and the summer threat you can't see. playgrounds so hot, it takes just seconds for this to happen to the littlest hands. the warning for parents tonight. good evening. i'm cecilia vega. thank you for joining us on this busy sunday. there's breaking news as we come on the air. a explosion here in new york city. 24 hours before america's largest fourth of july celebration kicks off. police say an explosive device that appears to be homemade rocked part of central park today. an unassuming tourist losing part of his leg after landing right on the device. authorities quick to say, it's not an act of terror. the blast sending fears soaring. not just here in new york, heightened security across the country. in the nation's capital, police canning visitors. searching bags. in chicago, an extra 5,000

officers on duty. guarding against possible terrorism and gun violence. the investigation into what happened today in new york, still under way. marci gonzalez leads us off with the latest. >> reporter: tonight, the serious scare in america's largest city. >> i have no idea what it was. it sounded like a cannon. >> reporter: an explosion in central park. at 10:52 this morning, an 18-year-old virginia tourist, jumping off a rock, landing on an explosive device. partially severing his foot. >> we don't know what happened. there was a small explosion. then dust. >> beyond the caliber of fireworks, just based on what we heard. >> reporter: the blast prompting a major police response. the uncertainty over what happened prompting a major police response. the bomb squad and homeland security officers here on the scene.

>> it could have been an sprerment. we do not have any evidence of a constructed device. we believe this could have been put here as some kind of experiment. >> reporter: police saying that the tourists are not believed to being involved with constructing the device. >> at this time, we have no evidence that this is related to terrorism. >> reporter: the security scare highlights the heightened alert. people and police are on this holiday weekend. officers across the country on patrol to prevent a potential attack. >> they're looking for components for a dirty bomb. >> reporter: from the water to the air, 525 specially-trained nypd counterterror agents. using radiation detectors, monitoring license plates, video feeds, and people. and after the deadly terror attack in istanbul, seven major airports in the u.s. increasing security. uniformed and undercover

officers also closely watching train stations and bus terminals. this weekend in chicago, thousands of extra police on-duty. in washington, d.c., officers will be checking bags ahead of tomorrow night's fireworks show. and back to central park tonight, police are looking for more evidence using bomb-sniffing dogs. the 18-year-old tourist is hospitalized, listed in serious but stable condition. >> marci, thank you. and no holiday break for hillary clinton. after being questioned by the fbi, we are now learning more about that interview. clinton saying it was both businesslike and civil. mary bruce is on the campaign trail for us once again. >> reporter: tonight, hillary clinton is hoping to put the e-mail scandal behind her. >> i've been eager to do it. i was pleased to have the opportunity to assist the department in bringing its review to a conclusion. >> reporter: clinton says that the three and a half-hour

interview was civil and businesslike. but donald trump today again seizing on the controversy that has plagued her campaign for months, tweeting, "only a fool would believe that the meeting between bill clinton and the u.s.a.g. was not arranged." referring to that private meeting monday on the tarmac between her husband and the attorney general. clinton now weighing in. >> i think hindsight is 20/20. both the attorney general and my husband have said that they wouldn't do it again. >> reporter: the fbi is now close to completing its investigation into whether clinton mishandled classified information on her private e-mail server when she was secretary of state, and if charges should be filed. all this as the candidates look to pick a running mate. the democratic contenders were coy today. >> she's got a great core of people to choose from. and we'll see. >> if you have a question like that, please direct it to the clinton campaign. >> i'm not going to speculate. >> reporter: meanwhile, trump spent the weekend at his new jersey golf course getting to know indiana governor mike pence.

also on his list, former speaker of the house newt gingrich, who's getting advice from an unusual source, the current vice president. should -- shouting to gingrich. >> newt, are you going to do it? >> i think he needs the help, yes. >> reporter: both candidates have a big week ahead. trump plans to announce on wednesday the long-awaited list of speakers for the gop convention. and clinton will be hitting the trail with the vice president and president obama. >> mary, thank you. we want to move on to florida, and what should be a very busy beach weekend. instead, a toxic algae is making the water not only unswimmable there, it smells so bad, people don't want to go anywhere near it. how long will this last? eva pilgrim, out on the water for us tonight. >> reporter: empty waterways and beaches. tonight, toxic algae is keeping people out of popular south florida hotspots. >> this is our downtown, where everybody brings their boats

down. >> reporter: and this weekend? >> it would have been huge. >> reporter: abc news went on a boat tour of the algae in one of the hardest-hit areas, stuart. >> we would be sailing four days, three trips a day with 25 to 30 passengers per trip and now i'm totally grounded. >> reporter: we found some local residents wearing masks. the smell, putrid. >> this is blue-green algae, it releases toxins as it dies and you're obviously smelling it right now. >> reporter: the governor's state of emergency tonight in effect in four counties along the treasure coast. at least one beach closed. new signs now up warning boaters of the algae. >> when people ask me i tell them this way, "i am not going to go swimming in the water." >> reporter: authorities are investigating to see if the toxic water is to blame for some reported infections. this problem starting after polluted water was dumped out of lake okeechobee to prevent flooding. the discharges now slowed, as residents call for a clean-up. >> i don't think you can put a price tag on it.

because the price tag is way greater than monetary if we don't. >> reporter: the algae, much worse this afternoon than it was this morning. this thick, green, stinky sludge is the reason fireworks are being moved inland instead of on the water tomorrow night. >> eva, thank you. overseas tonight, another attack being blamed on isis. the third mass terror attack being carried out by the terror group in the last week. this, the deadliest in baghdad in more than a decade. more than 160 killed. 20 hostages killed in bangladesh, 44 killed in istanbul, more than 230 victims in all. jennifer eccleston on isis using the end of ramadan to call for new attacks. >> reporter: a massive explosion in the heart of baghdad. chaos in the crowds.

one witness saying it was like an earthquake. families had gathered to celebrate ramadan. at daybreak, a dark picture emerges. cranes pick out the bodies. many of the victims, women and children. at least 167 dead, nearly 200 injured. isis claiming responsibility for the carnage. iraq's prime minister facing angry crowds at the site of the bombing. people hoped for calm. instead, isis wreaking havoc. >> they're looking to kill as many people as possible, and they're prepared to die for their cause. >> reporter: a lesson they know all too well. nearly 3,000 miles away in bangladesh, they're mourning the massacre of 20 civilians, mostly foreigners. including 19-year-old american, abinta kabir. her former teacher stunned. >> i don't understand why the world has to be that way.

why do innocents have to pay for the hatred of others? >> reporter: the five terrorists killed by commandos, all followers of isis. one of the students who was killed during the siege, faraz hossain, was reportedly given the chance to leave by the militants. instead, he chose to stay with his friends abinta kabir and tarishi jain. they were all killed. cecilia? >> jennifer, thank you. we do want to move on to the severe storms moving in, heavy rain and hail coming down in parts of kansas. wildfires burning in the west. a dozen right now in california alone. in san bernardino, this blaze tearing threw a neighborhood. here's rob marciano. >> reporter: tonight, 17 wildfires roaring in the west across 9 states. in san bernardino, california, four homes rapidly destroyed.

a brush fire engulfing the hillside. >> it was like a tornado coming with all the heat and the wind and i just ran up the hill. >> reporter: up the coast in fresno, the curry mountain fire burning nearly 3,000 acres, forcing residents out of their homes. >> it's a real tragedy. it's going to be really hard to let go. >> reporter: and storms pounding the plains overnight. parts of kansas soaked by six inches of rain and winds gusting up to 75 miles per hour. two adults and a child rescued from this car stuck in a flash flood. this fireworks tend in wichita, collapsing. >> first it started sprinkling rain. all of the sudden the tent started lifting up. >> we were holding poles down for dear life. >> reporter: the wind flinging debris down streets nearly hitting this truck. >> rob joins us now, with the latest. and the holiday forecast. including some severe weather happening right now? >> reporter: the central part of the country, a tornado watch posted for the heartland.

including paducah and evansville. severe thunderstorm watch out fas well. and all part of the same system that brought the rains and flooding to kansas. will roll up the east overnight. stretching into washington, d.c. by tomorrow afternoon. our nation's capital likely to see rain. and the rain getting a little farther north, towards philadelphia by nightfall. the western half of the country, looks to be dry and warm. so be careful if you're celebrating with fireworks there. looks to be dry in boston. here in new york city, the rain at least should hold off at least for the start. >> we'll take it, rob. in new york today, the funeral held for holocaust survivor and nobel laureate, elie weisel. he died at at the age of 87. his life dedicated to fighting for human rights.
