and filling in for someone's and days away from learning if he was going to be hired as a septa police officer. dann cuellar channel 6 "action news." >> stay with us. in the next half-hour we'll look at christopher dorman's public service and more on what helped to arrive save his life.

i'll details coming up on all that. >> 9:30, "action news" just got new information on the garden state parkway tragedy overnight in port republic, atlantic county. state police have released the names. people who were in the nissan that went off the road into a marsh. 27-year-old darrell thomas of brooklyn was driving and dacary pierce was killed. police are investigating after a teenager was shot in the back. the teenager ran to the 1900 block of rowan street in the nicetown section before 1:00 a.m. saying he was shot. police rushed him to the hospital. he feels last listed in critical condition. this morning there is no word about a motive. a man who served federal

prison time for gun possession as a felon is in jail accused of shooting folcroft police officer christopher dorman. donte island was wanted for drugs possession while on parol. s.w.a.t teams surrounded him not far from where he ambushed the police officer who was investigating drug activity when he was shot. island shot at another officer in another police vehicle and missed. the window was shot out and the bullet lodged in the headrest of the passenger side side. >> i'm shot in the face, i'm shot in the face. >> shots fired, shots fired. >> i'm shot, i'm shot, i'm shot. >> i heard shots, pow pow pow pow pow, oh, my god somebody is

shooting. >> we're getting a first look of officer christopher dorman in the hospital, awake and smiling. of course, many people are praying for a speedy recovery for officer dorman. last night his brothers in blue took part in a vigil outside the collingdale police department. jeff chirico was right there. >> our father who art in heaven. >> reporter: clergy citizens and police held hands in prayer outside the collingdale police department, the impromptu vigil a show of support for christopher dorman who is fighting for his life after taking multiple bullets in the line of duty. >> he is one of the men and women who stands up everyday to risk to lives to be a peacemaker among us. >> reporter: police say he was attacked responding to a call near an participant complex. he feels alert and talking as a fell cop rushed him to nearby fitzgerald mercy hospital. he was flown to penn presbyterian medical center with

wounds to say face groin and leg. police officers say the bullet proof vest saved his life. >> the doctor said any one of the rounds on his vest could be fatal. he was shot in the front and back. the 25-year-old joined the folcroft fire department when he was 16 and dreamed of becoming a cop. district attorney jack whalen knows him personally. >> i know his mother and father, his father was a former councilman in folcroft borough. it's a shame the officer and his family have to go through this. >> he is a good guy, nothing bothers, great sense of humor, something like this has to happen. i'm hoping for full recovery and we get i am back. >> reporter: christopher dorman underweren't two surgeries including -- underwent two

surgeries including one to address the gunshot to his face. his friends say he was laughing and talking and saying he wanted to make it to his next shift. jeff chirico channel 6 "action news." >> the mother of a 4-year-old girl who accidentally shot herself inside a north philadelphia home is facing serious charges. this is video of the scene thursday. she is charged with third degree murder. they say an arrest warrant out for her boyfriend demetrius williams facing involuntary manslaughter charges. the little girl found the loaded gun in the closet and shot herself in the eye. it was a sea of pink and white balloons on the street where the 4-year-old died. a memorial filled with stuffed animals and pictures of the child is growing outside the home. organizers of the vigil called for parents to lock up their guns and keep the amunition in a separate lock box.

recusers and rescues are going on right now as you see here in flood-ravages west virginia. hundreds are homeless and thousands without power. officials are calling it the worst flooding for the region in a century. abc eva pilgrim with the story. >> reporter: this morning, the desperate search for the missing continues for the second day now. the rushing rapids destroyed a west virginia community. >> devastating. >> reporter: the flooding wiping out small towns, neighbors helping neighbors, the water in this neighborhood peaked about mid window, this morning still not down enough. >> where are you staying tonight? >> staying in the truck until i can get back to the house. >> reporter: the governor called it the worst flooding in industry. 23 dead among them an 8-year-old boy and toddler swept away by the rushing water. >> it's been a long 24 hours and the next 24 hours may not be
