making news in america this morning -- terror attack. suicide bombers in turkey targeting one of the busiest airports in the world with gunfire and a series of deadly explosions. >> bombs went off and people were running the other way. >> witnesses describing their harrowing escape. the attacker detonating a bomb and the first look of the damage this morning as an investigation gets under way. airports on alert. flights in turkey land overnight, hear passengers reacting after landing. extreme weather. a hail-covered course field in denver. the summer storms pounding much of the country.

a good wednesday morning. we begin with breaking details from that terror attack in turkey. a scene of gunfire and carnage. >> the latest video that's coming in from istanbul. you see it there, airport security video posted online and you saw the blast and then people running for their lives, at least three dozen people were killed in the attack and nearly 150 others injured. >> the airport is opened this morning with an invest well under way. keep in mind, turkey is a key u.s. ally against isis and a fellow member of nato. >> live team coverage this morning. lana zak has details on security here in the u.s. at airports but we'll get started with molly hunter who covers the region for us. >> reporter: good morning. the investigation is going full speed ahead this morning and at this point, it appears that extra layers of security

prevented much more damage. as the sun comes up in istanbul the morning after the carnage, after gunfire and explosions rocked the city's main airport tuesday night. new video showing a fireball as one of the attackers detonates inside the terminal. here, people looking for coverage, some holding children. ambulances and vans and taxis. an american tourist witnessed the attack. >> people were shooting on one side. we all ran the other way. then the bombs went off and people started running the other way and there was more shooting. we came out and after that, i think there was another bomb. >> reporter: the violence erupting during a busy travel time for one of the world's bigiest travel hubs. three attackers arrived and opened fire with machine guns and then detonated suicide belts. >> a lot of people attacking.

i didn't see. i heard one bomb -- i think the arrivals area. i think two, the departure area. >> reporter: this morning, stories of survival. this journalist and his wife finding cover after breaking the door of a hair salon. >> i put her in a storage room where we waited with the bullets literally -- hearing the bullets close to our door. i thought, this is it. any minute he's going to walk in to shoot us. we were sitting ducks with no choices. >> reporter: now, turkey is a nato ally, a nato member, a key u.s. ally in the region dealing with both internal and external sutter threats and everyone will be watching this investigation. >> molly, lot of people focused on isis as a possibility, has anyone actually claimed responsibility for the attack, though? >> reporter: no one has claimed yet, diane that's exactly right

the prime minister last night said at this point all signs point to isis. turkey deals with both internal threats from kurdish separate, the pkk but also external from isis and if isis is responsible they have hit the place that thousands of foreign fighters transited through to get to syria. >> molly, thank you. back here in the u.s., there was an immediate reaction to the attacks in istanbul. airports taking no chances with security. >> if you're going to the airport this morning, expect to see authorities out in full force. abc's lana zak joins us with that part of the story. >> reporter: immediately after the attack, the u.s. ordered a stoppage between all flights between u.s. and turkey. that stoppage has been lifted. ten flights in the air flying from turkey to the united states when the attack occurred. all of them landed safely on american soil without incident.

many of airports across u.s. increased security. >> we have clearly entered a period of new normal just as we have to be concerned about soft targets we have to be concerned about the softer areas of the airport. >> reporter: after the attack, officials with tactical weapons were deployed. president obama was briefed on the attack by homeland security and officials within the justice department and the fbi are offering their assistance in turkey's investigation. united states has updated its travel warnings to any americans hoping to go to turkey, about 180,000 americans travel there usually every year. >> lana, lot of people will be on guard throughout the holiday weekend. with a record 3 million americans traveling. lana mentioned ten flights were on their way from turkey to the u.s. when the attack happened and one of them was on

its way to boston logan airport. >> some emotional reunions in the airport. look at this, the passengers said they were stunned by the news of attack e specially they just left the same location where it just took place. >> terrible. you feel that it -- sometime it's getting very close to you and you feel -- >> it's just an unbelievable feeling. just getting them back again. like i was reborn. >> those emotional scenes being repeated at the airport. should point out the presidential candidates are weighing in on the terror attack in turkey. donald trump started out by sending prayers to the victims' prayers. >> at a rally at ohio, he reiterated his call of water boarding in the battle against isis saying you have to fight fire with fire. >> there's something going on that's really, really bad, all

right, it's bad. and we better get smart and we better get tough or we're not going to have much of a country left. >> hillary clinton also expressed condolences as she said the attack is a reminder that the united states cannot retreat. she also added in a statement, quote, terrorists have struck again in the heart of one our nato allies and all americans stand united with the people of turkey against this campaign of hatred and violence. one final image from turkey. this is crowd of people outside a hospital. those people are waiting to donate blood. and do stay with abc news for the latest on the terror attack in turkey. we'll have more on this in half-hour and live team coverage later on "good morning america." still ahead -- no one won the megamillions overnight. plus, tracking severe weather, hail and rain flooding a major league team's dugout.

well the blue jays rockies game at coors field had to be delayed because of this mess, up 6 inches of water poured into the clubhouse and rain rolled down into the stadium stairs. the grounds crew used shovels and brooms to clear hail from the diamond. the game wrapped a short time later. storms overnight stretching from the deep south to the canadian border. >> the long-awaited house republican report from benghazi

found no new wrongdoing by hillary clinton or anyone else. but the report blasted the obama administration for failure in intelligence, coordination and security. it was critical of the military response to the attack. clinton was quick to point out there was nothing to contradict earlier investigation and i'll leave it to others to characterize this report. i think it's pretty clear it's time to move on. >> congressional democrats dismissed the report as a gop conspiracy theory. also as a result of the turmoil in the middle east, that part of the world, there's no end in sight to europe's refugee crisis. the group doctors without borders have posted new video of people being rescued, thousands in one day. just off the coast of libya. the thirdide by side.

check out this incredible scene from the dallas area as severe weather moved through gusty winds brought down that billboard right on top of that car and narrowly missing that silver one. fortunately no severe weather is expected in north texas today. >> that's a relief. looking at morning road conditions, storms could pose a threat in the southwest. showers along the gulf coast and in new england. and if you're flying, airport delays are possible in new orleans, houston and boston. an updating this morning's major breaking news, the damage done by three suicide bombers at the airport in istanbul, turkey. >> the attack at the airport's international arrivals terminal killed at least 36 people. turkey's prime minister said isis is likely to blame.

>> steve gomez with the fbi says the attack demonstrates a weakness that needs to be corrected. 12k3w4r it's a good warning, it's a good heads-up for them, knowing that there's a potential vulnerability in istanbul. the problem that i have with this attack, it happened before the screening area in the airport and usually once you get up to that screening area, you know, nobody's checking you out unless, you know, some law enforcement personnel see somebody acting suspicious. it's very vulnerable. the security officials have to look at that now, what do they have to do as people are coming into the airport, because there are a lot of people there, lot of taxis, cars and so on. that's what the terrorists are looking for. >> our thanks to steve gomez. the scene from the istanbul airport this morning, us gage

gunman walked into a downtown office building and shot a woman and then turned the gun on himself. that gunfire sent office workers running from the building. . the gunman died. the victim this morning in critical condition. they say this was a targeted attack, not a random shooting. >> three crew members are missing this morning after a fiery head-on train collision in the texas panhandle. the two freight trains were on the same track. one crew member jumped and survived. but the fire is still burning making it difficult to search for others still missing. the dee bree is spread across an area of four football fields. unclear how the fast the trains were traveling. speed limit for trains in that area is 70 miles an hour. no word on why the trains were on the same track. also in texas, by land or by air, houston police officers were going to get their man. they used a helicopter and an suv to chase a burglary suspect

into a nearby field. crews here, they side swept the man. he gets up, runs and thinks he gets away from it. they got their man. >> not so fast. efforts to free that entangled blue whale off the coast of california seems to have failed. rescuers so far lost track of the giant mammal. the whale was first spotted monday off orange county, tangleded in fishing lines. there are fears that the animal will die from stress and exhaustion. new this morning, the mega millions jackpot has groan to at least $415 million after no winning ticket was drawn last night. that will be the third largest pot in megahistory. >> the cash payout will be about $286 million. the next drawing is friday night, two tickets by the way

you imagine that? >> these passengers had flown from istanbul to houston this time. their story from chauncey glo glover. >> we were glad to be home. >> glad to be home. >> reporter: a collective feeling of relief for passengers on the turkish airport flight from istanbul. >> we saw it on live tv on the plane. >> reporter: houston fighterer bobby gaudio explained how shock waves went throughout the airplane. as passengers watched the news of what happened, in the airport they had just left. >> we were seven hours into the flight. you could tell the tension was thick. >> reporter: the captain didn't make announcement and the flight attendants were glued to the tv, too, learning the tragic news along with passengers. many passengers telling me when they left ig istanbul security was x tra tight. >> security there was top-notch inside the airport.
